WELCOME!

Welcome to the 2024-2025 season of the arts at Santa Fe College. Students and faculty in SF's Visual Art, Dance, Music and Theatre departments are proud to offer this season's performances in the Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall, the Lyceum Concert Hall and exhibits in the Santa Fe College Art Gallery and other galleries across the college. We also invite you to join us for our SF Visiting Artist Series, featuring artists from across the community, region and world who perform and engage with our students, both behind the scenes and collaboratively in live performances.

Each year SF students work with passion and skill to share professional-level music, visual art, dance and theatre with our community. Celebrate our students, faculty and visiting artists with us through our dynamic and innovative cultural programming that entertains, educates and delights audiences of all ages.

FLUXUS IN THE SWAMP

Curated by Billie J. Maciunas, Ph.D., and Sean Miller

In 2010 and 2014, Fluxus artist Benjamin Patterson referred to his tours through Florida and Georgia as “Fluxus in the Swamps.” This exhibition examining the legacy of Fluxus and the spirit of Fluxus in Florida. Fluxus performer and author Billie J. Maciunas, Ph.D., and artist and UF associate professor Sean Miller present new and classic Fluxus pieces and works by artists inspired by Fluxus.

Exhibition includes: AY-O, Björk, George Brecht, Craig Coleman, Philip Corner, Chiaozza, Roz Crews, Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt, Robert Fillou, Ken Friedman, Guerilla Girls, Bibbe Hansen, Edgar Heap of Birds, Geoff and Bici Hendricks, Jenny Holzer, Connie Hwang, Alison Knowles, Jess Larson, George Maciunas, Jack Massing, Sean Miller, Yoko Ono, Benjamin Patterson, Tom Sachs, Takako Saito, Mieko Shiomi, Ben Vautier, Robert Watts, Mark Mothersbaugh and Beatie Wolfe, and Andrew Yang.

THE WIRE BIRDS

September 13, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

The Wire Birds are a folk group performing original songs with close harmonies and a string quintet. Musical influences include country, blues, jazz, traditional folk music, and classical chamber music. They have been performing together for two years and have completed two albums of original compositions. Their first album, The Wire Birds Volume 1, was released on Painted Lady Records, and is available on streaming platforms.

The Wire Birds are:

Dan Stepp - vocals and guitar, Emma Rynear - vocals, Gabi Shapiro - bass, Dan Hardwickcello, Cate Hancock - viola, Andre Cox - violin, and Lauren Roberts - violin.

WINDS & CLASSICS

Winds & Classics will showcase the Santa Fe Winds, who will perform mature classical works by some of the most prolific composers from the 19th and 20th centuries. Modern selections will also be included from composers of the present. Directed by Dr. David Smith, Associate Professor of Music.

NO EXIT

ADAPTED FROM THE FRENCH BY PAUL BOWLES

October 16-17, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

Is hell really other people? That’s the thought-provoking question at the center of Jean Paul Sartre’s No Exit. Three people, forced to spend eternity with each other, contemplate their fates and the consequences of their earthly actions in this production that examines the very meaning of our existence. What if we were forced to see ourselves as others see us? No Exit is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. (www.concordtheatricals.com). Directed by Russell Schultz, Associate Professor of Theatre.

DOUG VARONE AND DANCERS

November 1, 2024, 8 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

For 30 years, Doug Varone and Dancers has devoted itself to the humanity and virtuosity of dance, reaching out to audiences well beyond the proscenium arch. Considered one of the most respected dance companies working today, DOVA has created an expansive legacy encompassing dance, theatre, opera and film – establishing an impressive body of work. YOUNG DANCERS SHOWCASE

November 2, 2024, 8 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

Dance Theatre of Santa Fe will perform alongside the University of Florida and young dancers from across the state of Florida. This showcase performance is part of the Young Dancer Workshop of North Central Florida. For more information, visit youngdancerworkshop.com. VISUAL ARTS FACULTY EXHIBITION

The Annual Visual Arts Faculty Exhibition features the work of the Santa Fe College visual art faculty. This exhibit features mediums ranging from painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking and photography.

MUSIC VARIETY CONCERT

November 13, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

March 5, 2025, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

This lively performance will showcase the solo and group work of our SF guitarists, instrumentalists and vocalists, who will perform a variety of classical and contemporary selections for audiences of all ages. Directed by Dr. Edward White, Assistant Professor of Music.

AN EVENING OF JAZZ

November 15, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

An Evening of Jazz will showcase our Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo who will perform selections by some of the most important musicians and composers in the history of jazz. Musical styles to be selected from include Swing, Bossa Nova, Latin, Bebop, and the Blues. Directed by Dr. David Smith, Associate Professor of Music.

SONGS OF THE SEASON

November 22, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

The Santa Fe College Singers, under the direction of Mitch Rorick and Wendy Gunther, Adjunct Assistant Professors of Music, will perform holiday favorites from different decades and styles including classical, jazz, pop, and gospel. They will be joined by the Gainesville Youth Chorus.

HOLIDAY AT SANTA FE

December 7, 2024, 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

SF Performing Arts, SF Teaching Zoo, SF Planetarium and SF Little School collaborate to bring a thrilling performance to young and adult imaginations alike. Come watch Perry the mouse and Santa Claus himself journey through the forest to make it snow in the Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall! Enjoy familiar Holiday music during this audience interactive and educational performance, followed by a meet and greet with the animals in the lobby! Directed by Melissa Brenner, Assistant Professor of Dance.

TEN-MINUTE PLAYS

Looking for a reason to see live theatre this January? The theatre program at Santa Fe College is proud to present an evening of short plays directed and performed by Santa Fe College students under the coordination of Russell Schultz, Associate Professor of Theatre.

EDWARD WHITE QUARTET

February 7, 2025, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

The Edward White Quartet offers a unique and unforgettable experience for jazz enthusiasts of all levels. Led by guitarist and composer Edward White, the quartet seamlessly blends traditional jazz elements with contemporary influences, creating a sound that is both familiar and fresh. Join them for an evening of musical exploration and discovery.

MOLLY KEMPSON

Opening Reception: February 7, 2025, 7-9 p.m., SF Art Gallery

On Exhibit: February 7 - March 21, 2025, SF Art Gallery

Molly Kempson is an artist and educator making relief prints in and about the American South. Her work spirals through architecture, language, flora, fauna, preservation, and conservation to highlight the complicated history of the region through artist's books, letterpress posters, and limited-edition reduction linocut prints. She has been awarded several funded residencies, including the Coffey Residency in Book Arts at the University of Florida in 2016, the letterpress residency at Ashantilly Press in 2018, and is an In Cahoots artist-in-residence for 2024 in Petaluma, California.

In this solo show of works from 2018-2025, Kempson's work explores the intersection of traditional block printing and type-setting techniques with the current landscape of wildlife conservation, historic preservation, and southern identity and history. Her works also address the importance of public support for the arts as a catalyst for addressing the issues that face Floridians as we face our past, present, and future.

VALENTINE'S SWING DANCE

February 14, 2025, 6:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall Lobby

Bringing big band jazz to the dance halls of Santa Fe, we invite you to come out and enjoy the sounds of 1920's & 1930’s swing jazz by the SF Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo. This semi-formal event will also include light appetizers, and free swing dance instruction. Directed by Dr. David Smith, Associate Professor of Music.

WINDS GO POP

February 20, 2025, 7:30 p.m., Lyceum Concert Hall

Winds Go Pop will showcase the Santa Fe Winds who will perform some of the most popular songs in American history. Selections will include popular dance grooves to some of the most memorable songs in cinematic history. Directed by Dr. David Smith, Associate Professor of Music.

JAZZ UP SPRING!

March 7, 2025, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month in April, the SF Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo will perform selections originally written and performed by the trailblazers of jazz. In addition, we will celebrate the birthday of composer and band leader Duke Ellington by performing some of his signature compositions. Directed by Dr. David Smith, Associate Professor of Music.

SING INTO SPRING

Springtime at the Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall is best celebrated with a varied choral concert, with different types of music from different eras. Directed by Mitch Rorick and Wendy Gunther, Adjunct Assistant Professors of Music.

ELEMENTS OF STYLE

April 4-5, 2025, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

Dance Theatre of Santa Fe presents their annual concert showcasing the variety of dance styles taught in the SF dance program. Directed by Melissa Brenner, Assistant Professor of Dance, Elements of Style will feature guest artist premieres, with more works by adjunct dance faculty: Jessie Dominguez, Mohamed DaCosta, Calypso May, and Herman Ramos.

SPRING ARTS FESTIVAL

April 12, 2025, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Santa Fe College Northwest Campus

April 13, 2025, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Santa Fe College Northwest Campus

This two-day festival includes experiences that everyone can enjoy, including local music and art, kid zones, food trucks and more! During the festival, you are also welcome to attend the Kika Silva Pla Planetarium, Teaching Zoo and Museum of Earth Sciences.

STUDENT ART SHOW

Opening Reception: April 18, 2025, 7-9 p.m., SF Art Gallery

On Exhibit: April 18 - May 2, 2025, SF Art Gallery

The Annual Student Art Show is the yearly showcase of Santa Fe College student artwork. This juried exhibit features work made for or in class from the various subjects taught in the Visual Arts program. This includes painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking and photography. A guest juror from the community will select pieces for awards that are presented at a ceremony at the opening reception.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM

April 18,19, 25 and 26, 2025 , 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

Santa Fe Fine Arts cordially invites you to join us as we celebrate the genius and beauty of William Shakespeare's much-beloved play, A Midsummer Night's Dream. From the spirited rivalry between Oberon and Titania, to the hilarious romantic mishaps that befall the young lovers Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius and Helena, (not to mention the spell-induced love affair between Titania and a donkey) A Midsummer Night's Dream has delighted and fascinated audiences since its first performance in 1595. The play even features a play-within- the-play, a hilarious parody of the myth of Pyramus and Thisbe, played by a troupe of well-meaning, rustic tradesmen to celebrate multiple weddings! This upcoming production, combining dance, live music, comedy and romance, will be the first full-length production of a Shakespeare play on the Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall stage. Don't miss out on the fun and wonder of this classic play by the Bard! Directed by Matthew Lindsay, Assistant Professor of Theatre.

ROOM TO DANCE

June 13-14, 2025, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

Dance Theatre of Santa Fe presents their annual student-choreographed season finale. Come and see the dancers enthusiastically perform their favorite styles choreographed through their own voices. This audience favorite will end with a lively question and answer session with the student choreographers. Coordinated by Melissa Brenner, Assistant Professor of Dance.

The journey begins with Wagner's thrilling “The Flying Dutchman," and Tan Dun’s multi-dimensional “Paper Concerto." Tan Dun has wowed our audience with his “Water Concerto," and audiences around the world with his film scores including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Immerse yourself in a musical and visual feast. This premiere concert of the season finishes with Liszt’s thrilling “Les Préludes.”

Filled with orchestral fireworks, Stravinsky’s beloved “The Firebird” is the story of Prince Ivan, the evil magician Koschei and the magical Firebird. It is paired with Ravel’s delicious and lush “Mother Goose Suite.”

An epic journey through one of the most powerful and romantic symphonies ever written. Composed in celebration of Mahler meeting his wife, the amazing Alma Schindler. The fifth symphony includes the popular “Adagietto” used in Visconti’s film Death in Venice and is a heroic voyage of life. As Mahler said, “A symphony must be like the world, it must contain everything.”
