The fundamental problem with Aristotle’s ethical system was the good of man, which he said only politics could resolve. In this same way, the economy is busy meeting the needs of man, but through the use of resources. Therefore the attention towards sustainability is certainly positive, just like the idea of doing good is one of the best performances for managers. But are we sure this is enough? Talking about it and becoming more aware of it is definitely important, but it’s even more important to take positive steps to reach the objective. In economic systems, ethics does not seem to be an important guide on conduct, but on the other hand we are increasingly pressured on the topic of sustainability, which is the concrete application of ethics into business activities, as it forces us to look to future generations. For us, the economic aspect can only be improved with a close connection with ethics, also intended as long term programming and permanent value building.

n Piacenza, the first edition of the 2011 COLOR EXPO will take place from March 18 to 20. It is the first Italian event exclusively dedicated to the colour supply chain: finish coats, decorative coats, thermal insulation systems. You can touch the new products for 2011, participate in informational meetings dedicated to painters and retailers. The conference room inside Colorificio San

Marco’s stand will host a busy schedule of Short courses: for the technical training of painters and retailers dedicated to the new products for 2011. A portion of the stand will be completely dedicated to demonstrations of the decorative finishes from the Emozioni Veneziane line and the new Street life line with Roxidan.

he Colorificio San Marco participated in the Klimahouse 2011 Expo which was held from January 27-30 in Bolzano, Italy. The Alto Adige expo, now in its 6th edition, has become the reference trade show for the energy efficiency and sustainable building sectors. In it’s stand set up in the ANIT area (National Association for Thermal and Acoustic Insulation), the Marcon Group presented the new products for the Marcotherm external thermal insulation composite system as well as the new EPD study (Environmental Product Declaration) for San Marco products. This year the Colorificio San Marco has introduced new product innovations and system innovations with the new management system, which will be up and running shortly.

San Marco celebrates the Unification of Italy T

he Colorificio San Marco will be the “Technical Sponsor” of the Stazione Futuro Exhibit organized by the Italy Committee for the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy. The exhibit is a voyage that begins in the present and looks at the Italy of tomorrow, what it will be like, and what we would like it to be, through ideas that are already present in the territory and which will become part of our lives within the next ten years.

The future is not utopia, idealism or science fiction, but it is instead made from many small and large stories of everyday workers. The exhibit is mainly composed of ideas, prototypes, products and processes that best represent Italian creativity and innovation. They originate from public institutions, private research centres, large companies and individual inventors. The preparation, which recreates a model of an ideal City of Ideas, which corresponds to a

showcase made up of blocks of connecting cubicles where visitors can enter and exit. The path follows a fluid and non-linear narration that leaves the visitors free to learn, experiment, share and actively and creatively participate in what is not intended to be work, but a workshop-laboratory for the open and collective building of the future that awaits Italy. With its products, the Colorificio San Marco, is helping to colour this path in which the element of colour is a silent tour guide that accompa-

nies the visitors along the paths and tells the stories being narrated. The curator of the exhibit is Riccardo Luna, journalist, author, editor and director of the new Italian edition of WIRED. The preparations are the responsibility of the Luca Molinari agency, which continues its collaboration with San Marco that began with the Biennial Architectural Exhibit. Mariluce Geremia

n November 12, in the presence of the Treviso police commander, the Mayor of Treviso and the President of the Province, at the historic Palazzo dei Trecento in Treviso, 36 citizens from Treviso province who are particularly distinguished in their respective fields were honoured with the Order of Merit for the Republic of Italy, granted through a Decree by the President of the Republic. The President of the Colorificio San Marco was bestowed with the title of Knight. An award given for the social-economic contributions made on a local level. The EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a type 3 ecolabel used by companies to publicize their products’ environmental performance. The procedure to obtain this certification involves an obligatory LCA study and compliance with a series of requirements, validation by an external body and, finally, registration. The Swedish EPD system has been selected, which is internationally recognized, as it adheres to the GedNet (Global Type III Environmental Product Declarations network) circuit, which harmonises EDP programmes developed by individual countries. EPD pre-certification is awarded when the specific requirements for a certain product category have not yet been defined and the company obtaining it plays a proactive and exemplary role for the successive EPD certifications.

he Colorificio San Marco is part of the San Marco Group, a leader in the paint and coatings sector for professional construction in Italy. Product quality, qualified and reliable services, a capillary distribution network, a steady commitment to research and a culture that values ethics and responsibility are what characterize our commitment to excellence. Inspired by shared values within the company, we began a journey to evaluate the environmental impact of our products with the aim of

improving their performance. The San Marco Group began a path of reflection and careful analysis of its conduct, evaluating the entire life cycle of the product and identifying the areas of improvement that can bring about solid change. The Colorificio San Marco, true to its company policy, wanted to certify the results through Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) to demonstrate the commitment and the beginning of a journey that will involve all sectors of

The Colorificio San Marco is the first company in Italy to obtain an EPD pre-certification for paints. To obtain this ecolabel, the Colorificio San Marco had to carry out LCA studies. The LCA, Life Cycle Assessment, is a tool that systematically evaluates the environmental impact of a product through all phases of its life cycle, in-

tended as the extraction and processing of the raw materials, production, transport, use and disposal. However, the usage and disposal phases were not examined since they depend solely on the individual use and are out of Colorificio San Marco’s control. The input resources (energy, water, etc.) and the emissions to air and water were measured for each of the processes in the analysed phases in order to calculate the relative environmental impacts. The Swedish EPD requires that the following environmental indicators be calculated and expressly declared: global warming, ozone depletion, acidification, photochemical smog, acidification, eutrophication, energy content, the consumption of resources, the consumption of water, waste, the consumption of electricity during manufacturing and the emissions of toxic substances to air and water. The input resources (energy, water, etc.) and the emissions to air and water were measured. The complete documentation relating to the EPD pre-registrations for Marmorino Classico, Intonachino Minerale GF and Antica Calce are available on San Marco’s website www.sanmarcogroup.it and on the website of the administrator of the EPD system, www.environdec.com

A journey of environmental awareness The Colorificio San Marco was one of the first companies to offer water-based solutions for enamels and stains back in 1982. Since then it has continued the commitment to eliminate raw materials considered hazardous to humans and the environment. Lead, chrome, cadmium and mercury based pigments and compounds have not been used for many years; compounds classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction are also not used. The Supernatural line was created in 2005: zero VOC, solvent-free, hypo-allergenic products. The Greenspirit Line was created in 2009, which includes a series of high-tech products for bioconstruction with low environmental impact. At the beginning of 2011 three of our paints, Marmorino Classico, Antica Calce and Intonachino Minerale GF obtained EPD pre-certification, which indicates the environmental impact of their life cycles.

o be in step with the times and to meet the needs of a continuously changing market, the Marcotherm External Thermal Insulation Composite System is constantly being updated with materials, certifications and communications. The new version of the application manual was

improved with the new CE certification for the Marcotherm WF system. Newly rendered images clearly show how simple it is to use the new accessories. The new illustrations focus on construction details, providing a clear guide for both the designer and the installer.

TRAINING COURSE IN COLLABORATION WITH THE VENICE CONFEDERATION OF ARTISANS

A

gain this year the Colorificio San Marco, in collaboration with Confartigianato and the Sopraintendenza ai Beni Culturali di Venezia (Office for the Protection of Venetian Cultural Heritage), is offering training related to the territory and Venice tradition with a course dedicated to materials that characterized the history and architecture of the city: Marmorino and stuccos. The number of registrations received from the Confartigianato Venezia exceeded 100 within a few weeks of its publication. A strict selection allowed 20 candidates, chosen for their motivation and their training path, to participate in the lessons that began in February 2011. The course, which covers 100 hours, is directed towards artistic material students, architects, curators, restorers and decorators and focuses on introducing and orienting young professionals working in the delicate area of Venice, comparing traditional techniques, new materials and market needs. Technicians from the Colorificio San Marco work alongside university researchers and

technicians from the Office for the Protection of Venetian Cultural Heritage for training. With regard to the learning of traditional application techniques. This highly practical course will be taught by Master Venetian artisan Franco Fogliata, and be assisted by stucco decorator Giorgio Berto. A big portion of the course is also dedicated to the knowledge of applications using current methods and pro-

ducts, from a synergic and enrichment point of view: this section will be conducted by technicians from the Colorificio San Marco. There will also be other modules related to art history (Dr. Zucchetta), worksite safety (Arch. Girello), and restoration chemistry (Dr. Morabito) in order to help fully prepare these new professionals. Umberto Darsiè

ince 1999 the Colorificio San Marco, in collaboration with INA Assitalia, has been offering its customers the possibility of protecting their work with a 5 year insurance policy for San Marco products, or 10 years for the Marcotherm System. Confident in the quality of its products, the Colorificio San Marco has created an insurance policy system that can offer safety and serenity at a competitive price which doesn’t have a significant effect on the project costs. 179 policies were opened in 2010 and for Marcotherm alone, more than 3 million Euros worth of projects were insured. Three policies to meet any need:

Marcotherm policy: very advantageous, indicated for the Marcotherm system with a duration of 10 years. San Marco ETICS policy: 10 years of coverage for external thermal insulation composite systems made using San Marco products. Large Project policy: dedicated to all painting jobs and for guaranteeing more complex work. The first in Italy, the Colorificio San Marco has also created an insurance that covers the initial installation of external thermal insulation composite systems. This 10 year policy can be activated with a contribution of just €100 with respect to the Marcotherm policy. To present the insurance policy system offered by the Colorificio San Marco, we created the INSURANCE POLICIES folder, code 00226. he initiative began in the autumn of 2009 by Sister Elisabetta Scaglioni and became a reality through the “Amici del Togo” association. This challenging project involved the building of the “Villaggio della gioia” (Village of Joy) where orphaned children with family hardships needing care and affection are welcomed into family houses.
