Most of us know the drill—the climate, the soil… it’s read and said so often as our grape community booms that I almost say it with no gratitude. But, as I look out through my back door to see flourishing vines, tomato plants reaching high, and peppers just asking to be plucked- I am thankful. I do pride myself on having a green thumb, but, that green thumb can only do so much, and is put to the test when I visit my parents in Arizona. People have gardens there! Can you imagine? Do they water every multiple times a day? How long did it take to build their beds and prepare the dry, desert soil? I simply torn up some weeds, made small holes with a shovel, and literally just plopped some seeds in the dirt. Two weeks later my plants popped their head, and it was as easy as that. It’s the ease and access that is the true game changer. Sure, people want to live a healthy lifestyle, they want to support their community, but do they have to drive 20 miles to do so? Can they only pursue this lifestyle in the summer months? Is it easier for certain people? It sure is, and I’m glad I live in an area that reaps such benefits. With local, healthy living at my fingertips it’s hard to say no. But if I had to make a true effort, if it inconvenienced me, would I feel the same? Who knows, but luckily I won’t need to put my dedication to the test. Thank you San Joaquin.

HEADWATERS KAYAK SHOP OWNER NURTURES COMMUNITY GROWTH  BY LINDSEY RODRIAN

Daniel Arbuckle began his love affair with local waters at just seven years old. His family operated a camp

for the Boy Scouts of San Joaquin, and although he was too young to participate in the program, he enjoyed his time there, “with my own little kayak, just cruising around.” His love for kayaking continued as he entered adulthood, working at many kayak and adventure shops throughout the Central Valley. “I came in to do their kayak program, the Wednesday night social paddle, and the Lodi paddle club,” he explains. Eventually both businesses closed, but Dan knew Lodi was still an excellent spot for a kayaking business.

With strong roots in the kayaking world, many companies and vendors supported Dan’s dream of opening his own shop. “I had no money,” he admits. “So I took out a $10,000 loan, and vendors supplied all the kayaks we needed.” That 10 grand went toward building the Headwaters Kayak Shop van, and the purchase of basic supplies. Headwaters Kayak Shop opened their Cluff Avenue location in 2010. Here, they offer everything residents need to get out on the water. From quality kayak and

paddle board merchandise (for purchase or rental) and expert instruction, to weekly Wednesday Evening Social Paddles, Full Moon Paddles, and weekend getaways, the shop truly honors Dan’s mission—to get people outside, exploring their natural environment and seeing all the Monkelumne River and the Delta have to offer. “Growing up on the river and spending time outside has brought me so much peace and understanding, and I want to share that with people on a daily basis.” In 2014, Headwaters Kayak Shop began running Lodi Lake’s boathouse, where they offer rentals, tours, and lessons. Today, the business is truly a family affair. “My kids and wife Ashlie work with me at the shop,” Dan explains. “Chances are on any day you’ll see at least two of the four of us at the boathouse… or on the water.” Dan’s daughter, Mackenzie, first joined her dad on his kayak at only three months old. Now, as a two-year-old, she continues to enjoy sharing his passion. And the same goes for Dan’s parents, who retired and opened their own Headwaters Kayak Shop in Redding. “It changes people, it’s a snowball effect,” Dan says of his love for the sport. “One person comes out for a paddle with us, and next week they bring three of their friends.” In further support of a healthier, happier San Joaquin—

Dan, the Headwaters team, and the City of Lodi—founded the Kayak Festival. This April they celebrated their second year, with a two-day festival offering live music, food trucks, vendors, demonstrations, clinics, river tours, kayak and fishing tournaments, and deals on equipment. “We just love getting the community together to kick off spring, dust off the kayaks, and hit the water.” With the current paddleboard craze, Headwaters Kayak has expanded to fulfill this fairly new need, coming from surf-inspired, Southern California trends. Last summer’s spike in demand led Headwaters to invest in 40 paddleboards, a six-person board for family fun, and even paddleboard yoga classes offered every Friday and Saturday! “Paddleboarding offers a really awesome, unique perspective on your surroundings,”

Dan says. “And it’s a great workout for your core. I’ve heard you burn just as many calories as hiking and biking.” If you have yet to experience the Central Valley via water—we suggest you do so! TO STOCKMARKET MEET THE FACES BEHIND STOCKTON’S CURATED MARKETPLACE

When Amy Sieffert, 33, was running an online boutique, she noticed a void in local events where she could showcase her inventory. There was plenty of op-

portunity to market her items online and in bigger cities like Sacramento and San Francisco, but she struggled to reach potential customers in her own backyard. Along with founder Katie Macrae (who has since retired from the business) she dreamed up the Stockmarket, a curated marketplace featuring art, wares, clothing and more sold by makers, artists, and businesspeople from the Central Valley and beyond. Today Amy and her business partner Anne Wilcox, 33, (who started as a vendor at the event) host monthly “stockmarkets” in the city where they both grew up (and attended high school). “I was kind of in the same boat as Amy,” the former owner of Yard Sale Swap Shop in Chico shares. “It’s hard because I’m from Stockton and there wasn’t anything in Stockton,” Anne says. “It’s hard to open a brick and mortar.” Since inception, the Stockmarket has been a success. The first test market (held in December 2014) drew more than 500 peo-

ple. Since then it has continued to grow, and the Stockmarket celebrated its one-year anniversary as a dependable, once-a-month, all-day affair in May. While the family and pet-friendly experience has undoubtedly become a vehicle for small, local businesses to engage with customers and display their talents in a lively atmosphere, the purpose is two-fold. Amy and Anne agree they hope to help change the perception of Stockton with their venture by calling on good talent from bigger cit-

ies to join in. However, Amy assures, “We do want to focus on very local—Stockton, Modesto, Lodi.” While plans are to continue business as usual (with monthly pop-ups on Weber Avenue), Amy and Anne say they are making an effort to increase the Stockmarket’s focus on art, which includes a partnership with 1850 Collective—a new, underground art group in Stockton. If you haven’t visited yet, here’s your chance. The next date is scheduled for June 18. In addition to browsing clothing, furniture, custom leather goods, jewelry, body products, original art, home and garden décor, and vintage items, San Joaquin artisan caterers and food trucks provide food and drink for the day while local bands play to the crowds. “We’re really trying to get a little bit of everything,” Anne says. “It’s a lot of fun.” JOIN IN THE FUN: STOCKMARKET 630 E. TRACY ER DOCTOR STARTS COMMUNITY SPORTS LEAGUE  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

In 2004, Andy Su moved to Mountain House, a “bedroom community” at the edge of San Joaquin

County. As a full-time emergency physician at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital and board member for the Tracy Hospital Foundation, the father of three keeps busy. But despite his packed schedule, his involvement in the burgeoning community he calls home has always been a priority. Andy’s biggest community contribution to date came in the form of a youth sports league. After a local little league launched in 2008, Andy was approached to begin a flag football league. “I was reluctant at first knowing how much time it would take,” he says. Regardless of concerns, in March 2009, Mountain House Flag Football, Inc. was formed and in June of that year it received 501(c)3 status. In addition to successfully creating activities for local youth, the nonprofit aims to keep activities affordable so more kids can participate. Prices have never been raised. Andy attributes this low-cost approach (and a continued effort to improve overall experience) for some of the rapid growth the league has experienced. “We have been able to grow the youth flag football league from 80 kids in 2009 to 400 last year,” he says. Still, it wasn’t enough. The lack of organized activities for kids and adults in Mountain House was becoming a notable dilemma. “[We] quickly realized 36

there was need for so much more in Mountain House so we changed our mission,” he says. Today, Mountain House Flag Football, Inc. offers adult basketball, adult and youth flag football, youth cheer, a tennis club for kids and adults, and a golf club. The organization also took over the fun run put on by the Mountain House Community Services District Board (on which Andy has served since 2008) and the MH Halloween Parade. “One of the ways we keep our fees low… is that we are constantly raising funds and soliciting sponsors,” says Andy. The fun run mentioned above and another community event—A Royal Affair (where young girls experience a day of princess-fueled activities)—funnel money into youth flag football and cheer, while also creating more opportunities for local outings. Humbly, Andy won’t take all the credit. “While I volunteer hundreds of hours a year running this nonprofit, our organization could not have been as successful without the hundreds of volunteers who donate thousands of hours of their time,” he says.

Few would pass up the opportunity for a delicious dinner out. After all, when a new dining adventure lies behind every restaurant’s door, who wouldn’t want the chance to find their next favorite meal?

But for some of us, leaving the house for a wholesome entrée isn’t so appealing. There are so many options available across a menu, but so few for those with dietary restrictions. Sure, that plate of cheese fries sounds tantalizing, but is it really worth the extra calories? Fortunately for you, my fellow foodies, we’ve got the life hacks to put the fun back in mealtime. Looking to lower your sodium? Ask which dishes are prepared with fresh vegetables. Ingredients that haven’t been preserved 38

will normally carry much less salt. If your entrée comes with a sauce or gravy find out if it's crafted in-house and request it to be made with less salt. If it isn’t prepared in house, request that it be served on the side so that you get to choose how much you use. If you’re trying to keep the calorie count as low as possible you need to steer clear of the dessert menu, pastas, and many of your favorite beverages. Why the drinks, you ask? When we’re in the thick of conversation or enjoying our meal we sometimes drink up a lot of our daily allotment. For example, that 24-oz can of soda? Try 140 calories on for size. And when we’re socializing, we normally don’t just stop at one. Tired of treating your stomach like a grease trap? Then get rid of that breading and go for something that’s been grilled. This works really well for chicken and fish topping your salad or nestled between two buns. Not looking forward to giving up on your deep-fried favorites?

Wean yourself off these fatty feasts by giving baked versions a shot. Watch the fat content drop when you try out fries and onion rings, crab and other tasty treats fresh from the oven. When all else fails, turn to portion control. You really can have too much of a good thing. Try ordering an entrée and splitting it with your dinner date. Sharing is not only caring, but also it maximizes the tasting experience with half the calories and none of that bloated waddling you do out to the car after your meal. If you’re eating alone or want to try a little bit of everything go for a single sampler and skip out on dessert.

AN AG-TRAVAGANZA AT THE SAN JOAQUIN FAIRGROUNDS

When it comes to farming festivities, no one does it better than the San Joaquin AgFest. Hosted at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds in Stockton, this week-long event

sprawls from June 13th throughout the 18th to showcase talented 4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of America) students from the local region as they compete with their prized animals. This celebration has grown since its humble beginnings as part of the San Joaquin County Fair. When the fair bid San Joaquin farewell, individuals in the community came together to create the San Joaquin County Junior Show & Auction Council. As Chris Schallberger, Volunteer of AgFest and Co-Community Leader of Tokay Colony 4-H explains, “We went out and we formed different committees, and talked to different community members and businesses.” With their newfound support, backed by the ever-present assistance of the Ag community, AgFest blossomed in 2014 into the exceptional event it’s known as today. In these last years, AgFest has grown to provide local restaurants and wineries with opportunity to showcase their own culinary zeal through the Farm to Fork Food and Wine Fundraiser. This Thursday evening event is filled with gourmet dishes made from locally harvested ingredients paired with rich region-grown wines. Sponsors not only get to enjoy a little countryside charm, but sample some of the foods that make their Central Valley so appealing!

However, the primary reason for AgFest has always been geared toward the students who bring their agricultural projects out and into the public eye. Students who have brought in livestock, raised for a certain period of time as dictated by AgFest regulations, display their prized critters according to weight class. “They have to have a commitment to these animals,” Chris elaborates. “Before they show them, they spend a lot of time with the animals. They research how to best care for them, and then put that knowledge to work. It's an excellent, hands-on experience.” Once it's show time, animals are judged according to their market quality. “A Market grade scorecard for each specie based on state judging standards is used to evaluate and place the animals. If they’re deemed market ready they’re put through an auction sale on Saturday.” The fest also welcomes students working in other fields of the agricultural industry, showcasing projects such as welded trailers, horticulture exhibits, and more. The experience prepares students for their career goals ahead, teaching life lessons they can take with them in any line of work, be it agriculture or beyond.

Just because you’ve seen Downtown San Francisco before doesn’t mean it’s lost all appeal. There are plenty of reasons tourists clamor to this Northern California escape. Sure, bakeries scattered throughout Northern California offer this treat, but there’s a reason grabbing a loaf of sourdough bread (or at least a sandwich made with the San Francisco staple) is better in the city. The sour taste likened to this bread is actually derived from the wild yeast used to make it. But not all wild yeast is identical. The bacteria in San Francisco interact with the bread to create a distinct taste.

DAY 1:

From San Joaquin County, the drive should take roughly two hours or less, depending on your starting location. Before checkin stop off at the Boudin Bakery (251 Geary St.) for a light lunch. The croissant sandwich piled with crisp produce and fresh avocado is a can’t miss—or warm up in the chilly San Francisco summer with a bowl of Boudin soup (in a bread bowl, of course). Don’t forget to stock up on loaves of San Francisco’s signature bread while you’re there. Several tasty varieties are sold in the shop. Once you’ve fueled up for the weekend ahead, take a drive through the city. Leisurely driving is not often associated with the traffic-packed streets of San Francisco, but don’t worry, you have a specific destination in mind. As a local-adjacent, you’ve surely seen the Golden Gate Bridge in all its glory, but have you identified the best lookout spot? Ironically, it’s not in the city at all. Head north (over the bridge) to Marin County. surrounding bay from invaders during World War II. Here you’ll get the shot reminiscent of postcards sold in Fisherman Wharf gift shops. For the best view, continue on the steep and winding road to Hawk Hill (Conzelman Rd.). Whip out your smart phone (or the best camera you’ve got!) and snap a panoramic of the golden gate bridge with the sparkling city as its backdrop. Once you’ve soaked it all in, head back. One more worthy trip over the Golden Gate Bridge and (finally) to your weekend headquarters for check in. Stop in the lobby coffee shop for a signature Starbucks beverage before heading up to your room to settle in. Unpack, unwind, and get ready for the evening. Start early so you’ll have time to do it all. Saunter downstairs to the aforementioned Clock Bar where expansive wine lists make selecting a single glass seem impractical. Off the main lobby, the swanky, cool bar matches the luxurious air of the rest of the hotel so you can feel like royalty while you sip wines from across the globe. Don’t stay too long or you’ll miss the boat—a Hornblower cruise is your next stop. 98

All aboard! Catch your vessel at Pier 3 (Embarcadero and Washington streets) at 7 PM and enjoy a three-hour cruise across the bay (7:30-10:30 PM). Here you’ll be served a five-course dinner complete with wine, beer, and cocktails of choice. After your stomach is satisfied, head to the dance floor where a DJ takes requests to keep crowds engaged. Trips to the bar to stay hydrated—water, soda, hot tea, and coffee are also available—will break up the evening, but the best place to spend your time off the dance floor is on one of three outdoor decks where breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay are aplenty. There’s no shortage of space on the 183-foot California Hornblower for cruisers to marvel at the scenery while sailing underneath the Golden Gate Bridge, around Alcatraz, and through bay waters, even catching stunning views of the new Bay Bridge (which was completed in 2013). On July 4, the Hornblower is an ideal place to see the fireworks over the water.

At 10:30 PM as you slip back into Pier 3, head toward your hotel—but not to bed. Lefty O’Doul’s Restaurant & Cocktail Lounge (333 Geary St.) is overflowing with excitement. A steep staircase will lead you underground to a casual bar with dueling pianos for entertainment. Make a request, dance on stage, and finish your night strong. When the bar closes out at 2 AM, it’s time to call it a night. As you stroll the busy streets back to the Westin, grab a slice of pizza at Bella Luca (418 Geary St.)—the best place to pick up quality midnight snacks well after midnight. Cozy up in your Heavenly® bed and catch some Z’s. Another day of adventure waits.

Rub the sleep from your eyes and head downstairs for day two of your big city escape. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and you’ll need your energy. Stop into Mymy (150 California St.), a cozy (yet insanely popular) breakfast stop downtown. The colorful café specializes in morning fare like eggs Benedict, pancakes, and French toast. The lemon ricotta pancake blends house made ricotta with macerated strawberry coulis for a delectable breakfast plate you can top with Vermont maple syrup. For a more traditional dish, grab one of their famed Benedicts (from Norwegian to Perma Flavor, there’s an array to choose from). Fancy a mimosa? They’ve got those, too. Cheers! Now, hop in the car and head to the beach. Baker Beach is another top spot for grabbing photos of the Golden Gate, but parts of it are known for being a nude beach so the bridge is likely not the only spectacle you’ll see. For dazzling views of the Pacific Ocean, try Ocean Beach near Golden Gate Park. Long sandy stretches are a wonderful place to partake in a romantic morning stroll.

Bring a piece of cardboard—frequent sliders say that’s the best way to go! For more speed, wax your “board.” Next up, the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps (16th Ave.). Looking for a workout? Locals run up and down for a grueling cardio session. Or just marvel at how pretty they are—and snap some shots for your Instagram. Last up on your picturesque picture tour, the Painted Ladies (Steiner St.). Known for their appearance in the opening credits of popular sitcom Full House (also seen in Bicentennial Man and Invasion of the Body Snatchers), tourists love to visit these vibrantly colored houses dubbed “postcard row.” For the best photo op, head to Alamo Square Park and snap away. Inside tours are available if you plan ahead. Stop-off for lunch during your busy day of sightseeing. Worthwhile

spots include: Pluto’s (3258 Scott St. or 627 Irving St.) a mini-chain boasting out-of-this-world food; Pasquale’s Pizzeria Restaurant (700 Irving St.) an Italian eatery in Inner Sunset featuring hand-tossed pizzas to share and other traditional Italian cuisine; and Calzone’s (430 Columbus Ave.) in North Beach where you should honestly just get a calzone. After you’ve had a chance to get ready for your second night on the town, head to the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar (950 Mason St.), a tiki-themed longue in the Fairmont Hotel where Pacific Rim cuisine and tropical drinks (complete with tiny umbrellas) reign supreme. If you still have the energy to carry on, there are loads of nighttime activities. Ruby Skye (420 Mason St.) is just down the street, complete with VIP booths and live music. If nightclubs tickle your fancy, continue to Slide (430 Mason St.) where a ride down a giant slide is a whimsical entrance to this upbeat hotspot with an impressive roster of DJs.

If you choose to skip the club scene all together, opt for a (slightly) low-key night. Beach Blanket Babylon (678 Beach Blanket Babylon Blvd.) is a city show with a twist. Forgo the Broadway musicals and instead get lost in this insanely funny, hilariously campy, and slightly inappropriate musical revue with a focus on current events. Before heading out of town, there’s just enough time to grab another hearty breakfast. Squat & Gobble Café & Creperie (with three locations in the city) is a worthy last stop. The Chestnut Street location (2263 Chestnut St.) is closest to the Westin. Go traditional with a plate full of Belgian waffles, pancakes, or French toast, or try one of the café’s specialties like the Breakfast Burrito (filled to the brim with eggs, peppers, cheese, ranchero, and more) or the Crab Cake Florentine (two crab cakes, two poached eggs, and sautéed spinach on an English muffin). the calorie count, a peach helps you haul in a little bit of your necessary need for vitamin C, vitamin A and copper while taking care of any pesky sugar cravings you’re dredging through. Look for the Freestone variation May through September in your local farmers market if you want to bite into one fresh off the tree, as this type separates easily from its pit! Buy too many? No problem! Mash a few together and add a little honey and egg whites for the perfect home-made facial.

GRILLED Vanilla PEACHES INGREDIENTS:

8 freestone peaches • 1 lemon 1 tbsp. vegetable oil 1 1/2 tbsp. packed light-brown sugar 2 tsp. water • 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1/8 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/8 tsp. coarse salt 1 quart vanilla ice cream DIRECTIONS:

Peel, halve, and pit peaches. Preheat grill to high. Combine lemon juice and vegetable oil in a bowl. Add peaches; toss to coat. Place peaches (with liquid) on a large piece of parchment-lined foil. Stir together brown sugar, water, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt. Brush over peaches. Fold foil to form a packet, crimping edges to seal. Grill, covered, for 15 minutes. LEATHER INGREDIENTS:

3 cups sliced peaches • 1 tablespoon honey DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 150 degrees (if your oven doesn’t go this low, set it at the lowest temperature). Line a baking sheet with a non-stick silicone baking mat. Place sliced organic peaches and honey in a blender (leave skins on the peaches if you have a high-powered blender that can pulverize them; otherwise you can peel peaches before slicing). Puree until smooth. Pour pureed peaches onto baking mat. Tilt and rotate pan to spread mixture across surface of mat. Holding pan at both ends, bang on the kitchen counter a few times to evenly distribute the puree. Place tray in oven and bake for 2-3 hours. (Set the timer for two hours, then check every 15 minutes until surface is tacky but no longer wet—mixture should not come off on your fingertip when touched). Let cool slightly, then remove mat from the pan and place on cutting board. While leather is still on mat, cut into strips with a pizza cutter. One of the finest places to enjoy the outdoors this summer is at Oak Farm Vineyards, a vineyard and tasting room located on the original DeVries Estate in Lodi where 400+ year old oak trees, extensive lawns, and large patios are punctuated by historical buildings. A 2014-built tasting room—a focal point of the estate—beckons for guests to come and indulge. Outside, Oak Farm winemakers take advantage of the unique soil and climate conditions in the Lodi AVA to produce handcrafted, small-lot, and single-vineyard varietals. Cabernet sauvignon, malbec, petite sirah, petite bourdeaux, sangiovese, barbera, and zinfandel are all grown onsite, as are white varietals, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, 108

and the Portuguese grape verdelho. Paying special attention to where a grape grows best, the label sources fruit from other locales to create the rest of their line-up. Inside, staff pours a unique assortment of Northern Mediterranean wines, including two newly released 2016 New World International Wine Competition gold-award winners: the 2015 Sauvignon Blanc and Albarino. In addition to the main tasting room, which offers breathtaking views of the estate’s vineyards, there are two private tasting rooms available. The first features granite countertops, a gas fireplace, rustic boardroom tables, and televisions. The latter, which used to serve as the estate’s main tasting room, has a private wine bar and personal courtyard.
