A BIGGER MISSION
Charlene Smith, 58, was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 31. She underwent a mastectomy, radiation, and chemotherapy to treat the disease. Twenty-seven years later, the director of St. Joseph’s Hospital’s Cancer Institute remains cancer-free. But that hasn’t deterred her from helping other women who are diagnosed, especially women who are diagnosed young, like her. By Nora Heston Tarte

publisher’s note
UPFRONT 209
THE GREATEST WEALTH IS HEALTH Men are real babies when they get sick, and I can say that because I know from personal experience. Throughout time
A woman is like a tea bag—you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water. – Eleanor Roosevelt
we have been labeled as the “stronger” sex, yet my life observations often come up contradictory. The second I or one of my sons start feeling icky—you better believe we’ll provide a non-stop narrative of our aches, pains, and bodily fluids—with miscellaneous complaining/ whining in between—until we’re better. Yet, my mom and wife seem to keep on truckin’ with their head high, no matter how stuffed up it is. Charlene Smith’s story speaks volumes, as she was diagnosed with breast cancer at only 31 years old and fought to ensure she’d be around to raise her children. Sharing her story in our October edition, as the nation celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is nothing short of an honor. She’s overcome incredibly trying times, and then chose to use that experience to fuel a passionate career serving as the director of the Center Institute at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. A survivor heading such a program is sure to provide a personal touch—and it shows through the organization’s unique support groups and offerings. The San Joaquin Magazine team is woman-dominated at 5:1. I wouldn’t have it any other way, after once reading that your staff should be strong in areas where you lack—and lucky for me, I have a staff of extremely organized, multi-tasking machines. (I tell them I don’t expect them to work like robots…but I sometimes I wonder if they’re fully human as they tackle tasks, grow, and thrive in this fast-paced, high-stress, long-hours business.) Needless to say, this edition is a staff favorite. Girl Power is again in full force as the editorial team connects with field experts to report on women’s health hot topics and the magazine partners with female-focused doctors, businesses, and organizations to connect you with the best in the area. Yes, I know holidays are about to be in full swing (can you believe it?!) But, we hope this edition lends a laugh, eases stress, and reminds you to take time for yourself over the next four months of festivities. Because, it’s not a celebration without you!
LAST THOUGHTS
A LITTLE BIT OF THIS, A LITTLE BIT OF THAT
You may notice that this month’s magazine is jam-packed in our upfront section. Truth is, there were too many amazing events hitting our streets to just leave them all in our Agenda. Whether you aim for the stars during Astronomy Week, find out your future with the Long Island Medium, or get your Halloween fanfare in full gear, we’ve got your back for the best events this month.
HOT DIGGITY DOG!
There’s nothing I enjoy more in our pet edition than the many amazing photos we receive from our readers in our Pets on Parade pages. Check out all the hilarious and downright adorable canine and feline companions that strut their stuff for the camera. We received thousands of entries this year, and to see them all, visit SJMag.com
ON A ROLL Happy Reading,

Lettuce be plain, here. There’s no reason to grill us on our next, fooddriven feature when we’ve already squeezed the life out of Mexican, Italian, and Breakfast in this year alone. Who knows? Maybe you’re all a little fried on food. And while we relish the idea of sitting our buns down and writing something that’s more than what meats the eye for November, we don’t want our readers to become sour pickles about how cheesy we can be.

JUSTICE IS LOCAL. YOUR LAWYER SHOULD BE TOO.
Established in 1993, we have been representing San Joaquin Valley community members and their families for more than 20 years in catastrophic injury cases. Our offices are in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, not Los Angeles or San Francisco. We are well versed in the local rules and have a deep knowledge of the arbitrators, judges and court system. This unique knowledge and ability to navigate the local system has produced more successful results for our clients. We intend to maintain our status as the leading personal injury firm in the Central Valley by extending our service capabilities and our local presence to meet our client’s needs.

A BIGGER
MISSION Breast cancer survivor and director of the St. Joseph’s Cancer Institute in Stockton, Charlene Smith uses her personal journey with breast cancer to transform cancer treatment.
BY NORA HESTON TARTE / OPENER PHOTO DAN HOOD
Charlene Smith, 58, was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 31. She underwent a mastectomy, radiation, and chemotherapy to treat the disease. Twenty-seven years later and now the Director at St. Joseph’s Medical Center Cancer Institute, Charlene remains cancer-free. But that hasn’t deterred her from helping other women who are diagnosed, especially women who are diagnosed young, like her. The team at St. Joseph’s has launched several programs to assist breast cancer patients. There are exercise programs including yoga and tai chi, a spa day, networking activities to connect patients, and a navigator program to link patients to helpful services. www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

locals to know
UPFRONT 209
I think having a strong mind and staying positive is very important in survival. – Charlene Smith, Director, St. Joseph’s Cancer Institute in Stockton “We want patients to know that we’re here for them,” Charlene says. “We’re helping somebody everyday and I’ll never want to stop doing that.” When Charlene was diagnosed, she was no stranger to cancer. A healthcare worker since 15, Charlene got her start in x-ray and radiology. Despite her experience, cancer was still not an easy word to hear. “Thirty-one is young,” Charlene says. “I’ve seen breast cancer as young as 26 years old and there’s been cases younger than that… it can happen at anytime to anyone.” Charlene’s cancer journey started when she discovered a lump in her left breast while breast-feeding. She waited several months and eventually saw an OB/GYN when the lump didn’t go away. Charlene said it was small and no one seemed concerned. They sent her for a mammogram just in case. When the results of the mammogram indicated a low likelihood of cancer, Charlene pushed for a biopsy. She’d seen it too many times in her career to let it go. Sure enough, the verdict was cancer, and the mom of three was thrown into her own journey with the disease she’d been treating for eight years. “It was all just kind of surreal,” Charlene explains. “It was definitely an eye opening experience being on the table and not the one treating the patient.” What made the experience most difficult were her three 34

children—ages 12, 4, and 2 at the time of diagnoses. “Even after 26 years, when I meet a mom I still have to take a breath… you can just see it in their face. They’re worried. And not necessarily about themselves.” It’s those faces that keep Charlene moving forward. So long after her own diagnoses, the disease is still part of her. She worried when her first daughter got pregnant that she too would find a lump. Then she insisted they both get tested for the BRCA gene mutation. Fortunately, the genetic testing was normal. “I think it’s really not anything you can explain unless you’re a mom. It’s terrifying because you want to make sure that you’re there to raise your kids.” Charlene feels blessed to have been able to see her children graduate from college, get married, and have beautiful children of their own. Charlene received treatment locally at St. Joseph’s Cancer Institute. She recalls her husband telling her to go to the best treatment facility, not to simply get treated at St. Joseph’s because she worked there. But Charlene knew that St. Joseph’s was the best option. Having local treatment options helped Charlene maintain a normal
life. During her year of treatment, she did not miss any work. Her coworkers were her doctors and her support team. Charlene also met a survivor and volunteer who taught her to treat the whole person, not just the disease. “That kind of got me on a journey to help other people I was treating. We’ve started thinking about how we as a cancer institute can treat the whole person, mind, body, and spirit,” Charlene says. Charlene’s next project is bringing a Survivorship Clinic to St. Joseph’s, a program that would care for survivors for the balance of their life, treating side effects and encouraging follow-up. “It’s hard to let go of it, of the fact that you had cancer and it could come back.” If Charlene could pass any wisdom onto other women, it would be this: be aware of your body. Get a mammogram before it’s recommended (at age 40) if you suspect there is an issue and advocate for yourself. It could save your life. “It’s come so far since I had my treatment. In 2017, there are 15.5 million cancer survivors, by 2040 [medical professionals are] anticipating 26 million.”
As a mom, it’s just that feeling of panic that I need to be here for my kids… I was going to try everything. – Charlene Smith, Director, St. Joseph’s Cancer Institute in Stockton

DINING IN THE DARK
SAN JOAQUIN STEPS INTO THE SHOES OF ITS BLIND COMMUNITY BY COPPER WILLIAMS
It’s a quarter past nine and the power goes out. Your phone light isn’t much use and you’ve burned all your candles down, for fashion, not function. Instinctively, you recall where your furniture is as you cross the living room and into the kitchen. Last night’s meatloaf and veggies are calling your name, and your growling belly can’t wait. You sit down at the table, edge your fingers around your fork, and begin the process of lifting bits and pieces of your meal to your mouth. Tricky, right? This scenario is just another day in the life for many in San Joaquin’s blind community. With varying degrees of sight—or lack thereof—these men and women lead typical lives: Marrying, having children, caring for their homes, and holding full-time jobs. Their days do not revolve around what they see, but rather, what their other senses provide to them. And our community can now experience this heightened state in a seven-course dinner experience like no other. Community Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CCBV) will host their very first Dining in the Dark event on Friday, October 27th at 6 PM. Providing attendees with their very own sleep shades, guests will enjoy a fresh, local meal prepared by Chef Paul Ratto, olive oil and wine tastings, and a raffle and silent auction—completely unable to see. “The most important thing about Dining in the Dark is to temporarily experience being visually impaired or blind for the first time,” explains Hy Cohen, CCBV’s Computer and Assistive Technology Instructor. Diagnosed legally blind as a

baby, Hy had to learn alternative ways to live out a successful and happy life by relying on his senses, and the continuously evolving technology around him. “There are a lot of low and high-tech ways to accommodate a visual impairment. The iPhone and Android-based smart phones alone have allowed those of us who are blind or visually impaired to do things more easily and quickly,” says Hy. “I would honestly say that what is more disabling then my lack of normal eye sight is the attitudes of others.” Hy hopes that the event will be a welcome awakening for those who do not face visual impairment, providing them the chance to “see” the world as those with visual impairment do. As far as advice for the upcoming event? “I would advise our guests to not be afraid to use their fingers to help guide food onto their spoon or fork, especially since they are experiencing having no sight for the first time. Have fun with it because, don’t worry, no one’s looking!” GET YOUR TICKETS: CommunityCenterForTheBlind.org, (209) 466-3836

This year, attendees can look forward to live music, including rock, reggae, and Mexican regional music, a car show, a local talent show, and a craft fair. Children can enjoy mini-carnival rides and a petting zoo. “Traditionally, this event celebrates the cultural diversity of San Joaquin county, with a fun family event,” says Anthony Rivas, a festival coordinator. Tamales will be featured in Tamale Alley, a restaurant showcase alongside Beer Boulevard. “With thousands of community members gathering every year in celebration of family, the Tamale Festival has become a signature event in our community,” says Anthony. The tamale, a steamed dish, is found from Mexico down to South America, as well as in Cuba. Corn dough, masa, is mixed with lard (manteca), butter, or vegetable shortening. Savory tamales are made with bean, pork, chicken, turkey, beef, vegetables, or cheese. Sweet tamales are made with elote (corn), sugar, lime, pumpkin, pineapple, strawberry, or peanuts. Tamales are cooked after being wrapped in corn husks, or banana, plantain, or silver beet leaves. Tamales can be served plain, with meat drippings, or with a red, green, or mole sauce.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2017
In honor of Stockton Arts Week, we reached out to one of our favorite 209 creators, Shelley Castillo, for a brief interview on her incredible work. “Art is something I have always had a strong interest in and passion for,” explains Shelley. Life had a way of keeping her pieces on the back burner, but in the last year, she’s allowed her creative pursuits to bloom, and is an active member in both the 1850 Collective and the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery. “Most of my work to this point has been pen and ink—high contrast black and white illustrations,” says Shelley. “I work fairly small scale and with few tools, usually just a pen and a straight
edge. But recently, I have been challenging myself to try new techniques and mediums, I have started working on a series of Roy Lichtenstein inspired portraits in layered paper, and am learning to paint with acrylic.” Shelley feels she’s yet to capture her own personal style, but admits that the process of finding it is both fluid and organic. “…Looking at the work of any artist, you will see the progression and growth in their style over time.” And for Shelley, there’s a magic behind putting pen to paper. “Creating a piece of art that reflects your original ideas and emotions is a wonderful feeling. I take time to review and evaluate every piece that I feel I got “right”. I focus on those key elements and characteristics to carry into the next piece.”

WINTER IS HEATING UP
STOCKTON HEAT PREPS FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON BY PAIGE SMITH While locals are indulging in fall favorites like PSL, haunted houses, and pumpkin patches, the Stockton Heat is gearing up for another season. With the
first game kicking off in Stockton on October 6, the team and staff are looking to make sure that fans create lasting memories. “Over the past six months we have invested a lot of time and resources in improving the fan experience—first at our home games, but also at every other event we hold, and in the community to engage new fans,” Brain Petroverk, CEO of Stockton Heat says. The fun is not only for the fans though, the team is ready for new goals. Stockton Heat Head Coach, Ryan Huska, explains that he wants the team and each individual player to challenge and better themselves. “A lot of times when you see guys come back at the end of their summer, starting

a new year, you want to see how they’ve developed. Maybe they got stronger, got a little quicker—or see who’s going to take on more of a leadership role,” Coach Huska explains. “That’s always the thing we want to see early on from our guys—the progress they’ve made and how they’ll play this season.” Last season the team made large strides by earning a playoff berth for the first time and played an exciting series against the San Jose Barracuda. This year, the team has even more speed on their side. “Much like years past, we’re going to be a faster team, maybe even the fastest we’ve had!” Coach Huska enthuses. “We feel we have a lot of forwards who can skate and because of that, we’ll be able to play a high-pressure game that is exciting and entertaining to watch.” To help bring out new and continued fans to the arena for games, the team has made many improvements including the Heat365 Membership program. The program is set
to include additional premium seating options with rink-side suites, group experiences, and more. Fans can look forward to popular theme nights, including Teddy Bear Toss and Star Wars Night. Beat the cold winter weather on December 31, and come to their new event, a Kids New Years’ experience that will include indoor fireworks! “We’re putting fans first, making a renewed commitment to our community, working to bring more people together at the Stockton Arena to experience the world class quality of the American Hockey League in a fun, safe, clean atmosphere, at an affordable price,” Brian explains. “We’re looking forward to delivering upon that promise this season... and we’re fired up to do so!” FOR MORE INFORMATION: (209) 373-1500, StocktonHeat.com

The Stockton Delta Humane Society & SPCA has been serving the San Joaquin County and surrounding communities since 1966. We are a private, 501(c)(3) non-profit charity that operates strictly on public donations, supported by people and businesses who care about the welfare of animals. The Delta Humane Society & SPCA is a true no-kill animal shelter. We provide shelter, medical care and adoption services to abandoned, lost and misplaced pets. Each animal that comes into our shelter is given vaccinations and placed under surveillance until it is determined that the animal is ready to go home with a loving new owner. Every animal has been spayed or neutered and microchipped before adoption.

DEPRESSION & ANXIETY BY JENNIFER MOULAISON
Though Lucille Ball might have you think that listlessness and general despondence can be solved with a spoonful of Vitameatavegamin, depression and anxiety are serious and surprisingly common mood disorders suffered by millions of women in the U.S. alone. According to Mary Raymond, a Family Nurse Practitioner at Dameron Hospital’s Ambulatory Care Center, the Center for Disease Control reports 20% of women will experience depression in their lifetime and have higher rates than men across all age groups. What’s more surprising is Raymond has observed in her practice many women don’t recognize their condition, even though they are experiencing many of the typical symptoms of depression. So how do women in today’s chaotic times determine whether they’ve simply had a rough day (or week, or month) or if they’re experiencing clinical depression? Some things to look out for are no longer enjoying things you once did, trouble sleeping, fatigue, increased appetite or loss of enjoy78

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2017
ment for food, weight changes and even the inability to make simple decisions. Also, depression sufferers might experience feelings of guilt or lack of self-confidence. The most severe symptoms are, of course, thoughts of suicide or desire to inflict self-pain. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to diagnose depression because patients with these complaints frequently seek treatment for specific symptoms without considering the underlying cause. What commonly goes unnoticed are more serious causes of depression like relationship issues, abuse, stress, and financial worries. In these situations, patients are reluctant to share the circumstances that might be playing a role in their depression, making it difficult to treat. In cases where depression is diagnosed, there are increasingly wide and varied forms of effective treatment. The combination of medication and counseling is the best approach, according to Raymond, and physical exercise like yoga and relaxation techniques are valuable adjuncts to treatment. And while benzodiazepines or tranquilizers offer immediate relief from symptoms,
these are highly habit-forming and are typically only recommended for short-term use. Raymond also explains another resource not enough people utilize is support from their employer. Many employers offer confidential employee assistance programs, which are useful in coping with life challenges. Fortunately for many of us who are already suffering from or susceptible to depression and anxiety, there are qualified professionals like Mary Raymond, NP, equipped and eager to help. “I enjoy my practice because it gives me the opportunity to provide women with much-needed affirmation and tools to empower them,” says Raymond. “But it’s important to understand that medication alone is rarely enough and will often fail when not used in conjunction with other forms of treatment. Having an outsider provide thoughtful, active listening, moral support and being able to ventilate has therapeutic value to the patient. But ultimately, it’s up to the patient to seek help and make a change.”

There’s one word we all hope to never hear from our doctor and that’s “cancer.” While keeping away from the doctor’s office altogether can help avoid hearing that ominous term, it ultimately only postpones and exacerbates any potential problems that could have been treated before becoming serious. According to Dr. Anita Heart, a family practice physician with Dignity Health Medical Group Stockton, typically when someone hears the term “abnormal pap” the first thing they assume is cancer. Fortunately, most abnormal paps are due to simple, easily treated infections. Left untreated, those could develop into more serious conditions. In fact, having a pap examination come back with abnormal results is actually a highly common occurrence but these screenings continue to 80

be underperformed and only about 69% of women over the age of 18 have had a pap in the last 3 years according to the Center for Disease Control. This statistic is even lower for mammograms with only 65.3% of women over 40 having had an exam within the past 2 years. Early detection still remains the best preventative medicine for breast and gynecological cancer. In fact, breast cancer, in most cases, when found at stages 0-2 have between 100% and 93% survival rate according to the American Cancer Society. Cancer detected in later stages is more likely to spread and metastasize, decreasing likelihood for survival to about 22%. In addition to early and often examinations and tests with your gynecologist, there are ways to help with early detection in the comfort of your own home. Dr. Heart ex-

plains it’s important to “be an advocate for your own health and in addition to keeping up with screenings, it’s important for women to know their bodies and be aware of any changes that could signal something isn’t right.” Genetic research is equally important as family histories can provide insight for your physician as to your likelihood to develop issues that could potentially lead to a cancer diagnosis. Unfortunately, there’s no guaranteed method for preventing gynecologic cancer. But, according to Dr. Heart, committing to routine examinations, paps and mammograms, as well as knowing your family history, protecting yourself from HPV and making healthy lifestyle choices can dramatically reduce your risk.

MOOD SWINGS, AND WEIGHT GAIN—OH MY! BY JENNIFER MOULAISON
Sure, mood swings, weight gain, fatigue, skin issues, and even depression and anxiety sound like typical hormonal symptoms the average, healthy woman experiences from time to time— but are they signs of something more? According to the Women’s Health Network, seemingly typical symptoms could potentially be caused by a more serious, and alltoo-often ignored, hormonal imbalance issue. Yes, the hormonal imbalances you’re experiencing could be caused by PMS, pregnancy, or even menopause, but for many women there can be underlying medical concerns. Hypothyroidism, or a condition when the thyroid gland becomes overactive, for example, causes hormonal changes like insomnia, moodiness, panic attacks, and depression. Adrenal disorders, which are imbalances in the body’s stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol, can also cause symptoms of insomnia, anxiety, and depression. Hormonal imbalances can also be caused by blood sugar imbalances, progesterone deficiencies, and even a condition known as Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), in which cysts develop on the ovaries. Unfortunately, because the symptoms for hormonal imbalances straddle the symptoms of clinical depression and other mental disorders, many physicians are quick to prescribe antidepressants to patients with these complaints 82
|
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2017
and neglect to investigate underlying causes. So how do you know if you have a hormonal imbalance? First, listen to your body. Pay attention to the symptoms you’re experiencing and keep track of their frequency and severity. If you find your symptoms are increasing, even by a small margin, seek help from your physician but be specific as to what you’re experiencing and don’t hesitate to ask for hormone testing. Saliva, blood tests, and hair follicle tests exist to help determine whether hormone imbalance is the cause of persistent symptoms. And if it is the culprit, there are many effective treatments that can help restore balance. Most doctors treat imbalances with hormone replacement therapy. Biodentical hormones, which are natural and biochemically identical to human hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, and even testosterone, can be highly effective for women. Synthetic hormones created by pharmaceutical companies intended to mimic natural hormones are another option. However, they pose a slightly higher risk and can have adverse effects but are sometimes necessary in severe cases. Ultimately, no one knows you better than you and most of us know when something just isn’t quite right. Don’t let the messages your body is sending go unnoticed, and inform your physician of what you’re experiencing as early as possible to bring balance.

TRENDS F E ATU R E S
t a BIRTH 40 BY NORA HESTON TARTE
More women over 40 are having babies, letting the biological clock tick a bit longer than ever before. With medical intervention, it’s not uncommon to have a healthy pregnancy, delivery, and recovery after 40, however, it’s not the same as doing it at 20 or 30 either. It’s important to know what to expect. Getting pregnant is sometimes the biggest hurdle. Fertility falls drastically after age 40. By age 43, only 10 percent of woman treated for infertility are likely to get pregnant using their own eggs. At age 44, it plummets to 1.6 percent. Once pregnant, rates of miscarriage are higher, too. If a pregnancy remains viable, chromosomal disorders become more common, as does Down Syndrome and the possibility of giving birth to multiples (which may be a plus for those who desire twins). There is also a higher rate of complications including gestational diabetes and preeclampsia. “Women at age 40 generally have more co-morbidities, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, which pose significant risks for the
health of the pregnancy,” says Eugenia Hurlbut, D.O. with Gill OB/GYN Medical Group, Inc. “In order to reduce these risks, the woman should try to maintain a normal weight with a well-balanced diet, regular daily exercise, and have all pre-existing conditions well-controlled.” Women over 40 are at higher risk for developing these conditions during pregnancy even if they didn’t have them before. Despite health concerns, a 2016 study found that for the first time in 70 years more women over 40 are having babies than those under 20. And some studies suggest babies born to older mothers are happier and healthier in the long run. Having a baby at 40 is, in some ways, easier when the rising cost of raising a family and the portion of women enjoying careers before settling down are factored in. Attentive medical care can sideline complications for women over 40 with proper management of preexisting conditions and additional testing. While not all outcomes can be changed, knowledge breeds power.
Older women may have a harder time physically with the effects pregnancy has on the body and the ability to ‘bounce back.’ Recovery after birth may be more difficult and take more time, – Eugenia Hurlbut, D.O. with Gill OB/GYN Medical Group, Inc.

BY NORA HESTON TARTE
MENOPAUSE
2017 WOMEN'S
So, it’s started. You’re experi-
encing hot flashes, you’re tired all the time, your breasts are tender and you’ve likely felt at least one of several other uncomfortable symptoms, including decreased libido, irregular periods, urine leakage, and vaginal dryness. It’s called perimenopause and it’s the precursor to menopause. Though menopause typically strikes around age 50, perimenopause starts two to ten years prior and comes with an onslaught of symptoms. From there, menopause occurs. Many of the symptoms are the same, but those private summers bring a few new ones, as well. Luckily, relief exists. “Menopause can cause many uncomfortable symptoms, but working closely with your doctor can help treat those symptoms so you can stay active and strong,” says Dr. Anita Heart, a family practice physician with Dignity Health Medical Group Stockton. Many women who experience menopause report difficulty sleeping, mood changes, and osteoporosis as side effects. While 45 to 55 is the average age for menopause to begin, early menopause can start in a woman’s 30s. Other women won’t experience menopause until age 60. Genetics may play a role. While early menopause can be caused by premature ovarian failure, damage to the ovaries by chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments, or surgical removal of the ovaries, if there isn’t a clear reason for it, you can likely blame genetics. Studies show that the age your mother began menopause may be the best indicator as to when you, too, will begin. In an effort to be cute, many people refer to menopause as “the change,” but there’s nothing cute about it. Instead of groaning and moaning about the side effects, take action. 86
|
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2017
Simple changes to diet can make a big difference. Optimal nutrition reduces side effects, herbal remedies such as adaptogens balance hormones, and exercise reduces fat while also keeping estrogen and progesterone ratios in good range. Reducing stress and remaining cognizant of your emotions and their effect on the body can also help. With no cure for menopause, symptomatic relief is the goal. Vaginal dryness is treated with topical lubricants or estrogens. Medications can reduce the severity and frequency of hot flashes and in spe-
cial circumstances oral hormone therapy may be prescribed. Relaxation techniques such as meditation are good for mood and stress-management, dietary supplements boost overall health, and sleep aids can be used to combat insomnia. “There are many ways to manage symptoms if you are experiencing any,” Dr. Anita Heart says. “Talk to your doctor about simple lifestyle changes that may help your symptoms, and also know that some symptoms may go away on their own.”

DIRTY TALK
Sometimes not-so-glamorous questions or concerns regarding your health surface. Find a doctor whose personality makes you feel comfortable, heard, and informed. This will help combat urges to “put it off” when it comes to your health.
FIND A DOCTOR
Choosing a primary care physician (PCP) is an important first step in ensuring your health care program works for you. Your PCP will serve as ‘home base’ for you and your family’s medical needs— as they conduct wellness visits and routine tests, care for non-emergency illnesses, and serve as your main source for any questions you may have about your health. Take time to explore provider options and find the right doctor for you and your family.
FOCUS ON YOUR NEEDS
Many primary care physicians have different focuses, like pediatrics, internal medicine, or family practice. Pediatricians focus on children’s health, and care for infants through adolescents; Family Practice specialists care for patients ranging from young children to the elderly, and 88

treat a wide range of illnesses and conditions; Internal Medicine specialists are best suited for adults and like Family Practice specialists, they specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of disease and chronic illness.
CUSTOM & CONVENIENT
Visiting the doctor can seem inconvenient in today’s busy world—maybe that’s why so many people put off preventative care. But, the time saved is never worth the price paid. Support your wellness and make annual visits as easy as possible by choosing a PCP that practices close to home. And for convenience, it might be helpful to find a doctor’s office that gives you the option to schedule an appointment and check results online or even communicate with your doctor by email. If English is a second language for you or a

BY JENNIFER MOULAISON
We’ve all done it. Glanced too quickly at mirror or caught our reflection and thought, “Who on earth is that?” Most of us would do just about anything to bring back that resilient, healthy glow of our youth—including go under the knife. Fortunately for women throughout the Central Valley, extreme measures like surgery may no longer be necessary. Enter Dr. Gerald Bock of California Skin and Laser Center, a fellow with the American Academy of Dermatology (among many other prestigious titles in his field) and has been practicing in the Central Valley for over four decades. Dr. Bock has continuously worked to offer safer, more effective and affordable cosmetic treatments to his patients. His tips for helping prevent premature aging of the skin are refreshingly straightforward:
become permanent. By the early thirties women should consult with a dermatologist to develop a plan for their skin’s health and long-term resilience.
1
4
Sunscreen is of the utmost importance. In fact, Dr. Bock explains if you don’t use sunscreen; don’t even bother with any other preventative methods because nothing is as directly correlated to aging skin as sun damage.
2
Some topical treatments, particularly Retin-A, which is a vitamin that helps the skin renew itself, can be effective but only marginally and are subject to continued use.
3
Equally important to sun protection, Dr. Bock encourages his patients to seek the help of their dermatologist early on in order to treat and prevent wrinkles and skin aging before it
90
|
As for hydration and sleep routines, these actually have a minimal effect on the skin’s appearance. Though sunscreen and topical treatments help, Dr. Bock explains the only methods proven to significantly renew skin is using a variety of techniques to produce controlled skin damage, causing the cells to renew themselves and behave and look younger. Surgical intervention can also correct many of the signs of aging. In modern times people are less interested in having larger surgeries with more down time and more potential side effects. Fortunately, Dr. Bock has brought to his practice a new, cutting edge procedure called J-Plasty. This is a minimally invasive procedure that uses ionized energy to create a helium-based plasma that’s cooler than a typical laser and shrinks and tightens the skin much more effectively than any other minimally invasive procedure. This all sounds great and very technical but what about the results?
SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2017
Patients of J-Plasty enjoy about half the recovery time and about 60% of the result of a traditional face-lift and are projected to have the same duration of results at about 5-10 years— although this can’t be confirmed, as J-Plasty has only been around for about a year. Even more exciting, this procedure can be performed just about anywhere on the body, from the face and neck to that dreaded sagging under the arms and even on the legs and abdomen. California Skin and Laser Center is the only office in the Central Valley to offer this unique service and Dr. Bock is proud to offer the latest in skin care advancements to his patients with offices in Stockton, Lodi, and Elk Grove.

ENSURE KNEE
JOINT HEALTH BY JENNIFER MOULAISON
Though the medical world continues to make strides in advancing treatments and surgeries that relieve ailments like knee pain caused by arthritis, ultimately, the best practice for ensuring your knees’ health is awareness and prevention. According to Dr. Kevin Mikaelian, Orthopedic Surgeon and Rapid Strides Medical Director at Dameron Hospital in Stockton, we put two to three times our own body weight directly on our knees when walking. This is why it’s little wonder a staggering 25 percent of individuals over 55 years old will suffer from arthritic knee pain in their lifetime. About half of that 25 percent will eventually require surgical intervention and undergo a knee replacement. To ensure you’re doing right by your knees, Dr. Mikaelian suggests the following steps. DO YOUR RESEARCH: There’s a strong correlation between a patient’s genetic history and predisposition 92

for knee joint issues. Knowing whether your parents or grandparents have had knee problems, and to what extent, can help gauge the prognosis for severity in your own case. PROTECT YOUR KNEES EARLY ON: Avoid high-impact activities like running, jumping and climbing, and stick to lower impact alternatives like swimming and cycling. BE WEIGHT CONSCIOUS: Patients who are significantly overweight put more stress on their joints and are more likely to suffer from knee pain. Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and low-impact exercise can increase knee health considerably and help avoid the need for surgical intervention. SEEK HELP: Often times, patients ignore the problem and don’t inform their doctor of knee pain until well after treatment could have begun. If you’re experiencing knee pain more than
two to three days per week it’s time to consult with your physician. The earlier treatments like anti-inflammatories and physical therapy begin, the greater chance you can avoid needing knee replacement later. Fortunately, for those whose preventative actions weren’t enough, and surgery becomes necessary, Dameron Hospital offers the cutting-edge Rapid Strides Accelerated Recovery© Knee Replacement Program. The knee replacement procedure offered at Dameron is minimally invasive and cuts recovery time in half compared to traditional surgery. Plus, because Dameron has brought this innovative rapid recovery procedure to San Joaquin Valley, patients no longer have to travel outside of their community to receive the care they need. CEO and President of Dameron Hospital, Lorraine P. Auerbach, believes the community deserves these types of exceptional services like the Rapid Strides program, and is committed to bringing more like it to the Central Valley.

LOVE YOUR EYES Do your eyes look tired and irritated? Are they constantly tearing up or turning red? Dry eye is a condition that affects more than 3 million in the U.S., either from underproduction of tears or the production of the “sick” tears (tears that evaporate too quickly and lack proteins and protective components). Tearing, scratchiness, itching, redness, and blurred vision characterize both conditions. Most patients with chronic dry eye are women. Those who wear contacts, smoke tobacco, work in a setting that requires prolonged staring such as at a computer, or are post-menopausal, are at increased risk for chronic dry eye. In San Joaquin County, where air pollution, allergies, and dry air are all common, symptoms are exacerbated. Follow these simple steps to get your eyes feeling and looking great again:
STOP UNHEALTHY BEHAVIORS
If bad habits are causing dry eye, stop them. Give up tobacco, spend less time looking at computer screens, limit use of contact lenses, etc. “Don’t overuse Visine or other drops ‘that get the red out,’” advises Kimberly Cockerham, MD at Central Valley 94

Eye. “They make things worse if used for more than a couple of days.” It’s also important to avoid rubbing irritated eyes. This pushes the allergens and dust on eyelashes into the eyes, and if the ocular surface has been damaged, it can lead to infection.
PICK UP HEALTHY HABITS
Increasing flax seed and fish oil in your diet, either through supplements or foods you eat, can improve moderate to severe symptoms of dry eye. Artificial tears (best without preservatives in single use vials) are available over the counter. Ask your eye doctor if you are a candidate for prescriptive help. Restasis and/or Xiidra eye drops can be very helpful in managing your symptoms but may be expensive or not covered at all by your insurance.
damaged. This creates the uncomfortable symptoms associated with chronic dry eye.
RECEIVE IPL TREATMENTS
Instead of reaching for another bottle of artificial tears, get to the root of chronic dry eye. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments help to reduce the inflammation that causes chronic dry eye, dramatically reducing symptoms of tearing and irritation. If your skin is red or has visible vessels due to Rosacea, you will notice an improvement in your skin too. Dr. Kimberly Cockerham—a laser expert with two decades of experience—recommends starting with a series of three treatments to stop the cell to cell signals that promote ongoing inflammation. In some cases, insurance will cover IPL. Call the office today to get those eyes you love looking and feeling better.
UNDERSTAND THE IMPLICATIONS
A healthy tear film allows you to see clearly by providing a smooth surface to see through. Healthy tears also provide surface comfort and protect against infections and minimize the effects of allergens. When the ocular surface tissue is altered, lubrication is compromised and the ocular surface is

Knowledge is power. The first step to getting proper treatment for gynecological cancers is understanding your diagnosis. “Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecologic malignancy,” explains Dr. P. Gill, OBGYN at Gill Obstetrics & Gynecology Medical Group, Inc. “With an estimated 37,000 new cases last year in United States, it is the fourth most common malignancy among women. Seventy-five percent of cases occur in the postmenopausal years.” Ovarian cancer is less common than endometrial cancer, but is often a more serious diagnosis. “More women die of ovarian cancer than all other forms of gynecological cancers combined,” Dr. Gill says. “Unlike endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer is often not detected until it has already spread to other parts of the body.” If you receive an endometrial cancer diagnosis rest assured that most women with this type of cancer undergo a hysterectomy, removal of ovaries and of lymph nodes, and in most cases if the cancer has not spread, no other treatment is needed. “Most women with endometrial cancer will be cured if they receive appropriate treatment,” she says. However, if the cancer has spread, additional radiation treatment may be needed. Like endometrial cancer, surgery is almost always the first step for treatment of ovarian cancer, as well. “For most women this will include a hysterectomy with removal of ovaries, lymph nodes, and omentum (a pad of fat cells that covers the stomach and intestines),” Dr. Gill
says. Some early ovarian cancers require only surgery for treatment but the majority of women will need chemotherapy based on the type and extent of spread of the ovarian cancer.” Sometimes the statistics help put a patient’s mind at ease, others may find them counterproductive. “Early ovarian cancer without spread at the time of diagnosis can be ‘cured’ in up to 95 percent of women. Unfortunately 70 percent of ovarian cancers are detected after spread has occurred. For these women, treatment has 80 percent chance of remission.” When the disease is advanced relapse is common from months to years after treatment, and while these instances are treatable, there is no cure for relapsed ovarian cancer. If you experience irregular bleeding or

MAINTAIN
HEART HEALTH THROUGH EXERCISE BY NORA HESTON TARTE
Many women exercise to lose weight, but exercise is good for more than outer appearance; exercise is beneficial to the whole body. “Exercise is a magical elixir; it helps prevent diabetes, heart attack, and depression, and it slows down aging,” says Dr. Ramin Manshadi of Manshadi Heart Institute in Stockton and President elect for California Chapter of American College of Cardiology. “Our genetic makeup has been made to move and not to live sedentary.” If you aren’t an avid exerciser already, Dr. Manshadi rec98

ommends starting a routine with weekly doses of cardio to jumpstart, or maintain, heart health. Any athlete over the age of 35 should get a pre-participation screening before diving in to an intense exercise regimen. If an athlete has an underlying heart condition or if they abuse energy drinks, they could be at increased risk for heart attack even under the age of 35. So how do you start exercising without putting your body in harms way? “Moderation is the key in exercise,” Dr. Manshadi says. Don’t overdo it, and always take a new exercise slow. Muscles need to build and that will take time. Once you’ve been doing the same movements for several weeks or even months, muscle memory kicks in. Your body needs time to adjust, but once it’s warmed up, you can trust it to thrive under the new routine. “Three miles a day for at least five days a week and getting your heart rate to at least 85 percent of your predicted maximum heart rate is optimum for heart health,” Dr. Manshadi says. If you’re obese, exercise becomes even more important. While everyone should exercise regularly, those who are significantly overweight are at greater risk for heart attack, even if lipids, sugars, and blood pressure all test normal. So while exercise isn’t only for weight loss, it’s certainly an important component for those who are carrying around more than a few extra pounds. If you’ve ever desired to turn back the clock and regain the health you enjoyed in years past, exercise is the way to do it. Wrinkle creams and plastic surgery may help women look younger, but exercise makes the body more youthful. “People that exercise regularly can biologically slow aging quite significantly,” Dr. Manshadi says.

Stretching of the vaginal canal and the labia majora postpartum can lead to a loose feeling, one that causes both incontinence and decreased arousal. Some women even notice a difference in the appearance postpartum. “I contemplated having surgery over and over for my incontinence but I’m really glad I waited,” says Michelle, a customer at New Body MD in Stockton. “Thermiva not only helped my incontinence but it also brought back my youthful appearance!” Michelle underwent a noninvasive, nonsurgical procedure called Thermiva. The goal was to help her incontinence, but Michelle experienced other positive side effects. The applications use radiofrequency energy to gently heat tissue and alter the vaginal anatomy. The result is tighter skin, which helps incontinence, a plumper, younger look, and better lubrication allowing for increased arousal and sensations during sex. “After my first treatment, my husband offered to pay for the next two treatments,” says Ariel, another New Body customer. The laser treatments are FDA approved, and the staff at New Body recommends three treatments four weeks apart for best results. Touchups are often recommended in two protocols—one every 12 months, or one every three. “I have been performing this treatment for a little over a year now and the results are phenomenal,” says Christina
Girley, a practitioner at New Body MD. “It still amazes me that there is this little device that can do so much! I have patients calling and thanking me for the results that they have gotten.” Christina says women are opting for the laser treatments instead of surgical procedures that require significant downtime and increased risks. With Thermiva, the application is easier, and woman can get back to their regular activity the second they walk out of their appointment—that includes exercise and sex. The vaginal rejuvenation treatment is so popular that celebrities like Khloe Kardashian are singing its praises in the media. “After 35 years of marriage and two children, Thermiva has helped us regain our teenage flame,” says Joe, whose wife had the procedure done at New Body. The laser treatments are FDA approved, and the staff at New Body recommends three treatments four weeks apart for best results. Touchups are often recommended in two protocols—two treatments annually 6 months apart at a minimum one treatment a year.

MANAGEMENT
SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL SECTION
Diabetes is a very common word today, as many are afflicted by this disease. While certain causes have been discovered, there are currently no medical cures for diabetes, only management options. Not all management programs are ideal for all people and, if not treated properly, diabetes can be fatal. So, it’s important to know that San Joaquin General Hospital and County Clinics are here to help local residents with effective diabetes management. Diabetes is a metabolic disease caused by the body either not producing enough insulin or by the body’s lack of ability to properly respond to insulin. There are two main types of diabetes. Their their symptoms are similar but the management programs are often different. Type 1 diabetes is common among younger adults. Generally, these individuals are born with it or develop diabetes early in adulthood. Type 1 diabetes patients do not create enough insulin to dissolve the glucose that enters the blood stream. For these patients, the common treatment is insulin injections. This type of diabetes is relatively rare making up only about 10% of the diabetic population. Type 2 diabetes is more common, making up 90% of cases of diabetes locally. Patients with type two diabetes often have developed an intolerance to the way insulin is produced and functions within the body. In some cases, those affected with this type may also not be producing enough insulin for their body. For these people diet, exercise, and weight loss may help to control their diabetes. Gestational Diabetes occurs in pregnant women, usually late in the pregnancy. Hormone levels and the additional stress of internal child development can cause women to not produce enough insulin to keep their blood sugar levels down. Often this can be managed by

diet. The good news is that gestational diabetes will cure itself once the baby’s born and the mother’s hormone levels return to normal.
TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR DIABETES:
So exactly what is diabetes? It is a metabolic disorder that keeps the body from using insulin to break down glucose within the blood stream. Without glucose breakdown, it can’t enter cells to help make fuel for our bodies. There is no cure for diabetes, only professional management. If you have type two diabetes you may be able to manage it with diet and exercise. San Joaquin General Hospital and San Joaquin county clinics are here to assist local County residents with dependable diabetes care and management. The Hospital and Clinics have a full staff of knowledgeable diabetes care professionals including physicians, nurses and dietitians. They have certified diabetes educators that conduct weekly diabetes classes to assist patients manage diabetes correctly. Classes are every Friday both morning and afternoon. The certified instructors offer medication management and personal one-on-one consulting. The diabetes management classes are offered in both Spanish and English. While the stereotypical left arm or jaw pain can happen to both men and women, many women experiencing a heart attack may instead feel a sudden shortness of breath while performing simple tasks like walking through a parking lot or to the mailbox. Other heart attack signs in women could be a “squeezing” feeling in the chest or breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. Especially in combinations, these are reasons to head straight to the ER. Sure, it could be allergies, asthma, or an infection—but in any case, your breathing supports blood flow to your heart and an issue can prove problematic.
SUDDEN CONFUSION OR DISORIENTATION
Don’t take a chance on neurological symptoms like sudden confusion, unusual behavior, severe headaches, difficulty speaking or seeing, or a change in your mental status. Such symptoms could be signaling an embolism or aneurysm. The Brain Aneurysm Foundation reports that women are more likely than men to develop a brain aneurysm at a ratio of 3:2, or to suffer a subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Arm weakness? Speech difficulties? Time to call 9-1-1!) If you’re experiencing one or more of these symptoms, immediately call emergency services. Paramedics have the resources and ability to quickly administer tests, medicines, and treatments crucial to proper heart attack or stroke care, while en route to the hospital. St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton is a Primary Stroke Center and Heart Attack Receiving Center for the county. The nationally recognized Heart & Vascular Institute offers a full range of heart services, providing top quality care close to home.
SEVERE ABDOMINAL PAIN
As women, we have a high tolerance for abdominal pain, thanks to Aunt Flo. Though we tough out tummy aches each month—severe or persistent issues that last more than 24 hours call for emergency care. Ovarian cysts can cause sensations and pain similar to the last time you ate questionable fish at that one taco truck—but if you also experience pain consistent on one side, or pain that moves to your back and down your leg head to the ER. We all know that hospital ERs are busy places and the idea of being in a waiting room feeling miserable or in pain could be enough to make you consider suffering it out at home—don’t! If it’s critical, get to the ER quick or call 9-1-1. For non-emergencies, St. Joseph’s Medical Center offers an online ER waiting service that allows you to select an arrival time and wait at home.

KNOW WHEN
TO GO TO URGENT CARE
SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL SECTION
BY JENNIFER MOULAISON
Let’s face it… emergencies don’t always happen during regular business hours. Stockton Urgent Care Medical Clinic (SUCMC) has been serving the Stockton community for over 30 years by providing a caring family practice and a fully functional Urgent Care that is open seven days a week with a ‘no appointment necessary’ policy and extended business hours. So what are some of the do’s and don’ts for seeking the right level of medical attention?
1.
Urgent Care scenarios are medical ailments that are serious enough to be treated urgently, but do not require the advanced medical interventions that an Emergency Room can provide. Some of these medical scenarios are: Cuts and lacerations requiring stitches, fever, Flu, skin rashes or infections, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, sprains and muscle strains, and urinary tract infections. All these and more can be treated at SUCMC.
2.
In an emergency scenario such as a possible Heart Attack or Stroke, the best advice is ‘when in doubt…call 9-1-1’. Urgent Care as a medical entity is unique in that it is a stepping point to the Emergency Room. It is here that the ‘not serious enough for the ER’ situation is resolved. At Stockton Urgent Care Medical Clinic, our physician can assess the situation and stabilize the patient who then may be transferred to the Emergency Room for more advanced medical treatment if needed.
3.
SUCMC as a Family Practice also treats chronic medical conditions such as Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, and Thyroid problems as well as performing yearly physicals, DOT physicals, and sport physicals. These types of visits are best done earlier in the day rather than the last thirty minutes prior to closing. It is best to save this time for true emergencies. Ultimately, Stockton Urgent Care Medical Clinic is here to provide the community with as much medical support as it can, before its members must seek additional care found at hospitals.

EYEWEAR FOR YOU BY JENNIFER MOULAISON
SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL SECTION
Whether you have a light prescription for reading the Sunday paper or a highly nearsighted prescription for driving, finding the ideal pair of eyewear can be an arduous task. Be sure you’re prepared with the right information to make choosing the most noticeable accessory you’ll wear feel effortless. Know your insurance coverage: According to Dr. Devinder Grewal of Zeiter Eye Medical Group, “Most Vision Plans will cover annual eye exams but not necessarily cover glasses every year. In addition, the majority of insurance plans will cover either glasses or contact lenses, but not both.” Zeiter Eye’s staff can help you decide how to maximize your insurance coverage. Your glasses prescription can influence the way you choose frames: As Dr. Grewal explains, “When picking out multifocal glasses it’s important to have frames that will accommodate your visual needs for both distance and near vision.” Consider your intended use for your glasses: If you’re using your prescription only when reading or using the computer, it’s helpful to keep in mind a short-style frame to easily see over the top for distance vision. Investing in multiple frames can pay off: If your vision needs correction for distance, sunglasses can be a wise addition to everyday frames. “When picking out sunglasses, large frames are not only in style but will also give your eyes and eyelid skin maximum UV protection,” says Dr. Grewal. Your face shape, eye color and overall desired aesthetics play a role in choosing frames as well. According to Dr. Grewal, “When picking out a particular style of glasses one needs to make sure the frame complements the shape of the face and feels comfortable.” Softer curved faces, like oval and round, should seek angular glasses 112

with sharp, clean lines that are proportional to the face. Square faces? You guessed it—these will benefit most from softer round and oval eyewear styles. For heartshaped faces, oval and round frames will work but focus on finding frames that sit slightly wider than your forehead for visual balance. So what about eyewear trends? We’re seeing a rise in favor for softer frames made of lighter acetate (slightly translucent synthetic material). These can come in an array of trendy hues from rich greens to bold blues, which are taking the place of the stark black tones that used to be more popular. Looking for something unique in
terms of material? A mix of acetate and metal frames has a subtle, vintage feel and can offer a less heavy look on the face while still making a bold impact.

the START MORNING RIGHT
SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL SECTION
BY NORA HESTON TARTE
A well-balanced meal is the best way to start your morning. While the habit of eating breakfast is strong in American toddlers and preschoolers, breakfast consumption dips, as kids get older. Approximately 50 percent of middle school students eat breakfast, a number that drops to 36 percent in high school. “I would say the number of students not eating a good breakfast is about 80 percent,” says Zebulon Gromm, a physical education teacher at Health Careers Academy High School in Stockton (HCA). “People don’t know what a good breakfast is. The high sugar cereal, doughnuts, and syrup coffee drinks we see students eating and drinking is not breakfast, it’s junk food… Breakfast should be a balanced meal with protein, healthy fats, fiber, vegetables, and whole grains.” Not eating breakfast is linked to poor concentration, which affects grades for students and work performance in adults. Eating a high-sugar breakfast doesn’t improve the situation either, resulting in an insulin rush followed by an energy crash not long after. These foods don’t provide the right nutrients to stay energized and focused before lunch. “Breakfast has been suggested to positively affect learning in children in terms of behavior, cognitive, and school performance,” says Aaron Mata, Principal at HCA. Aaron recommends apples, bananas, string cheese, wheat toast, eggs, or peanut butter. “We recommend that students eat a breakfast with a sufficient amount of fiber and protein,” he says. “It is important to stay away from large amounts of sugar in the morning.” HCA offers on-campus breakfast for students. That takes away some of the barriers that may be preventing students from eating a healthy breakfast. Kids can’t claim lack of knowledge about proper nutrition if the school is providing a healthy meal. It also removes any barriers of access that may exist. Regardless, only eight percent of students at HCA take advantage of the school’s breakfast program, which is available to all students. Removing barriers to eating a good breakfast is the hardest part. If time is an issue, or waking up early enough to prepare breakfast is hard, start preparation the night before. Opt for a campus breakfast if offered, and if not, meal prep nutritious meals or health bars at-home that can be grabbed on a rush out the door. As parents, get involved in the process to ensure kids are eating a good breakfast, and then grab a serving for you to lead by example.

REINVENT YOUR HOME FOR THE
Holidays BY LINDSEY RODRIAN
Hosting season is almost upon us! And sure, the kids are back at school, but your house is still reflective of the three months spent surviving the summer heat...I mean, enjoying quality family time together. Maybe there are crayon drawings on the wall, stains on the carpet, rips in the window treatments. We’re not here to judge, just to help. It’s no secret home improvement projects can be timely and inconvenient, but when you utilize local experts, your time can be freed and you can confidently shop, plan, and organize the holidays away—and reap the benefits once your home is filled with loved ones and ready to take on the task of serving as center stage!
ADD A SPLASH
A simple backsplash swap or addition can breathe new life into your kitchen or bathroom, and is a fairly small project considering the impact. Not only does the addition bring aesthetics, it boasts protection from water damage, stains, and spills. Local family business, Lodi Quality Tile & Granite, has nearly 20 years of experience, and skill set for projects of all sizes, detail, and difficulty. Tile remains the most popular backsplash option, but natural stone is quickly catching up to number one. Emerging trends welcome all types of material—ranging from shiny metal to rustic wood (think an antique wood mosaic in your kitchen…. Drool!)

Don’t feel like you have to play it “safe” when choosing your material— as a backsplash that contrasts with counter tops allows both surfaces to pop, adding a unique element. Plus, the space covered is typically small, so bold colors and patterns that may seem overwhelming will instead add tons of character and serve as a statement piece.
INSTALL A SPA
Nothing screams luxury, or upgrade, quite like a spa addition. Yeah, the inlaws may never want to leave, but you also have bliss attainable at home and at your fingertips. Today’s hot tub technology offers perks like customizable massage, outstanding craftsmanship, and even energy efficient tubs. The Spa Doctor Inc., a local Hot Tub and Swim Spa retailer, works to make your dream a reality with financing options and even refurbished spa sales that come with a warranty.

versa. If they don’t, or if they are allowing free airflow, it’s time to install a new one. On a similar note, check the crannies and cracks around your windowpanes. If you feel airflow, find a sealant at your local hardware store that works according to the size of the gap. If your home is filled with singlepane windows, form a budget plan that will allow you to replace these windows with dual-pane in the future. This simple switch, although a little costly in the short term, will pay itself off over the years by preventing summer heat from creeping in, or warm air from escaping during winter. How does this work?
The ducts floating from room to room are your number one concern when it comes to air circulation in the household. Contact local professionals, like Lovotti Air or Air Tech Heating and Air Conditioning, to perform full diagnostics on your system to ensure maximum air circulation around the household, locate leaks and joint displacement, and bring larger savings to your wallet!
INSTALL SOLAR PANELS
Holidays mean more people at home, probably leaving lights on in empty rooms. Project Sunroof’s Solar Savings Estimator reports an $11,000 savings over a 20-Year Solar Lease—with no upfront costs—for residents in San Joaquin County. Solar Purchase Power Agreements (PPAs) and solar leasing make it easier than ever to cash in and sustain savings.

Taste Grub from Celeb Chefs at the State Fair
Only in Texas would the state fair offer up eats made by celebrity chefs from across the state. The Celebrity Kitchen is a mainstay of the event, inviting guests to watch cooks perfect their craft in front of a live audience. Pick up some free tips—and some free bites—while you watch the masters at work. The Kitchen is hardly all the state fair has to offer. Live entertainment includes some of the biggest names in music (Maren Morris and Flo Rida are both scheduled to perform), fair food rivals fare from gourmet restaurants, exhibits are museum-worthy, arts and craft fairs turn out winning works of art, and Xpogo, a team of pogo professionals, show off their skills with gravity-defying tricks, flips, and spins on one of the state fair’s many entertainment stages. Take a Historic Walk in Dealey Plaza It may be a somber walk, but Dealey Plaza is one of the most visited attractions in Dallas. The site of JFK’s Assassination, committed as the President rolled through the plaza during a parade, has been named a National Historic Landmark, so both the plaza and the buildings that surround it (thought to be both possible spots the shooter acted from and witness areas) have been untouched, giving a true look back at that day in history. One block from the Plaza sits a centograph to honor JFK, and the sixth and seventh floors of the Texas School Book Depository, located in the plaza, is home to The Sixth Floor Museum, which examines the life, death, and legacy of the late President John F. Kennedy. It is located at the exact spot the government believes Lee Harvey Oswald shot Kennedy from. (DallasParks.org)
Go Back in Time with Medieval Times
Ever wanted to slip back in time to visit the world of brave knights and trusty steeds? Visit the 11th Century at Medieval Times, where families enjoy an old-timey dinner show with plenty of action. Each guest is seated in the castle’s stands, given the name of a fighting knight to cheer for. As you tear through roasted chicken and drink from goblets, you’ll witness a series of duels and contests performed by resident knights. Not to mention, displays of expert horsemanship and falconry. (MedievalTimes.com)
Visit the Animals at the Dallas World Aquarium
Located in the West End Historic District of Dallas, the Dallas World Aquarium is home to underwater creatures and assorted zoo animals. The top level of the aquarium was created to mimic the Orinoco Rainforest in Venezuela. It houses free-flying birds and other wildlife native to the rainforest, including three-toed sloths and Antillean manatees. Water-dwelling creatures include electric eels and Orinoco crocodiles. The lower level is home to the aquarium—featuring sea anemones, jellyfish, coral, and other sea creatures from around the world. The tanks house organisms from Japan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, British Columbia, the Bahamas, Fiji, Palau, Southern Australia, Lord Howe Island, and the Solomon Islands. If your brood wasn’t satisfied with this collection, take them to the Dallas Zoo, a 106-acre park that more than 2,000 animals call home. The www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com

See the Whole Town From The Reunion Tower
The Reunion Tower observation deck is the best place to catch glimpses of the entire city, 560 feet in the air. In addition to 360-degree city views, the tower features two restaurants, a gift shop, and eye-catching light shows the kids will love! Every month the GeO-Deck hosts a new line-up of games and activities for families, including bingo games, science experiments, and storytimes, so you can partake in all of the activities your kids typically enjoy, with a view that rivals any you’ve seen before. On the deck, use the interactive constellation software to leave a permanent mark that says, “we were here,” in the form of a star (reminiscent of the city locks in Paris). When you’re ready to eat, Cloud Nine Café offers light fare Monday-Friday and hot meals on the weekends. Five Sixty, the other sky-view eatery, takes it up a notch. The fare is re-imagined Asian cuisine, and the restaurant revolves as you eat to deliver the best dinner view in the city. (ReunionTower.com)
Scream Your Head Off at Six Flags Over Texas
Ever wanted to soar 16 stories through the air at speeds of 60-80 mph? In this ultimate skydiving experience, no parachute is needed. It’s just one of the thrill rides offered at Six Flags Over Texas, located near Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. Many of the rides have a Marvel theme, with super-hero names like BATMAN: The Ride, Catwoman Whip, and Justice League: Battle for Metropolis. But what will really make you scream has nothing to do with the rides at all. In October, Six Flags presents FrightFest, where zombies and ghouls takeover the park to hunt and haunt guests once the sun goes down. During the day the spookfest continues, with costume contests, scary-oke, and spooky performances by park residents. For the faint of heart, there are some old-school roller coasters to appease, plus activities and shows primed for the family. (SixFlags.com/ OverTexas)

Root for the Home Team at AT&T Stadium
Not far from Dallas Proper in Arlington, AT&T Stadium is home to the famed Dallas Cowboys. The state-of-the-art facility stays true to the “everything is bigger in Texas” motto, able to hold 105,000 roaring fans (or non-fans). See the retractable roof in person, watch games in the open-air stadium, and grub from on-site restaurant Stadium Club, offering a premier modern dining experience with all of the comforts of your favorite sports bar. In October, the Dallas Cowboys take on the St. Louis Rams (Oct. 1) and the Green Bay Packers (Oct. 8) at home. During baseball season, the Texas Rangers play mere steps from AT&T Stadium at Globe Life Park. (DallasCowboys.com/Stadium)
Continue Your Historic Journey at The Dallas Holocaust Museum
Its full name is The Dallas Holocaust Museum/Center for Education & Tolerance, and it’s home to some shattering displays and lessons of this dark period. For older kids, the museum offers a better look at the events they learn about in their history books, while younger children are encouraged to become an upstander—someone who stands up for what is right while learning about tolerance. At the museum, survivors come to speak about their experiences and share their stories with visitors. The Core Exhibit (the permanent exhibit within the museum) focuses on one day in history—April 19, 1943—and three events that took place that day to illustrate wartime heroism, Jewish resistance against all odds, and government and diplomatic indifference to the fate of Europe’s Jews. Rotating exhibits offer more in-depth looks at various aspects of the war and the lives of those involved. It’s a harrowing experience that visitors celebrate as a humanizing look at the Holocaust. Inside the 4.2acre park—the largest open space in Dallas’ business district—sits a large, iconic sculpture of cattle, created to commemorate the nineteenth century cattle drives that took place along the Shawnee Trail, frequented by Texas’ longhorn cattle. The statue stays true to Texas’ promise to be big—with 49 bronze steers standing six-feet high and three trail riders amongst them, it is the largest bronze monument of its kind in the world. Outside the park, restaurants are aplenty, the Pioneer Park Cemetery offers another fascinating look at the area’s history, and the Convention Center houses large events and collections.
Stop to Smell the Roses at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden
There are few places more beautiful to walk than inside an arboretum and botanical garden. With rows upon rows of blooming flower gardens set in a 66-acre park featuring fountains and manicured grounds, the Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Garden is one of the best. There is always tons going on at the Dallas hotspot, including weekend wine tasting, after-hours sunset viewing, and

traditional three-course garden teas offered in the on-site, DeGolyer House—the garden’s centerpiece. The mission of the Arboretum is to preserve history and nature while also acting as a public venue dedicated to horticulture and education. Within the gardens, children will most enjoy the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden. Overlooking White Rock Lake, the eight-acre section of the arboretum is dedicated to education, teaching children and their families about Earth science through 150+ kid-friendly activities, including The Texas Skywalk, The Moody Oasis, A Walk in the Clouds, and more. With children’s galleries and a café primed for family meals, it’s the ideal place to spend a family day in Dallas. (DallasArboretum.org)

It’s a Friday night and the tables are bustling with conversation. Clinking glasses and laughter merges with the sizzle of a steak on its way to a table and the careful slosh of another hearty pour of wine. These sounds echo under the dim mood lighting, providing guests with their own sweet serenade during dinner. It’s a hearty melody that enhances the senses, and prepares the appetite for another fine meal at Ernie’s Food & Spirits.

Serving up this experience has come naturally for one of Manteca’s leading restaurants, celebrating its fifth year this December. Nestled in the far back of a parking lot off Main street, Ernie’s Food & Spirits is a treat to uncover. Once discovered, it provides locals with a taste of five-star dining over and again, and offers out-oftowners a sweet reprieve before their departure. Inevitably, it drives them to return much sooner than they might have expected, just to have a taste of succulent cuts of filet mignon or fresh, wild fish. High-quality ingredients are the base to every well-seasoned meal. And produce has as much say in what is offered on the menu as the chef, who allows only the freshest, in-season entrees to reach his guests. Because of such standards, the menu must always
evolve, changing almost quarterly to ensure ripe fruits and vegetables are always readily available. But who’s to say that such strict standards are a bad thing? Especially when every visit could mean sampling from an entirely enhanced structure of dishes, built upon one another to satisfy even the ficklest appetite? Imagine, for a moment, just a few of the classics often offered on the menu. “A 12-ounce Bison Rib Steak, prepared with the current season in mind,” says Kimberly Stone, General Manager at Ernie’s. “This is an amazing dish that is a great alternative for a steak eater. Filet Mignon and Lobster Tail is a classic duo that consists of choice center-cut tenderloin and butter poached-cold water lobster, plated with seasonal vegetables and garlic mashed potatoes.”
Weekly seasonal fish are always available for those looking for a fresh catch from the watery depths. And grilled octopus, sliced and served over a chickpea and arugula salad with Piquillo pepper sauce offers a different variation to the often overindulged calamari plate. But monumental menu options aren’t the only trick up the establishment’s sleeve. Spirit aficionados can revel in the extensive library of whiskey, scotch, cognac, and bourbon stocked along the shelves in the bar room. Guests can have themselves a seat at the bar or the tables nearby to take full advantage of Ernie’s Happy Hour, which runs Monday through Thursday, from 4 to 7 PM. And, if it isn’t already made apparent by the volume of bottles aligning the nearby walls, Ernie’s can satisfy your need for a variety of wine varietals from across the world. Whether you’re out for the night of your life, looking to celebrate a very special occasion, or would like to savor the simpler joys in life, like a finely seared steak, tip your taste buds to the restaurant that can satisfy such sublime cravings. SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2017
If you haven’t heard, Chef Bradley Ogden, a pioneer in farm to fork dining, has settled in Lodi. Bradley was hired as the Culinary Director for both Wine & Roses and Rosewood. Named the Best Chef of California by the James Beard Foundation, Bradley brings his inventive cuisine to Lodi’s premier fine dining establishments. He also brings an incredible amount of experience and leadership to a culinary team eager to learn from one of America’s most renowned chefs. His New American Cuisine derives from his Midwestern roots. Growing up in Michigan, he fondly recalls fishing, hunting, and foraging off the land. His philosophy is to keep it simple and to source all products as locally as possible. Local foodies celebrated the move by Wine & Roses to shake up the culinary landscape. And shake things up he has! Chef Ogden
has launched several new dining programs, from Wine Dinners at Towne House Restaurant to Farmer’s Market specials at Rosewood. The Wine Dinners will blow your mind...six courses and six wines, prepped by the legend himself and executed with help from the entire culinary team at Towne House. Each dinner is partnered with an award-winning Lodi winery, and Chef’s firm command of pairing food and wine is remarkable. Cheers to Wine & Roses for hiring an American culinary icon, and cheers to Chef Ogden on making your home in Lodi. We look forward to all the fine food to come! TASTE HIS CREATIONS:

If quaint and cozy is your cup of tea, (or should we say, glass of merlot?) look no further than Consumnes River Farm for a charming and memorable winetasting experience. Striking a balance between seclusion and convenience, Consumnes River Farm is located just a quick drive up Interstate 5 from Lodi and is owned and operated by fourth generation farmers, Jackie and Ken. Those who make the short trip to the farm are rewarded with a combination of grape and olive offerings. Starting with flavored balsamic vinegars in 2006, the menu of delectable enticements has since grown to include two wine labels: District 11 and Thunder Oak. The Farm falls in District 11 of California’s 17 wine districts, for which the first label is named. The other is named for its thunderous oaky flavor. Both labels are award-winning vintages, recently claiming Bronze and Silver at the California State Fair this year.
SAVVY CONSUMNES BY JENNIFER MOULAISON
The oil and vinegar offerings are equally well recognized. The Bellindora Champagne Pear Balsamic Vinegar recently won Best in Class & Gold medals, as did the Fig Balsamic, Delta Barrel Balsamic, Delta Barrel Arbosana, and Delta Barrel Garlic. More vinegar flavors are currently in the works but the current selection includes Meyer lemon, garlic, habanero, and blood orange, to name a few. Surely Consumnes is a pleasant and unique destination when the mood strikes to sample these fine and unique flavors, but special occasions also exist that might tempt oil, vinegar, and wine connoisseurs. Guests are provided all they need to create a work of art while sipping wine, mimosas, and more, which are available to purchase from the tasting room. With a warm, inviting atmosphere, Consumnes River Farm boasts a country chic vibe that’s described as not so much as Grandma might be knitting at the porch but warm enough to make visitors feel entirely right at home while experiencing a breadth of oil, vinegar, and wine offerings to impress even the most refined palette, all while being a stones throw from the heart of Lodi. THE NEW FACE OF
FARMING SUZANNE LEDBETTER
The face of farming is changing. And at 26 years old, Drew Rotner of R and G Family Farms, is one of those new faces. His company is a new player in the produce world, delivering quality pomegranates, cherries, pumpkins, walnuts, and so much more to restaurants and grocers in San Joaquin County. Drew was drawn to the land at a young age, planting and cultivating produce in his parent’s back yard. But it wasn’t until he graduated from Sacramento State and was bartending at Rosewood that he was bit by the entrepreneurial bug. With more vegetables than he knew what to do with, Drew offered up extras to the chef at Rosewood. The veggies were a huge hit in the kitchen, inspiring him to launch a specialty produce company. In 2015 R and G Family Farms was born,

and has been planting seeds—both literally and figuratively—into the local food scene ever since. “The way I try to differentiate myself in a competitive market, is by being accessible when restaurants or grocers need more of a product,” Drew says. “I’ve delivered fruit to kitchens in the middle of dinner service because they ran out, or simply needed more.” Through relationship building and customer service, R and G Farms has since formed a healthy partnership with a barrage of local restaurants including Rosewood Bar and Grill, Towne House Restaurant, Fenix, Pietro’s, Market Tavern, and Prime Table. Those restaurants have transformed Drew’s produce into cocktails, salads. and sauces…but his favorite was a cherry barbeque sauce made by Market Tavern. Drew’s favorite part of farming is working with the land, being outdoors, and the unexpected

challenges of each day. He currently has 4,000 pumpkins planted, and tends to them with meticulous detail. The field should yield 5-6,000 pumpkins in a multitude of varieties including Cinderellas, White Luminas, Sugar Pie, and three carving varietals. Most will be sold to MarVal Food Stores and local restaurants. Drew admits that farming has its own unique set of challenges…the greatest of which is Mother Nature. He also reflected on the hardship as a young farmer to break into an often times saturated industry of seasoned farmers. He credits his face to face networking and effort to build strong relationships as the foundation for his farm. R and G Family Farms has already grown beyond what he ever imagined, and Drew is excited for what the future holds. FIND THE FEATURED PRODUCE: Instagram: @rg_family_farms

PUMPKINS
LIGHTER SIDE of BY SUZANNE LEDBETTER
Happy Fall Y’all! It’s officially October and that only means one thing…pumpkin is about to make its debut on menus everywhere. Pumpkin themed food and drinks have flooded the culinary scene over the past few years. Blame it on the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte or the rise of Pinterest. Either way, it’s a food that has a long history of making people happy. Believe it or not, pumpkins originated in North America, with seeds from related plants in Mexico dating as far back as 7000 to 5500 B.C. The American Indians often roasted long strips of pumpkin over an open fire to help them get through the long, cold winters. They introduced the crop to the first European settlers who also utilized pumpkin for its nutritious benefits. In fact, the first version of pumpkin pie was created when the colonists sliced off the top of the pumpkin, removed the seeds, and filled the inside with a combination of milk, eggs, spices and honey. It was then cooked in the hot ashes of a fire. Sounds delicious right? Clearly, pumpkin is a versatile and tasty treat….but did you know pumpkin is good for you too? From potassium to phosphorus to Vitamin A and C, pumpkin has tons of nutritious benefits. A cup of cooked pumpkin contains more than 200 percent of your recommended daily intake of vitamin A. If you are working out, you may want to reach for some cooked pumpkin, jam packed with potassium. Pumpkin seeds are also an excellent source of zinc, vitamin E, and healthy oils. Pumpkin is such an adaptable ingredient. Not only can it be used for a myriad of sweet and savory dishes, it can also be used as a vessel for soup, chili and dip. Check out these recipes to get you in the mood for fall and feel good too!

Charlie Lippert and Joe Ehlers have fond memories of riding around Lodi vineyards in their great grandfather’s five window Chevy truck. In fact, when the two cousins decided to start a brewery in their home town of Lodi, they knew immediately that the Red Chevy would be an integral part of their logo. The brewery would take the name Five Window Beer Co., an ode to the five windows they looked out of as children. Much to the delight of local beer lovers, the Brewery opened its doors in May. TEMPURA COPPER WILLIAMS
You can’t go wrong with tempura. It’s the ultimate app when dining out on the town in San Joaquin’s top Japanese restaurants. And few can compare to the crisp shell concocted at Komachi Sushi, where flavor and food preparation create the foundation for Instagram-worthy entrees. Our favorite? The tempura green beans. Long, slender pods are lightly battered and fried, then served up with a sweet teriyaki glaze rounded over
