Santa Cecilia Orchestra 2018-19 Season Brochure

Moving Forward! Santa Cecilia Orchestra recently celebrated its extraordinary 25-year history of achievement. We were thrilled to mark how far we have come, but we are even more excited to be moving forward into our next epoch of artistic vision! Quite simply, we are an orchestra that cannot and will not accept that there is a ceiling to what we can do, a limit to the level of excellence we can achieve, or a constraint on our capacity to bond with our community. The Daily News stated, “Santa Cecilia Orchestra is more than an orchestra” and we couldn’t agree more! We are also an educational dynamo, a cultural powerhouse, a force for family and community, and a voice for all who seek inspiration and beauty from music and the arts. We have built that vision for Santa Cecilia Orchestra through a bold and often surprising performance roster, through an education program that reaches out to schools that have limited access to music, and through a committed effort to work within the communities that we serve. This vision represents our future as well as our past. As we move forward, we have added a vital new component to our capacity to serve – The Santa Cecilia Arts & Learning Center. The Center is allowing us to expand our performance calendar with a dynamic chamber series that pours more music into our season, including a special focus on children through our Teddy Bear Concerts. It also supports a greatly expanded vision for our outreach, with programs that let you participate, make music and explore the arts. The heart of our mission will always be our goal to bring music to everyone. We will continue to strive for an excellence that the community can enjoy and that the Orchestra can build on for years to come. I hope that you will join us throughout the 2018-19 season and that SCO’s music will inspire you to make some of your own.

Sincerely,

Sonia Marie De León de Vega Founder and Director

Orchestra concert

Santa Cecilia Orchestra’s artistry is committed, heartfelt, powerful, and above all, exciting! All of those qualities will be on full display in our orchestral concert featuring the dramatic and often breathtaking music of Beethoven, Saint-Saens and Dvorak. Beethoven’s Lenore Overture No. 3 encapsulates the dramatic sequence that conveys oppression, resolve, hope, and joyous deliverance as the heroic gesture in music we associate with the composer. Next, our Saint-Saens virtuosic display in “Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso” offers a special treat — Yi-Huan Zhao, doing double duty as concertmaster and soloist for the performance. The concert concludes with Dvorak’s epic “New World Symphony,” one of the most powerful of all symphonies. Conductor Sonia Marie De León de Vega leads SCO in this masterpiece that embodies the American spirit!

Viennese Giant L. Beethoven: Quartet No.10 Op.74 “Harp” F. Schubert: Quartet No.14 D.810 “Death and the Maiden” March 9, 2019 Saturday, 8pm We have designed an evening devoted to the creativity of two great classical masters. Melodic, romantic, intensely personal, fervent, dreamy, fierce, drama… it must be Beethoven! Our program begins with Beethoven’s quartet nicknamed the “Harp,” one of the most emotional pieces that the artist ever composed. We close with Franz Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden,” which has been called “one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire.” It was written in 1824 after the composer suffered a serious illness and realized that he was dying. The name refers to the theme of the second movement, which Schubert took from a song he wrote in 1817 of the same title. Venue:The Santa Cecilia Arts & Learning Center

Santa Cecilia Arts &Learning Center

For more than two decades, Santa Cecilia Orchestra has been providing exceptional performances and education programs that are both affordable and accessible to communities throughout Los Angeles. We’ve touched the lives of more than 200,000 children and youth and welcomed thousands of families to our concerts. Serving you is a privilege that we don’t take lightly. Now, the Santa Cecilia Arts &Learning Center is taking our work to a new, unprecedented level. The Center has become the Orchestra’s home. A place where we can expand our current programs and build new ones. A place where we can strengthen our connections and commitment to the many communities we serve. A refuge where young people are encouraged and nurtured as they learn to navigate conflicts without violence and where they grow their skills as musicians. Explore the opportunities the Center offers for every age from toddlers to seniors.

Te d d y B e a r C o n c e r t s They’re back! Since initiating our Teddy Bear series, each concert has sold out. Don’t be left out this year. These performances are specially designed for toddlers and young children as an engaging introduction to the instruments of the orchestra. This year we will present six concerts for your family to meet our orchestra family. Bring your favorite stuffed animal to these delightful performances that demonstrate how sounds, melodies, rhythms, and instruments can bring music to life. Kids and stuffed animals alike will enjoy discovering brass, strings or woodwinds – or better yet, all three! We invite the family to enjoy a complimentary milk and cookies reception after the concert. And we encourage you to bring a sack lunch for your own teddy bear picnic on our grounds before or after the concert. Teddy Bears admitted free.

Discovering Music

Discovering Music is the Orchestra’s award-winning educational program that has reached more than 200,000 children in 80 schools in Los Angeles. The initiative is really a series of programs that bring the beauty and power of classical music to students at every level. The founding program offers elementary school children maximum exposure and access to music, providing one orchestra musician per classroom for every classroom in the school, assuring every child direct and personal contact with the musicians. The musicians’ willingness to share their experiences with music so freely invites a dynamic exchange with the children, who find a fascinating medium through which to explore their own potential. Throughout a school year we offer more than 1,000 individual and chamber performances in schools!

String Program

Our String Program consists of weekly one-hour group lessons on violin, viola or cello throughout the school year. The lessons take place during school hours to augment the regular curriculum and are taught by specially trained string instructors with extensive professional experience in music. Each year culminates in a performance for peers, families and the community.

Mentorship

Our Mentorship Program for middle and senior high school students includes exposure to a full range of instruments including all strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. The program was designed to help students who already play musical instruments with improving their technique and musicianship. Every program in Discovering Music is free of a charge to the schools, children and families participating. Help us continue this vital work by supporting Santa Cecilia Orchestra. Music Is for Everyone One hour prior to every concert, Santa Cecilia Orchestra invites the audience to experience music by making music, we provide an array of instruments from each of the orchestra families – strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. Adults and children are welcome to try their first instrument, try a new instrument, experiment and have fun. You will never listen to a master performance the same way again!

Música del Pubelo Música del Pueblo (Music of the Community) is our adult education program (18 and over) that comprises group music workshops and performances for beginning musicians, amateur musicians and retired musicians. The community musicians are coached on their instruments in workshops led by the professional musicians of Santa Cecilia Orchestra. The workshops focus on improving technique, learning new music and ensemble playing. Participants share musical ideas, rehearse together and play in a performance for the community. Música del Pueblo welcomes all string, woodwind and brass instruments. Program Dates: Throughout the year.
