Women’s Hair Loss

Why Does it Happen? & What can you do about it? by Angela Spoon

What used to be a “men’s condition” is now quickly becoming a female epidemic. It is scary to think that you could randomly wake up one day and begin to see more hair on the pillow case and less on your head. For women losing their hair, it is a serious blow to femininity and the ideal vision of themselves. We are constantly cutting and coloring to make sure our hair looks the best it can. But what if one day the un-thinkable happens… and it falls out and doesn’t grow back?

Question: What causes women’s hair loss?

Answer: Female hair loss can be caused by multiple factors, but the most common cause is an underlying genetic pre-disposition to hair loss known as androgenetic alopecia or female pattern hair loss. Unlike the popular myth that you inherit hair loss from your mother’s father, women can inherit hair loss from either side of the family. This means that women can inherit hair loss from men and vice versa. It is much more common than people know. There are other factors that can cause hair loss or increase hair loss due to family history. They include stress, lifestyle, diet, thyroid dis-function, fungal infections, scalp parasites, and medications (most common hormone replacement and birth control pills).

for the loss, the treatment protocol will vary. Usually though for common female pattern hair loss the protocol is relatively similar. We a have a 9 month program that includes twice weekly office visits for cool light laser treatments for the scalp. This stimulates cell regeneration and is already approved to promote thicker hair. Our program also includes topical pharmaceuticals, hormone therapy balancing cream, nutritional supplementation, holistic hair care products, and topical scalp serums. This is most aggressive treatment that we offer, but it works. When you use everything together the way that our program does, you are bound to get results.

Female Hair Loss on the Rise In a recent study by the Dermatology Online Journal, it states that at least 10 percent of premenopausal women will experience hair loss and that a staggering 50 percent to 75 percent of women will lose hair after 64 years of age. In a recent report on NBC Online it states these numbers are low and that female hair loss is seriously on the rise.

But why are women losing hair now more than ever? And what can be done about it? After contacting numerous hair loss professionals in the valley, one seemed to have his finger on the pulse of the problem, and this is what he said: Before

Question: Is there hope for women with thinning hair? How do you control it?

Answer: There certainly is. There are so

many tools that can be used to control female hair loss and reverse it in many cases. Once you have established the reason for the hair loss and it can be treated with a variety of methods. Unfortunately, most general physicians simply don’t have the time or the knowledge to get a full understanding of why a woman is losing her hair. The female patient is then left combing the internet for solutions that rarely leads to any real answer.

Question: How you do know what is causing your hair loss?

Answer: A simple patient history is the easiest way. Many women have blood tests for hormonal issues, thyroid dysfunction, iron levels, and vitamin D deficiency. Unfortunately this rarely produces any other cause other than normal pattern hair loss. At our clinics we use a video microscope to analyze the condition of the scalp at 50x magnification. At this level we can tell if the client has loss due to stress, diet, infection of the hair follicle, or simple hormonally related hair loss.

Question: Is there maintenance required?

Answer: 99% yes. I usually tell people it’s like brushing your teeth. If you don’t brush them and go to the dentist, your teeth will rot and fall out. The same goes for your hair. If you have a genetic hair loss problem, you have two options; oneyou can treat the problem long term, or two- let your hair fall out and go bald. Clearly our clients choose hair.

y friend from Colorado constantly asks me how I stand the heat here in Arizona. As he’s never even visited my favorite state, I imagine he envisions dry, desolate desert roads with tumbleweeds at every intersection. My response: the mountains, the desert scenery, and the nine months of pure weather perfection. You’ve already heard my love confession for desert wilderness, so I’ll spare you. But, in honor of the blistering heat, lets reminisce on those blissful months from October to June. Think back… to a time when Christmas Eve brunch is served on the patio and the kids aren’t forced to compromise their cute Halloween costumes with extra layers because of the cold. I can stand every day of excruciating heat by remembering that while the rest of the country is shoveling snow, I will be toting a light sweater.

I know it’s difficult sometimes with the kids out of school and the temperatures registering too hot even for the swimming pool. So, in honor of your sanity, we’ve compiled a Summer Survival Guide, to help you do just that, survive! As we compiled this list, I realized, summer’s not too restrictive after all. We are blessed to live in a growing, bustling city with many offerings. Owner Erica Inzunza opened OohLaLa Boutique in December ’13 and it’s been a great experience for her. “It’s going really well and I’m enjoying it,” states Inzunza. Prior to opening the doors, she had been working as a dental assistant and wound up switching career gears, in part, because she comes from a family of entrepreneurs and business owners.

“I was going to school to be a dental hygienist,” says Inzunza. “I always wanted to be a dentist growing up. A career change came up because my family owns a bunch of businesses; a flower shop, a catering company, a wedding venue and bar and my grandparents own a lot of businesses.” Among the family businesses are Lena’s Flowers, Gifts and Catering in Gilbert and 12 West Main Wedding & Event Center in Mesa. After her grandfather passed away, Inzunza went to help with running those various businesses and soon she decided to take the entrepreneurial road and open up OohLaLa Boutique. “Since the day I turned 15 and got my first job in retail, I’ve known the ins and outs of business,” states the business owner. “I was a manager at the age of 17 and I thought, ‘You know, I want to be my own boss and do my own clothing store.’” After finding the perfect retail space she was excited to fill her store with fashionable finds. “I’m a big fashionista and I love clothes. I go with the trends and I go with what’s new and what’s big and I branched off from there. We have a little bit of everything here,” explains Inzunza. “We have a little bit of home décor, a bunch of accessories and lots of different styles of clothes and we carry LA Idol jeans.” There are also handbags, shoes, scarves and jewelry at OohLaLa Boutique. “When I do get time, I try to go to market,” Inzunza states. She has her family assist her when she’s physically away from her store. “I try to go to the fashion shows in Scottsdale, too, to see what’s in.” As she selects merchandise for her store, she takes into consideration her clients tastes. “Everyone is different, so I try to choose random things that are cute.” Inzunza gets a lot of feedback from her family, too. “It helps because I have a lot of sisters and all of us like different styles,” she says. “When it comes down to me ordering stuff, I’ll take it all out and then I’ll have my sisters sit next to me and they’ll say, ‘Oh yeah, get that, it’s cute.’” The extra input is represented in the eclectic mixture of fun maxi dresses, shorts, shirts, skirts and jackets. For shoppers who aren’t quite sure what they want, Inzunza steps right in to assist. “It’s really fun. I’ll have ladies who want to do a shopping spree and they need help. We all love a good fireworks show…but seriously, how do they do it?! It’s probably a good idea to ask a professional pyro this question, so I had a chat with Fireworks Productions of Arizona’s Pyro Production Manager, Kendon Victor, for the inside info.

In a nutshell, multiple racks of tubes made of either fiberglass or cardboard hold a firework shell. Within the shell is a quick match that burns at 32 feet a second. When the quick match is lit, the lift charge (a bag of gunpowder located in the base of the firework shell) pushes the shell into the sky. When the lift charge ignites, it lights a second fuse—a timing fuse that is burning inside the firework shell as it rises to the sky. When the shell reaches the sky, the timing fuse burst charge is activated. Wrapped around the burst charge is a marble or sugar cubeshaped item called a star. The pattern of the stars inside of the casing creates the specific pattern, shape or color you see in the sky. Most common fireworks are named after flowers like the Willow, Chrysanthemum, or Dahlia. Victor says reason for this lies in the creator. “Most people agree that fireworks were started and created in China at some time from the 16th to 19th centuries,” Kendon explains. “So, the Chinese named the fireworks after plants with a similar shape or design.” Fireworks rang in type and size and come in hundreds of varieties. “If you saw a show with hundreds of fireworks, you would rarely see the same one twice,” he notes.

For a professional pyro like Kendon, the actual fireworks show is his favorite aspect of the job. He has shot fireworks for over 26 years, and averages about 30 shows a year. Keep an eye out for his signature ending, the smiley face firework, which is his favorite. Like most artists, Kendon explains that fireworks shooters come from all walks of life. His company, Fireworks Productions of Arizona, is a local, familyowned business full of talented, passionate people. Dawn Groff, WHCNP-BC of All About You Medspa, understands the importance of women’s wellness. As a single mom of 16 years, Dawn explains, “I was always the last to get health care and definitely not any luxuries such as the other things we offer here at the medspa.” In addition to amazing acne treatments, laser skin rejuvenation, spa services and Venus Freeze treatments (and the list goes on), the Gilbert location offers an array of gynecology options at an affordable price. The routine exam provides clinicians the opportunity to detect and test for abnormalities in the breast, vulva, vagina, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus and colon. If abnormalities are found or an abnormal pap smear is produced, the medspa can conduct a colposcopy. This procedure uses highpowered magnification to better visualize the cervix, vaginal walls, vulva and other areas of concern. The nurse practitioner at All About You Medspa is also trained to treat special cases like Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). As Dawn informs, PMDD can be considered a severe form of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). Both PMS and PMDD can have physical and psychological symptoms that generally occur in the days preceding the menstrual period. Physical symptoms can include breast tenderness, headaches, bloating, and joint pain. Other common symptoms are cravings, mood swings, frequent crying, panic attacks, fatigue, mood changes, irritability, and trouble focusing. So, how can you differentiate the two? “PMS symptoms can be troubling and unpleasant, but PMDD cause severe, debilitating symptoms that interfere with a woman’s ability to function,” Dawn reports. We could all use some expert advice at times. We recently spent some time with a local life coach and owner of Catherine Marie Consulting. Catherine specializes in personal and team development, and is here to help us achieve success from the inside out. Work relationships are a challenge sometimes. We have all experienced the co-worker that we just don’t jive with, or have had difficulty communicating with those we work closely with from time to time. As Catherine explains, building good work relationships will make your job much more enjoyable and productive, while offering balance to your life. She mentions a powerful statistic provided by the Gallop Organization, “If you have a friend at work, you’re seven times more likely to be engaged in your job.” This statistic is strong, but not so surprising. We are, after all, social creatures craving contact and connection. So, the more joy we find in relationships at the office, the more overall joy we will find in our career. When we respect others, and ourselves, relationships will bloom and our work will prosper. In addition to a positive day-to-day work experience, those who have strong work relationships are more innovative and creative. The classic sayings about positivity are true; if you carry yourself in a positive light, those around you will be attracted and can be influenced by your light. So, how do you make these work friends, and keep them? First, Catherine explains the importance of trust. Like any personal relationship, we need to feel safe. A trusting foundation encourages effective communication in an open and honest way. In honor of our open and honest relationship, we must always strive to offer cooperation, communication and conflict resolution. And, this goes for everyone. No matter their status, show everyone the same respect; acknowledge them and be genuine. This next tip goes without saying, but is sometimes the most difficult. Don’t gossip. It didn’t have a positive affect in high school, and it wont have one today. According to Catherine, speaking about someone “behind their back” is a relationship killer! If someone has offended you, go straight to the source; do not involve others in your matters. And if others are speaking badly about you, the best way to combat those negative thoughts and feelings is the focus on yourself. “When we focus on what we are doing we don’t need to worry about what others are saying,” says Catherine. She notes that it is also crucial to provide yourself with the same respect that you give to others. “Recognize your own emotions, worth and intelligence,” she encourages.

Spring is in full swing and it’s HOT. We all sweat, what’s to be expected when temperatures are dancing in the hundreds. But for some, sweat interrupts life and causes insecurities. Emily gave us the skinny, with over 15 years of experience in injectables, and we’d love to share what we’ve learned with you! Q. So, what exactly is hyperhidrosis? A. Hyperhidrosis is basically a fancy name for severe sweating. So many people are interested in having their underarms treated for excessive sweating. Q. How does the Botox treatment work to suppress hyperhidrosis? A. Botox freezes the sweat glands. What causes excessive sweating is hyperactive sweat glands, and Botox calms them!

Q. Who is a good candidate for this treatment? A. I am a Registered Nurse and I make that decision. If you go to the gym and you work out and sweat and it’s irritating, you are not an ideal client. An ideal client is someone whose life is interrupted by their sweating. If it doesn’t matter what time of year it is and they still struggle with sweating, that’s the ideal client. Q. What should someone expect at his or her first appointment? A. You come into the clinic, we get to know each other and we find out about your life and the difference I can make. I apply a numbing topical crème, then a round of 15 tiny injections with a teeny tiny needle in both armpits. Most clients say they can’t even feel it.

Q. Any restrictions when being treated? A. One thing I recommend is that you avoid certain substances like blood thinning medications and alcohol. Those things can cause bruising in your armpit. Also, do not touch the treated area for about four hours. Don’t work out directly after injections! SUN SOUNDS

OF ARIZONA AUDIO ACCESS TO PRINT MATERIAL FOR THOSE WITH DISABILITIES

For those who are visually impaired or have other disabilities, there is a Valley-based organization that provides audio access to many print materials. Sun Sounds of Arizona helps to bridge the information gap between printed materials and those who are not able to read it for themselves. David Noble is the development director of Sun Sounds of Arizona, which was founded in 1979. “People who cannot read due to blindness, low vision, paraplegia, head trauma and now, veterans returning from overseas with warrelated injuries, are all eligible for service from Sun Sounds,” Noble states. What they receive when they register for service is a choice of a couple of options depending on where in Arizona they live. Sun Sounds has a live radio feed that originates in Tempe and is available on their website. That feed is also provided to affiliates in Flagstaff, Tucson and Yuma. “Each of those places has a local audience with a local crew of volunteers and those individuals provide reading services on a very localized scale,” Noble explains.

“We read The Arizona Republic out of the Tempe service,” he continues. “We do so every morning that it’s published, and it takes a little longer to read on Sunday. We also read USA Today in the evening. Then we read the Wall Street Journal. On different days of the week, according to our regular schedule, we also read from popular magazines that are unavailable other places; for instance, we get items from the library, which is a terrific partner to us and Arizona State Braille and Talking Book Library. We collaborate on providing help to individuals in need because it’s the same audience.” Sun Sounds concentrates on not duplicating material that is already available on digitized recordings from either of their two partners. Some big events in the Valley have stepped up to the plate to help the organization, too. Three separate beer festivals assist with funding efforts for Sun Sounds each year. The Great Tucson Beer Festival, the Made in the Shade Beer Festival and the Great Arizona Beer Festival give every bit of funds acquired to Sun Sounds each year. “Every penny from those events comes back to

Sun Sounds. We do grant writing, and we also do some individual fundraising. We do ask for people to support us with a gift, and people can donate online,” Noble says. “The idea of providing access to printed materials with no cost to the user has been a staple of Sun Sounds ever since its inception,” he concludes. Unemployment and underemployment of people with disabilities is a huge issue, and Sun Sounds helps by providing as much access to news and information as possible to assist with that challenge.

As the heat continues to rise find the best way for you to stay active. This isn’t time to just go into hibernation and wait for cooler temperatures. We have several more months to go. Make the most of them. Join a training studio. Eat lighter and cleaner. And stay hydrated.

General manager Sean Franco says, “I love the fact that we offer a venue that is different than anything else on the street. I love watching everyone’s excitement with the live music, hearing different songs live and bringing people in and showing them a really different, unique time.” Every night is a little different, depending on the entertainers, the crowd and the songs that are requested. “We have a high energy venue and we love to have fun with our guests. We like to get them onstage and have fun with them, too. It’s kind of a mix with an all-live music venue, a little bit of comedy and a lot of great, refreshing drinks,” Franco explains. Of course, the spotlight is on the performers pounding it out on the ivories. It is an entirely unique experience to see such versatile performers completely engage with the audience and transport them into a party zone unlike any other. To say that their piano entertainers are professionals would be a gross understatement. They are emcees, ringleaders, show-stopping performers with an ever-so-slight tendency to cause a little mischief. Q: How long have you worked at The Big Bang? A: I’ve worked at The Big Bang for 12 years and I’ve lived her in Arizona working for them for 10 years. Q: What is the best thing about working at a dueling piano bar? A: I have fun every night that I work. Q: What are the most popular songs that you are requested to play? A: The most popular right now would be anything Top 40, like Katy Perry songs. Or, for me, if there’s a specific girl like Katy Perry or Lorde or Elsa from ‘Frozen’ and ‘Let It Go…’ Ugh, gosh, let it go! I don’t play it by the way, I haven’t learned it yet. My baby doesn’t watch Disney movies yet.

Q: What are some of the more wacky or random songs you know? A: I know a lot of random,’90’s R&B songs… songs by Color Me Badd, stuff like that that you don’t expect. Somebody will step up and request that and I’ll know it because I listened to it in high school or college.

Q: What do you love about the crowds that come to The Big Bang Bar? A: I love the versatility of the crowds. I love that we have older people and we have a college crowd, also. I like watching people unfold as the night unfolds. I like watching them have a couple of drinks and relax and just get into it. I like making them smile and watching them enjoy the music. Q: What would you say to someone that hasn’t experienced the excitement at The Big Bang yet? A: You’ve got to come down the stairs into the basement and see what it’s all about! I think a lot of people don’t know about us yet. I live in Gilbert and I promote it locally and I say, ‘Hey, have you ever been to The Big Bang? And they say, ‘No, what is that?’ It’s surprising to me, but I think a lot of people in their 30’s and 40’s don’t come down to Mill to hang out at night and it’s just like a little hidden gem down there. It’s a place they would go and stay all night. I know they would and I just want them to come in and experience it one time and I know they’d love it.

JEROME

Halfway between Prescott and Flagstaff (just under two hours from Phoenix) is a sleepy little historic town set high on top of Cleopatra Hill (5,200 feet). Founded in 1876, this old copper mining camp is said to be one of the most haunted destinations in the country. If you’re daring, book a room at the Jerome Grand Hotel, an old converted hospital that also houses the notorious Asylum Restaurant. Red Rock Country is home to some of the most magnificent rock formations in the world and only a 2-hour drive from Phoenix. HOW TO CREATE A BACKYARD YOU’LL WANT TO LIVE IN AND SHOW OFF. Summer is no time to be cooped up. By making your backyard livable, functional and beautiful, not only will you feel compelled to get some fresh air and relax outside, you will add that much more square footage to your home’s living space. When it comes to landscape design, the choices are nearly infinite. There are three things a homeowner needs to decide: 1) desired theme (modern and minimalist, tropical, etc.), 2) how the space will be used and by how many (big pool parties or intimate family dinners), and of course, 3) budget.

Many are choosing to keep plants to a bare minimum, some going so far as to completely remove the ubiquitous lawn for the sake of lowered maintenance, utilizing a desert theme for water conservation and maximum living space. Conversely, there are others who want “sustainable landscapes,” which can include vegetable gardens, berry bushes and small orchards.

Hardscape DESIGN Outdoor Shelters Your porch/patio is where you’ll be doing the majority of your outdoor living. Options range from poured concrete to brick to cement pavers to travertine flagstones. And of course, there’s the deck, with long-lasting wood/resin composites joining natural wood as available materials. You can have one main porch area near your house or create multiple outdoor living “rooms” for eating, napping, chatting, and so forth. To break up what are usually rectilinear spaces, give hardscapes some soft curves. Leave such spaces flat, or raise them as stepped terraces to create unique dimension in a yard.

Landscape DESIGN In our relatively temperate climate, there many options when it comes to plant life. Again, the theme helps to narrow those down. However, the exact number, type and placement of foliage are also dependent on preferred colors, soil quality and, especially, the homeowner’s desired maintenance level.

Protection from sun and rain extends the amount of time you can enjoy your outdoor living space. It also expands on the architectural details of your home’s exterior. A solid cover provides the most coverage, of course, which makes it ideal for more sun-sensitive furnishings (and skin). Partial shade structures like pergolas and gazebos allow in a bit more light. Or you can take your shade with you in the form of moveable outdoor umbrellas.

Lighting The right kind of outdoor lighting enhances the mood of the space, provides safety and highlights outstanding outdoor elements. Lighting adjustability and proper blending/layering of fixtures make sure all outdoor lighting needs are met. Outdoor lighting has become more energy efficient, adjustable and designfriendly through the use of low-voltage LEDs. Improved technology has also made the quality of LED light much better, similar to that of warm incandescent light.

An essential part of the outdoor living experience is being able to cook and eat al fresco. Today, that has moved beyond the lonely barbecue into full outdoor kitchens complete with multiple cook surfaces, refrigerators, sinks, pizza ovens, beer taps, etc.

There’s virtually no limit to the style of furnishings you can use outdoors. While other aspects of your yard may be harder to change, furnishings and decor allow you to continually change up your look outside. This can include pieces as large as sofas and dining sets to colorful accessories like throw pillows, candle holders and bird feeders.

Very often completing the outdoor kitchen are granite countertops. They just need a little extra care to endure the elements, including protection from the sun to prevent fading (or choose lighter colors), go with a matte “leathered” texture instead of high gloss, and be a bit more diligent with sealants.

Fire, Water & Extras Bringing fire and water features into your yard creates an overall sense of harmony and luxury. A natural stone waterfall or fountain provides peaceful movement and sound. Dive into a cool pool after a long, hot day. Or imagine chatting in front of an outdoor fireplace or having an impromptu marshmallow roast over a firepit on a fall evening. As with outdoor kitchens, there are other items previously reserved for interior use now able to be used safely outside. Cool new technology features like outdoor heaters that are connected directly to a home’s electricity are now available. TVs appear out of nowhere – dropping down from the ceiling or popping up from the ground, then back again to be protected from the elements.

With these kind of options, there’s hardly any reason to go back inside.

There are a few ways to create a DIY wall; I’ve found the simplest to be the frame method. Since you’ve already selected your wall, now is the time to decide on an exact size. After measuring, create your frame and line it with a sheet of plastic for water retention. Next, attach a layer of felt to the frame--the felt will serve as the foundation on which your plants will live and grow. Felt is perfect because it will allow the roots to grow through while holding water. A proper irrigation system is the most crucial aspect of the Garden Wall. You can create this yourself by lining a tube across the top of your frame, or consult an expert for easy installation. Once all of those aspects are in place, you can begin to plant your chosen greenery, hang, and enjoy!

Santa Catalina Island is an extremely popular vacation destination for Southern California residents and should definitely be considered more seriously by Arizonians. A few of our older

readers may remember the lyrics, “26 miles across the sea Santa Catalina is awaitin’ me” from the hit song “26 Miles” by the Four Preps in the 50s. The Preps style and that particular song were considered by some to be major influences on the Beach Boys and the wave of surfing and beach songs that swept the country in that era and are still popular today. Since both of us grew up in Southern California, we remember early on that we were excited about making that first journey out to Catalina. A high seas adventure for young kids! Although we visited it separately, we both had indelible memories of those initial visits. For years, we talked about making a return sojourn VALLEY LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | JUNE 2014

together, but for some reason hadn’t done so. Awhile back that all changed. In the past, we’ve often been disappointed by return visits to our yesteryear memories. Usually the current experience just doesn’t live up to expectations. But our joint Catalina excursion far surpassed those early memories. First of all, getting to Catalina has entered a new era of ocean transport. Instead of the slowmoving ferries, Catalina Express now provides high-speed jet catamarans that get you there in about an hour from Long Beach, San Pedro or Dana Point. Round trip fares range from around $60$75 and airline- type seats add comfort. Upgrades are available for a special Commodore or Captain’s Lounge (think business or first class). www.catalinaexpress. com. Upon our arrival, the quaint main town of Avalon seemed much more upscale and 68

prettier than we remembered. The promenade walkways and colorful landscaping all along the harbor have been improved dramatically. In our opinion, the overall quality of hotels, restaurants, attractions and shops has definitely improved.

WHERE TOSTAYAND DINE:

We opted to stay in the center of town at a charming European boutique-style hotel, Villa Portofino, overlooking Avalon Bay and within footsteps of the beach. It reminded us of the charming Spanish inn that was our Barcelona hangout many years ago. The rooms were delightfully decorated- some with fireplaces and ocean views. The staff was exceptionally

friendly and the rooftop sundeck was a perfect place to relax and enjoy the panoramic vistas. On our first night, we dined at Ristorante Portofino and were blown away by their creative regional Italian cuisine. diversity of restaurants in Avalon offer most ethnic cuisines with a wide price range. Before we left for Catalina a friend commented, “I don’t think there’s enough to do there”. Well, let us assure you, nothing could be further from the truth. Consider the following list: golf, tennis, biking, beach volleyball, hiking, beach walks, snorkeling, scuba, sailing, swimming, fishing, kayaking, camping, horseback riding, zip lining, and the list goes on and on. Get the idea? As a matter of fact, we would have liked to stay at least a week instead of three days on this picturesque isle. This trip only allowed us time to take three of the island tours of the many offered. The Classic Inland Motor Tour included some fascinating island history. Most of you might be surprised to hear that Santa Catalina was purchased in 1919 by the well known Wrigley family from Chicago. Wrigley gum and Wrigley Field are reminders of their illustrious history. For a number of years, Wrigley brought his beloved Chicago Cubs to Catalina for their spring training, but now the team is camped out in Mesa, Arizona as part of the Cactus League. A guided walking tour of the world famous art deco Catalina Casino, built in 1927 is a must. The Ballroom, Theater and Catalina Island Museum are extraordinary. It’s interesting to point out that the casino has no gambling. Back in that era, the word casino was used to describe a “public building used for entertainment and dances”. Our guide informed us that Las Vegas was responsible for adding gambling into the casino definition. Another tour we thoroughly enjoyed was an exciting ocean rafting adventure highlighted by a lengthy close70

up visit with a playful school of dolphins cavorting all around our motorized raft. This same company also has bike rentals, Jeep and Segway tours. www. catalinatours.com The Wrigley family is to be applauded for their efforts to keep their island as unspoiled as possible by donating 88% of the land to a conservancy. This will insure the preservation of most of the island’s natural interior and 48 miles of coastline in perpetuity. Members of the family remain as administrative overseers of the Santa Catalina Island Company. And, for those of you who just want to relax, Catalina has plenty to do for rejuvenation. Sunning at Descanso Beach Club just steps away from the casino, reading a book around the pool, leisure walks around the residential neighborhoods and shopping strolls through downtown are just a few of the options. We hope we don’t wait as long for our next getaway to this little bit of serene utopia on California’s only island resort. And remember the local mantra:

“Relax, you’re on island time.”

THE PERCH: WHERE FOODIES AND CRAFT BEER ENTHUSIASTS FLOCK

There’s nothing else in the Valley like The Perch. Since opening its doors in February 2014, the gastropub located in historic downtown Chandler has been creating quite a buzz on our culinary and craft beer scene. From the rooftop lounge and rotating selection of craft beers to the breezy patio ambiance and creative menu, The Perch is definitely unique. General manager Alan Pasquinelli was excited to recently step in at The Perch and continue to make the restaurant an envied Valley destination. “I grew up in the industry,” says Pasquinelli. I literally started when I was 10 working for an uncle that had a hofbräu in Union Square.”

At The Perch, he’s looking to take it all to the next level. “I’m looking at systems and consistency and what I see here is that there is a good staff and they want to succeed,” he explains. “I’m helping to give them the sense that this is a family and we’re all here for one reason.” Pasquinelli is going over every inch of the restaurant with a fine-toothed comb to bring guests an unforgettable experience. A visit to The Perch reveals the two-fold nature of its name. The property is home to exotic birds, such as Amazon parrots, Macaws, cockatoos, lovebirds and parakeets. “They were unadoptable because they had been abused,” states Rebecca Lavenue who co-owns The Perch with Sue Sechrest. In fact, Lavenue herself takes on many bird care duties with the help of volunteers from Arizona Exotic Bird Rescue. The Perch also boasts a relaxing rooftop lounge and bar with views of downtown Chandler. A tour of the restaurant’s property reveals large classic board games set atop repurposed tree stumps, an herb garden on the patio, a granite bar with inset “twinkling” lights and other businesses within the patio vicinity. In fact, The Perch and the surrounding businesses were all orchestrated from some of the original homes of Chandler that have been repurposed. This place is simply bursting with cool whimsy. The menu has evolved since opening day and includes everything from signature burgers and sandwiches to wings, salads and handmade pizzas. “One of the items on the menu that I love is the Grilled Cheese sandwich,” 74

Pasquinelli shares about the classic sandwich they enhance with spinach and artichoke dip, a three cheese blend and a tomato. “It’s so different from anything I’ve ever had. It’s incredible, and it’s a quirky little sandwich, but it is fun.” The house-made and hand-tossed beer dough pizzas are also signature items at The Perch. The Southwest Margarita pizza has fresh mozzarella, tomato and chimichurri sauce with a drizzle of hot chili-infused olive oil. “It’s one of our most popular pizzas and has a little kick to it,” Pasquinelli says. The Brussel Sprout and Pork Belly pizza is also an unexpected taste sensation and a departure from what is found anywhere else. Other menu items utilize beers as well, including the IPA Honey Hot, Brown Ale Teriyaki, and Stout Mole Rojo chicken wings, and the Beer Cheese & Beer Sausage pizza. The creative selection of salads includes the Macaw (with Fresno chilies, shaved coconut and jicama topped with mango jam and goat cheese) and the Wall Street, which is a spring mix bursting with fresh strawberries, candied walnuts, blue cheese crumbles and topped with a tangy strawberry balsamic vinaigrette. Andrew Bauman is the brewmaster at The Perch and has been working feverishly on the brewery. “He and I go back to when he was my GM at El Paso BBQ,” Pasquinelli explains. “I said from that point on if I could ever aspire to be the GM that he is… I thought he was perfect.” A few months ago when Bauman called Pasquinelli about coming to work for The Perch, Pasquinelli immediately said yes. The Perch is known for their vast selection of craft brews, which rotate constantly. IPAs, stouts, hefeweizens and fruit beers are all available and soon, Bauman will be creating signature beers

Ever since I can remember, I’ve had two dads. Father’s Day has always been a juggling act that meant more than neckties and homemade ashtrays. While living almost full time with my mom, to me my dad was an elusive figure that appeared every few weeks. He rarely had to be the big, bad disciplinarian no need since I was an angel, of course. As I grew older, I’d browse the greeting cards for the perfect fit for each. I wouldn’t dare pick the “I love you Daddy” card for my stepfather, yet the cards geared toward stepfathers seemed informal or like an awkward acknowledgment of a father once removed. And what kind of card do you give to a father you only see, at best, once a month? At my wedding when I’d attained a bit more maturity, there was never a question as to their roles in my special day. I couldn’t leave out either father. My biological dad had drifted in and out of my life over the years, but our relationship finally had turned into something more substantial. My stepfather stuck through all my ages and melodramatic stages and helped raise me to be the woman I am today. So I floated down the aisle that was covered in lavender roses on the arms of the two men I adored in such different ways. I split my father-daughter dance in half and glided across the dance floor and into my future as I left their dueling nests to create one of my own.

I’m an adult now, but I’ll always be their daughter. The Father’s Day cards I choose now are intentionally cheesy. Instead of neckties or cheap wallets, I try to give them the gift of time spent chatting over a bottle of wine (biological dad) or cheap beer (stepdad). These dads are an important piece to the puzzle that is my life. My husband is also the father of my own two sons, who will in turn grow into fathers themselves someday. I try to give my boys room to create their own traditions and relationships with their dad and other ‘fathers’, and I can’t wait to watch how their father-son relationships evolve as they go through their tweens and teens, and finally, adulthood. I’m just glad I don’t have to share my motherhood throne with another woman.
