Dentistry Done
Differently!
What if there was a place you could go where you could get crowns done from start where industry-leading dental innovations were created; where everything from usual to complicated dentistry is routine; and where the dentist himself is sought after nationally and internationally to discuss the latest techniques and innovations in dentistry? There is—and it’s right in your own backyard. absolute cutting-edge in dentistry in order to make your visits as short, easy and painless as possible. When Dr. John A. Garza, a licensed general dentist, envisioned opening the location 13 years ago, he vowed to create a locale that was someplace he would want to go if he were the patient. He wanted to create a place that was co-diagnostic and interactive, and where the patient themselves would be able to make a decision about their dental care based on what they were shown could be done via the latest interactive technological tools.
offered are digital ones, which reduce patient doses of radiation by 98%, and computers at the side of each chair so patients can view the x-rays (and other images) along with the dentist. Some patients joke that “it’s like NASA here!” And that’s a good thing. “For example, with our smile makeovers, it takes about three hours to do an 8-tooth makeover. There are TV screens over the patient’s head playing movies, and throughout allows the patient to leave with color, shape and teeth that they want. And because we’re doing it together, they end up with a custom smile, rather than one where a remote lab technician is making the same thing for everybody and you’re hoping that what is sent back for you is what you want. With this technique, the patient is very involved, and we’re able to tweak it as we go,” Dr. Garza explains. The one-visit solutions are possible thanks to the CEREC by Sirona Dental Systems. It’s the world’s only system for the fabrication of all ceramic dental restorations in one busy schedule for dental care! Dr. Garza is also the creator of The Crane, an innovative and industry-changing tool that removes a crown and bridge without the pounding tools dentists used previously. His expertise regarding this device and his extensive knowledge in general is called upon often in a speaking capacity, and he has taught and given lectures everywhere from overseas to nationally at places like the University of Oklahoma and the Southwest Dental Convention. So whether you need a routine cleaning, a root canal, crown, or complete smile makeover, don’t you owe it to yourself to put yourself in the hands of one of the industry’s most respected dentists, at a trusted location that offers the most cutting-edge technologies and services so that you have the easiest and most advanced dental care possible?

Women’s Hair Loss
Why Does it Happen? & What can you do about it? by Angela Spoon
What used to be a “men’s condition” is now quickly becoming a female epidemic. It is scary to think that you could randomly wake up one day and begin to see more hair on the pillow case and less on your head. For women losing their hair, it is a serious blow to femininity and the ideal vision of themselves. We are constantly cutting and coloring to make sure our hair looks the best it can. But what if one day the un-thinkable happens… and it falls out and doesn’t grow back?
1
Question: What causes women’s hair loss?
Answer: Female hair loss can be caused by multiple factors, but the most common cause is an underlying genetic pre-disposition to hair loss known as androgenetic alopecia or female pattern hair loss. Unlike the popular myth that you inherit hair loss from your mother’s father, women can inherit hair loss from either side of the family. This means that women can inherit hair loss from men and vice versa. It is much more common than people know. There are other factors that can cause hair loss or increase hair loss due to family history. They include stress, lifestyle, diet, thyroid dis-function, fungal infections, scalp parasites, and medications (most common hormone replacement and birth control pills).

for the loss, the treatment protocol will vary. Usually though for common female pattern hair loss the protocol is relatively similar. We a have a 9 month program that includes twice weekly office visits for cool light laser treatments for the scalp. This stimulates cell regeneration and is already approved to promote thicker hair. Our program also includes topical pharmaceuticals, hormone therapy balancing cream, nutritional supplementation, holistic hair care products, and topical scalp serums. This is most aggressive treatment that we offer, but it works. When you use everything together the way that our program does, you are bound to get results.
quickly as possible and treat that problem. Don’t try to treat it yourself because it wastes time that could be spent growing hair back. I obviously would recommend to call us and then come in for a consultation. Worst case scenario, you can stop the progression of the loss. Best case, we can dramatically reverse your hair loss and regrow hair. We have had numerous cases where a woman was wearing a wig or extensions when they started the treatment. Then 9 months later they were able to remove their wig permanently or stop getting extensions because their hair had gained so much volume and density.
Question: What do your clinics use to help women with thinning hair?
Answer: Depending on the reason
Question: What advice would you give a woman who is dealing with this problem?
Answer: Find the source of the problem as

Female Hair Loss on the Rise In a recent study by the Dermatology Online Journal, it states that at least 10 percent of premenopausal women will experience hair loss and that a staggering 50 percent to 75 percent of women will lose hair after 64 years of age. In a recent report on NBC Online it states these numbers are low and that female hair loss is seriously on the rise.

But why are women losing hair now more than ever? And what can be done about it? After contacting numerous hair loss professionals in the valley, one seemed to have his finger on the pulse of the problem, and this is what he said:
4
Question: Is there hope for women with thinning hair? How do you control it?
Answer: There certainly is. There are so
many tools that can be used to control female hair loss and reverse it in many cases. Once you have established the reason for the hair loss and it can be treated with a variety of methods. Unfortunately, most general physicians simply don’t have the time or the knowledge to get a full understanding of why a woman is losing her hair. The female patient is then left combing the internet for solutions that rarely leads to any real answer.
5
Question: How you do know what is causing your hair loss?
Answer: A simple patient history is the easiest way. Many women have blood tests for hormonal issues, thyroid dysfunction, iron levels, and vitamin D deficiency. Unfortunately this rarely produces any other cause other than normal pattern hair loss. At our clinics we use a video microscope to analyze the condition of the scalp at 50x magnification. At this level we can tell if the client has loss due to stress, diet, infection of the hair follicle, or simple hormonally related hair loss.
6
Question: Is there maintenance required?
Answer: 99% yes. I usually tell people it’s like brushing your teeth. If you don’t brush them and go to the dentist, your teeth will rot and fall out. The same goes for your hair. If you have a genetic hair loss problem, you have two options; oneyou can treat the problem long term, or two- let your hair fall out and go bald. Clearly our clients choose hair.

Editor’s Letter
introductions
Time to Celebrate One of my greatest life’s blessings is how lucky I am to have such caring parents. My father is gregarious, quirky, witty, tall and athletic. My mother complements his personality as someone introverted, quiet, worldly and bookish. Together they raised three children and have since seen us move to opposite sides of the country. While I know they wish we were closer together in proximity, they still exert their parenting power no matter where we are in the world. I go to them to vent, ask for help or chat about the simple happenings of my day. I wish everyone could have what I have. I hope you all take the time these two months to celebrate those who helped mold you into the person you are today—whether they are your biological parents or not. We have a few gift ideas this issue if you are struggling to find the perfect present. (Dads are so hard to shop for, right?) We also offer several service articles for your Valley lifestyle in our May/ June issue. We provide trendy skin treatments for preventative maintenance and to combat what living in the desert can do to your body. Anyone who knows me is well aware of my love of food, which is why I am delighted with our mouth-watering feature on yummy appetizers. We also spotlight one of my favorite Valley restaurants, The Spot. With super cute owners and delectable treats, we hope to tempt you to stop by sometime.

I love that.” – Promise designs to life by marrying an eclectic appeal with a clean finish. Over coffee at The Coffee Shop in Queen Creek, Promise filled me in about work and her daily happenings. Her career began in art school, leading her
Promise at work
to design for a local church, which then morphed into her freelancing, Now she’s landed as the founder and lead designer of SITEHOUSE. In late 2009, David Jay of SHOWIT, an organization designed to help creative types showcase their work via a custom website, adopted her as a designer. She loved working one on one with people, but the demand for her
22
VALLEY LIFESTYLES magazine
designs grew, with a waiting list of up to a year. SHOWIT owners quickly realized they needed to simplify her workflow and make her more accessible. Thus, SITEHOUSE was born. SITEHOUSE is a collection of themes created to run on SHOWIT’s website software and platform. These desired “Promise-esque” web templates allow the client to customize the design, enabling users to have the best of both worlds — a site that is user friendly and ready to go, but still allows them to customize their site to fit their brand. TangemanWurzell says, “It’s a great starting point for people who can’t afford a custom website, but still want the feel of one.” In addition to releasing a new set of themes every six months, TangemanWurzell is able to fulfill her desire to work closely with artists in her GO+LIVE
workshops. Phoenix hosts these intensive two-day workshops, four times a year, with hopes of increasing that to once a month in the near future. GO+LIVE workshops allow the 12-15 attendees to implement and customize their SITEHOUSE theme with TangemanWurzell standing by to answer questions and give advice. Day one includes a crash course in how to use SHOWIT, and a photo shoot for each student to have new, fresh head-shots. Day two begins with customizations and one-onone sessions. The day ends with each attendee clicking the “Go Live” button then and there. Champagne toasts are given and the experience is webcast, allowing others to watch the joy and sense of accomplishment unfold. Tangeman-Wurzell says, “These workshops allow me to really help people. It’s been so fulfilling.” When she isn’t busy designing or teaching, she enjoys having breakfast at The Farm House with her husband of four years, Brian, and being goofy with their golden-doodle dog, Parker. They kicked off the new year on a juicing adventure. “We love coming up with new recipes and blending unexpected fruits and vegetables.” Tangeman-Wurzell sums up her success by explaining that people invested and trusted in her. And she strives to do the same for others. “I love waiting and watching for opportunities that I can really impact someone. And then I seize that moment. I love that.”

good deeds
In life, adversity often prompts opportunity, and for Carrie Reed, co-founder of Lauren’s Institute for Education (L.I.F.E.), the diagnosis of her daughter, Lauren, with a rare disorder called Sanfilippo Syndrome in July 2004 prompted the establishment of L.I.F.E., a special place for developmentally disabled children in Gilbert. The 11,000-square foot stateof-the-art facility has over 20 rooms for specialized therapy, an outdoor patio, staff offices, observation by rodric hurdle-bradford rooms, sensory classrooms, and an occupational and physical therapy gym. “We believe in providing each child with every possible environment they would find in the community in a therapeutic environment,” says Margaret Travillion, co-founder and CEO of L.I.F.E. “We believe in treating the whole child to maximize their potential. We also saw a need for an educational setting that gives the children more attention and assistance that they often do not receive in public school.” With a private school that goes from preschool to sixth grade, and retail job simulation environments, L.I.F.E. truly covers the academic and professional

needs of developmentally disabled children. The education design is based on the Arizona Department of Education minimum-hour requirement, as early and intermediate learners follow a 4.5-hour academic schedule and advanced learners follow a six-hour academic schedule. The academic time is then followed by therapies and habilitation services funded by the Department of Developmental Disabilities. “Carrie from the mother’s side and me from the therapy side, saw a need for a facility that could offer everything,” says Travillion. “From the therapy side there was a disconnect between therapists who couldn’t communicate between themselves about the child. We’re trying to fill that void.” The annual tuition for L.I.F.E., a 501(c)3 non-profit charity, is $26,000. Scholarships and grants are available through private donors, L.I.F.E. and the State of Arizona Department of Education. “We believe in offering the best possible services with minimal cost to parents,” says Travillion. “Anyone who has a passion for helping has an open invitation to join us or receive a guided tour of our facilities.” The goal for L.I.F.E. in 2013 is to continue to help as many children as possible while striving for more financial independence via private donors and organizations. “Right now we have hundreds of families on our waiting list,” says Travillion. “Our biggest goal is to become more self-sufficient and expand our program to reach more consumers. We need the help of the community to help these families.” FOR MORE INFORMATION Lauren’s Institute for Education (L.I.F.E.) 3341 E. Specialists in Family Law
A recent SEARCH ENGINE report concluded that it sees a surge in web searches for separation and divorce advice starting in January and topping out in March. Many speculate that the spike in such searches can be attributed to a seasonal enlightenment. After spending the holidays together, spouses may come to the realization that they are no longer happy and it is time to end their marriages. If you are facing this difficult situation, make sure you consult a lawyer or a law group – like Gilbert’s WilsonGoodman Law Group – who specialize in family law.

Classic Button Up This structured staple is a great transition piece to help you take your outfit from day to night. Pair your button up with bright skinny jeans and a statement necklace to update the look. Another great trend for this piece in 2013 is to tuck in the front (across the first two belt loops) and leave the back un-tucked.
WHERE TO BUY
For budget-friendly blazers, try Forever 21 at Chandler Fashion Center. Katybug Faye Boutique, in Chandler, carries some cute denim blazers, too.

The Best Offense is a Great Defense Krav Maga teaches protection from real-life scenarios — By Rodric J. Hurdle-Bradford Self-defense is always a hot topic in the Valley of the Sun. Usually, the gun-debate headlines this topic, but a less violent, more realistic form of self-defense has gained popularity throughout the Valley—Krav Maga— also known as contact combat. Krav Maga is the official hand-tohand combat system taught and used by the Israeli Defense Forces of the Israeli military. Krav Maga is the most realistic modern day self-defense that anyone can learn. Techniques are based on the body’s natural reaction to stress and builds off that, making it an instinctive response to a threat. “This is not a sport but a reality scenario-based street self-defense system; there are no tournaments,” says Jay Ackerman, chief instructor of the Krav Maga Worldwide Southwest Regional Center, the original training center in the Valley since 2001. “Practical scenario-based training builds a rapid proficiency within the student. All cases incorporate a high intensity conditioning aspect to simulate a realistic encounter of fatigue and stress along with the self-defense techniques.” The popularity of Krav Maga among women skyrocketed after the 2002 movie Enough starring Jennifer Lopez as an abused woman who learns Krav

Maga. Jennifer Garner studied Krav Maga during her popular television show Alias and Angelina Jolie has studied it as well. “It is popular with women because they can get in great shape and at the same time they are learning selfdefense,” says Derrek Hofrichter, chief instructor at East Valley Krav Maga. “Enrolling in a cause for six months or a year can give anyone enhanced skills to protect themselves and their family.” Law enforcement officers and military personnel are both common participants and sources of referrals for Krav Maga. Ackerman is the highest level “forced trained” civilian law enforcement instructors in the nation, which also gives him further credibility with his

female course attendees. “It is not about size; it is about mentality,” says Ackerman. “You do not want to mess with these ladies because they have the Israeli military mentality of surviving at all costs and fighting until the death. The whole point of what we do is so people can walk in peace, be able to survive and not become a victim.” With training offered six days a week with hundreds of classes monthly at four Valley locations, including a new facility in Chandler, Krav Maga may | june 2013
VALLEY HEALTH Worldwide has more than 2,000 students ranging from age 18 to 68. More than 20 percent of training students are active law enforcement officers. Krav Maga Worldwide’s popularity has increased in the Valley because of their community outreach, an ongoing principle shared at most Krav Maga locations. Just this spring, Krav Maga Worldwide gave teachers a free course on gun defense, in light of the high number of school shootings in the last decade. “The active shooter seminar is one of our best tools we have to combat school place violence,” says Ackerman. “Our teachers are often our first line of defense during these horrible tragedies. Preparing them for these worst-case scenarios can save lives.” Regardless if the environment is the streets or a school, the practice of Krav Maga is serving a greater good. Krav Maga Worldwide now has training centers in Canada, Japan, Mexico and Europe. “The Krav Maga mentality is to survive, it is not about having an ego or showing off in front of a crowd,” says Ackerman. “We only instruct worthy, consistent citizens who use this in the right way. Now we are seeing women who want to defend their families, so we cooperate and show them how to do so because that is what we do best.”

We caught up with Hadley to discover the trends in Arizona backyard decking design: Types of Pools: “We’ve seen a shift to large, traditional diving pools,” says Hadley. With the influx of residents buying larger homes, they often have larger backyards—giving space needed to accommodate pools of greater magnitude. Pool Flooring: Oddly enough, the once universal choice in pool flooring has started transforming from typically used Pebble Tec to clean, smooth, conventional flooring.

As a necessity in the extreme Arizona summers, we give you the low down on what’s hot in pools that keep you cool. By jennifer purdie

Water Features: From stylized water wok pots to sleek rock waterfalls, an unusual water feature creates a more serene, spa-like feel to any pool. Entertainment Centers: From custom-built barbeques and pizza ovens for the food lover to fashionable fire pits and fire places for families that relish entertaining, backyards can turn into a total sanctuary. “We’ve found people are willing to spend the money to create a resort in their own backyards,” says Hadley. What a way to combat the heat!
Starting as a college job while attending ASU, Valley resident Joel Hadley parlayed a moonlight gig of pool servicing into a career. As president of National Pools & Spas, he now creates a personalized backyard oasis for thousands of local customers. Although numbers vary, the organization is in a growth mode— servicing and creating 600 pools weekly is a common number.

Backyard Decking: Hadley says that travertine pavers are the way of the 21st century. With its elegant, natural looking appeal, using travertine adds value to the home and is ideal for outdoor applications.

Satisfaction Guaranteed SAN TAN HYUNDAI ACHIEVES #1 STATUS FOR 2012 AT AWARD PRESENTATION HELD MARCH 28 Hyundai Motor Company recently named Earnhardt San Tan Hyundai in Gilbert the #1 volume Hyundai store in Arizona for 2012, which is the 4th time it has won this award in recent years. San Tan Hyundai, which has been located in the San Tan Motorplex since April 2008, sold more new Hyundai’s in 2012 than any other dealer in Arizona. The official award presentation was held at San Tan Hyundai on March 28, starting at 11:30 a.m. Several Hyundai Motor Company executives and Earnhardt family members attended. General Manager Tom Scheurn says there are several reasons why the dealership has succeeded. “Hyundai Motor Company manufactures the best vehicle I have ever sold,” most of my friends and relatives drive them, said Tom. “The vehicles seem to sell themselves, when a customer drives one it is much easier for them to decide. It’s really great to sell vehicles that are not plagued with drivability or mechanical issues.” Scheurn said that San Tan Hyundai has sold over 5800 new Hyundai’s since the dealership opened April 15, 2008. Their goal is to compete for the title of the largest Hyundai dealer in the nation. Scheurn further stated, “The philosophy of our founder, Tex Earnhardt, has always been to treat people how he would want to be treated, and if you make them happy they will not only come back but will refer their friends and relatives! I think when people meet our

sales staff and see the brand new state-of-the-art facility; they know the commitment we have towards our customers. We are currently expanding our facility to accommodate our tremendous growth. We have a great location on Val Vista and the 202 and Hyundai is consistently moving forward with modern design and technology. VALLEY WEDDINGS
Hazel & Aaron
November 13, The Inspirador, Chandler As guests were greeted by customized Play Bills, Hazel and Aaron set the scene for their New York-themed wedding. Filled with personal information about the couple, as well as a program of events for the celebratory evening, this twist on the traditional program gave each guest of what was to come. Melodies of Frank Sinatra filled the halls of The Inspirador. Celebrating all that New York City has to offer, Hazel and Aaron presented their guests themed food from New York destinations such as Little Italy, China Town and of course, the infamous New York Street Cart. Cigar boxes boasted hor d’oeuvres while “Cigarette Girls” offered White Castle Burgers in their trays as a tasty alternative. The spirit of New York was perfectly captured in Chandler that November evening, as family and friends celebrated Hazel and Aaron’s commitment to each other.

spicy shrimp and eggplant Brio Tuscan Grille 2150 . Williams Field Rd., Gilbert, (480) 917-9177, www.brioitalian.com From steaks and pastas to fresh seafood, Brio Tuscan Grille is full of flavor and options to please any palate. The Spicy Shrimp and Eggplant appetizer is one of our favorites and features pan seared shrimp and a black pepper cream sauce, served over Romano-crusted eggplant. It’s one dish that will have everyone wanting an extra piece!

broschettes del Piero at Queen Creek Olive Mill 25062 S. Meridian Rd., Queen Creek (480) 888-9290 Small bites packed with flavor are what you’ll get with the assortment of brochettes offered at del Piero at the Queen Creek Olive Mill. “A lot of folks will get three or six of them and a bottle of wine and park themselves out in the grove for a little while,” says Rob Holmes, general manager for del Piero. The brochettes feature Queen Creek Olive Mill’s extra virgin olive oil and make the perfect tasting before dinner. Try the Caprese, Grape Tomatoes, Rolled Basil Leaf and Fresh Pulled Mozzarella or the Artichoke, Chicken and Tomato, drizzled with olive oil and shaved parmesan cheese. The milder, maytag blue cheesestuffed olives are made domestically and also something to sample.

bruschetta board Postino East 302 N. Gilbert Rd., Gilbert (480) 632-6363, www.postinowinecafe.com East Valley residents have been making the drive to Phoenix for Postino’s bruschetta and wine, but with another location now open in Gilbert, the culinary commute has thankfully gotten much shorter! Postino’s is most famous for the bruschetta board appetizer that lets you mix and match four different bruschettas, making it the perfect sampling platter to share with friends. Stumped on which ones to pick? Our favorites are the Brie and Apples with Fig Spread, Smoked Salmon with Pesto and the Prosciutto with Figs and Mascarpone. Of course, you won’t want to pass up on the most classic of all: Fresh Mozzarella with Tomatoes and Basil.

crispy flatbread pizza The Living Room 2475 W. Queen Creek Rd., Chandler (480) 855-2848, www.livingroomwinebar.com Wine and cheese go together like peanut butter and bread, but The Living Room will make you rethink this classic pairing with their Crispy Flatbread Pizza. Combos include Fig and Prosciutto, Buffalo BBQ Chicken, Margherita, Pepperoni and Schreiner’s Sausage Chicken Pesto. Our favorite is the Fig and Prosciutto, which is a lovely combo and contrast to the light and crispy flatbread. The pizza sauce and mozzarella cheeses used in the flatbreads are made fresh and in-house daily, which is one of the reasons this treat is so tasty.

Including housemade linguise, horseradish pickles, Sierra Nevada mustard, smoked almonds for a little texture, and MJ pretzel bread for a touch of saltiness, this board is Vintage 95’s newest appetizer addition.

lion paw scallops Cork 4991 S. Alma School Rd., #101, Chandler • (480) 883-3773 www.postinowinecafe.com Also known as “Mano de Leon” because it literally looks like the paw of a lion, these scrumptious scallops are sourced from the Baja Gulf of Mexico Coast. They are then pan seared and served with a spicy coconut curry sauce, apple celery root salad and crispy duck confit for added texture to the dish. One whole scallop, sliced in half, serves two and is the most-requested appetizer at Cork. “The flavors appeal to a broad range of people,” says Cork Executive Chef Brian Peterson. We couldn’t agree more.

Stay fresh-faced and glowing with these modern skin treatments
While we appreciate the more than 300 days of sunshine Arizona receives each year, it comes with a negative side: the UV damage. Luckily, plenty of medical spas and plastic surgery offices are readily available to combat the sun’s destructive ways. We give you the skinny on new trends in Valley skincare, what the procedures entail and estimated recovery time.

gaining in popularity among the age defiers. Similar to Botox, it treats wrinkles in the same manner. Reportedly lasting longer than Botox with quicker results, it’s also a touch more difficult to distribute into the skin. Therefore, you should look for a trained professional before handing over your credit card. It’s too soon to tell if Dysport has the lasting market power like Botox. restylane Restylane is used to correct moderate to severe wrinkles and folds, mainly around your mouth and nose. If you suffer from the dreaded parenthesis around your lips, an injection of Restylane can even out the skin with results lasting up to 18 months. It can also be used for lip enhancement to give that full Angelina Jolie-type look.
Liquid Therapy When you should see results: 3–7 days Best serves: mid-20s to mid-80s
Botox One of the best sellers in medical spas today, Botulinum Toxin Type A, a.k.a. Botox, fills in small lines with relatively no downtime. “Botox is the most common cosmetic procedure done in the U.S., with over 5.7 million procedures in 2011. Botox is safe, effective and has few side effects. Approximately 20 percent of our patients get Botox,” says Dr. William F. Fulton, Jr., MD, medical director of the SKINovative Center for Venous Diseases in Gilbert. Less intrusive and without the stigma of plastic surgery, Botox injections also serve the purpose of preventative maintenance—it can help stop future wrinkles from forming. Results last from three months to six months. With continued treatment, the time in between Botox injections can be lengthened. Safety is high and side effects are minimal. dysport Not as well known as its predecessor Botox, Dysport is quickly

juvederm For larger, more established wrinkles, a soft tissue filler like Juve–derm works well. Injected into the skin, Juvderm is a smooth gel filler that can last up to one year. “The most popular method of lip augmentation involves the injection of a hyaluronic acid filler such as Juvederm to plump the lips. This procedure is done with topical or local anesthesia to ensure comfort. The filler is placed along the lip lines, with extra care taken to preserve a natural appearance. Injections are placed to augment the upper lip, lower lip and Cupid’s bow,” says Dr. Semone Rochlin, D.O., cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon with office locations in Gilbert and Scottsdale. perlane Also made of hyaluronic acid, Perlane plumps the skin to smooth lines and correct folds. Its results are almost immediate and work best for deeper lines and longer duration. hylaform Hylaform is a stabilized hyaluronic acid and dermal filler used to augment lips and fill in acne scars, erasing evidence of your embarrassing teenage years. Its benefits include immediate effects and a low incidence of hypersensitivity reactions. Results last between six to 12 months.
Skin Resurfacing What it does: Decreases sun damage, signs of aging and broken blood vessels When you see results: Up to seven days post-treatment Best serves: Anyone with imperfect skin texture and sun spots Factors MDs consider: Skin type, skin coloring and history of allergic reactions are all studied to determine if you’re a candidate for treatment.
dermasweep microdembrasion A decade ago, microdermabrasion became the hot ticket in improving skin’s texture by sweeping away the layer of old skin and revealing something more youthful and shiny underneath. DermaSweep is its newest form without the hazards of the old system. “The DermaSweep is very effective and feels like a massage to the face. It’s relaxing and produces great results by allowing the younger skin cells to come to the surface of the face and be seen,” says Dr. Fulton. DermaSweep uses a brush tip exfoliation, which allows for less abrasion. Treatment for the entire face takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes. Added benefit: It can remove fine lines and uneven skin pigmentation. ipl Standing for Intense Pulse Light, IPL is a laser treatment delivering pulses of light. The light stimulates collagen and treats fine lines, brown spots and other sun damage. How it works: The light flows through a filter and the treatment area is zapped; skin is protected with a chiller to cool it. For a week following treatment, you’ll experience a browning of the skin, and look almost as if coffee grinds were rubbed on your face. It will peel off and reveal a glowing skin underneath. Five treatments are recommended for the gradual reduction in brown and red pigment. Results improve after each treatment. chemical peels Chemical peels help turn back Father Time. If you spent a few too many summers sunbathing, chemical peels can help. They improve the skin by penetrating the surface to reduce discolorations from sun damage, as well

as scarring and fine lines. Although most patients say they feel a burning of the skin after treatment, the skin will peel and reveal a healthier layer. The effects of this treatment can last longer through proper moisturizing and using a sunscreen with a high SPF. japanese facelift massage A combination of a light lympathic drainage massage with deep tissue work, a Japanese Facelift Massage rids the body of toxins by helping drain excess fluid and waste. “Lymph nodes remove waste from our circulatory system. By massaging the lympathic system, we can really detoxify. This allows our skin to properly function and maintain a pH balance,” says paramedical aesthetician Geena Smith, LMT, of A Savvy Skin-Care in Gilbert. When performed regularly, this massage reduces puffiness, hyperpigmentation and acne breakouts. Those who suffer from allergies and chronic headaches have experienced results with as little as two treatments. fraxel The revolutionary laser treatment, Fraxel, diminishes fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars. It works below the skin’s surface to bring an enhanced, youthfulness to the face. The Fraxel light energy excites your skin’s collagen to revitalize skin cells, which in turn, smooth out any indentations. thermage Over time, skin loosens, folds and sags. Even after spending years working out at the gym, age and gravity are more powerful beasts. Thermage is one step you can take to combat the feared double chin. It’s a non-invasive, radiofrequency treatment that can improve the appearance of the “turkey neck,” cottage cheese thighs and muffin tops, giving you a tighter and younger look and feel. Just one treatment should yield results with little downtime.
Vein Management & Removal
Best serves: Anyone with unsightly large varicose veins to small spider veins radiofrequency ablation At SKINovative, veins are treated with a VNUS ClosureFAST™ radiofrequency vein ablation catheter. It treats the source of the veins with a high success rate, although the procedure does come with a few risks. According to Dr. Fulton, “When treating large varicose veins with radiofrequency ablation, the major concern is deep venous thrombosis (blood clots).” Fortunately this risk is very small, with less than one percent of patients developing blood clots.
Modern Make-up Best serves: Those with makeup allergies, people with busy and active lives, anyone who has trouble putting on makeup (such as those who suffer from Parkinson’s Disease), people with sparse or light hair permanent make-up You can wake up every morning looking freshly made up and go to bed looking the same. Permanent makeup has increased in popularity with offerings such as colored lips, filled-in brows, eyeliner to draw attention to the eyes and lash enhancement. Two methods of application are generally offered: SofTap and Coil Machine. SofTap is the most modern, manual option. It’s a non-mechanical way to applying pigment to your face—so be sure to choose a good technician. Coil Machine is the most powerful because it implants the most pigment per second.

Smile-In-Style Dr. Jerry Triolo, DDS 3050 E. Chandler Heights Rd. Suite 105, Gilbert (480) 279-5611 | www.SmileInStyleGilbert.com I have been married for more than 39 years and have three lovely daughters and a grandson that is 16 months old. I have been practicing Dentistry for more than 28 years. I wanted to be a dentist since I was 12 years old and am lucky enough to have fulfilled my dream after teaching high school sciences for 6 years. My interests are golf, model trains, coins and artwork. I moved to Arizona in 2009 to get away from the cold and long winters in rural upstate New York. Having practiced in a rural area I had to be able to do all aspects of Dentistry. We didn’t have the luxury of specialists so I learned to do extractions, root canals, gum surgery, minor orthodontics and cosmetic dentistry. Even though we were rural I kept up with all the latest improvements in the dental fields. I have been using an intraoral camera and digital x-rays for over 15 years. My new office has state of the art equipment and an experienced staff that will meet all your needs. “We cater to cowards” and “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” have been my mantra for my entire career. I had a very successful practice and was able to give back to my community by being on the school board for more than 13 years and a Lions club member. I hope to do the same in Arizona. I enjoy having a solo practice that allows flexibility in working with my patients. I am able to offer various treatment plans to patients along with payment options.
Intentional Wellness, LLC Leslie Clements, PT 1206 East Warner Road, Suite C, Gilbert. (480) 747-8433 I have been a Physical Therapist for 19 years and have been fortunate to work in nearly every setting of Traditional Physical Therapy. Because of that experience, I gained a healthy respect for the enormous impact physical and emotional stresses have on the rate and degree of recovery after an injury. Out of that awareness I found myself drawn to the healing arts to learn more techniques I could use in my practice. I seek after education and knowledge that will open paths to more complete recovery from any trauma. I now incorporate skills from the realm of Pranic Healing, Emotional Release Techniques, Matrix Re-Imprinting, Primal Reflex Release Techniques, Access Consciousness BARS, and use the radiance of Himalayan Salt Lamps, as well as other Energy Art techniques. I believe adding these techniques provides the boost needed to achieve a more complete and lasting mind body connection for WELLNESS.

With her mother being a nurse, she was drawn to healthcare. Even though she did not like the idea of the “Medical Model”, treating a symptom with drugs, she researched further into natural healing, until she came across Chiropractic care. Until attending Life University in Marietta, GA, Dr. Ioli thought Chiropractic was just about getting people out of pain, but later learned it was much more than that. Learning that nerve interference holds an important key to maintaining true health, she was even more excited to become a Chiropractic Physician.

William Gaunitz V, Trichologist
William Gaunitz began treating hair loss in 2002 due to his own experience with hair loss in his early 20’s. William has studied trichology (the study of the hair and scalp) in London England, Bordeaux France, and Perth Australia. In his travels, he assembled a unique hair loss treatment protocol that has helped thousands of people regrow their hair and maintain it without the need for surgical hair transplantation. William’s clinics are unique in the United States by offering a trichological scalp analysis and patient history that determines the reason for an individual’s hair loss. With this information Evolution clinics can then determine the best course of action to treat the hair loss either with either at-home treatment or in-clinic treatment options depending on the situation. In his 11 years in business, William has advanced the science of hair loss treatment with a full product line of shampoos, vitamins, topical scalp serums, and laser products. Sport figures and celebrities have used his program with great success and is he endorsed by numerous medical professionals. At his Tempe clinic, William still works personally with every individual who participates in his 9 month clinical program to ensure the highest quality results and greatest personalized service.

Cyclo restaurant
The first thing you will notice when you enter Cyclo is Duong herself. She loves her customers and her customers love her. If a customer sits at a table alone, she will not hesitate to keep them company. Her bubbly, easygoing personality makes her a friend within minutes. It is apparent by the hugs, smiles and warm greetings she receives from her customers. She believes that eating should be about celebrating. The dishes Cyclo specializes in are a celebration. The Vietnamese eggroll stuffed with chicken allows the guest to ceremoniously wrap the eggroll in mint and a red lettuce leaf. It is an appetizer that is small, yet satisfying to the palate.
The black pepper shrimp with grilled bread is a delicious mix of flavors, which include the black pepper of the shrimp, the garlicky flavor of the bread and the unexpected tang of cilantro. The restaurant is BYOB; customers enjoy bringing their own champagnes and wines to enjoy with dinner. Everything about the restaurant is part of the unique style that Duong created. This includes everything from the modern art and décor, the music playlists she creates, to her comfortable and fashionably fun outfits. “My customers aren’t just cus– tomers,” says Duong, summing it up. “They are good friends. They are part of my growing family.”
Owner Justina Duong uses her restaurant as a way to promote healthy living. “I serve things I like to eat. I will not serve my customers anything I would not want to eat myself. I make sure everything is very healthy and enjoyable.” Duong says her recipes are a mix between those passed down from her mother and sister, meals she has enjoyed during her travels, plus anything that has inspired her. The youngest of 10 children, Duong was greatly influenced by the courage and strength of her mother. Growing up, she never envisioned herself as the owner of a restaurant. Twelve years ago, she offered to help her sister with her restaurant, Khai Hoan, located in Tempe. Despite being overwhelmed for the first month, as she learned to run things, she soon fell in love with the idea of opening her own restaurant. In October 2001, Cyclo first opened its doors in Chandler.

THE LIVING ROOM
Urban Wine Tasting East Valley Vino HAUTE SPOTS By Wynter Holden
74
VALLEY LIFESTYLES magazine
After years of following in the footsteps of France and Italy, the U.S. is now the biggest wine market in the world. According to The Wine Institute, Americans sipped a whopping 856 million gallons of vino last year alone. This growing trend isn’t lost on East Valley restaurant owners. Once the exclusive purview of Scottsdale and downtown Phoenix, wine bars have spread into the family-friendly suburbs of Gilbert and Chandler.
What separates a wine bar from a standard restaurant? “Better selection, better prices and more of a bar atmosphere,” says proprietor Brian Mahoney of Scottsdale’s Terroir Wine Pub. He compares his sleek, dimly lit restaurant to the iconic Cheers in Boston; “a place where everyone knows your name.” While the attitude may be casual, Terroir’s polished concrete floor and tasting counters are decidedly upscale modern.

The same can be said of Postino East, which opened in March 2012 at the former GrainBelt building in Gilbert. Owners Craig DeMarco and Lauren Bailey of Upward Projects expanded to the East Valley in part because some longtime customers were forced to drive the 25 miles to Postino Arcadia. DeMarco describes locals as adventurous and knowledgeable about wine. “Arizonans are tuned in to the wine world and know what they like, but they also want to confidently try new things,” he says. With that in mind, Postino East boasts 100 wines by the bottle and employs a trendy tap system with a rotating selection of six wines. A retail wine license allows guests at The Living Room in South Chandler to purchase to-go bottles, not that the comfortable leather couches and curtained patio lounge aren’t worth sticking around for. Of the bar’s 22 wines by the glass ($5 each before 6 p.m.), fruity reds and chilled whites are currently the most popular with wine-savvy locals, says General Manager Ryan Watson. “They go straight for the palate. Everyone can always learn more about wine, for it is an [ongoing] education.” Education is just one reason for the local increase in wine knowledge. “…Bartenders, sommeliers and wine bars in general also help build the culture,” says Postino’s DeMarco. “Since day one, we have always believed that drinking wine at lunch is not a crime.”

Food that hits The Spot Gilbert’s newest upbeat neighborhood hangout I By lisa magoch johnson When The Spot started its eco-friendly bicycle food delivery, it was about creating close community ties. The half-mile delivery radius allowed the staff to establish a more personal relationship with local families. “I always recommend the chipotle chicken sandwich ($8.95), the steak sandwich ($8.95) or the sliders ($8.75),”says owner Brian Kingdeski. “We hand slice our steak, cook both steak and chicken in house, seasoned to perfection. Our sliders have about 15 different ingredients in the ground beef served on the soft Hawaiian rolls. All three sandwiches are unique items at The Spot that you just can’t get anywhere else.”

MINT
Francisco’s Brick Pizza & Pita’s 3765 S. Gilbert Rd. Ste. 103. (480) 855-4448
By Jessica Clare
Few ingredients can claim the versatility offered by mint. This aromatic herb shows up in everything from toothpaste to tandoori, with its use spanning cultures and cuisines. In the Mediterranean, where mint is thought to have originated, it has long been a symbol of friendship. Many Middle Eastern countries still serve mint tea to guests as a sign of hospitality. The ancient Greeks and Romans frequently used mint in perfumes, baths, and as an air freshener. Mint thrives with very little water or care, which makes it a popular addition to home herb gardens. It does have a reputation for growing too well, however, and often needs to be planted in its own container to prevent overgrowth. Mint has long been valued for its medicinal properties and used to treat headaches, heartburn, gas, indigestion, insomnia, and minor burns or skin irritations. Menthol, which is derived from peppermint oil, is often used to soothe respiratory ailments. Anyone who has ever popped a mint after a meal knows mint’s ability to mask bad breath,

making it a familiar ingredient in gum and toothpaste. Peppermint produces the strong flavor that is used in desserts. Spearmint is most often used in cooking as it has a more subtle flavor than peppermint. Leaves are chopped, pounded, or, in cocktails, muddled to release the oils that contain the minty flavor. It is commonly used in Middle Eastern, European, African and Indian cuisine in both sweet and savory dishes. Its refreshing flavor is often used to compliment fruits and vegetables in salads and to sweeten cool drinks like sweet tea and mojitos, making it indispensable to summer cooking. (Makes one mojito, but is easily quadrupled) 6-8 fresh mint leaves 2 1/2 ounces of mint simple syrup 1 ounce of rum 1 1/2 ounces of club soda 2 ounces of mixed berry juice the juice of one lime fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries In the bottom of a glass, add 1 ounce of simple syrup and the mint leaves. Muddle with a muddler or use the clean bottom of something blunt, like a screwdriver! Add ice to the glass, a few berries, and pour rum, syrup, berry juice, lime and club soda over top. Mix with a long spoon or knife and serve with an additional sprig of mint. Note: depending on the sweetness of your fruit, you may want to add more/less simple syrup, so taste as you go. Same with the rum – add more if you like your drinks strong. Also – if you simply want a blueberry, raspberry, OR strawberry mojito, follow the instructions using only that one fruit. Mint Simple Syrup 1 cup water 1 cup sugar 10 fresh mint leaves Add all ingredients to a small saucepan and heat over medium heat just until it bubbles. Turn down to low for 2 minutes, then remove from heat and let sit for 15-20 minutes.

diary of a suburban queen
Date Night in Suburbia By kelly pollard
Advice columnists would have a field day with me. My husband and I do not do date nights. It’s the thing women’s magazines always tell us is important for the marriage, but we can never seem to carry out. We get tired. Life gets in the way. We’re so tired. When a friend offered to babysit free of charge one night, I felt some pressure to do this date night right. Where to go? What to do? Why bother? One thing I struggle with in many aspects in my life is battling high expectations. This evening proved to be no exception. When my husband came home from work that happy Thursday night, he hacked and coughed, his eyes hooded and gazing passionately at his recliner. It came as no surprise really. Our household had been under a cloud of illness for weeks. A sickly husband did not mesh well with my expectations. I’d been locked in a suburban cage of illness for weeks on end, caring for ill children, disinfecting multiple surfaces and enduring my own stuffy-headed misery. I was dolled up in a short skirt and blown out hair, ready to hit the town. We didn’t even have a curfew! Yet, I offered my sickly husband an out. Worst case scenario was that he would ditch the date and I’d take my babysitter out on the town instead. It wouldn’t be romantic, but I’d still get an escape from the monotony on the home front. But my husband was in, or maybe he was just hungry and knew he wouldn’t be getting a meal at home unless he wanted a plate of chicken nuggets and applesauce. Due to his exhausted condition, he insisted on hitting the town at just after 5 p.m. There went my unrealistic expectation of walking downtown at twilight, ducking into a bar for a pre-dinner drink. He chose more of a family diner than French cuisine. Killer food but not exactly a date night atmosphere. We walked into the restaurant with a smattering of people flashing IDs to prove they qualified for the senior discount. At the self serve counter, the manager’s first comment to me after I ordered my roast beef and mashed potatoes: “Man, he got off easy tonight, huh?” Chuckle, wink. “Make sure
he takes you out for an ice cream cone next.” I blushed and inner griped at the embarrassment. Screw the ice cream cone. He would take me out for a stiff drink instead. As we sat across from each other surrounded by the old, the elderly and the near-dead, I racked my brain to remember what we did before we morphed into middle-aged parents. Were we really this old and so … suburban? Perhaps he felt guilty since I wasn’t yet hungry enough to eat even half my plate at dinner. My now diminished expectation was that we’d head back home to our kids a bit after six o’clock of our date night, leaving me to tend to bedtime duties. He shocked me though and took me out for a few post-dinner cocktails at a pub up the street. Gone were the walkers and wheel chairs, replaced with blaring music and cocktail waitresses in low cut shirts. They even checked IDs at the door—this time to thwart any efforts on the underage drinkers’ behalf. So what if we made it home before 8 p.m.? He made it home to an early bed and I had the babysitter to help me finish off the bottle of wine. I’d say it’s a suburban win.
