S

tockton’s come a long way from the dusty days of the Gold Rush when boats lined the downtown Stockton waterfront unloading eager miners and needed supplies for the Southern mines. The miners are long gone,

but our downtown waterfront remains, a tribute to our long and storied history on the California Delta. Today, Stockton’s waterfront welcomes boaters and visitors to a reborn landscape with a mix of new modern facilites and historic buildings of yesteryear. Since 2005, the downtown Stockton waterfront has welcomed a new ballpark, arena, hotel and marina. These projects join our Weber Point Events Center and downtown cinemaplex, giving visitors many options to experience our large city. You may not know this, but Stockton is California’s 13th largest city, with a population of over 290,000. We may be big, be we still have that small town charm and friendly people. You can learn more about our history at the Haggin Museum and San Joaquin Historical Society Museum. We are also very fortunate to have such a diverse population. A city founded by immigrants from all over the world, Stockton continues today to be a melting pot of diverse and interesting citizens. With that comes festive and fun cultural events year round and some of the best ethnic dining in our region. Dine on dishes from Southeast Asia, the Middle East and South of the Border among many other great local restaurants and diners. Check out our dining guide for a peek at our fare! If you're a foodie, you’ll also love our central location in California’s Central Valley. Not only are we among one of the finest wine regions in California (the Lodi Wine appellation), but we are surrounded by orchards and fields growing nearly everything under the sun. Enjoying our locally grown produce is easy, with farmer’s markets, fruit stands and wineries waiting to share their bounty. Many of our local restaurants also offer seasonal specials showcasing our locally grown crops. We’ve just scratched the surface, we have so much to share and so few pages to do it in, so be sure to visit our website too (www.visitstockton.org) and we look forward to seeing you soon!

WRITTEN BY CHRIS KOTSOGLOU

owntown Stockton is a unique gem to the California’s Central Valley. It hosts events, sports, a vibrant nightlife and a waterfront that is second to none.

You want events? The Asparagus Festival, California’s Best of the West Food Fest draws over 100,000 visitors annually, and has mainstay events such as the Asparagus Eating contest featuring American Hero and Northern California legend Joey Chestnut. Weber Point, the host location of the Asparagus Festival, is a prime location to host events with its setting surrounded on three sides by water. So events, not your thing. Sports? We've got that too. The Stockton Ports, a longtime local staple, keep America’s pastime fun and affordable for all in Banner Island Ballpark, arguably the best minor league ballpark in America with its location right on the water. The Stockton Arena, opened in 2005, home to the Stockton Thunder professional hockey team from the ECHL. Ice Hockey, once a wonder to many, is now Stockton’s most popular sport, and the Thunder bring in over 200,000 fans to their home games each season, from October to April. But what if events and sports is your thing, and you like to have a good time. With a 16 screen movie theatre in the heart of downtown (now with IMAX!) and over 20 bars and restaurants located within the comfy confines of Downtown Stockton, you wont have a shortage of entertainment, dining, or drinking options to satisfy even the harshest critics. Retail shopping, coffee shops, and art galleries dot the landscape, bringing the best of regular patrons and new onlookers to their storefronts. The Downtown Stockton Marina brings boaters that enjoy the San Joaquin Delta and hosts waterfront dining options at the Waterfront Warehouse and University Plaza Waterfront Hotel. Boaters have the opportunity to dock at the brand new Marina, and can enjoy shopping, dining, and special events all year round. On top of the draws to Stockton, the mainstays are that Downtown Stockton is the county seat for San Joaquin County and has over 20,000 employees working downtown daily. Downtown Stockton hosts almost every level of government office and private enterprise. With aggressive, business-friendly incentives to draw and keep businesses downtown, such as the San Joaquin County Enterprise Zone and city sponsored small-businesse loans, Downtown Stockton welcomes businesses of all different kinds to take a look at what there is to offer. Chitiva’s serves up authentic Mexican food, tasty tropical drinks, and a giant side of fun six nights a week. Saturday nights after 9 p.m., the fajitas and enchiladas play second fiddle to the DJs and live bands on center stage—the Salsa is still hot, but now it’s a dance, not a culinary dip. If all this has you craving a cool Delta breeze, look no further than the restaurant’s waterfront dining. So go find your dancing shoes, sip a cool mojito, and have some fun.
