Water Music

Celebrating the 100 Year Anniversary of the Los Angeles Aqueduct

Gluck: Gluck: Gluck: Handel: Beethoven:

Orfeo ed Euridice Overture Dance of the Blessed Spirits Dance of The Furies Water Music Suite Symphony No. 5 Sonia Marie De León de Vega, conductor

The Los Angeles City Council officially declared 2013 the “Year of the Los Angeles Aqueduct.” Today, Santa Cecilia Orchestra is proud to join this celebration marking 100 years of continuous operation of William Mulholland’s great engineering achievement, which brings water to Los Angeles from the Owens Valley, 233 miles away. The concert begins with a delightful group of pieces from Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice. From there, we dive right in with Handel’s Water Music Suite. Handel wrote Water Music in 1717 to accompany water festivities on the Thames. Arguably the most popular piece of Baroque music today, Water Music is memorably tuneful and makes fashionable use of the dance forms popular in that day, combining festivity and finesse. We end our Aqueduct celebration with Beethoven’s immortal Symphony No. 5. Beethoven’s fateful 5th Symphony – with its famous Victory motif and astonishing power– provides a suitably triumphant finale to this momentous occasion. The Los Angeles Aqueduct Centennial on November 5, 2013 marks 100 years to the day when a crowd of 40,000 gathered at the northeast end of the San Fernando Valley to witness the first flow of water down the Cascades and to hear William Mulholland’s immortal words: “There it is. Take it.”

Mozart:

Don Giovanni Overture Arias by Mozart, Verdi, Bizet and Gounod Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 “Eroica” (Heroic) Cedric Berry, Bass Baritone Sonia Marie De León de Vega, conductor

We begin our program by welcoming the artistry of Cedric Berry, bass-baritone, who will perform some of opera’s greatest arias from Don Giovanni, Macbeth, Carmen and Faust. We then turn to the Beethoven of revolutionary, groundbreaking statements with his mighty Eroica (Heroic) Symphony, possibly the most important symphony ever written. Beethoven originally dedicated the piece to Napoleon Bonaparte, and the music took its inspiration from the seeds of revolution. But after Napoleon crowned himself Emperor, Beethoven became disillusioned and scratched out the dedication. His symphony, however, remains a groundbreaking and heroic work that helped define the romantic era. Hear this energetic and powerful work performed live by Santa Cecilia Orchestra.

“The majestic beauty of the orchestra is amazing. The concert brought me to tears of joy.” First time audience member

Play Feel Touch Experience

Music is for Everyone! One hour prior to every concert, Santa Cecilia Orchestra invites the audience to experience music by making music. We provide an array of instruments from each of the orchestra families - strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. Adults and children are welcome to try their first instrument, try a new instrument, experiment and have fun. You will never listen to a master performance the same way again!

“I believe that if you put an instrument in a child’s hands that you will introduce beauty and endless possibilities. Put beauty in a child’s life and there will not be room for anything else that is not beauty.” Sonia Marie De León de Vega Founder

Discovering Music Discovering Music is the orchestra’s award winning educational program that has reached more than 150,000 children in 48 schools in Los Angeles. The program offers children maximum exposure and access to music, providing one orchestra musician per classroom for every classroom in the school, assuring every child direct and personal contact with the musicians. The musicians’ willingness to share their experiences with music so freely invites a dynamic exchange with the children, who find a fascinating medium through which to explore their own potential. Throughout a school year we offer more than 1,000 individual and chamber performances in classrooms!

String Program

Our free String Program consists of weekly one-hour group lessons on violin, viola or cello throughout the school year. The lessons take place during school hours to augment the regular curriculum and are taught by specially trained string instructors with extensive professional experience in music. Each year culminates in a performance for peers, families and the community.

Mentorship

Our mentorship program for middle and senior high school students – the most recent addition to Discovering Music – includes exposure to a full range of instruments including all strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. The program was designed to help students who already play musical instruments with improving their technique and musicianship. Every program in Discovering Music is free of a charge to the schools, children and families participating. Help us continue our work by supporting Santa Cecilia Orchestra. Become a donor today!
