It’s much the same for our concert seasons – my favorite is always the season we are preparing for or performing. So welcome to my new favorite season! I am thrilled to share the beauty, the excitement and the drama of Santa Cecilia Orchestra’s music with you. In 2019-2020 we offer magnificent music, extraordinary concerts, brilliant musicians, enlightening educational programs, and fantastic artistic experiences for you, your family, your friends and the community. Our selections promise a rich tapestry of sonic delights that will color your world with music, including one of the most popular and eagerly anticipated performers ever to share a stage with Santa Cecilia Orchestra – Flamenco artist Maria Bermudez performing in Manuel De Falla’s “El Amor Brujo.” You can hear our chamber concerts at the Santa Cecilia Arts &Learning Center and our orchestra concerts in Thorne Hall at Occidental College. Children and teens can enjoy our educational programs both in school and at the center, while adults can participate in creative activities at the center. And everyone is invited to have fun at our pre-concert program outside of Thorne Hall. Come and experience the 2019-2020 season with us. Enroll in our programs and subscribe today! Bach, Mozart and Beethoven; and Dvorak’s stunning “Song to the Moon.” We promise a performance that is out of this world!
Journey “There is hot, and then there is blistering! White-hot passion coalesced with flying feet and fluttering fringe! Bermudez set the stage on fire!” - Los Angeles Times
November 10, 2019, Sunday, 4:00pm Venue : Occidental College, Thorne Hall Gluck Dance of the Furies from “Orfeo ed Euridice” Mendelssohn Symphony No. 4 in A Major Op. 90 “Italian” De Falla “El Amor Brujo” This musical journey will introduce you to great masterpieces and take you to distant lands, to different times and finally, deep into the heart of Flamenco. Our trip begins with the virtuosity of Gluck’s Dance of the Furies. From there, Santa Cecilia Orchestra’s musicians take you to Italy with Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony, a romantic masterpiece sketched during the composer’s tour of Europe. According to Mendelssohn, this beautiful piece is meant to capture the supreme joy of life in Italy – a sentiment that is undeniably felt from the first moment of the symphony to the last. Finally, our journey travels from Italy to Spain and straight into the passion of Manuel De Falla. You will experience this thrilling artist’s finest music through the fiery artistry of Spain’s premier flamenco artist, Maria Bermudez. Our guest performer comes direct from Jerez de la Frontera, the “cradle of flamenco.” It’s a musical experience not to be missed!

The popcorn’s on us!
February 9, 2020, Sunday, 4:00pm Venue : Occidental College, Thorne Hall Vivaldi Albinoni Bach
Concerto Grosso Adagio for Strings Brandenburg Concerto No. 4
Luminous music dazzles, shines and radiates pure joy and emotions. Our concert embodies this conceit, beginning with the virtuosity of Vivaldi’s Concerto Grosso and followed by Albinoni’s haunting “Adagio” from the series “The Assassination of Gianni Versace.” The Albinoni is a beloved work that has been used in dozens of films, television shows and pop songs. Next, Concertmaster Yi-Huan Zhao and flutes Salpy Kerkonain and Karin Hoesli take center stage as soloists in J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4, weaving a tapestry of musical colors.
Piazzolla Guerra Holst
Oblivion and Libertango A la Antigua St. Paul’s Suite
The program concludes with one of Holst’s most remembered works for strings: St. Paul’s Suite. The style reflects the craftsmanship of Holst’s transformation of simple English folk tunes into powerful symphonic settings. The Suite deeply evokes the spirit of England through its folk melodies and a finale that interweaves The Dargason with Greensleeves. These are tuneful, highly imaginative pieces.
S
pring with Brahms
March 28, 2020, Saturday, 8:00pm Venue : Santa Cecilia Arts & Learning Center Haydn Brahms
String Quartet No.35 “Lark” Op.64 no.5 String Quartet No.2 a minor Op.51
Our spring concert opens with the Lark Quartet by Haydn, who is known as the Father of the String Quartet, as the tradition of the genre is thought to have started in his hands. The avian nickname of the famous “lark” quartet comes from the unforgettable winged melody high on the violin’s E string, played as a soaring descant to the staccato march for the lower three instruments. This irresistible music is full of wonderful surprises and melodies. It’s a perfect welcome to spring.
The program closes with Brahms’ masterwork, a serious, uncompromising piece that everywhere bears his immediately identifiable language, rich in poignant harmonic suspensions, rhythmic displacements, nervous passion, and melting lyricism.

Discovering Music Discovering Music is the Orchestra’s award-winning educational program that has reached more than 200,000 children in 80 schools in Los Angeles. The initiative is really a series of programs that bring the beauty and power of classical music to students at every level. The founding program offers elementary school children maximum exposure and access to music, providing one orchestra musician per classroom for every classroom in the school, assuring every child direct and personal contact with the musicians. The musicians’ willingness to share their experiences with music so freely invites a dynamic exchange with the children, who find a fascinating medium through which to explore their own potential. Throughout a school year we offer more than 1,000 individual and chamber performances in classrooms!
String Program Our String Program consists of weekly one-hour group lessons on violin throughout the school year. The lessons take place during school hours to augment the regular curriculum and are taught by specially trained string instructors with extensive professional experience in music. Each year culminates in a performance for peers, families and the community.
Mentorship Our mentorship program for middle and high school students includes exposure to a full range of instruments including all strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. The program was designed to help students who already play musical instruments with improving their technique and musicianship. Every program in Discovering Music is free of a charge to the schools, children and families participating. Help us continue this vital work by supporting Santa Cecilia Orchestra.
