Men’s Health Happy Father’s Day, San Joaquin! This month

“To live an extraordinary life, one must resist an ordinary approach.” – Frank McKinney

we bring you our Men’s Health issue. That’s right— masculinity doesn’t have to be toxic, and we’re here to show you how. Flip through Nora Heston Tarte’s feature about Men’s Health to learn how to be a better man through weight loss, exercise, and nutrition. Let our editor Nora introduce you to three local experts on the subjects, as well as tips and tricks you may not have thought of before. But maybe your joy comes from being in the backyard by the grill. I know mine does. That’s where food and wine editor Suzanne Ledbetter comes in: she’ll give you the run down on all the local rubs, sauces, and grilling tips that will spice up your summer BBQ game. You may not be the new kid on the block, but you’ll certainly be the most popular one! Whether it’s weight loss, exercise, or engaging in your favorite hobbies, incorporating healthy habits in your life is important to maintain your well-being in the long-term. Make a habit of meal prepping with our Nutritionist Deirdre Carlson, or travel to the Sierra Foothills to sample some of Rombauer’s finest wines with Travel Editor Nora. Looking for more of a family vacation? Consider Boise, Idaho as your brood’s next favorite city—flip through this month’s Escape for more information. And while you’re at it, how about you take your wife on a date night? A little more focus on your love life won’t hurt anyone. You know what they say: happy wife, happy life. Check out our charcuterie round up in the food section for the hottest spots to fill up on cheese, meats, and dried fruits while you and your loved one sip on fine wines from across the Lodi appellation. Oh, and this one’s for the boys: be sure to read up on the four major beer festivals and events going on in San Joaquin this summer. They’re the perfect opportunity for a great guy’s night out. We hope you enjoy this month’s issue—and ladies, don’t skip the guy-stuff. Suzanne’s grilling feature boasts some great options for the perfect Father’s Day gift! Thanks for reading,

LAST THOUGHTS BLESSED BE THE FRUIT. I’ve been craving fruit juice lately. No, not the kind that you can find in the grocery store in 2-liter plastic bottles, but the kind that’s freshly pressed, delicious, and refreshing. One of San Joaquin’s newest businesses, Fruitful Juice Co., has a heart for health, their church, and their community— give them a try at their Hammer Lane location.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING. When’s the last time you’ve been to the San Joaquin Historical Society? It’s so important for us to recognize how amazing this land is where we live, and how much we contribute to this beautiful country of ours. Exploring our past is the best way to do that.

The rich history of San Joaquin County cannot be understated, but many who live here often underestimate, or worse, forget that fact. While the San Joaquin Historical Society & Museum in Lodi is a popular spot for fieldtrips and school functions, it’s also the home of over 50,000 historic objects representative of the history of our county, from artifacts from the Native American peoples who lived here first, to the historic buildings that have been here since the days of Charles Weber. This month at the San Joaquin Historical Society is a very special time for one of those artifacts: the revolutionary Holt “75 Caterpillar” Tractor celebrates its 100th birthday. Not only did its rumbling tracks build the Delta as we know it, but it also unofficially helped us win World War I by hauling heavy artillery for the British, French, and American armies. “Most types of earth moving equipment were invented in San Joaquin county,” says Philip Merlo, Director of Education and Visitor Services at the San Joaquin Historical Museum. “But the Holt famwww.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

ily revolutionized agriculture.” Most notably, Benjamin Leroy Holt. You’ll have no doubt at least seen his name on one of the most trafficked roads in Stockton, Benjamin Holt Drive, but the real-life Benjamin was an American inventor who created the first crawler-type tread tractor, the Holt 75 Caterpillar. Its unique tread allowed it to climb slopes and haul heavy materials without the need for horses. In both domestic and foreign affairs, this innovation was a game-changer—and the San Joaquin Historical Society & Museum doesn’t intend to forget it. “On June 22, we’ll be having a ‘birthday party’ for the tractor and have a large celebration,” says Philip. “We’re hoping to honor the Holt family.” With an exhibit explaining the tractor’s role in the military, as well as our domestic economy, this event is a fascinating way to explore and understand San Joaquin’s impact on the country at large. 28

OTHER HAPPENINGS AT SAN JOAQUIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY & MUSEUM

As Director of Education at the San Joaquin Historical Society & Museum, Philip Merlo thinks of himself as both a historian and an educator. “It’s a powerful experience to find out where you’re from,” he muses. “It’s important for all people to know and have ownership over their own stories. History is one way to do that.” One of the most important objects used to help kids understand their identity is the Calaveras School House. Built in the 19th century, this one-room school house was the last of its kind in San Joaquin until it shut down in 1959. It was moved to the Museum grounds in 1976 and still hosts weekly classes of fifth graders from schools across San Joaquin county through their “Valley Days” program. With the boys clad in button ups and the

girls in dresses and bonnets, the school children are ushered in by the school teacher to learn the 1880s state curriculum for a day. “It’s very cool for them to see how far we’ve come,” Philip adds. Apart from the schoolhouse, there’s a working blacksmith shop from the 1880’s, the house of Julia Weber (Captain Charles M. Weber’s only daughter), an ag equipment center, and much more. This being one of San Joaquin’s most prominent museums, it’s also home to a vast, publicly-accessible archive of over a million documents from throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, all pertaining to San Joaquin County. There you will find everything from the Charles Weber family collections, to historic collections of SJ County court cases dating back to the 1870s, as well as a large historic photo collection. “We are the county’s archival institution, so if you’re interested in learning about the community, this is the place to be,” declares Philip. Whether you’re looking for something family-friendly to do on the weekend, hoping to invigorate your child’s mind over summer break, or just wanting to know more about this amazing county we call home, the San Joaquin Historical Society & Museum has everything you need for a learning experience that’s actually tons of fun. “The San Joaquin Historical Society & Museum is a hidden gem in this county,” says Philip. “We don’t get a lot of publicity, but we serve tens of thousands of people per year, have amazing exhibits, and hands-on, fun education programs.” Philip and the rest of the staff invite you and your family to join in on the fun this summer!

MEAL PREP 101

NOT IN THE HABIT OF PLANNING AHEAD? THAT MAY BE A RECIPE FOR DISASTER  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Ever fantasize about how much easier life would be if you didn’t constantly have to find recipes, buy groceries, prep and cook ingredients, and clean up a messy kitchen? Sounds amazing, right?

The solution you’re seeking is simple: meal prep. Instead of going through the grueling daily routine listed above, welcome to the art of planning and preparing some or all of your meals in advance. The beauty of meal prep is that it can adapt to fit your cooking expertise, lifestyle, and personal dietary needs. And there is no one-size-fits-all approach or "right" way to meal prep.

1. The Benefits Meal prepping is meant to help simplify your routine and lifestyle. It saves you time and money all while helping you stick to a cleaner eating plan. Having meals made ahead of time is extremely helpful to avoid impulsively ordering meals from restaurants or fast-food restaurants and ensures you always have options to fit your dietary needs. Research shows that people 30

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

who plan their meals have healthier diets, eat more fruits and veggies, and are less likely to be obese.

2. What to Prep Start by making a grocery list so you know exactly what you need. Set aside 1-2 hours of time for your meal prep and keep it simple - Choose no more than 4-6 recipes unless time allows for more. Stock up on functional meal prep containers to make the overall process more organized. And what to prep? Some personal favorites are overnight oats, hard boiled eggs, trail mix, roasted vegetables, mason jar salads, and one pot meals. It is also a good idea to keep your pantry and freezer stocked with quick go-to items such as frozen brown rice or quinoa, salsa, low-sodium broth, and plain oatmeal, just to name a few.

3. How to Keep it Interesting Obviously, you’re going to have a few standbys you rely on every week, but try to incorporate one new recipe each week to keep from getting burnt out on your go-to foods. Add more color to your meal prep with brightly-colored produce like red berries, yellow peppers, dark leafy greens, and purple onions. Even carbs can be colorful - try sweet potatoes, yellow corn, or purple yams instead of the usual grains. And be sure to add a healthy dose of spices to add flavor to your foods. No one wants to eat something bland.

REMEMBER WHEN

100 YEARS of ROOT BEER A&W CELEBRATES 100 YEARS IN BUSINESS  BY NORA HESTON TARTE The first ever A&W Restaurant opened as a drink stand on Pine St. in Lodi. Since then the restaurant chain has undergone many changes—and a lot of expansion reaching over 1,000 stores globally—much of which has happened right here in Lodi. “A&W has come a long way since 1919,” says Pete Knight, an A&W franchisee and owner of two locations (one in Lodi and one in St. Helena). Businessman Roy Allen set up the original stand at 13 Pine St. (the address now belongs to a dog grooming salon) during a parade in 1919. It was so successful that he decided to open A&W on summer evenings and weekends. During prohibition, when it began, the

32

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

drink stand was extremely profitable, partially because each storefront was made to look like a bar and root beers were always served in frosted mugs, a practice the restaurant still follows today. The story is that Roy bought the infamous recipe used for A&W root beer from an Arizona pharmacist. The first batch was made during that 1919 parade. The next A&W location was opened in Sacramento, located in an old wagon Roy would park on a street corner outside of the movie theatre. It also sold peanuts and other snacks, which became a staple across company stands. Next it expanded to Utah and Texas, places Roy lived, before franchising discounts offered to veterans after WWII and in conjunction with the GI Bill created growth opportunities in every state. “The reason A&W has been so successful is they have been able to change with the times,” Pete says. The company stood strong throughout prohibition, WWII, and even sugar rationings. As cars became popular, A&W became one of the first restaurants to offer carhops. Later, indoor seating was added to keep sales up over winter. Even women’s rights have a place in A&W history: during WWII women became carhops, a profession previously only offered to men.

WINE ESCAPE

ROMBAUER VINEYARDS THE SIERRA FOOTHILLS ' NEWEST TASTING ROOM IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS  BY NORA HESTON TARTE Rombauer Vineyards has landed in Plymouth! The Sierra Foothills—45 minutes

from Lodi—are home to the newest location of the winery giant (with its original tasting room in Napa). You’ve no doubt seen their wines on restaurant menus across San Joaquin. If you’re a fan, you’ll be pleased to hear Rombauer purchased 40 acres in the Sierra Foothills, including a tasting room, production facility, and 20 acres of vineyards at 12225 Steiner Rd. in Plymouth, the previous site of Renwood Winery. Now instead of fans driving several hours north for sips of Rombauer’s more exclusive wines, San Joaquinians can simply pop over to Plymouth to fill their glass. The lush grounds are the ideal place to sit back and relax with a glass of Rombauer Chardonnay or a Napa Cabernet. Surrounded by tall trees, the property has been rebranded but not re-developed. The expansive indoor and outdoor spaces include a tasting bar and covered patio where guests are invited to picnic with pre-packaged cheese, charcuterie, crackers, and jams available for purchase, or bring a picnic of their own. Because a large percentage of Rombauer grapes are already grown in El Dorado County, customers will taste fresh, local grapes made (mostly) in Rombauer’s Plymouth backyard. “You’ll taste locally-sourced and produced Zinfandels from Rombauer’s estate and grower vineyards in the Sierra Foothills, as well as our tried and true favorites from Carneros and Napa Valley,” says Heather Rehnberg, director of marketing for Rombauer Vineyards. The soft opening took place in mid-April and word of Rombauer’s second home is spreading fast. The grand opening, however, won’t hit until September. Eat at Taste. The downtown restaurant was designated as one of Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s Top 100 Wine Restaurants in America.

Indulge in Wine Ice Cream. Prospect Cellars serves alcoholic, wine-infused ice cream in vino-inspired flavors.

CLOTHES, COMFORT, & COMMUNITY AT WILLOW TREE CHILDREN’S BOUTIQUE  BY CAITLIN HAMER It can be tough to balance work and your personal life, no matter what your situation is.

Add parenthood into the mix, and things get even more complicated. But there are some who are fortunate enough to blend those worlds together, and Mindy Compton is one of them. “I wanted to do something where I could be a mom first,” explains Mindy. Before purchasing Willow Tree Children’s Boutique in Lodi, her previous job had allowed her to take her daughter to work. When it was time for a career change, Mindy’s background in child development and retail made purchasing Willow Tree the next natural step. And she’s brought her mother, Jan Campbell, on board, in addition to being able to bring her daughter to work. “She thinks she runs the place,” laughs Mindy, speaking of her three-and-a-halfyear-old daughter, Everly. “She tells people what to buy.” Willow Tree Boutique carries a charming selection of clothes for babies and children (sizes newborn up to 6x), accessories, and toys. Shoppers can find clothing brands like Kickee Pants, Mayoral, and Isabella and 36

Chloe, shoes by Native and Mini Melissa, and blankets by Little Giraffe. “It’s a really unique store that everyone comes in and is excited,” says Mindy. “You’re meeting people who just found out they’re pregnant or becoming grandparents or aunts and uncles – it’s cool to be a part of that.” But beyond selling the most adorable little clothes imaginable, Mindy is also striving to use her space for a greater good. “I wanted to open the store as a resource and not just a place to buy cute things,” says Mindy, explaining that the support system she found after having her daughter inspired her to make Willow Tree a hub for information, education, and all the support that mothers need. From a play area for little ones, to a changing table, as well as a nursing area for moms who prefer to breastfeed in private, Willow Tree is a comfortable and welcoming spot. And it’s a spot for fun: Willow Tree regularly hosts pop up events, like cooking decorating classes with Ainslie Lane Cookie Studio, paint classes with Painted Cellars Lodi, Jewels and Jem Princess parties, and tea parties. For Mindy, being able to connect with the

community is a massively rewarding part of her job; but so is having Everly around. “What a better way to be a mom first – showing her that you work hard.” GET WILD ABOUT WILLOW TREE: WILLOW TREE CHILDREN’S BOUTIQUE 120 N School St., Lodi (209) 339-7300

“The Arc provides education and support to connect people to meaningful and valued experiences like paid work, recreation, volunteering, and adult development education.”

ACHIEVING INDEPENDENCE HOW THE ARC SAN JOAQUIN IS MAKING LIVES BETTER EVERY DAY  BY CAITLIN HAMER D The most important life journeys are about the experiences and people you meet along the way. For 65 years, The Arc San Joaquin has helped individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and families on their personal journeys of independence and inclusion. First founded in 1954, The Arc San Joaquin is a non-profit agency that provides services to people with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities. “The Arc provides education and supports to connect people to meaningful and valued experiences like paid work, recreation, volunteering and adult development education,” explains Connie Uychutin, Executive Director. Services include supported employment and adult day supports. Adult day supports blend community involvement, adult life skill education, health 38

condition and essential care, behavior coaching, and adaptive communication. This makes it possible for individuals with high and significant support needs to have access to adult experiences to become more independent, self-sufficient, and successful. In the coming months, The Arc looks forward to increasing volunteer opportunities for individuals to learn hard and soft work skills in addition to being part of a team serving the community. “The Arc staff are support professionals and assist individuals to reach the goals they’re trying to achieve,” says Jan Todd, Director of Operations. Ultimately, though, independence is what they strive for – whether it’s fixing a snack, learning how to communicate their needs, or meeting volunteer work performance goals. For individuals in The Arc’s vocational program, the level of independence sought is employment and improving their lives. “About nine out of ten individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are unemployed for a variety of reasons, including misconceptions and lack of awareness that services and incentives

exist to mutually support people with disabilities and local businesses to succeed,” explains Connie. But Erica Haskell, Vocational Program Manager, says the solution is simple: education. “Part of our role is to go in and work together as a team. It’s just breaking down barriers and getting people educated,” she says. With ample hiring opportunities within the Central Valley, The Arc’s team is optimistic about bridging that gap. If you are interested in helping The Arc continue their incredible work, they welcome non-profits with volunteer opportunities, businesses wanting to learn more about inclusive hiring, persons interested in Board Membership, and direct support volunteers. Don King is, well, kind of the king of weight loss. “I’ve been big my whole life,” Don says, adding that he hit 350 pounds as a freshman in high school. Recently, however, he has cut his weight, opened a restaurant, and dedicated his life to healthier living.

EAT THIS, NOT THAT

like things that have a crunch to them,” Don says.

The flavor may not be the same, but reaching for a Michelob Ultra or Corona Light can keep a beer craving at bay. Darker, heavier beers carry more calories.

KEY BACON

Protein bars can mimic a candy bar, especially if the bar has chunks of dark chocolate in it.

In fact, using turkey as a substitute for most meats is a good rule of thumb. Change out sausage, ground beef, and more with turkey.

REPLACE SWEETS WITH FRUIT

Fruit can satisfy any craving for cake, ice cream, or candy because of the natural sugar content. 56

The path to weight loss isn’t the same for everyone. For Don, it took gastric bypass surgery to get him on the right track. He wasn’t a gym guy and his weight only yo-yo’ed with Weight Watchers. “I got to a point where I hit 598 pounds,” he shares. And that number helped him finally commit to the surgical procedure he’d toyed with for three-and-a-half years. “I was stress eating like nobody’s business and I couldn’t figure out what was keeping me so big,” Don says. “After losing the weight I realized the stress was what was making me eat so much.” For Don a complete lifestyle overhaul was necessary. He quit his stressful job and opened Fat City BBQ, an award-winning restaurant in SJ County. Less stress has helped him keep the weight off, even while owning a BBQ joint. His core menu items may not be salads, but it is protein—tri-tip, ribs, and pulled pork. He also serves keto meals.

The biggest changes in his life aren’t physical either. With less stress and less weight to carry around, Don says he is living a fuller life, one where he can play with his kids and keep up, participate in family activities, and work a 17-hour day without problems. He’s also more independent. Gastric bypass was the perfect choice for Don, but it isn’t the only road to weight loss. For most, a mix of diet and exercise will suffice, but one doesn’t work well without the other. Find ways you enjoy to get active, either outside, at a gym, or at home. For Don, playing with his kids is a good source of activity. Then, cook healthy foods, buck processed junk, and cut sugar. It only takes 21 days to make something a habit.

If you need support, find some. Friends and family who can keep you accountable are great, but sometimes a person dedicated to your personal weight loss journey is the best addition. Weight Watchers creates community in weight loss so you aren’t going alone. Don successfully lost 80 pounds on the program. A personal trainer can motivate your positive body change, too. Meal replacements are helpful for those that need to cut calories. Look at shakes and juices to reduce daily caloric intake. The best ones are low in sugar but high in protein.

BEST TRAILS IN SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY

Grab the hiking shoes, the bikes, the dog, the family—whatever you choose—and hit some of San Joaquin County’s best trails.

LODI LAKE

This trail is perfect for the family, or for timing yourself on an all-terrain run. Trek the 1.8 miles around Lodi Lake with views of wildflowers. Stay to fish or play in the water—kayak rentals are nearby.

CALAVERAS RIVER PEDESTRIAN PATH

Take a hike near the river. This out-andback trail stretches 4.2 miles and is a good option for bringing Fido (as long as he is leashed).

PARADISE POINT VIA ATHERTON ROAD

This trail offers similar river views to Calaveras. The 5-mile out-and-back trail is open to mountain and road bikes. Run early or late—there is no shade on this path.

WHITE SLOUGH LONG LOOP

Take this 8.4-mile nature loop on a delta levee, which circles private farmland. It’s a flat trail great for runners.

MANTECA TIDEWATER BIKEWAY

Head to Manteca on bike or foot to take advantage of the 7.1-mile-out-and-back trail. Many like the bikeway because it’s paved.

EXERCISE

Fitness isn’t one size fits all. Enjoying your workouts is often the key to finding fitness bliss. There are a lot of options to choose from in San Joaquin County. “It’s just as important to vibe with the team and members as it is to have top notch equipment,” says Damien Weber, manager of operations for learning and development and a trainer at InShape. “Find somewhere you are comfortable that is devoted to creating a welcoming environment while also offering the best fitness solutions for your goals.” Many gym-goers like a classic facility where they can work out as they please. Choose one with plenty of equipment to work the full body if this is your jam. If classes are more your speed, consider your options. Most gym facilities, such as In-Shape and Twin Arbors Athletic Club, offer classes with membership. However, class-only options such as Orangetheory Fitness or Crossfit 209 may be better for you. For those who need motivation to get going, consider hiring a personal trainer. Ben Mackie Fitness focuses on trainer-led fitness programs (as well as group classes). Whether you want one-on-one attention, like to work out with friends, or find solo gym time most appealing, San Joaquin County has options to satisfy your needs—no excuses! EXERCISE & HEART HEALTH

Heart disease is the most common cause of death for men in the United States. As you get older, it’s important to watch your cholesterol levels and maintain a healthy amount of physical activity. According to Dr. Ramin Manshadi of the Manshadi Heart Institute, 30 to 60 minutes of regular aerobic exercise four times a week can reduce your risk of heart disease and reduce your levels of LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol.

DO YOU EVEN LIFT, BRO?

If you’re looking to add weight lifting to your fitness routine, don’t just pick up a dumbbell and go. While it may look like there’s nothing to it, safe, productive lifting takes work. Damian Weber, manager of operations for learning and development and a trainer at In-Shape, provides his best tips for first timers. 1. CONSISTENCY IS KEY. When you’re new to a lifting program, every day will be different. At In-Shape, we’d rather our clients follow our program 80 percent of the time for four months than following it perfectly for one month. 2. FOCUS ON QUALITY OVER QUANTITY. Training with proper form is more important than completing a bunch of reps with form that is slightly off. 3. TRAIN TO FATIGUE, NOT TO FAILURE. Fatigue is when you can no longer perform proper form, but failure is when you can no longer perform at all. 4. START SIMPLY, THEN PROGRESS. Try not to overcomplicate your sessions. As a new lifter, total body and compound exercises like deadlifts, squats, and overhead presses are great. 5. PRETEND THE 15-POUND DUMBBELL WEIGHS 100 POUNDS. Most weight lifting injuries occur when people are grabbing a weight, or re-racking with a rounded back or throwing it up with one arm. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

6. PERFECT THE PLANK. A properly performed plank, and its variations, is critical to a new lifting program because power, strength, and stability come from the core. 7. START SLOWLY. Start with two to three days a week of full body exercises, then increase to four days a week when the body is ready, and so on. 8. WORK WITH A TRAINER. Trainers are personal coaches that help you learn your way around a weight room. Members that work with trainers are more likely to reach fitness goals. 9. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. Rest and recovery are important. Start slowly and build up when your body is ready. Progress is better than perfection. 10. YOU CAN NEVER OUT TRAIN A BAD DIET. You’re not going to see results until you change what you’re doing in the kitchen.

NUTRITION

Fitness goals are never met unless part of our transformation happens in the kitchen. What you put in your body will dictate overall body composition. Looking to build muscle, support a healthy fitness routine, and lose weight? Protein is key. But Mark Sarale, franchisee for Nekter Juice Bar and Max Muscle, says there’s more to it than that.

SPILLING

THE JUICE

Protein shakes and juice drinks can pack a lot of nutrients. With so many ingredients to choose from, how do you pick? Start with these seven key items to build smoothies for overall nutrition. Mark Sarale recommends building a few items from this list into any smoothie recipe. Or, go full boar by adding apple or orange to make a (earthy-tasting) power smoothie.

pressure, and improve brain health. KALE – It’s a super-food known for its omega 3 fatty acids, low calories, and many nutrients CELERY – Aids digestion and improves gut health, plus it’s high in fiber CARROTS – High in antioxidants, good for skin **All available at Nekter Juice Bar

BEST FOODS TO BUILD YOUR BODY Good foods are the building blocks for a healthy body. “I like to just kind of stick to the basics,” Mark says. “Protein is the most important thing.”

PICKING THE RIGHT PROTEIN POWDER

Don’t just point, click, and add-to-cart. Choose a protein powder that meets both individual requirements and fitness goals. The most important element of any protein powder is quality. Everyone should be careful what protein powder they take. “There is a difwww.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

ference in the quality of proteins,” Mark warns. “You’ve just got to make sure it’s a good company that is true to label.” In most cases a protein shake acts as a meal replacement. If weight loss is the goal, choose a powder with zero sugar and carbohydrates that is less than 100 calories per serving. For those looking to gain weight—usually high school kids or those trying to bulk—purchase a 1,000-2,000 calorie protein powder but cut the portion size. Always check the label to ensure the calories are coming from proteins and carbohydrates, not sugar. A good ratio to abide by is 30 grams of protein for every 100 grams of carbohydrates. If you purchase Weight Gainer 2,000, cut the serving to one-fourth for a healthy serving. Lean muscle builds better without carbohydrates, but for those wanting to bulk up, a powder with moderate carbohydrates will work better. Keep this in mind: whey protein casein is a long acting protein so it will stay in your body longer. Whey protein isolate is good for both preand post-workout. Whey protein concentrate is middle of the road. For an overall, well-balanced supplement, buy one with all three. If you are vegan or avoid dairy products, switch to a vegan, plant-based protein derived from pea or hemp proteins. TO LEARN MORE:

grilling LOCAL RUBS, SAUCES & FLAVORS Must Have Local Items

Mydingr’s-BBQ Shake This Spice Rub is my go-to for all things pork. Made by a husband and wife duo, Don and Vickie Meidinger, this zesty blend of seasonings is the perfect blend for your baby back ribs or pork butt. With paprika, salt, pepper, sugar, dehydrated, onion and garlic…you will grab this rub anytime you fire up the grill.

Waterloo BBQ Sauce Another local staple in the San Joaquin BBQ scene. Made by the good folks over at Waterloo Restaurant, this is the same sweet and savory sauce they slather on their epic BBQ baby back ribs. And slather is your ribs is exactly what you should do at home. The sweetness in the sauce will give you just the right amount of caramelization you crave on BBQ meat.

Fiori’s Butcher Shoppe Deli Seasoning This crowd-pleasing seasoning is perfect for filets, chicken, lamb, or veggies. A combination of spices, salt, garlic, onion, celery, and lemon oil make this an all-around winner! Available at the Butcher Shoppe or online at www.fiorisdeli.com

Flamethrowers BBQ and Chili Co. Beef Rub This rub is made by some serious BBQ aficionados. A retired firefighter and BBQ competition buff, Mike Harden and his wife Cynthia launched their own set of spice rubs after competing at national BBQ competitions. A perfect blend of spices and free of MSG or anti-caking agents, you will need this for the next time you fire up a prime rib or Rib Eye. Available online at www.flamethrowerbbqco.com

Smoke it Up

Tips to the Ultimate Baby Back Ribs SUZANNE’S SMOKIN’ BABY BACK RIBS

Remove the ribs from the packaging and place on a foil-lined cookie sheet. Generously apply rib rub, cover in foil, and place in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Turn on your Traeger smoker to 225 degrees. Place ribs on racks and smoke low and slow for three hours. You will then want to baste your ribs with a thin, Texas style BBQ sauce like Bone Suckin Sauce and cook for one hour additional. Raise your smoker to 325 degrees, slather in your favorite BBQ sauce and cook for and additional hour to caramelize the BBQ sauce. The result is tender, pull off the bone baby back ribs that will become your signature summertime staple.

SUMMER Cool Down!  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

June 21 marks the first day of summer, and we can all but guarantee most San Joaquinians will be turning those thermostat dials lower and lower as the summer wears on. Instead of watching the heating bill go up while your home temperature plummets, get ahead of the problem. Try these quick switches to make summer cooling a breeze.

Replace or Service your HVAC

Servicing your HVAC before summer hits will save time and money. HVAC units are more likely to go out in times of extreme heat, like during a heat wave, which is exactly when you don’t want to be without air conditioning. If your HVAC is in good working order, schedule a service. HVAC techs from companies like Lovotti Air, Inc. can come in and check that your system is running optimally. This not only could prevent a meltdown later this summer, a clean unit costs less to run helping your pocketbook benefit. If replacement of parts or the entire unit is necessary it’s better to do it now than later. Costs with many companies can go up during peak service hours and dates, or during an emergency.

Invest in Window Coverings

Covering windows with blinds, shutters, or curtains sounds like a solid plan for the winter months, but why would you want to employ this tactic during summer? While these items keep heat in during winter months, they also keep heat out in summer months. You may want to trade out heavy curtains for lighter, linen options over summer, but don’t get rid of them all together. If you already have one layer, consider adding a second layer. Placing a second curtain behind the first one can help keep sunlight out. Or, put curtains over blinds for the same effect.

Cool Down the Color Scheme

Embrace summer in the dĂŠcor. Light colors such as blues, whites, yellows, and other pastels easily brighten up a space. These items may not have any ability to literally cool your home, but when you trade out dark winter reds and browns for lighter hues, your home feels airier. Make the change from winter to summer in other parts of the home. For example, pack away the winter-scented sugar cookie candles and replace them with cool, summer scents like fresh fruit and pina colada

home Change Out Linens & More

There is no rule that says you must keep the same comforter year round. Opt for a lighter comforter this time of year instead of kicking off covers every night. Or, invest in a quilt, which may be a less expensive option. Think about the sheets, too. Skip sweat-creating satin or flannel sheets and instead opt for breathable cotton. Make other changes around the home like putting away thick couch blankets and other bulk items used to keep warm.

Stop Using the Stove

We’re not saying to let the stove hibernate until fall, but you could certainly use it less. Cooking with the stove or oven can quickly heat your home to an uncomfortable temperature. Create cold meals like salads when possible. When you need to cook, consider the alternatives. A Crockpot or instant pot lets off less heat. On cool nights, fire up the barbecue instead!

Utilize Ceiling Fans

Add ceiling fans to rooms without. Every bedroom and living space can benefit from a fan. Remember to buy one that is the correct size. A too-small fan won’t cool a space well. If your home isn’t wired for extra fans, and you don’t want to make the investment, buy standing fans that offer the same cool down. For existing fans, don’t forget to switch the fan blade direction. On most fans, one setting is meant for warm air, and the other is better for cooling.

 BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Discover amazing things when you visit Boise, Idaho. School’s out for summer! Grab the kids and hit the road! Boise is an unsuspecting place for a family vacation, but the growing city is packed with attractions and activities for those of all ages. Play inside and outside on waterslides, roller coasters, minigolf, and more, while also soaking in the natural beauty of Southwestern Idaho on hikes, bike rides, and the water.

FAMILY FUN

Wahooz! It’s not just what you’ll be screaming as you walk into the family fun center, WAHOOZ! is the name of the 8-acre indoor/outdoor fun zone featuring 17 attractions, located next door to Roaring Springs. If you spent all morning at the water park, you can spend all evening here, including dining in at the CLUBHOUSE GRILL. The 70,000+-square foot arena features rides, a ropes course, rock climbing, an indoor climbing gym with ball guns, a laser maze, arcade games, and more. All of the rides are located inside and many are reminiscent of attractions you’d see at the fair, including a twisting, rotating, lifting contraption complete with spinning capsules called the Twister. Don’t forget to bowl at PINZ, too; there is an upscale longue featuring eight lanes for those who want a little extra. Some of the fun is outdoors, perfect for those warm Idaho evenings. Ride the go-karts, play a round of mini golf, or hop in the bumper boats for a spin. 1385 S. Blue Marlin Ln. SELECT PHOTOS: BOISE CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU

TIPS FOR HIKING WITH KIDS:

AQUARIUM OF BOISE

The aquarium in Boise isn’t huge. In fact, it’s kind of set off in a nondescript shopping center next to some other stores. While kids can wander through the exhibits to see different kinds of fish, sharks, rays, and other underwater creatures, it’s the interactive elements that make this attraction unique. Purchase food at the front desk and drop it in giant tanks of strange-looking fish. One tank is filled with fish that flip upside down to eat, which looks rather peculiar. Kids can dunk their hands right in—

The youngest adventurers tend to gravitate toward outdoor exploration, but this doesn’t mean they’ll be expert hikers. Consider these tips before starting a trail with your brood, especially if some family members are under the age of ten.

1. MANAGE EXPECTATIONS. If you embark on a hike with reasonable expectations in mind, you’ll set yourself up for success. Remember that kids will need breaks, they may get bored, and they may whine. You may even have to give into carrying the youngest family members for a bit. If you are cognizant of the potential challenges beforehand, you’ll be prepared and not surprised when they pop up.

2. CHOOSE WISELY. This doesn’t only refer to picking a trail that is manageable in length and difficulty for the entire family (although that is certainly important). Also think about your children’s interests when choosing a hike. If wild animals are fascinating to them, choose one with frequent sightings. If you have a birdwatcher in your crew, bring binoculars. Walks along the water are nice, and plentiful, in Idaho, but prepare for bugs and potential bites.

3. MAKE IT FUN. Don’t focus on getting from point A to point B the way you might on an adults-only hike. For kids, the journey is just as fun—sometimes more fun—than the destination, and you might be surprised just how enjoyable it can be for you, too. Let them roam. Just be careful they don’t get off course and into danger.

4. BRING SNACKS. Pick items that will fuel little bodies but that are also fun such as nuts, fruit, and more. Choose a treat such as a candy or a lollipop as a distraction when kids start to get cranky.

5. MAKE IT FUN. Play hiking games when kids get bored such as follow the leader or I spy. Honestly, sometimes just seeing who can find the biggest stick or the coolest rock is enough to keep kids engaged and gives them the boost of energy needed to carry on. 78

HIKE IDAHO

Aquarium of Boise

A huge draw of summer in Idaho is time spent outdoors. Hiking is a valuable pastime where families can enjoy vast views on high hills, grounds carpeted in wild flowers, and plenty of wildlife sightings. Pick a trail primed for every age in your group, and grab appropriate gear if you need to. On warm days, an early hike is often the best way to get started. See the sidebar for our top hiking picks in and around Boise.

KID PLEASERS

What kid-friendly vacation isn’t complete without a trip to the zoo, aquarium, and a park? We can’t think of one. Satisfy those family fun staples by stopping in to some of Idaho’s best attractions. Sure, you can do versions of these activities at home, but Boise’s offerings are more than just your typical stops.

Zoo Boise

Inside the open-air zoo there are 235 animals from every corner of the world, including some species native to Idaho. What makes it special: if you’ve never seen a sloth bear, you wouldn’t be the only one. At certain times throughout the day kids can feed the resident sloth bear during a special animal encounter. There is also a butterfly garden. Step inside and let the butterflies land on you as you walk through. Other cool features include face painting, a carousel, and giraffe feedings. 355 E. Julia Davis Dr.

warn them to be gentle—while feeding and really explore the different species. Other tide pools include sea urchins and starfish, plus a shark and ray pool featuring various shark species, bat rays, and stingrays that you can touch. There is also a bird aviary inside with colorful, talking parrots where guests can feed birds from their hands as they fly overhead and occasionally land on you. 64 N. Cole Rd.

Julia Davis Park

This park isn’t like any other. The city park is located in the heart of downtown and houses several prominent attractions. In addition to the zoo, Julia Davis Park is home to the BOISE ART MUSEUM, the IDAHO HISTORICAL MUSEUM, the IDAHO BLACK HISTORY MUSEUM, the IDAHO ROSE SOCIETY, and the GENE HARRIS BAND SHELL. Don’t forget to take in the views of the rose garden, punctuated by a gorgeous white gazebo in the center before hitting the more obvious park features—a playground and tennis court.

Roaring Springs

The last big draw of this expansive park is water access. In addition to the BOISE RIVER GREENBELT that runs through the park, there is a pond offering paddleboat rentals and a pedestrian bridge that connects to Boise State University. 700 S. Capitol Blvd.

ing may not sound like a family-friendly adventure, you’d be surprised! Some of the tasting rooms, like CINDER, fill corners with toys and feature long tables where families can play games or cards while the adults sip, although you may have to bring your own deck.

HIT THE SLIDES

Just outside of Boise, ID (about a 10-minute drive), the ROARING SPRINGS WATERPARK is the perfect way to waste a day (or two). Located about 10 miles outside of Boise in Meridian, the outdoor theme park has space for tots, tweens, and teenagers. Barefoot Bay caters to the youngest crowd with shallow water babes can stand up in and three slides complete with tubes so toddlers can feel like big kids. For the older, and perhaps more adventurous, crowd, the new corkscrew cavern

CASTLE ROCK LOOP. This is a good pick for families with young kids. The 2-mile loop offers wildlife sightings and awesome views at the top of a hill. The cadence is also good for kids. You get up to the top of the hill and then the second part of the trip is downhill. Dogs are welcome on this trail, too. BOISE CASCADE LAKE LOOP. This 1.3-mile-loop is another easy option for kids, with views of the lake. Keep in mind that high water levels sometimes close the loop, and there are bugs near the water this time of year. TABLE ROCK TRAIL. For more of a challenge, choose the popular Table Rock Trail. The moderately difficult path offers a higher elevation gain (895 feet) and views of wild flowers. BOISE RIVER GREENBELT TRAIL. This relatively flat trail caters to hikers of all skill levels, but it is long at 10.4 miles. Try trekking out just a few miles on the outand back trail and then turning around to cut the distance down. LUCKY PEAK LOOP. For experienced hikers, this hike is worth the trouble. The 13.6-mile loop is a difficult climb with a 3,166-foot elevation gain. Choose this one for the views on the backside of the mountain and the nature elements, including a bird observatory. When weather is ideal (typically over summer) the trail isn’t as hard to manage. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

WHERE TO STAY looping slide guarantees speed. Don’t forget to try the cliffhanger, too, a six-story vertical drop that takes just four seconds from top to bottom. Rent a cabana, grab lunch, and chill out. If you ask us, ice cream is mandatory. 400 W. Overland Rd.

WINE TASTING

Admittedly, when I think of Idaho, wine is not the first thing that comes to mind. As it turns out, however, the Snake River AVA that courses through Eastern Oregon and Southern Idaho is ideal for growing several varietals. While there are 46 vineyards in the AVA, there are only 15 wineries. Throughout the region cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, canadice, chardonnay, cinsault, gewürztraminer, Grenache, lemberger, malbec, merlot, mourvedre, Riesling and syrah are produced. GARDEN CITY, one mile outside of Boise city limits, is home to a line-up of tasting rooms. Located on 44th street, which looks a tad industrial, guests can walk up and down the stretch to hit three stops. While wine tast-

When it comes to traveling with kids, there are a few luxuries worth investing in. Make travel easier by booking a hotel that caters to the family experience. The OXFORD SUITES in Boise checks all the boxes. Indoor pool to wear kids out before bedtime – check! Free breakfast served buffet style (not continental) – check! Evening receptions with free beer and wine for you – check! Book a room sized for your family. A three-queen suite offers extra beds, while other rooms boast full kitchens. 1426 S. On June 8, Zoo Boise will celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar with special attractions all day (9 AM- 5 PM). Kids can meet the famous caterpillar, complete crafts inspired by the storybook, and watch zoo animals get toys and treats inspired by the story.

BIRDING & MORE

WHERE TO EAT

Trek out to the hillsides of Boise, miles from the city center, to find the WORLD CENTER FOR BIRDS OF PREY. Those interested in getting up close and personal with raptors, vultures, owls, and more, can visit birds in cages, attend a live demonstration with a resident owl, and even catch the birds in flight. The collection includes more than 200 different birds, including both native and non-native species. 5668 W. Flying Hawk Ln.

You’ll need food to fuel you between all of these adventures. Check out these family-friendly places to grab meals along the way.

Boise Fry Company

It should be no surprise that we’re suggesting eating potatoes in Idaho, but the Boise Fry Company takes their fry offerings seriously. Instead of serving one or two kinds of fries to accompany your burger, this restaurant serves six kinds of potatoes in five different cuts. Don’t forget to sample sauces from the self-serve bar to create all of the possible flavor combinations you can. Multiple locations

World Center for Birds of Prey

Boise Fry Company

Old Chicago

This is a another great stop with a family-friendly atmosphere (i.e. kids can be somewhat loud in here) where the food doesn’t pale in comparison. Drink local brews on tap—we suggest the aura guava & hibiscus sour from Payette Brewing Co.—before diving into the menu. The taproom grub is bar food elevated, and shareable pizzas are perfect for large groups. 350 N. Milwaukee St.

Legends Pub & Grill

A few blocks from our recommended place to stay sits Legends Pub & Grill, a sports bar serving American food and pizzas. The restaurant markets itself as one of Idaho’s largest pubs, with 360 seats. Here, everyone roots for the Broncos of Boise State University. 7609 W. Overland Rd. # 100

Tucano’s Brazilian Grill

Just outside the hotel doors sits this Brazilian grill. The dining experience isn’t quite what you’re used to. Instead of ordering full meals, waiters bring around grilled meats and vegetables for churrasco style dining. The food keeps on coming until you’re full. 1388 S. Entertainment Ave.

PARANORMAL INVESTIGATIONS

If you like ghost stories, visit the penitentiary after dark for a paranormal investigation. From 9:15 PM-2 AM, Big River Paranormal hosts guests. Using special equipment, the experts try to connect with former inmates and guards (18+ only). Or, take advantage of the chance to stay overnight. Sleepless in Stripes II invites adults to enjoy (or not enjoy) a simulated prison experience. In addition to typical inmate activities including recreational time and dinner, there will be a paranormal investigation, as well. This event takes place June 8 from 7 PM - 7 AM.

Discovery Center of Idaho

For less chills and more thrills, head to Boise’s discovery center. The children’s museum encourages scientific exploration over several exhibits and demonstrations. To celebrate the museum’s 30th anniversary this year, a collection featuring 12 exhibits in over 2,000 square feet offers a brand new take on some of the museum’s most popular attractions. 131 W. Myrtle St.

Warhawk Air Museum

The Warhawk Air Museum is also celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Located about 20 miles outside of Boise in Nampa, the museum is home to an impressive collection of both permanent and visiting aircraft, including both the P-40N Warhawk and the P-40E Kittyhawk. 201 Municipal Way, Nampa

Warhawk Air Museum

MUSEUMS

In addition to the museums housed in Julia Davis Park, Boise is home to many others. Here are a few worth mentioning:

Old Idaho Penitentiary

Take a historic walk down memory lane. The old penitentiary is no longer operating, but it is open to guests who want to explore its spooky hallways and gruesome tales of violence and execution. The prison was in working order for more than 100 years, and during that time it became the background for a lot of historic stories. Tour the cell blocks, gallows, common spaces, grounds, and solitary confinement as well as weapons, photographs, and other artifacts housed inside. Most exciting are the stories published throughout the jailhouse, telling of the crimes dangerous criminals were there for, and some of the disturbing tales from inside the penitentiary. 2445 Old Penitentiary Rd.

SNACK ON! PASS THE

CHARCUTERIE  BY NORA HESTON TARTE Charcuterie is having its moment. San Joaquin wineries, breweries, and restaurants are adding or ramping up their cheese board offerings in response to the craze, some with emphasis on supporting other local businesses with the treat. Historically, charcuterie has referred to cold cut meats. Today it references a beautifully arranged board featuring crackers, meats, and cheeses, plus occasional added items such as jams, spreads, fruit, nuts, and more.

The charcuterie board is a coveted experience in the Lodi vineyards. At Oak Farms, for example, boards are only offered with private bookings. Seasonal charcuterie plates loaded with assorted artisan cheeses, salami, fruit, and nuts are provided with a booked tasting, which also features an exclusive line-up of library wines not available with the typical fee. Harney Lane serves cheese boards ($25) to all guests and the focus is on local fare. The standard platter (which

has a gluten-free option as well) is curated with California sundried apricots from Zoria in Brentwood, Lionza cheese from Modesto, roasted almonds from Newman, Columbus salami and artisan croccantini crackers. “Pretty much everything goes well with it,” Kara Salvestrin, Harney Lane’s wine club manager, says of pairing wine with the board. She suggests the Albarino, Old Vine Zin, or The Patriarch specifically, the latter of which is a perfect complement to the salami.

At Mettler Vineyard a vegetarian version of the board is offered. More accurately called a cheese plate—because it doesn’t offer meats—it is loaded with two types of cheese, farm fresh organic Fuji apples, chocolate covered almonds and cashews, and crackers. Uniquely, this board allows customers to customize the experience. At any given time seven cheeses are available to purchase with the board including manchego, sharp cheddar, brie, gouda, and goat cheese. In addition to choosing the cheese, guests can also pick toppings, such as a fruit compote for the brie or a raw honey drizzle for the goat cheese. As far as wines to pair, ask the expert. Robert Scatena, the tasting room manager at Mettler, suggests the Rhone Valley GSM blend with the manche-

go cheese, as they both come from Spain, but the best wine to pair with your board really depends on what you load it with. If you’re indulging in a charcuterie, come with an appetite. These boards may sound like a snack, but they often prove to be a full meal. Robert says he’s seen groups of six fill up on their meat-less offering.

D

RAMIZ HADDAD

TRY THIS!

David stands by every menu item offered on the Fruitful menu, but if you want to try one of his favorites, order up one of these:

Take a trip to Hawaii… without leaving San Joaquin County. Fruitful Juice Co. is the newest juice and smoothie company to hit the streets of Stockton. Opened in March 2019, the husband-wife team behind the brand brings the easy island vibe to Hammer Street. “For some people this is the only trip to Hawaii they’ll get,” Owner Dave Ramirez says. Stop in to sip summer-y concoctions. All smoothies start with a base of your choice and are finished with fruits, vegetables, and other ingredients such as protein powders. Every smoothie and juice is made with health in mind so they aren’t serving up over-sugared beverages that’ll rot kids’ teeth. “A lot of people want to lose weight, gain muscle, and they ask us,” Dave says. “And we do our research and use various ingredients [to help them].” Fruitful Juice Co. came to fruition from a place of faith and strong family roots. Dave lived in Hawaii for nearly five years, which is what inspired much of the shop’s décor and overall feeling, right down to the island music that greets patrons as they walk in. He also wanted the place to be a safe

spot for families and kids to hang out in the neighborhood. Fruitful and Uncle Kioki offer prayers for patrons, and guests can write prayer requests on the chalk wall to be carried out by family and friends of Fruitful and their church, LifeSong. Through God’s favor, Dave 88

connected with other local businesses. For example, locals will recognize the House of Ice Cream flavors sold at Fruitful Juice, plus four exclusive tastes: açaí berry, matcha green tea, avocado, and almond milk vanilla. Guests can also buy fitness-inspired gear and shakers. It’s a little bit of everything all in one place. The name of the business makes sense for more reason than one, and Claudia gets credit for the idea. “God spoke to her and she said ‘Fruitful.’” Dave says. “We went with it and it stands for the fruits of the spirit.” Whether you’re looking for faith, friendship, community, fitness, or a good smoothie, Fruitful Juice is open for you. Owner Mokhtar Amin has goals to serve and nourish the community with his fresh, organic cuisine. Plan on plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options alongside savory kabobi, purple hummus and kobabi curry bowls. Are you hungry yet? Check them out at 14814 Thornton Road in Lodi.

Going for the Gold

Changing of the Guard

Bokisch Vineyards recently announced their Garnacha Blanc received another Gold Medal from the International Grenache Competition. As the only American winery amongst French, Spanish, and Italian wineries—this is big news! It certainly speaks to the quality of wines coming from Bokisch Vineyards and their winemaker Elyse Perry. bokischvineyards.com

New to the Scene Bee Love Cookie Co. recently opened a brick and mortar location in Downtown Lodi. Appropriately titled the Sprinkle Room, this place is off the charts with cuteness. Owner Katie Klouda completely gutted the building at 315 W. Pine Street and adorned the walls with sprinkle wallpaper to boot. The space is available for birthday parties, cookie classes, and cookie pop-ups. Because who doesn’t need a little something sweet in their life?

GOLDEN

STATE

of MIND FRESH FINDS AT POPPY COFFEE

 BY CAITLIN HAMER

/ D RAMIZ HADDAD

Here in California, we’ve got an abundance of fresh foods at our fingertips— including coffee beans. Is it any wonder we like to take advantage of that? “Poppy Coffee is a California café,” says Paige Woodward, who is so dedicated to the golden state aesthetic that she named her café after the state’s vibrant flower. “Most of our stuff is sourced from the state.” The coffee hails from Old Soul Co., a Sacramento based coffee roaster. The smoked bacon that goes into the breakfast burritos comes from Stockton’s own Fat City. The Liege waffles come from a little bit farther – Lake Tahoe.

92

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE MAY 2019

But the syrups that go into the specialty drinks and the salsa that accompanies the burritos are all made in house. “I just like to make things from scratch as much as possible,” explains Paige. “There are less preservatives that way, and it’s a more natural feel.” It’s a very Californian method, but it’s one that yields the most delicious results. And, with a decade in the café industry under her belt, Paige definitely knows what she’s doing. It’s evident as soon as you take a look at the menu. Take, for example, her espresso-based drinks. The Lavanilla Latte is a sweet latte with a hint of lavender, the perfect drink to both perk you up

and mellow you out. The Minty Mocha is another unique and creative beverage, which is made up of California’s own Ghirardelli chocolate, plus house made spearmint syrup. And as we ease into warmer weather, you might want to start switching to chilled drinks. Poppy Coffee serves all their drinks blended, but they also have smoothies and iced teas. Keep an eye out for their upcoming slushy drinks – Paige plans to debut a fresh squeezed lemonade slushy with strawberries, which is exactly the kind of sweet treat that pairs well with

sunny afternoons. Poppy Coffee’s interior is so welcoming that you’ll be tempted to stay there for hours. Luckily, she does serve food – the aforementioned breakfast burritos, as well as sandwiches and paninis. “We do plan on bringing in wine and beer,” adds Paige. “And we want to have open mic night on Fridays, and we’re planning on getting a patio out front.” Though it’s only been open since January, it’s clear that Poppy Coffee is already blooming. And since the Central Valley is considered the food basket of the world, there’s no better place for it.

CHEERS 3 4 BEER! FOUR LOCAL BEER FESTIVALS TO CRASH THIS SUMMER  BY FAITH LEWIS Wine is no longer the only adult beverage of choice in Northern California, and if you’re in the mood to jump on the bandwagon, here are four beer-centric festivals that you just can’t miss this summer.

1

With an anticipated lineup of over fifty breweries showing off more than 100 varieties of beer from across Northern California, attendees can expect big name breweries like Blue Moon and Samuel Adams alongside local crafters such as River Rock Brewery and High Water Brewing. The festival’s motto, “beer is better at the lake,” couldn’t be more accurate for a summer day at Lodi Lake. So grab your sunhat, book a sitter, and get ready for suds at this 21 and older event. Lodi Lake Park.

Boots Beer & BBQ (B3Fest) Saturday, August 31

As a newcomer to the local beer festival scene, Boots Beer & BBQ is ready to take the bull by the horns – and thanks to the mechanical bull rides, you can too. While cowboy hats are optional, a love for chili and country music isn’t. Belly up the to the bar and enjoy your beer to the tune of live country music. Later, catch the BBQ and chili cookoffs and pay a visit to the many food vendors. Weber Point.

Lodi Craft Beer Festival Saturday, June 15

From August 9 to 18, the eighth annual Stockton Beer Week will be brimming with beer-centric events around Stockton. This celebration of craft beer kicks off with the Stockton Brew Fest on August 10 and all week bars, pubs, and restaurants around Stockton will be offering beer and food pairings, unique drafts, trivia nights, and other sudsy specials. Among other official events is the Brews & Shoes Showdown at Lincoln Center, where you can quench your thirst with a tall one after the three-mile run/walk. Grab a pint, support a local business, and find your new favorite beer. Various locations.

Stockton Brew Fest Saturday, August 10 This year’s Stockton Brew Fest is departing from past events with a new outdoor venue and a robust new lineup of entertainment and food options. Held at the Stockton Waterloo Gun & Bocce Club, patrons will find an impressive selection of food trucks, BBQ, live music, games, and – of course – lots of beer. Prep your palate and get ready to taste your way through more than 30 microbrewery beers from across the state or collect the car keys and enjoy discounted entry to the event with a Designated Driver ticket. MOBILE BARTENDING BELLE AVENTURE ROLLS INTO SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY  BY NORA HESTON TARTE

Alyson and Jean Pace like to be the life of the party. Entertainers—and entrepreneurs—at heart, the duo stumbled into the mobile bar business as a way to crash parties for a living. “We loved the idea of being part of people’s big days, whether it's a wedding, retirement party, birthday party, community event, business launch, corporate event, or anything you can dream up,” says Alyson, who owns Belle Aventure Mobile Bar Co. with her husband.

96

|

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE JUNE 2019

Belle Aventure opened in 2018 with a Tiffany blue converted horse trailer complete with twinkling lights that operates as a bar. The vehicle is rented out for events, adding a pop of color and a little class to local parties. “We can support any kind of event but we are seeing the highest demand for weddings and large-scale parties at the moment,” Alyson says. “[Guests] love the idea of having much more than a bartender but an entire experience.” In addition to use of the pop-up bar (with bartending services), guests are granted use of a vintage seating area and lawn games. Soon Belle Aventure will also offer a photo booth housed in a 1952 vintage crown trailer to be ordered as part of a bar package or as a standalone. The duo also recently added a second bar to their fleet. Alyson says, “Our second bar, The Black and Tan, has a sleeker style with black and copper, and external beer taps, allowing it to be

flexible enough to be operated without a bartender.” Alyson and Jean admit they didn’t invent the idea of a mobile bar. In fact, their own model was based on similar businesses in the U.K., but instead of competing with other businesses, the twosome embraces the niche community by focusing on their own unique brand and custom builds. Event packages include full bartending with craft cocktails, beer, wine, and a full bar, or, for venues that require their own bartenders and services, the bars can be rented as a standalone for use by the venue or catering company. Check out the full range of packages online, including dry bar services or the champagne bubbles special, online. Both cars, Blue and Black and Tan, travel 30 miles from the home base in Rocklin with additional miles available to purchase. EXTEND AN INVITE TO YOUR NEXT PARTY: BELLE AVENTURE MOBILE BAR CO. SUMMERTIME STONE FRUIT ORIGINAL RECIPES BY THE FINE FOODIE PHILANTHROPIST / PHOTOS BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER

Is there anything as satisfying as fresh-from-the-farm apricots? These golden eggs of the sun are sweet and aromatic with a soft flesh ripe for snacking. With apricot season approaching, you’ll have more than ample opportunity to get your fill of these sweet morsels. But remember that the dried version is available all year long and offers a tart and chewy version of the vitamin-packed stone fruit. Dried or fresh, apricots are full of nutrient dense minerals like potassium and can be enjoyed in desserts, jams, Mediterranean dishes and so much more. Give these recipes a try and share your pictures using the hashtag #inseason and #sanjoaquinmagazine.
