WINEDINE209 MAGAZINE

Over the last 15 years our publication has grown and changed with the community, nurturing roots as the region’s most comprehensive lifestyle magazine. It’s been nothing short of a pleasure to share personal stories, introduce budding businesses and revisit old favorites. It is no secret we love our local restaurants and wineries here at the San Joaquin Magazine, as each one of our monthly issues provide insight on each. With many years spent sharing the delicacies of our area, we decided it was about time to create a go-to guide for all of our areas hidden and not so hidden gems tucked between the vineyards and sprinkled throughout the Central Valley. Our mission for this annual publication was simple: to guide our dedicated readers and residents through the fabulous restaurants and wineries that truly put San

Joaquin on the map as a top wining and dining destination. We’ve worked with our local eateries and vintners to bring you an allinclusive directory to make your next night out, celebration, or gathering as appetizing as possible. Through exploration of the area’s finest, community-focused businesses we’ve cultivated a mouth-watering report covering many aspects of local food and drink, ranging from creatively named local blends, and Lodi’s most affordable reds to the newest bistro’s on the block- so dig in!

TOP Cellars TEN EASY DRINKING (AFFORDABLE) LODI REDS

We’ve all been there...You walk into a wine shop and are quickly overwhelmed by the plethora of bottles and brands – many of them at absurdly painful prices. If you’re unfamiliar with the wines, how do you choose? Will you be able to taste the difference between the $60 bottle of wine and the easily-affordable bottle priced at $16? When it comes to price, the fact of the matter is: There are simply no correlations between the pleasure you receive and the price you pay when it comes to premium quality, commercial blends. So forget those overpriced hefty wines. It’s the taste of the wine that matters most, and that my friends, is where Lodi has other California regions beat, offering crazy-good wines at everyday values. To prove it, here are 10 suggestions for easy-drinking, highly affordable Lodi reds. Adapted from The LoCA Life & Times blog, LodiWine.com, with permission from the Lodi Winegrape Commission. Original author Randy Caparoso.

PEIRANO ESTATE 2012 “THE IMMORTAL ZIN” OLD VINE ZINFANDEL Forget about the ludicrously low price point and you’re still left with a pure, unadulterated Zinfandel which exhibits bright raspberry notes and is unfettered by an excess of alcohol, drying tannin or heavy oak. ($14) Peirano.com

HARNEY LANE WINERY 2012 ZINFANDEL Perky and upbeat with smooth, zesty aromas and flavors of fresh, happy-tosee-you red and blue berries, this highly quaffable wine is your “quintessential” Lodi Zin. ($22) HarneyLane.com

12

WINEDINE209 MAGAZINE

IRONSTONE VINEYARDS 2013 ROUS VINEYARD OLD VINE ZINFANDEL Produced with fruit sourced from an east-side single vineyard planted in 1909, this stunning wine exudes intense violets, mild pepper, and wild berry perfumes which billow from the glass like a flower blossoming before your eyes. ($28) IronStoneVineyards.com

BARSETTI VINEYARDS 2012 ZINFANDEL Underpriced, and hence underestimated, this medium-bodied Zinfandel is round and juicy, wafting aromas of blackberry and raspberry fruit-filled chocolate box confection, rounded out by a zesty natural acidity. ($13) BarsettiVineyards.com

SEPTEMBER 2015 - AUGUST 2016

ONESTA 2012 BECHTHOLD VINEYARD CINSAULT Made from the oldest vines in Lodi, planted in 1886, this lush wine is spiked with kitchen spices and strawberry-rhubarb pie goodness. Drink now or save for your Thanksgiving table as a fantastic alternative to Pinot Noir. ($29) OnestaWines.com

MCCAY CELLARS 2012 PAISLEY RED BLEND Paisley is a fitting name for this wine’s playful, curvaceous, medium-body texturing and silky – while being a tad bit snappy – red berry perfumes and cracked sweet black pepper and mild cardamom spiciness. ($28) McCaycellars.com

VIÑEDOS AURORA 2010 PETITE SIRAH This wine has everything a Petite Sirah lover wants: Hue as black as night, texture as smooth and thick as a brick with chocolatey, peppery spiced earthen flavors that will knock your socks off. ($21) VinedosAurora.com

KLINKER BRICK WINERY 2013 CARIGNANE Sourced from some pretty spectacular 106-year-old vines, this easy-drinking Carignane pops with black cherry aromas wrapped in whiffs of black tea and upbeat flavors suggesting sweet leather and earthy dried sage. ($25) KlinkerBrickWinery.com

MICHAEL DAVID WINERY 2012 PETITE PETIT This intriguing blend shames every other red wine in its price category with its flamboyance of rich, plummy aromas and flavors infused with notes of peppery beef bouillon and smoked bacon. ($18) MichaelDavidWinery.com

ST.AMANT WINERY 2013 LEVENTINI VINEYARD BARBERA Thanks to Lodi’s gentle growing environment, the natural tartness of the Barbera grape comes across rounder and fleshier in this medium-bodied wine which boasts flavors of fresh black cherry and strawberry. ($18) StamantWine.com

GET READY FOR A RHÔNE AWAKENING!   Surrender to the rich, ripened flavor of Acquiesce’s wine varietals when enjoying all the Lodi Appellation has to offer. Sue Tipton, the proprietress of Acquiesce Vineyards, has tenderly raised her Southern French grapes to provide any white wine or rosé aficionado the perfect sip with each tilt of their glass. Fans of Acquiesce’s aromatic fragrances and incredible flavors can look forward to varieties like the 2014 Roussanne, a Gold Medal winner with lush cream and apricot taste. Looking for a sip of what started it all? Try Acquiesce’s very own 2014 Belle Blanc, a blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Viognier that pays homage to the white Chateauneuf du Pape wine that spurred Sue to begin her Rhône vineyard.   Acquiesce’s tasting room, located in Acampo, showcases a splendid view of the estate surrounded by rows and rows of proudly perfected vines. The century old barn whose doors slide open wide, prompt guests to soak in their beautiful surroundings within safe reach of another awaiting sample. It’s a classic setting with a personal touch that Sue has carefully nurtured, and it’s one more reason why people from across the region are coming in for a sip!

Barsetti Vineyards

A SMALL FAMILY WINERY WITH DEEP ROOTS    Agriculture runs deep in the Barsetti bloodline; a legacy that Janis Barsetti Gray and her husband Richard have continued to embrace and nurture. Janis’ grandfather Gottardo Barsetti first settled into the family’s gorgeous Galt landscape in 1912, operating a small farm. This careful bond between the rich earth and family tradition is what prompted the Grays out of retirement and into the wine making business, producing varieties such as Barsetti’s first Red Varietal, Old Town Red, and Dolce

Maria, a dessert wine named in honor of Janis’ grandmother.   Janis and Richard opened their first tasting room in December 2014. The muchanticipated opening offered an exceptional venue to sample Barsetti’s bouquets. This is only one of the many ways Barsetti has grown throughout the years; ways that Janis has attributed to her beloved, late husband. “Barsetti Vineyards is a small family winery with deep roots in the Galt community,” Janis decrees. “A family and a business that gives back to the community. My husband, Richard, who passed away in April, was such a large part of this business. He was my support to keep moving forward.”

Delicato Family Vineyards FAMILY, FARMING & QUALITY WINE FOR CONSUMERS

400 4th St., #150 Galt • (209) 744-6062

As one of the leading winegrowers in America, the Indelicato family has proven its devotion to winemaking for generations. Utilizing environmentally-conscious, sustainable growing practices and strategic economic principles, Delicato Family Vineyards tracks the quality of its wines, from vine to bottle. This level of dedication comes directly from Gasparé Indelicato, the patriarch of the family, who emigrated from Italy to begin anew in the lush California landscape.   Pushing through Prohibition and the Great Depression produced a family of strong-willed, tender-hearted stewards of the land. The second and third generations of this prosperous family are continuing what Gasparé began in 1924.   Visit Delicato’s tasting room off Highway 99 between Stockton and Manteca to peruse the large selection of gift and gourmet items, personalized gift baskets and, of course, wine! Sip your favorite red or white varietals chosen from the tasting menu and pass a glass of non-alcoholic sparkling grape juice to the designated driver. Your time touring the extensive wine selections and learning more about the family behind each tantalizing glass will have you coming back for more.

Harney Lane Winery LOVE. LAUGHTER. FAMILY.   When you’re at Harney Lane, you’re not just a guest, you’re part of the family. That’s what six generations worth of hospitality and warmth bring when you go sampling at the Mettler’s remarkable winery. From vine to bottle, Harney Lane takes care of it all, with as much care and dedication involved in the their wine-making process as they have for each other. Meet the matriarch of the family, Kathleen, as you step foot in their tasting room, sharing stories with friends and pouring glass after glass of quality blends.   The faces behind the Harney Lane legacy are never far from the vineyards. Jorja Lerner, daughter of Kathleen, took up the family tradition after 15 years as a physical therapist. Her husband, Kyle Lerner, thrives in the thrills that the winery business brings, and their two children, Kirsten Elizabeth and Ian James, are just as sharp as their predecessors when it comes to the process of making a perfect blend. It’s a family as close as the intertwining vines the late patriarch, George Mettler, used to conceive their first batches of wine.

Jessie’s Grove

DELICIOUS WINES FROM ANCIENT VINES   Ancient vines thrive in the blissful California sunshine at Jessie’s Grove Winery. These very same vineyards, first planted in the 1800’s, continue to produce some of the richest, most flavorful wines that the Grove has to offer. Their history begins with Joseph Spenker, a young man who’d come to Stockton with only pennies in his pocket. In just ten years he’d claimed over 1,500 acres of fertile land in the Lodi Appellation and had started his family. It didn’t take much longer before Joseph had planted his first vineyards, the start of Jessie’s Grove.   The Grove has two tasting rooms for your sipping pleasure. Visit the Estate and Home Winery to sample among the vineyards and 32 acre oak grove. Stop by the museum and take a step into Jessie’s past, the daughter of Joseph Spenker to which the estate is named. Her precious birthright, the Grove itself, is yours to enjoy. If you’re in downtown Lodi you’re never too far from the tasting room at the Olde Ice House! This structure, first built in the 1800’s, is yet another valuable piece of Lodi history you’re free to roam when you come in for a taste of the Grove’s spectacular stock.

It’s all about the reds down at Macchia Wines, an exquisite winery experience along the Lodi Appellation that prides itself in rich Zinfandel and Italian flavor! Owners Tim and Lani Holdener have been hosting unique tasting experiences in their centuryold farmhouse and along their picnic-perfected lawns for nearly 15 years. It’s an antiquated warmth and cheer that Lani has cultivated, paired with the bold and robust flavor of the Zins that Tim crafts. This perfect coupling of comfort and award-winning blends continuously draw in hundreds of guests each week.   Join the Holdeners at Macchia and sample renowned flavors such as Mischievous, a 2013 Zinfandel wine that took Gold in the California State Fair. The 2012 Sangiovese Amorous, another Gold winner in the California State Fair, would like nothing more than to complete your fine dining experience. Lucca Winery IF THE DOOR IS OPEN, COME ON IN AND ENJOY A GLASS OF WINE!   Farming is everything for the Lucchesi family. For generations they’ve been caretakers of the Central Valley and its abundant rows of orchards and vines. The practice was passed down from Dionisio Lucchesi, who first emigrated from Italy to the Delta region. Teaching his son, Guido, the delicate balance of farming throughout the seasons, Guido continued to maintain what his father had built and began to experiment with the family-grown robust Zinfandels. This led to special batches of wine that only family and friends were lucky enough to enjoy.   When Alan, Guido’s son, took over and expanded the family business, he added 400 acres of vines to the family’s agricultural venture. This abundance of rich berries prompted Alan to share the harvest with his brother, Mark. The result was a slow, but passionate growth into what is now Lucca Winery. Mark has since continued to perfect his own blends of rich, wondrous wines. Take a drive down to Ripon and visit the tasting room. You’ll even have the chance to talk with Mark about his craft. Have a seat at one of the ornate barrel tables, and relax and enjoy a sipping experience only a small, family-run business can offer.

Oak Farm Vineyards AN ELEVATED WINE TASTING EXPERIENCE

There’s a rich history behind Oak Farm Vineyards, tucked away amongst the vines and ancient oak trees. It’s a place where classic charm meets our modern world and transforms into a lavish venue for friends and family to enjoy. Life first breathed into this farm-turned-winery when William DeVries and his wife purchased the property in the 1860s. Taken by the majestic oaks that dotted his property, DeVries declared that not a single tree would be chopped down without due cause. It is from their grand stature that Oak Farm Vineyards received its name.

Years later, Oak Farm Vineyards has become the centerpiece for many wine enthusiasts across the region. Dan Panella, owner and president of Oak Farm, is the man to thank for much of what the winery has become. Alongside friends, family, and fellow Oak Farm employees, Dan has established a tried and true tradition of providing the Lodi region fantastic assortments of wine. Stop in and sample the award winning 2012 Zinfandel from Wegat Vineyard. Its earthy scent and luscious berry flavor will leave you satisfied to the very last drop! Take a glass of the 2013 Barbera, another Gold medal winner, whose deep crimson and silky texture will keep you coming back for more by the bottle!

Another timeless classic is the 2012 The Immortal Zin, a Zinfandel variety plucked in perfect temperatures and settled into French and American oak barrels, with flavor that’s almost blissfully eternal.   Peirano Estate is a winery with no club to hold back its varieties from the public. It freely offers its entire selection to anyone willing to sample each bountiful bouquet. Its tasting room has been fashioned from the family’s 1900s household built so long ago. Pasos Vineyards    Antonio Pasos had a vision born from years of work in his family’s vineyards; owning his own winery and perfecting his own variation of wine making. To the delight of many in the Lodi Appellation, Antonio transformed his dream into the reality we know today as Pasos Vineyards. Utilizing Mediterranean varietals, perfect for San Joaquin Valley’s climate, Pasos Vineyards has cultivated exceptional blends that continue to draw in aficionados.   Drop by the Tuscan Winery Village in Lockeford and spend a few hours lounging in the rustic charms of their tasting room. Pasos Vineyard’s specialty lies in Mediterranean and Bordeaux styled wines, robust berries infused with the aromatic quality of the French, Hungarian and American oak barrels used to age each batch. Savor these rich flavors while sampling complimentary appetizers.    Visiting on a Saturday? You’re in luck! Abstract artist David Jon Foster’s gallery is located in the loft above the tasting room. In the afternoons you can find the artist hard at work, applying watercolors and charcoal to canvas; creating unique, inspiring pieces. Many of his works become sensational labels for Pasos’ bottles.

So how does the region’s insane diversity in the world of wine apply to you? It means that your palate can journey to far-away lands simply by visiting one of Lodi’s 65 boutique tasting rooms which offer a plethora of unique varietal wines produced from Lodi-grown winegrapes – winegrapes which are typically associated with countries outside of the United States, like Albariño, Torrontés or Gewürztraminer.

Bokisch Vineyards 2012 Lodi Tempranillo

Indigenous to the Rioja region of Spain, the Tempranillo (tem-praNEE-yoh) grape has found a second home in Lodi’s silty and volcanic clay loam soils. A complex blend of 90% Tempranillo fruit sourced from two separate vineyards and 10% Graciano, this ruby wine showcases aromas of rose petals, ripe plums and blackberry syrup ending with white pepper, cinnamon and a slightly smoky sweet cedar. Its bright acidity combined with soft dry tannins and a lingering finish makes it perfect for paella, spicy grilled sausages or smoked Cheddar cheese. ($18) BokischVineyards.com

Oak Farm Vineyards 2014 Lodi Verdelho

A native of Portugal, Verdelho (vehr-DEHlyoh) is a relative newcomer to the California wine scene. Lucky for us, Lodi’s climate suits this grape perfectly. Overflowing with scents of honeysuckle and lemon verbena, this medium-bodied, approachable wine is generous in flavors of supple apricot, tropical fruit and citrus. A crisp acidity makes this sunshiny wine the ideal partner to freshly shucked oysters or pesto pasta with asparagus and sharp goat cheese. ($19) OakFarmVineyards.com

Upstream Wines By Watts Winery 2012 Lodi Cabernet Franc Hailing from the Loire Valley of France, Cabernet Franc is a welcome addition to Lodi’s diverse portfolio of grape varieties. This unique wine opens with hints of violets, jasmine and green tea intertwined with vanilla oak. Medium acidity and tannins allow this fruity wine to be sipped alongside savory dishes like baked salmon, stuffed peppers and slowcooked beef ragout. ($20) UpStreamWines. com

“OLD GHOST”

BY KLINKER BRICK WINERY:

The stand-out, world-class wines created by several generations of Klinker Brick vintners include this old vine zinfandel that can only be described as hauntingly delicious. Each bottle of “Old Ghost” delivers a rich vintage blend, packed with brambleberry fruit aromas and exotic spices sure to wake your taste buds.

“FREAKSHOW” BY MICHAEL DAVID WINERY:

The winery’s cleverly coined “Freakshow” blend is a local favorite, and a fantastic merger of elegance and gulp-ability. This 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon comes complete with a pop of pomegranate and oak, finished with a slightly smoky flavor. In yet another quirky stroke of genius, the delicious, dense, red wine offers a smooth yet bold taste that is best paired with a great meal and good company.

It’s All in the

Name! BY MELISSA HUTSELL

“LITTLE MISSY” BY VIAGGIO

Viaggio Estate & Winery’s “Little Missy” blends freshly-picked blackberries and white peppercorn for an earthy taste that livens the palate for a classic finish. The bottle takes its name from an unusual encounter between Viaggio owners, Larry and Teri Lawrence. During a business meeting Teri told their soon to be ex business partners that they had bought a winery and plan to make their own wines. One partner slid his chair back, stood up and pointed his finger at Teri, saying, “Little Missy, you’ll never make wines!” In fall 2012, Teri made her first wine, and when deciding on a name, they chose “Little Missy” for their Estate Zin, which won Gold this year.

“7 DEADLY ZINS” BY MICHAEL DAVID WINERY:

Michael David Winery impresses us yet again, with their sinfully delicious blends just as captivating as their titles. As the name implies, this varietal is a true temptation, a local favorite, and an ode to what our region does best: Zinfandels! The 2012 “7 Deadly Zins” is an explosion of fruity-flavor, balanced with acidity and finished with a taste of blackberry and spice that appeals to the sinner in us all!

“USB PORT” FROM PELTIER STATION

This 100 percent port-style wine, made by Acampo’s Peltier Station, has made quite a name for itselfbeing featured in Martha Stewart Living and The California Wine Club. The Port eloquently swirls butterscotch, cherry and a splash of orange for a smooth, refreshing blend that pairs best when slightly cooled with sweets.

“TIEVOLI”

BY OAK FARM VINEYARDS

Made from only the finest Zinfandel grapes grown on Oak Farm’s gorgeous estate, it’s no wonder this local gem is a multi-award winner. The bottle, labeled ‘I love you’ backwards, delivers a flavor reminiscent of baked berry pie, and fresh plums, with hints of vanilla, cherry cola and butter pecan. The same is surely suiting. Well done, Oak farms.

“FLIRTATIOUS” BY MACCHIA WINES

When it comes to distinctive wine labels, Macchia Wines has got it down; “Serendipitous,” “Generous,” “Bodacious,” “Harmonious” – where do we start?! Macchia’s 2013 “Flirtatious” Zinfandel is just plain tantalizing. This old-vine blend traces its roots back to the Gold Rush era of the 1850s, and is made from the candylike zin grapes, ripened to perfection, and grown right here in our famous grapegrowing region. The playful bottle is sweet enough to liven your taste buds, and draws you in as a tasty treat.

“CRANKCASE”

BY BERGHOLD ESTATE WINERY

The estate’s handcrafted artisan wines have once again captured our taste buds. The winery’s architecture tastefully combines the old with the new, and so does each bottle of Berghold’s vast collection. The winery’s 2009 “Crankcase” is a dark, full-bodied wine with notes of cocoa, licorice and blueberries for a slightly sweet, timeless flavor.

San Joaquin is home to the largest grape growing region in the United States. As a haven for wineries and wine-lovers, our fabulous county proudly houses more than 70 wineries and tasting rooms, giving us plenty of cleverly named varietals to choose from. These bottles have made a name for themselves not only in the Central Valley, but internationally. So take your pick, or just try them all. While the titles might draw you in, it’s the flavor that keeps you comin’ back. Playful, provocative, racy or elegant…these labels are just as bold as the flavors they represent. Cheers!

“THE OTHER” BY PEIRANO ESTATE VINEYARDS

Peirano delivers yet another tasty masterpiece. Between their selections that include “The Immortal Zin” and “The Unknown,” it’s hard to choose just one - so we chose two. The winery’s “The Other,” available in both white and red varietals, express the best of each grapes’ character. The white wine option encompasses a fruity aroma of apples, pears, tropical fruit and bubble gum, complimented with coconut and vanilla for a seductive finish. A bottle of the estate-grown red is packed with flavors of black cherry, raspberry and cranberries with a spicy, toasty finish.

“STEM THEORY” BY MICHAEL KLOUDA WINES

With so many charismatic titles like “Broken Vine,” and “Shattered Zinfandel” Michael Klouda’s Lodi Appellation varietals have quickly caught the attention of San Joaquinians. Introducing stems into the fermentation process create Klouda’s “Stem Theory”, adding color and depth from the extra tannins. The wine is a clever and tasty procurement of Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, and Petite Sirah.

This certainly proves true as the restaurant delivers an exclusive and slightly experimental food and drink menu that changes with the seasons, allowing the staff to be playful while catering to their customer’s needs.   Chef Tracewell began cooking meals for his family by the age of 12. He became inspired by his greatgreat grandmother, a Native American woman, who shared with him her culture and love of food. It wasn’t long before this passion led him to the culinary world. Now as Blend’s

David’s New York Style Pizza sets standards high for those foodies keeping tabs on Stockton’s pizza game. Their famed pies draw crowds from all over the Central Valley and beyond. But beware, this pizza is beyond compare, as quite possibly the best you’ll ever experience. The topping to dough ratio is simply brilliant, as each pie is bountifully topped with gourmet ingredients and a luscious crust with just the right amount of fluff, zesty sauce and toppings. New York pizza? No thanks, we’d rather revel in the endless tastiness that is David’s Pizza. For impeccable food with an equally impressive view, look no further than the Stockton Waterfront’s French 25. The New Orleans style restaurant serves Creole food with hints of Cajun influence, all the while embracing the Central Valley’s lush produce for a Big Easy themed menu with a “California” twist.    Chef Raul Mondragon was mentored by Chef Paul Bartolotta in Chicago at the Spiaggia Restaurant. There, he was trained by the famous Chef Tony Mantuano. French 25 credits its success as a direct result of Chef Raul’s professionalism, creativity and commitment to quality. His back of the house leadership not only drives the kitchen but is an example to all employees. The Chef’s signature dishes include French 25 Jambalaya, (served as a classic with rice, or with a fettuccine pasta twist), Chicken & Waffles, “NOLA” BBQ Shrimp & Grits, and delicious Crawfish Pesto Pasta. For the oyster lovers, the staff recommends a Load-

This tangy cocktail is made with half of a Thai Chili Pepper, house tequila, Triple Sec liqueur, homemade simple syrup and fresh lime juice. To infuse the chili’s flavor, ingredients are slightly shaken and poured over the rocks, garnished with a wedge of lime and served with a salted rim for a Thai-twist.
