2016-2017

Santa Cecilia Orchestra

The Los Angeles Daily News said it best: “Santa Cecilia Orchestra is more than an orchestra.

From our earliest days Santa Cecilia Orchestra has looked for ways to act as a cultural resource for the entire community, reaching out to include people of all ages in the discovery of the beauty and power of music. We now have the most diverse and enthusiastic audience in Los Angeles and our success is defined by you.

2016-17 Season We continue our commitment to the community in the current year with a roster filled with magnificent music and programs both new and old that will delight everyone. And our new Santa Cecilia Arts and Learning Center is greatly enhancing our capacity to create new venues for our vision. Inside these pages you will find: • A stunning Orchestral perfomance at Thorne Hall. • Our popular new chamber series that completely sold out last year. We think this year’s concerts are even better.

• Our Teddy Bear Concert! This special performance for our very youngest audience members was another sell out. So, this year we are offering more opportunities for these budding classical music fans to share our music with their favorite stuffed friends. • Discovering Music, our hugely successful educational program for children and teens. • A new program especially for the adults in the community who want to learn and play an instrument.

• A summer arts day camp for kids that offers exposure to all the arts – music, dance, painting, theatre and more. We can’t wait to welcome a new season of campers in 2017. In short, this year brings more music and more programs to more people. Keep reading for information on how you and your family can be a part of it all. And check our website periodically, as we add concerts and events through the year. Don’t be left out. Subscribe today . . . for the music, for the fun, for the experience! I’ll see you there! Chamber Music at the Center

In “An American Portrait” you can experience America through the eyes and heart of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak. The String Quartet in F major is known as the “American” not only because it was composed here but also because it contains elements typical of original AfricanAmerican and Native American music.

An American Portrait

Program String Quartet in b minor, Op.11 S. Barber String Quartet F major op. 96 (American Quartet) A. Dvorak

Barber’s string quartet is the source of the famous Adagio for Strings, popularized by the movie Platoon in its later arrangement for full string orchestra. It makes an even more powerful impression in its original context. Adagio for Strings is one of the most solemn and evocative pieces of American music and is often enlisted for times of great emotional stress. This hauntingly beautiful, emotional piece will stay with you well beyond the concert.

They’re back! Last year’s Teddy Bear Concert was a huge success with every seat taken. So, this year we added more concerts to make sure all of the young people in our audience have a chance to see and hear our musicians and their instruments. We have scheduled four Teddy Bear Concerts for your family to meet our orchestra family. Bring your children and their favorite stuffed friends to these delightful

concerts that demonstrate how sounds, melodies, rhythms, and instruments can bring music to life. Kids and stuffed animals alike will have an opportunity to discover the orchestra’s strings or woodwinds . . . or both! We will provide a complimentary Milk and Cookies Reception after the concert. And you are invited to bring a sack lunch for your own teddy bear picnic before or after the concert on our grounds.

Discovering Music

String Program

Mentorship

Discovering Music is the Orchestra’s award-winning educational program that has reached more than 190,000 children in 70 schools in Los Angeles. The initiative is really a series of programs that bring the beauty and power of classical music to students at every level.

in the school, assuring every child direct and personal contact with the musicians. The musicians’ willingness to share their experiences with music so freely invites a dynamic exchange with the children, who find a fascinating medium through which to explore their own potential.

Our String Program consists of weekly one-hour group lessons on violin, viola or cello throughout the school year.

The founding program offers elementary school children maximum exposure and access to music, providing one orchestra musician per classroom for every classroom

Throughout a school year we offer more than 1,000 individual and chamber performances in classrooms!

The lessons are taught by specially trained string instructors with extensive professional experience in music. Each year culminates in a performance for peers, families and the community.

Our mentorship program for middle and senior high school students includes

Music is for Everyone

exposure to a full range of instruments including all strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion.

One hour prior to each concert performed at Thorne Hall, Santa Cecilia Orchestra invites the audience to experience

The program was designed to help students who already play musical instruments improve their technique and musicianship.

music by making music. We provide the instruments – an array from each of the orchestra families: strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. You will never listen to a master performance the same way again!

Every program in Discovering Music is free of a charge to the schools, children and families participating. Help us continue this vital work by supporting Santa Cecilia Orchestra. Please include a donation with your order or donate at our website scorchestra.org.

Adults and children are welcome to try their first instrument, try a new instrument, experiment and have fun.

One of our professional musicians at each music station will help you master the basics to produce a note, a bar or a full melody on the instrument of your choice.

ummer Arts Camp S

anta Cecilia Orchestra is proud to present our Summer Arts Camp 2017! The arts play an important role in the healthy development of self-esteem, confidence and intellectual curiosity, all of which play a pivotal role in stellar academic performance at any grade level. This past year SCO launched its own Summer Arts Camp, a day camp where kids enjoy a week filled with creative activities that focus on discovering the power of the arts. Summer Arts Camp is designed to help students explore their creativity and self-expression, and to develop their appreciation of the arts. Activities are led by teaching artists. Students rotate through five activities each day where they play

musical instruments, sing, dance, draw, paint and more. In addition, the camp includes a daily performance by SCO musicians. Our Summer Arts Camp is inspiring and empowering for the students. But most of all, it’s fun! The camps take place at the Santa Cecilia Arts and Leaning Center. Our beautiful buildings are in a secure gated facility with garden courtyard, backyard and ample parking. We have activities for campers ages 6-12. Each camp session runs for five days, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (half days are also available).
