SPICE OF LIFE
“Mexican food is so full of color, life, and music. It’s like a piñata exploding in your mouth. ” –Kate McLennan
Are you sick of hearing from me every month? My staff says, “Doubt it.” But, we’re doing something new and fun to further connect the SJ Mag team with the community—Publisher Letter Takeovers. First up, our Managing Editor, Lindsey: If you don’t like Mexican food, I don’t trust you. However, growing up on the East Coast with a mother that thought the food at Chiles was too spicy certainly did not mature my palette. I ate microwaved hotdogs (really?) kielbasa and sauerkraut, and whatever frozen food the Schwan man brought to my door—like a true Eastern European. Western Pennsylvania isn’t exactly a hub for ethnic eats, and with Taco Bell as my only insight, I shrugged off Mexican food (and honestly, most ethnic eats) completely. It just wasn’t my thing. But then, I moved out on my own at the fresh age of 18, into a little apartment on the Southside with a roommate that had a 1,00 Ways to Make Ramen cookbook and was seriously creative with our grocery budget. I got a job as a waitress at a little downtown Pittsburgh restaurant called Mexico City. That was my first real taste of true Mexican cuisine. Sure, I was the only fluent English speaking, non-family member of the staff—yet they took me under their wing. As a poor college student they took pity on me and fed me breakfast every morning as we set up for the lunch rush, and each afternoon they sent me home with dinner. Eggs and beans, together?! On a homemade tortilla? Who knew? Oh! The tastes to be had. Bless you, Mexico City. I slowly worked my way up through the levels of sauces, spices, and salsa until my plate was just as authentic as theirs. It opened culinary windows; it changed what my taste buds craved. It gave me a spice for…spice. It prepared me for my move to Arizona—where Los Favs reigns, and Horchata became my favorite drink, ever. I feared my move from Arizona to the Central Valley couldn’t possibly deliver what I had become accustomed to, but I was pleasantly proven wrong. Today, I eat Mexican food probably three times a week. I crave it; it speaks to me. From “hole in the wall” spots with the best pickled carrots imaginable, to taco trucks, or a more upscale experience, San Joaquin has kept my passion alive. And I am grateful.

To many in Stockton, Anna Malaika NtiAsare is best known as the woman on the arm of Mayor Michael Tubbs. Over the past two years, standing by her fiancé’s side throughout his campaign, she’s been referred to as a “trophy girlfriend” and a “pretty face.” And while those comments may disguise themselves as compliments, they strike a nerve with Anna. A world traveler, a dedicated scholar with a collection of degrees from prestigious universities, and a prominent voice for social justice, Anna is ashamed of the way some people feel they can talk about her.

“I’m typically a very vocal person but knowing we were campaigning I didn’t want to make it about me,” Anna said of her decision to not react right away. Instead she took the opportunity to speak against the stereotyping when she was asked in interviews later, and admittedly, the comments have slowed down since. “I try to be timely with my reaction and still use it as a teachable moment for people… I do think it’s important that more people challenge gender stereotyping.” Anna says her own travels coupled with her parents’ dedication to human rights issues have given her a unique understanding of human nature, and she strives to teach others about equality and the right way to get to know someone, free of assumptions. They are lessons she shares with her students at Aspire Langston Hughes Academy in Stockton where her classroom is made up primarily of low-income students who qualify for free and reduced meal plans, living in a high-poverty city where reaching an education beyond high school often feels impossible. It’s a far cry from her own childhood spent bouncing from country to country as her parents practiced international law.

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE MAY 2017
“A lot of my life revolves around my passion for helping more people have access to more things that seem inaccessible to them,” Anna shares. Her ideas fit perfectly with her plans to continue pursuing education as a career. “Education is the avenue through which we can either teach kids to repeat the cycle that they are apart of or where we can help them change their lives, and change the world.” And while Mayor Tubbs embarks on his journey in office, Anna has her own plans. She is spearheading her own initiatives for Stockton, one focused on the uplift of women and the other on helping middle school students who are at risk of suspension. Anna will be working with the San Joaquin Data Co-op to produce a Report on the Status of Women in Stockton and with the School Board on a bi-monthly conference aimed at helping eighth grade students gain more tools for healthy living, eating, and expression. She’s clear that while she supports her fiancé’s occupation, she also has dreams of her own. After all, at just 24-years-old, the Stanford and Cambridge graduate has already accomplished so much, why stop now? “I know how closely my students are watching me… I try very hard to show them that they should strike some sort of balance. They should nurture their relationships, but they also have to be dependent on themselves and have the ability to take care of themselves.” In the fall, Anna will return to Cambridge for the Ph.D in Education she’s been dreaming of as a recipient of the prestigious Gates Cambridge scholarship. She’s also written a book—a work of fiction about a dystopian universe thick with themes that permeate our current culture, highlighting racism and sexism in a hyperbolic manner—that she’s hoping to get published soon. “My dream has always been to be a public intellectual,” Anna says of her aspirations. And she has an important message for the next generation. “Do not allow others to tell you what your place is. You should be able to determine your place. If the
environment you are in isn’t giving you what you need, you have the ability to advocate for yourself,” she says. “Our kids often are taught as if change is something of the past… I really just want them to know that change is possible and they are going to be those agents of change.”

TRAVEL TALK BY LINDSEY RODRIAN
Summer is almost here, and the time for travel is upon us! You’ve survived this wet winter, and are ready to catch some serious rays and enjoy your perfect vacation. For some, it’s all about R&R (rest and relaxation), for others, adventure, for many more, survival (if it’s a family vacation). Whatever your need to roam— consider your dream, destination, and dynamic to make the most out of your travels. The brood you bring with you is just as important as where you’re going and what you’re doing. Make plans with people that want the same, and organize trips with attendees in mind. An old boss once corrected me when I asked him how his vacation went. “When the kids come, it’s a trip. Not a vacation,” he laughed. And that is often times true. When it comes to good old fashion family vacations, it can be tough to plan out-
GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR TRIP & TRAVEL PARTNERS: Something for Everyone. Communicate in advance, so that you are aware of the type of experience each person in your party is hoping for. Ride or Die. There’s good reason why people say you learn a lot about someone when traveling together. Choose wisely. Hug it Out. Agree to disagree and move on. No reason to waste time arguing during a vacation everyone invested in. Money Talks. Clarify financial arrangements and expectations before you book anything. One and Only. Find time to be alone during your trip; you’ll enjoy it. 36

ings that keep everyone smiling, especially if there are age gaps involved. Try to plan one special experience for each age bracket or collective interest. Have preteens and toddlers on your roster? Check with your hotel to see if they provide any camps, or hire a babysitter, and plan a “grown up” activity to curb the hormonal ‘tude of your almost-high-schoolers. Craving a relaxing week, but your hubby is hungry for adventure? Split off! Annual “boys” and “girls” getaways reap benefits for both parties, as they nurture friendships and individual identity, and strengthen your relationship. Spend a few days at a spa while the guys hit the slopes, and reconvene—refreshed—with
tons of great stories to share. Finally taking the Euro Trip of your dreams?! Be conscious of who you invite. Everyone has a different level of tolerance for jet lag, new environments, close quarters, and unfamiliar experiences. Traveling abroad is exciting and different, and often calls for flexibility and spontaneity. Make sure your travel partner isn’t easily overwhelmed by schedule switch ups, lodging mishaps, or long travel times. Of course, no amount of ‘thinking ahead’ can cover every possible outcome. But, a bad attitude can quickly kill a trip. So, keep communication open, keep people in mind, and most of all—enjoy yourself!

COOL IT! Five tips to keep your house cool this summer BY COPPER WILLIAMS
Summer is right around the corner and ready to kick our thermostats into the triple digits. Make sure your electric bill doesn’t follow suit by getting your air conditioner checked before our Central Valley’s lovely heatwaves hit. We sat down with one of our very own local air conditioner specialist to ensure that your cooling costs are as low as they can possibly go.
Checkup Time!
There are many reasons why you should have your air conditioner checked before summer arrives. A dirty condenser, inefficient refrigerant charge, and ductwork leakage forces your central air to work harder, and provides less cool air where you want it most. These problems can be corrected by contacting air conditioner specialist to test your system before you’re relying on it throughout the hotter months.
Optimize Your Temperature Settings
When you’re not home, set your thermostat to 85 degrees. This will keep your home from sizzling, and allow you to save some dough in cooling costs. When you return, your thermostat should be set around 78 degrees. No, it won’t be a winter wonderland, but it will keep you from crisping, and you won’t be bogged down with an outrageous electric bill.
Keep Your Cool Air Indoors
Prep your house for summer by sealing leaks you find around windows and underneath doorways. Consider investing in double pane windows, or talk to your landlord about the cost savings in utilities.

Replace Dirty Air Filters
A dirty air filter isn’t doing your lungs any good, and it certainly isn’t keeping your air conditioner in optimum working condition. Cold air must work harder to push past clogged up air filters, meaning more cool air stays up in the vents, and less is moving through your home. Scott Lovotti of Lovotti Air recommends replacing your filters every three months.
Work the System
It’s all in the details when it comes to staying cool. Keeping your curtains shut and blinds drawn will keep sun rays from turning your home into an oven. Make sure that you turn your ceiling fans on counter-clockwise to keep the air flowing comfortably from room to room. Avoid using your oven and stove as much as possible and close up any unnecessary rooms that don’t need that air-conditioned boost.
“A dirty filter will keep the cold air from properly moving through the home and vents.” –Scott Lovotti, Lovotti Air

FASHION FUELED Delta College student prepares for annual fashion show BY FAITH LEWIS D DAN HOOD The great thing about creativity is how it can begin with just a spark of inspiration. In the case of Ana Maravilla, all it took was a bit of fabric and a gentle nudge in the right direction. Ana found her own spark in the folds of the fashion club at Edison High School in Stockton, where the club advisor took her under her wing. From sewing machine basics and design, Ana’s appreciation for the fashion industry blossomed. “I was interested in how I could create something from just a piece of fabric and paper and a pencil,” Ana shares. After earning a scholarship to Delta College, Ana dove head first into the fashion program and has since been working toward her Associates of Arts degree in Fashion Design.
“Knowing design and how fabrics work inspires how to take the picture. Fashion photography isn’t about the model. It’s about the actual fabric and that’s what helps you construct the photo.” “They’re really pushing me to think outside the box,” says Ana. “Not only just designing, but the business side as well—everything behind the scenes and all the preparation. I think that’s not only good for fashion, it’s good for any career.” As one of the designers in this year’s Delta College fashion show, A Story of Fashion, it isn’t hard for Ana to find inspiration. She wants to represent the freedom she feels 40

at the beach through light colors and textures. And while Ana enjoys the design process, she has an eye for seeing the artistic elements in clothing and plans to pursue a career as a fashion photographer. “Knowing design and how fabrics work inspires [me on] how to take the picture,” Ana smiles. “Fashion photography isn’t about the model. It’s about the actual fabric and that’s what helps you construct the photo.” But more than anything, Ana wants to share her passion with the next generation of fashion industry hopefuls. After her designs appear in A Story of Fashion, she plans to visit Lathrop High School, where her high school fashion club advisor now teaches, to share her experiences with the students. Whether it be through her own designs or photography, Ana aims to show that fashion is more than something to wear. It is an expression of creativity.
DELTA’S “A STORY of FASHION” MAY 5
The crown jewel of Delta College’s Fashion Program is quickly approaching on May 5th! A Story of Fashion provides the public with an enthralling look into the works of the Fashion Event Production class and the Collections Design class. Students present their creations alongside program alumni on the runway, ensnaring over 600 in attendance. Plan your evening wear and grab a seat before curtain call at 8 PM! LIVING it up in
DOWNTOWN: LODI BY COPPER WILLIAMS
Lodi is blessed with a downtown spread that would make any city’s walkability score weep with envy. Peppered in delectable bites, various boutiques, and oh-so-many- tasting stops from our beloved appellation, it’s always a treat to see where the road takes you. And here’s where it took us!
Farmers Market Fun
With springtime back in our appellation, flowers aren’t the only plants in full bloom! Peruse locally grown fruits and vegetables every Thursday at the Lodi Farmers Market beginning May 18th from 5 PM to 8:30. Grab a bite to eat on a restaurant patio for prime time people watching, or take a to-go treat from a food truck while you browse booth vendors. About Town Tastings
A trip downtown wouldn’t be complete without stopping by our favorite tasting rooms! Huddled up next to Cheese Central (also a perfect pit-stop before wine sampling), is Weibel Family’s tasting room. Cozy on up to the bar and request one of Weibel’s many sparkling wines. When you’re looking to add brews with some of your favorite blends, Brix and Hops provides a rotating tap of local and regionally known beers, and wines from our appellation. But why stop at two, when there’s so many local blends to sample? Take up the mantel and journey to venues that skirt the edge of the tracks near Lodi’s iconic entryway into downtown, or blaze on through the businesses between School Street, Sacramento Street, and Main. FOOD TABOOS BY COPPER WILLIAMS
Not all foods are created equal, or so we’ve learned in recent years. And although our best friends, relatives, and the Internet may try to swing some foodie life hacks our way, not all of them are true. We’ve tracked down some of the most common food myths around, and have assessed whether they really can help your body—or do more harm than good.
FROZEN FRUITS & VEGGIES ARE LESS HEALTHY THAN FRESH
SUB IT OUT There are plenty of great

TRUE When you eat sugar, your body releases dopamine and opioids into your system. This is very similar to what happens when certain types of drugs are used, which triggers the brain’s pleasure centers. As time goes by and you continue to indulge, you will need to up your sugar levels to continue to receive that same type of “high”.

turkey, which helps to create serotonin, which helps to make melatonin, which helps you to sleep, is lower than in most kinds of poultry we eat. As much as you think that second helping of turkey is causing you to doze, it’s likely something else entirely.
TOAST CAN HELP CURE A HANGOVER Mostly TRUE The trick to curing a hangover is to prevent it from happening at all. And that means, the moment you get home after a long night at the club, you need to pop some bread in the toaster and guzzle down some water. Keeping hydrated, and food in your system, helps to dissipate rising alcohol blood levels.
DRINKING ALCOHOL BEFORE BED HELPS YOU SLEEP FALSE Drinking alcohol may help you get to sleep at first, but will trip up your sleep pattern, causing you to lose out on the different stages of sleep and, thus, make you even more tired the next day.
EATING CARROTS, YAMS, AND SWEET POTATOES CAN TURN YOU ORANGE! TRUE Known as carotenosis, the color change is caused by excessive levels of carotene intake, especially in young children. But don’t worry! It’s completely reversible; just take a break from certain fruits and veggies!

PREPARING
forHIGHER
EDUCATION BY LINDSEY RODRIAN
Help your high schooler excel in their final years, and set them up for ongoing success with a few easy steps:
Identify strengths, and focus on them. No one is good at everything. And as a parent, it’s important to acknowledge your child’s strengths and nurture them. Enroll in various sports and activities to help your kids discover their passions. Once you’ve nailed that down, ditch the long list of extracurricular activities, and invest and focus on their natural talents and interests.
46

SAN JOAQUIN MAGAZINE MAY 2017
Plan an exciting and challenging course schedule. Help your child choose classes that work for them, not against them. Boredom is a motivational killer, and can often result in poor grades. “Creating a challenging schedule is important to establish the rigors and expectations of college, as well as develop the necessary academic habits that lead to academic success,” notes Pacific Law Acad-
emy Principal, Carol Sanderson Gonsales. “This does not mean to say that students should be completely saturated with academics (but should also be involved with campus culture, athletics, and other social activities) when they arrive to high school, but it does mean that the challenge should encompass foundations that will set the student up for success as they proceed through their high school career.” Prepare for college entrance exams. Most four-year colleges require applicants to take the ACT or SAT, and use the score in their admission decision and placement, and even to award scholarships. Help your student become confident and comfortable, and considering enrolling in a test prep course, like those offered at Huntington Learning Center in Lodi. “We like to have every student start with an academic evaluation, which is our version of the SAT or ACT,” explains Andy Bossaller, owner of Huntington in Lodi. “It’s timed, and set up to be just like what they’ll experience when taking the official test.” This method not only curbs anxiety, but it pinpoints specific areas that need focus, and streamlines the preparation process. “We can also work with the student to identify what score they’ll need to get into their desired colleges,” Andy adds. “And make sure they get it.” Understand financial aid. Financial aid can be tricky, and it’s important to be involved in this process, as what it encompasses often spans beyond the understanding or ability of a teenager. There are three main types of financial aid that can cover tuition costs outside of your family’s budget: loans, grants and scholarships, and employment programs. Educate yourself, and empower your child through understanding and awareness of opportunities available. Head to Federal Student Aid (Studentaid.ed.gov) for a concise resource that breaks down who gets aid, the different types, ways to avoid loan scams, and tips on how to efficiently repay. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a great place to start. The form guides you line-by-line through the federal aid application process, and then awards loans and grants based on factors like household income and high school GPA. Federal Student Aid—an office of the U.S. Department of Education—provides a reported $150 billion in grants, work-study funds, and loans annually. Know your resources, and use them!

SOME LIKE IT HOT D PROFILE PHOTOS: DAN HOOD
People like the fiya! And that’s exactly what we’re serving up in our latest dining expedition across the vast venues of San Joaquin! Take a journey to some of our favorite Mexican restaurants and discover what can make your taste buds howl. We promise we won’t tell if you get a little teary-eyed from a mouthful of habanero. Just keep the drinks flowing, and the spices rolling.

Chicken Enchilada
ANGELO’S MEXICAN RESTAURANT 28 N. School St., Lodi (209) 366-2728 You don’t know chicken enchiladas until you’ve whet your appetite at Angelo’s. Summer-tinged murals consume the walls and posts inside, and a banister fence line cradles intimate outdoor seating, marking the restaurant as the ultimate backdrop for an after-move dinner venue. Once you’ve ordered your drinks and weighed your options, you’re ready to take on the chicken enchiladas. Dig into piping hot pieces of pollo, snugly wrapped up in a soft corn tortilla, doused in house-crafted enchilada sauce, and layered in melting Monterey cheese. It’s the simplicity of things that make Angelo’s enchiladas— in particular—so darn good. Pile on the rice and beans for a filling meal, day or night.
Molcajete
NENA’S MEXICAN CUISINE. 445 W. Weber Ave., #120, Stockton, (209) 547-0217 Downtown Stockton’s been laying claim to some spectacular up and coming eateries, but when it comes to Mexican Food, few can top the scenic view and flavorful combination at Nena’s. Though the indoor décor provides its charming ambiance, you can’t pass up the view from the patio outside, which opens to the Delta waterfront and nearby marina. Sunsets are incredible, and so are the menu options! Our favorite is, hands down, the Molcajete. Brace yourself for a thick slab of juicy steak, grilled just right. Pour on the grilled onions, peppers, and chorizo. Slip in the bacon, and cheese for the master of all Mexican entrees. You just might need help with this one, but, odds are, you won’t be sharing.

Drunken Shrimp
TIO PEPE’S 329 Lincoln Ctr., Stockton, (209) 957-6431 When you’re looking for a work of art served front and center, you go to Tio Pepe’s in the Lincoln Center. Their flair for elegant modern furniture, matched with simple, rustic murals makes just the right impression. As does the menu. It’s hard to choose between Mexican classics and signature dishes, but if we’d have to recommend one, it’d be the Drunken Shrimp. Got your attention? Because this delightful entree is prepared with simple ingredients like onion, salt, pepper, and butter. And did we mention tequila? Sautéed in Tio Pepe’s house sauce, and simmered with cilantro and chipotle, it’s our favorite on a Friday evening, paired with sour cream, guacamole, rice, and beans.
Steak Rancheros
HABANERO HOTS 1024 E. Victor Rd., Lodi (209) 369-3791 Brace yourselves! Because a visit to Habanero Hots is like cracking open the very pepper for which it’s named. Tempestuous flavors surround every dish, rich and bold. Robust colors decorate the interior, with beer bottle chandeliers to keep it classy and fun! And let’s not forget the wall of hot sauces, honoring a variety of Scoville levels. When you’re ready to take on an entrée, you should take pause at the Steak Ranchero. Yes, Habanero Hots indulges in a variety of cuisine, but there will always be a special place in our hearts for the thick, hand-cut slab of Rib-eye steak. This beauty is grilled to order and garnished with a house-crafted ranchero sauce and all the Monterey Jack cheese your taste buds can handle. Cut that juicy piece of meat up and enjoy with piping hot tortillas.

Chicken Caliente
CACTUS MEXICAN DINING 18961 N. Lower Sacramento Rd. Woodbridge, (209) 367-1632 Serving up memories is a specialty of Cactus, whose menu boasts fresh, well-seasoned ingredients. Located in a historic brick and mortar building off the main stretch through Woodbridge, it’s a charming favorite for those celebrating a special occasion. We can see why, with an indoor fountain, open floor plan, and gorgeous décor. Here, you’ll want to lay your hands on the Chicken Caliente. This dish is composed of a large, grilled green pepper. Stuffed with chicken, it’s layered in cheese and house crafted-white sauce and served up with rice and beans. Although the dish itself may sound hot, it’s richer in flavor. But don’t let us keep you from requesting a little more heat between your teeth.

LA PALMA MEXICAN CUISINE 2301 Pacific Ave., Stockton (209) 941-4179 When you’re craving respite from strolling down the Miracle Mile, La Palma offers a taste of Mexico with its wide, open dining area and classic interior décor. Patterned in bright, colorful tapestries and dimly set lights, it beckons to not only the lunch rush but intimate dinner dates. A must-have is their Prawn Cocktail, the perfect dish for the upcoming summer nights. Refreshingly intermingled with cucumber and avocado, onion, cilantro, and tomato, it’s mixed in with delicious cocktail sauce and sprinkled with lemon juice. Succulent jumbo prawns are deveined and served along the rim, ready to be plucked and dipped at your dining discretion. How’s that for a dinner date done right?

MEXICAN FOOD GUIDE
SHOOT IT DOWN COOL OFF YOUR MOUTH
We might just have a thing for tequila, and we’re betting double to nothing that you do, too. Distilled from blue Weber agave, true tequila can only be produced in certain parts of Mexico. But its powerful flavor boasts popularity across the world. It’s no wonder, considering the agave plant must age eight to twelve years to yield the results of what you see glistening along the bar shelves. And we took some time to find our favorites along the restaurants below.
GRAN PATRON BURDEOS
PatronTequila.com Some things really do get better with age. And Patron lives by this motto when they speak of one tequila in particular. The Gran Patron Burdeos is the crème de la crème, set to age in American and French oak barrels until it reached peak flavor in hints of oak wood, raisins, and sweet vanilla. Its finish is velvety smooth. SHOOT IT DOWN AT: Habanero Hots

DON JULIO BLANCO
DonJulio.com From the rows of rich agave, right down to the bottle, the legacy of Don Julio’s tequila lives and breathes a passion few could ever reach in their lifetime. Revolutionizing the industry, Don Julio put quality over quantity in every aspect of his product, providing tables across the world a jewel of a drink to display in full view. We pay homage to the masterful creation for which all of his tequilas are based: Don Julio Blanco. Enjoy crisp, citrus notes and that sweet agave flavor. SHOOT IT DOWN AT: La Palma
MEXICAN FOOD GUIDE
CASA NOBLE REPOSADO
CasaNoble.com Casa Noble knows the fertile, volcanic soil of Jalisco like the back of their hand. After all, seven generations have poured their blood, sweat, and tears to perfect their own, USDA certified organic bottle of tequila. Our favorite? The Casa Noble Reposado made whole in French White Oak barrels for the maximum time to yield maximum flavor. Enjoy hints of lemongrass, and nuances of vanilla scent. SHOOT IT DOWN AT: Tio Pepe’s
CASAMIGOS
CasamigosTequila.com Randy Gerber and George Clooney were looking for a taste of tequila that could stand alone. By all counts, they succeeded, crafting superb blends of Blanco, Reposado, and Anejo. And it is in their Anejo tequila that we take pause to admire, whose soft notes of caramel and vanilla remain unwavering after 14 months’ worth of aging in oak barrels. SHOOT IT DOWN AT: La Palma
GRAN PATRON PLATINUM
PatronTequila.com The Patron family concedes that they didn’t invent tequila. They perfected it. And the results are showcased in each and every uniquely crafted bottle they produce, boasting their work as not just a business, but an artform. Gran Patron is their masterpiece, with sophisticated taste that echoes through the many years of experience in rearing their Blue Weber agave. Their Platinum has been triple distilled in oak barrels, providing a full-bodied flavor that goes down smooth. SHOOT IT DOWN AT: Habanero Hots

MEXICAN FOOD GUIDE
MEXICAN PANTRY LIMES
These are a staple in any true cocina. Limes, or limon, as they are better known, are served alongside dishes at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
CHILES
If there were ever an herb to sum up Mexican cuisine, the chile would take first place in our book. Chiles are versatile in both dry and fresh forms, and used to kick up the heat a few notches, or to add a whole new range of flavor to a dish. It’s available mild, or for those with a death wish, can provide a little bit of lava to your entree.
TOMATILLOS
Gift wrapped in little husks when they’re ready for plucking, the tomatillo plays a crucial role in all great salsas and sauces.
MASA
CILANTRO
Mexican cuisine and cilantro go hand in hand. Whether it’s poured into salsa, or added into soup, this strong, aromatic herb yields a whole new level of flavor without excess calories or salt!
EPAZOTE
Served young, epazote leaves are rich, but not overpowering. Served old, epazote is a potential flavor overload. And yet, this Mexican herb is key to making traditional Mexican mole or beanbased dishes.

MEXICAN OREGANO
Fragrant, with citrus nuance, Mexican Oregano is often partnered in dishes with Chile. Used fresh or dry, its versatility to enhance dishes makes it suitable for burritos, enchiladas, salsas and more.
CUMIN
Though cumin found its beginnings in the Mediterranean, it’s an essential ingredient for anyone looking to make a proper enchilada sauce and taco seasoning.
Spanish for “dough”, masa is made with dried corn kernels, lard, and lime. It’s used in creating tamales, corn tortillas, and pupusas. This can be crafted yourself, or purchased pre-made to save time and effort.
CANELA
A much milder version of the cinnamon we all know and love, canela boasts subtle, warm flavors. It’s perfect for desserts and tea.
PILONCILLO
Normally found in blocks, rounds, or cones, Piloncillo is an unrefined sugar with beautiful color and strong molasses flavor. This ingredient is often used to sweeten desserts, or to make a mean cup of hot cocoa. And when we say mean, we mean delicious.

BY LINDSEY RODRIAN
There’s something special about disconnecting and immersing yourself in the beautiful solitude of nature. You’re unreachable. Stresses fade as the ding of incoming emails are replaced by chirping birds. You focus on the rhythmic motion required to propel your kayak gracefully forward, and enter an almost meditative state. For some, a venture of such experience requires a road trip, but for San Joaquinians, it’s backyard bliss. With the Delta, Lodi Lake, and Mokelumne River in reach, tens of thousands of locals are cashing in on the diversely rewarding hobby of kayaking. The paddle sport offers a host of benefits—it gets you out and active, improving cardiovascular fitness and increasing muscle strength in the back, arms, shoulders, torso, and chest, without worry of wear and tear on joints, as it’s a low impact activity. It relieves stress, and can capitalize on existing hobbies like bird watching, or camping.

D ROBERT CALZADA
Sure, we’re not right on the raging waters here in San Joaquin—but flatwater practice at Lodi Lake will develop and sharpen the paddle skill necessary to hit the white waters. Its slow flow is relaxing, and allows travelers to take in sights that vary from a plethora of animals, to foothills and canyons as the river winds. But make no mistake, the Mokelumne River can boast powerful currents, whirlpools, and ripples that make for a perfect balance of relaxation and adventure for newbies and veterans alike. And this year’s massive rainfall and spring’s melting snowpack has the Mokelumne River running high. Dan Arbuckle of Headwaters Kayak Shop is encouraging first timers to stay in Lodi Lake. “We’re taking our Social Paddles to the dam, and with the weather we’ve had this year, it’s a great opportunity for people to learn new skills like crossing currents and pulling out into eddys (reference our lingo list to find out what that is),” Dan shares. From mastering the forward stroke and understanding boat handling, to immersing yourself in the sport until you’re ready to hit those rapids—San Joaquin is your oyster.

LINGOLIST THE YAK BOW: The front, pointed tip of the kayak DECK: The top of the kayak that surrounds the seat HULL: The bottom STERN: The back BACK BAND: A band located behind the seat that can be tightened to adjust seat angle and provide lower back support SKEG: A fin-like piece built into the bottom of the kayak designed to help keep it straight when facing winds or currents
THE WATER DOWNSTREAM: The direction in which a river’s current flows UPSTREAM: Against the current EDDY: A river feature formed when the current is forced to flow around an obstacle, like a rock or tree stump. The deflected current forms an open space, and water flows back upstream to fill it in. Use this act of nature for resting, or getting out of the current
WHITE WATER: Water becomes aerated when a river’s gradient causes turbulence. It’s also used to describe rivers that have rapids, or shallow, fast moving stretches of a river FLATWATER: Bodies of water that are flat and slow moving, like most lakes OPEN WATER: A large body of water that lacks foliage and shoreline crucial to providing wind protection. Only experienced sea kayakers should paddle open water RAPID: A section of river where the gradient increases, causing an increase in the flow of water and turbulence
THE INTERNATIONAL SCALE OF RIVER DIFFICULTY CLASS I: Get out there and have some fun! These waters are mellow and easy-going. CLASS II: Attend a class or guided tour and get some flatwater practice in before you hit a bit of waves and whitewater. CLASS III: Take a safety course before you take on faster flowing water with features that require skilled maneuvering. CLASS IV: These rapids require skill and experience to safely maneuver around features that could cause injury.
Take your new hobby on the road and explore picturesque spots just outside of our neighborhood. Camp accommodations are close by, and we encourage you to make a weekend of it:
the upper part of the lake, which is limited to non-motorized boats. Make a weekend of it and post up at one of Spicer’s camp grounds. For only $24 per night, you can camp near the reservoir at 6,4000 feet.
COSUMNES RIVER PRESERVE, GALT, CA
SILVER LAKE, CARSON PASS, CA
Grab your yak and enjoy the last free-flowing river from the Sierra Nevada’s into the Central Valley. The Preserve’s Visitor Center is home to a dock open to non-motorized watercraft only, and has paddling brochures on hand that map out a three-hour suggested self-guided paddling tour. Take in tons of wildlife as you maneuver from the sloughs to the Cosumnes River as it joins the Mokelumne. Enjoy both flat water and swift currents throughout this adventure.
SPICER MEADOW RESERVOIR, TUOLUMNE COUNTY, CA
With 2,000 surface acres, 22 miles of shoreline, and islands and inlets waiting to be explored, this lake is perfect for paddlers. Considered the best boating facility of the three lakes (Spicer, Union, and Utica Reservoirs share space along a 9-mile stretch of Spicer Meadow Reservoir Road) it boasts a concrete launch ramp. And for the anglers, Spicer Meadow is stocked with Eagle Lake Rainbow and Kamloop trout. If you prefer to steer clear of motor boats (although the max speed is 10 MPH), stay in
Since the 20s, Central Valley residents have found refuge at Silver Lake throughout the hot summer months. Carson Pass is perfect for campers, hikers, bird watchers, nature lovers, and, of course, kayakers. It’s home to four major boating lakes, several smaller lakes, and an abundance of lodging recreational opportunities. Silver Lake is our top pick of the bunch, resting at 7,300 feet with 5.5 miles of shoreline and 385 surface acres. Small fishing boats, canoes, and kayaks are commonly found on the water.
NEW HOGAN LAKE, CALAVERAS COUNTY, CA
Just about 30 miles northeast of Stockton is New Hogan Lake, a beautiful man-made body of water in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Gorgeous views make this spot gold for all nature lovers, and a variety of developed campgrounds are easily accessible. With 4,400 acres, 50 miles of shoreline, warm summer water, and affordable entry fees, it’s worth the short trip to explore the many arms and coves, and take in the stunning views.
“Very few places in California offer such a diverse array of flat water paddling opportunities. From lazy river floats on the Mokelumne to the endless Delta back sloughs, San Joaquin is truly a paddler’s paradise.” –Dan Arbuckle, Headwaters Kayak Shop
CLASS V: If you’ve caught on to the trend by number five— you can probably guess that, here, if you don’t maneuver right, you could die. CLASS VI: Make sure your will and life insurance policy are up to date, because these rapids are not runnable.

LGBT PARADE & MUSIC FESTIVAL, JULY San Diego’s Pride parade has become one of the year’s largest events, drawing crowds from near and far. On July 15, the annual parade will return, taking over some of San Diego’s busiest streets. More than 100,000 people attend the parade each year, making it the fourth largest Pride parade in the United States. The 2017 theme will be Allied in Action: United for Justice. At night, the parade turns into a celebratory music festival that lasts into the next day, complete with five stages boasting musical acts, cultural offerings, and comedians. There is also food, an art exhibit, community services, and more.
CONCACAF GOLD CUP, JULY Catch a couple of soccer games at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego on July 9. The double-header features a matchup between Mexico and El Salvador (teams with a historic rivalry) followed by Curacao vs. Jamaica.
If you’re lucky, you can take advantage of one of San Diego’s newest animal experiences, the chance to swim with a sea otter. Nurtured by Nature is in North San Diego County, a short drive from the city center, and the experience they offer is one-ofa-kind. It’s so popular that the 2017 slots are sold out, but some are lucky enough to slip in when there has been a cancellation. A 2018 calendar will open, however a date has not yet been set. The reservation-only experience is offered year round. For those willing to forgo swimming with the otters, an alternative otter experience may be available by calling ahead for details. NurturedByNature.org Last up is one of San Diego’s most well known animal excursions— SeaWorld San Diego. Half theme park, half aquarium, the attraction includes an animal theme park, oceanarium, outside aquarium, and marine mammal park. In addition to intimate, all-day orca play—a unique experience for the whole family—there are rides, shows, and exhibits throughout the park. Take a behind-the-scenes tour and meet the animals, including resident penguins, dolphins, sea lions, and even a beluga whale. The sea lions, dolphins, and killer whales put on shows for guests at scheduled times, and a cirque show—Cirque De La Mer—has joined the ranks, featuring an underwater world with delightful, aerobatic creatures. After you’ve exhausted the wild side of San Diego, head inland for some of the big city charm the laidback beach town has to offer. The Gaslamp Quarter—given its name because of the decorative gas lamps that dot the area houses many of the city’s biggest attractions. The landscape is unique; Victorian-era mansions sit next door to modern skyscrapers, and what’s inside each is sure to be a surprise as the district provides plenty in the way of nightlife and cultural offerings. Spring and summer are the perfect time to catch a Padres game at Petco Park where high-end eateries serve grub worthy of the calories, and local beer is on tap. Or if sports aren’t your specialty, slip into one of the district’s art galleries for a highbrow evening. The cosmopolitan playground doesn’t fall short on big city attractions. For families, the Gaslamp Quarter boasts the New Children’s Museum, a carousel and candy store in Seaport Village and the U.S.S. Midway Museum. After hours is when the Quarter truly comes alive. As those gas lamps turn on, late night dining, live theatre, music, and dancing are all on the menu. Rooftop bars are aplenty in the city where it’s never too cold to hang outside, and expert mixologists and sommeliers pour the best drinks to fuel your night. Step into nightclubs (like Parq), wine bars (Vin de Syrah Wine Parlor is a good one), and dueling piano bars (The Shout House! is a can’t-miss San Diego attraction).

FINE DINING ALONG the DELTA BY COPPER WILLIAMS

D DAN HOOD
There’s an inescapable view from every table, and a breeze skirting the water’s edge of Garlic Brothers that nips at the heels of anyone bold enough to sit along the veranda in spring. But temptation is far too great to pass up a spot on the deck, what with bundles of boats bouncing along the channel, and jet skiers riding after their low wake. The door to Garlic Brothers’ patio opens wide, and another dish finds its way to an awaiting customer. The haunting scent of the wood burning oven and grill follow the server into the open air, before the breeze snaps it up and carries it away.

Greg Risso didn’t have the heart to part his love for the Delta and his passion for restaurant life, so the man behind Garlic Brothers chose to combine his childhood stomping ground with first-class cuisine at Village West Marina. After 21 years—acting as both a beacon for hungry boaters and the entryway to the eastern side of the California Delta—generations of families have continued to enjoy his ever-evolving menu, incredible service, and amazing view. But, let’s be honest. While Garlic Brothers’ staff boasts excellent table manner, and the sunsets dipping into the Delta channel are sensational, guest coming in by boat and car are raving about the menu. Classic favorites such as the succulent Grilled Pork Steak, enveloped in Thai basil sauce, and made perfect with orange zest, keep bringing in the crowds. And when you’ve got the recipe that balances out healthy and delectable (We’re talking about the Not Just Grilled Vegetable— with grilled baby carrots and red cabbage, bok choy, eggplant, and red bell peppers. All served with a house-crafted Chimichurri sauce!), you’re

working the menu options just right. Even new additions are quickly catching on. The Sweet Heat Pork Patty—infused with lemon grass, Thai chili pepper, lime leaf, green onion, honey, and garlic—is easily one of Garlic Brother’s best sellers. And The Addiction, fried pork belly with a soft-boiled egg served on white rice, is catching on like wildfire. We think it may have to do with that house-crafted spicy citrus sauce! Those that like to tip back a few drinks are rather fond of the full-service bar Garlic Brothers offers. Between brews and classic cocktails, to a wine list that bodes well for each entrée, it’s another level of dining that Greg provides guests along the water. Our personal favorite? We can’t get enough of the Fish Bowl. Yes. A literal fish bowl filled with your preferred beverage, fit for the whole table to enjoy. Although many guests drop in for the live entertainment, and to take advantage of happy hour along the Delta water, Greg considers families the foundation of his establishment. With friendly managers and staff that go above and beyond to provide
an incredible time for each family member, parents know that they can trust in Garlic Brothers to have a good time. It helps when the kids get to enjoy their own special menu! “Over twenty years, you see a couple decades of people, and now the ones that were young customers are starting their families,” Greg describes. “They’re starting the Garlic Brothers trend with their youngsters.” The next time you’ve launched your boat, or want to dine waterside, make your way to Village West Marina and enjoy Garlic Brothers, the entryway to the eastern channels of the California Delta. DIAMONDS in theWINE at WEIBEL WINERY
All that glitters isn’t gold, so the saying goes. But those browsing Lodi’s downtown tasting rooms can attest to the glistening jewels tucked away within each bottle at Weibel Winery. Fred Jr. and Judy Weibel are the third-generation caretakers to the family’s winecrafting legacy. Proof of their success rests just beyond the bar where guests can pen their orders straight onto the countertop. Ribbons hang proudly alongside bottles of sparkling Almond, and Moscato, Peach Mango, and more. “As my wife says, we’re committed to excellence,” Fred Weibel Jr. explains. “We pride ourselves in our folks giving excellent service to those that come in.” That very commitment to excellence is what guided the Weibel name to Lodi’s robust appellation. Their passion for the industry first began overseas in Switzerland, where Fred Jr.’s grandfather produced his own variations of wine and spirits. He traveled overseas and landed in the United States, and moved his family over shortly after. For the head of the Weibel name, brief partnerships in the industry came and went, but that drive for making exceptional wine remained. From Vancouver Washington, to the Williams Hotel in San Francisco, a warehouse in Folsom, and then the Leiland Stanford Winery, nothing could ebb the drive for wine in the Weibel line. With sweet release from prohibition, the family finally settled its roots deep into Lodi’s Appellation. It’s in our valley’s backyard where Weibel blends and ages their awardwinning creations. “We produce mainly sparkling, Pinot Grigio, and Zinfandel,” Fred Jr. comments. “I like our Petit

Sirah, which is going to be released this summer. It’s come around nicely.” Those that visit the tasting room, which pays homage to the 1940s, are head over heels in love with Weibel’s unique sparkling wines. “Almond is probably our biggest seller. But Peach Mango is about to overtake it. We also have standard non-flavored sparkling wines.”
Fred Jr. understands that the success his family has harnessed over the years lies in the commitment of his team. For Fred Jr., every employee is an extension of his family. “It’s a great working environment. We have great employees.” And with committed employees, the Weibel name extends its winery processing to assist other brands in the region. “We can process for folks,” Fred Jr. explains. “We can make sparkling wine for other wineries. We can process blends and ship it back to them. We’re a service to a lot of wineries throughout the country. And we have lasting relationships with a lot of people in the industry.” HAVE A TASTE WITH:

WINEDINE 209
CHERRIES Ah, the cherry. Such a sublime little bauble, dazzling in its many rouge and amber hues. Available in over 1,000 varieties, the cherry is nature’s reminder that eating great can be tasty and tasteful. After all, what fruit packs such a punch in so tiny a form? The cherry has the tenacity to take on cancer, brimming with not only vitamin C, but beta carotene, quercetin, and anthocyanins. And speaking of anthocyanins, this flavonoid helps to cut away excess weight by helping to cancel out body fat. Don’t forget that the darker the cherry, the richer it is in antioxidants, too! These little jewels provide a powerful punch of potassium to help conquer high blood pressure, and ample fiber to keep things moving along in your system! But how did such a magnificent fruit manage to make its way to the West Coast? You can thank the many monks that established missions across California! Successful tree plantings helped to pave the way for the cherry to make its home in the ocean-side states. Today, California is the second largest state to produce cherries in the U.S., and our beautiful San Joaquin County soil is the primary source for growing them! Harvest often begins mid-April, but mid-May through June is when the true cherry season begins. Ready to get your hands on this year’s beauteous bounty before they’re long gone? Then head out to our many local farmers markets, or street-side vendors for a sweet experience like no other!
LOCAL FLAVOR: U-Pick Cherries at Harris Orchards
Why purchase a bundle of cherries at the store, when you can bring the whole family out for an afternoon of fun? Harris Orchards is back on May 10th and ready to toss a basket your way so you can gather only the sweetest, ripest cherries with your little ones! HARRIS ORCHARDS 18600 N. HAND PIE INGREDIENTS:
1 (12-ounce package) Frozen sweet cherries 2/3 C. dried cherries 2/3 C. granulated sugar • 1 Tbsp. corn starch 1 Tbsp. lemon juice • 1 Tbsp. butter 2 Tbsp. pure almond extract (or vanilla extract) 1/8 Tsp. salt • 2 Packages Great Value refrigerated pie dough 1 Egg white • 1 Tbsp. water • Coarse sugar INSTRUCTIONS:
Cherry Cream Cheese
Mix the sugar and cornstarch together, and add all of the cherry pie filling ingredients to a sauce pan. Bring to boil over medium heat, stirring frequently. When mixture thickens, turn the burner off and allow to cool to room temperature, stirring occasionally. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Pull the pie dough out and let sit on counter for 10 minutes. Unroll it and cut using heart shaped cookie cutter or any desired shape. Place bottom shape on parchment-lined baking sheet and top with a couple room-temp spoonfuls of cherry pie filling. Make sure to leave room around edges for sealing. Lay another heart on top, and use fork to crimp pie sides shut. Once all pies are sealed, place in fridge and chill for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, pull out pies and cut small x-shape on top of each. Make egg wash mixture by whisking one egg white and one tablespoon of water. Brush each cherry hand pie in mixture and sprinkle with coarse sugar. Bake at 400 degrees for 18 minutes or until golden brown. *Recipe courtesy of UnsophistiCook.com
DESSERT INGREDIENTS:
¾ Cup Graham cracker crumbs (about 12 squares) 2 Tbsp. sugar • 1 Package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened 1 Can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk • 1/3 C. lemon juice 1 Tsp. vanilla extract • 1 Can (21 ounces) cherry pie filling DIRECTIONS:
In a small bowl, combine the cracker crumbs, sugar, and butter. Divide among eight dessert dishes, about 4 rounded teaspoonfuls in each. In a small bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth. Gradually add milk until blended. Beat in lemon juice and vanilla. Spoon in ¼ cup into each dish. Top with pie filling, about ¼ cup in each. Yields 8 servings. *Recipe courtesy of TasteofHome.com www.sanjoaquinmagazine.com
