CARMEN SUITE November 8 - 9, 2019, 7:30 p.m., Santa Fe College Fine Arts Hall This historic performance will mark the first time that Alberto Alonso's Carmen Suite has been performed with a live orchestra in the U.S. since 1974, when Alicia Alonso performed in the starring role with the American Ballet Theatre. After the 1967 premiere of the original ballet Carmen Suite, performed by prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, and choreographed by the legendary Alberto Alonso, the ballet spread in popularity and was performed on stages all over the world. Mr. Alonso was asked to restage this historically significant ballet in Spain, Mexico, Japan, Milan, Argentina, Bulgaria, Berlin and Cuba. Many of the most famous ballerinas of our time have performed the title role. Dancers like Julio Bocca, Alexander Goudonov, Alicia Alonso, Maya Plisetskaya, Alessandra Ferre and Sylvie Guillem are a few names among many who have been honored to perform in such a time-honored ballet. There are only three American ballet companies that have this original masterpiece in their repertoire - American Ballet Theatre, Indiana Dance Theatre and the Sarasota Ballet.
Mr. Alonso and his wife Sonia expatriated from Cuba and moved to Gainesville, Florida in 1993. They spent 18 years teaching in the Dance Program at SF, choreographing new works and inspiring hundreds of talented college dancers on the SF campus. November 8 and 9, 2019, Sonia Calero-Alonso, Alberto Alonso’s wife, will work with two luminaries in the dance world, American Ballet Theatre principal dancers Sarah Lane and Cory Stearns, American Ballet Theatre member, Luis Ribagorda and members of the New York Dance Project, to showcase Mr. Alonso’s ballet, Carmen Suite, on his American home campus of Santa Fe College. Santa Fe College proudly welcomes this ballet to be presented for two masterful performances, accompanied live by the Gainesville Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Evans Haile.

WHY GIVE TO THE SF FINE ARTS PROGRAM? Private funding provides Santa Fe College the ability to create great opportunities for our students to work with world-class artists. While faculty, staff and basic equipment needs are funded by state appropriation, we rely on your generosity to take our fine arts programs to the next level. Through the Master Artist Series and instructional enhancement funding, our faculty are able to deliver world-class professional, meaningful production and performance experiences to our students.
HOW DOES MY DONATION HELP? When you partner with the Fine Arts Program at Santa Fe College, you provide the opportunity for our faculty and staff to deliver world-class entertainment to our community while providing access to expanded world-class educational experiences for our students. Your donation helps in two important ways: First, it provides the opportunity for Santa Fe College to bring in guest artists through the Master Artist Series. By funding the Master Artist Series, these guest artists inspire and transform their art beyond the show which enables our students to experience the entire performance from auditions to curtain call. Second, your donation also helps support purchasing costumes, backdrops and other special equipment, not currently funded by the state, but critical to the student experience. Please consider making a donation to the Santa Fe College Fine Arts Program and help us maintain the opportunities and hands-on instruction we provide to our students.
