WELCOME!

Welcome to the 2023-2024 season of the arts at Santa Fe College. Students and faculty in SF's Art, Dance, Music and Theatre departments are proud to offer this season's performances in the Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall, the Lyceum Concert Hall and exhibits in the Santa Fe College Art Gallery and other galleries across the college. There is also the SF Master Artist Series where world-renowned artists come to perform and engage with the students, both behind the scenes and sometimes collaboratively in live performances.

Each year SF students work tirelessly to provide the community professional-level entertainment from our music, dance and theatre ensembles. Celebrate with us the journey that we have traveled as we feature our faculty and students alongside world-renowned artists, establishing SF as a community destination for quality cultural programming which entertains, educates and delights audiences of all ages.

CHRIS TEASLEY

PROG MAPS AND SOFT HEXES

Opening Reception: September 8, 2023, 7-9 p.m., Santa Fe College Art Gallery

On Exhibit: September 8 - October 27, 2023, Santa Fe College Art Gallery

Chris Teasley's work is fueled by a combination of deep interest in the history of painting and his personal connection with paint as a medium for expression. This distinctive exhibition will feature recent, large-scale paintings constructed with a process unique to the artist. Teasley seeks to present paintings that contain all of the elements of a traditional still-life work, without attaching images and ideas to the viewer. Teasley allows room for viewers to define and discover their own conclusions in these works.

THE RODNEY MARSALIS PHILADELPHIA BIG BRASS

September 15, 2023, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

The Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass is a family owned and operated business that had its beginnings on the streets of New Orleans. On the advice of family patriarch Ellis Marsalis, the group created a concert format that breaks the usual barriers between genres and strives to create a connection between the audience and performers.

WINDS & CLASSICS

October 5, 2023, 7:30 p.m., Lyceum Concert Hall

April 4, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Lyceum Concert Hall

Winds & Classics will showcase our Concert Band who will perform mature classical works by some of the most prolific composers from the 19th and 20th centuries. Modern selections will also be included from composers of the present. Directed by Dr. David Smith.

THE MUSKETEERS! BY JON JORY

October 13-14, 2023, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

When a small acting company eliminates one musketeer from their production of The Three Musketeers due to budget constraints, the rest of the cast must sally forth bravely with only two. The classic tale of d'Artagnan and his sword-fighting friends is presented by a hilariously self-aware cast of six, with romance, wit and derring-do to spare. This high-comedy adaptation is a witty send-up of Alexandre Dumas' beloved adventure. Directed by Matthew Lindsay.

The Limón Dance Company (LDC) has been at the vanguard of dance since its inception in 1946. José Limón has a special place in American culture for a social awareness that transcends distinct groups to address how we all search for commonality. It is with this ethos that we continue to commission works by critically acclaimed and emerging international voices fifty years after Limón’s passing. His works continue to influence the evolution of the art form with their arresting visual clarity, theatricality and rhythmic and musical life. YOUNG DANCERS SHOWCASE

October 27-28, 2023, 8 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall Santa Fe College and the University of Florida dance for two nights. These evening performances are part of the Young Dancer Workshop of North Central Florida. For more information, visit www.youngdancerworkshop.com.

CHAMBER MUSIC RECITAL

November 1, 2023, 7:30 p.m., Lyceum Concert Hall

Audience members will be treated to an enchanting evening of music. Under the direction of Maurya Dickerson, the recital will include performances by musical groups comprised of Santa Fe College students.

AN EVENING OF JAZZ

Arts Hall

An Evening of Jazz will showcase our Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo who will perform selections by some of the most important musicians and composers in the history of jazz. Selections will be chosen from the following styles: Swing, Bossa Nova, Latin, Bebop and Blues. Directed by Dr. David Smith.

SONGS OF THE SEASON

November 17, 2023, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

The Santa Fe College Singers, co-directed by Mitch Rorick and April Basiletti, will perform holiday favorites from different decades and styles including classical, jazz, pop and gospel, accompanied by SF piano professor Mitch McKay and the Santa Fe College Big Band, directed by Dr. David Smith.

HOLIDAY AT SANTA FE

December 2, 2023, 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine

Arts Hall

SF Performing Arts, SF Teaching Zoo, SF Planetarium and SF Little School collaborate to bring a thrilling performance to young and adult imaginations alike. Come watch Perry the Mouse and Santa Claus himself journey through the forest to make it snow in the Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall! Enjoy familiar holiday music during this interactive and educational performance, followed by a meet and greet with the animals in the lobby!

VALENTINE'S SWING DANCE

Bringing big band jazz to the dance halls of Santa Fe College, we invite you to come out and enjoy the sounds of 1920's swing jazz by the SF Jazz Ensemble. This semi-formal event will also include light appetizers and free swing dance instruction. Directed by Dr. David Smith.

ALEXANDER HANSON

Opening Reception: February 9, 2024, 7 p.m., Santa Fe College Art Gallery

On Campus: February 9 - March 5, 2024 • On Exhibit: February 9 -March 15, 2024

Alexander Hanson received his MFA from the University of Iowa and now instructs sculpture at the University of Arkansas. His work often focuses on the use of objects, constructed and found, as a way to ask pointed questions. His work often takes form through installation or built environments. He will be creating a site-specific installation and spending a week on campus as a visiting artist-in-residency.

WINDS GO POP

February 22, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Lyceum Concert Hall

Winds Go Pop will showcase our Concert Band who will perform some of the most popular songs in American history. Sections will include popular dance grooves to some of the most memorable songs in cinematic history. Directed by Dr. David Smith.

JAZZ UP SPRING!

March 15, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month in April, the SF Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo will perform selections originally written and performed by the trailblazers of jazz. In addition, we will celebrate the birthday of composer and band leader Duke Ellington by performing some of his signature compositions. Directed by Dr. David Smith.

SING INTO SPRING

March 21, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

Our talented student chorus, ensembles and soloists will be accompanied by live music performed by our student musicians in an evening of wonderful music. Co-directed by Mitch Rorick and April Basiletti.

ELEMENTS OF STYLE

March 29-30, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

Dance Theatre of Santa Fe presents their annual concert showcasing a variety of dance styles. Directed by Melissa Brenner, Elements of Style will feature guest artist premieres, with more works by adjunct faculty: Jessie Dominguez-Reyes, Herman Ramos and Mohamed DaCosta.

April 19-20 and 26-27, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

Dubbed "a masterclass in farce," Noises Off! is a theatrical tour de force featuring a manic group of second-rate actors racing against the clock to open a play called Nothing On. Chaos abounds both onstage and backstage with a set that revolves a full 180 degrees, allowing the audience a glimpse into the slow demise of the play and what's left of the actor's reputations. It's all about doors and sardines in this classic comedy from British playwright Michael Frayn. Directed by Russell Schultz.

ROOM TO DANCE

June 7-8, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall

Dance Theatre of Santa Fe presents their annual student-choreographed and student-produced season finale. Come and see the dancers enthusiastically perform their favorite styles choreographed through their own voices. This audience favorite will end with a lively question and answer session with the student choreographers. Coordinated by Melissa Brenner.

Opening Reception April 19, 2024. The Annual Student Art Show is the yearly showcase of Santa Fe College student artwork. This juried exhibit features work made for or in class from the various subjects taught in the Visual Arts program. This includes painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking and photography. A guest juror from the community will select pieces for awards that are presented at a ceremony at the opening reception.
