Hobbs who? This was the question being asked when the District Champion Demons, coached by Jim Starr who was in his first year as head coach, played the No. 1 Hobbs Eagles here in Santa Fe. Many people are still wondering how this incredible feat happened. Here's the story . . . Early in September the Demons started their move by destroying N.M.M.I., Alamosa, and St. Mike's. Then Portales stepped in to try and ruin the Demons, but to no avail. The Demons were unstoppable as they rolled over Roswell Goddard and District foe, Farmington. The Bengals of Gallup were a surprise to the Demons, until the fighting machine of Espanola was sabotaged. On homecoming night, Albuquerque Academy was beaten before the eyes of the beauties. The Demons weren't to be denied any party when they took on Sandia in Albuquerque. So came the BIG surprise, which took 19 years to make, when the Demons drilled Los Alamos into the ground to take the District Championship. Finally, came the powerful Eagles from Hobbs, with the idea of pushing their district brothers out of the stadium. Hobbs was stunned at the way the Demons held them, and moved them up and down the field. We may have lost that one but now the cry is, "Remember Hobbs."

Santa Fe High's basketball team got off to a shaky start this season with a loss to an experienced Taos team. Settling down the next night, we defeated District foe, Gallup, and so went the season; losing games we should have won, or winning games we should have lost. Led by Coach Ortiz the Demons highlighted the season by scoring two victories over pre-season favorite Farmington, and St. Mike's. Whether winning or losing, the team always had a balanced attack against the opposition. So ended the amazing season.

A blazing bonfire built by this year's sophomores started the Homecoming activities. Finally with our football victory, the crowning of the queen and the fantastic dance, Homecoming 70-71 topped its festivities.

A new event instituted this year was Junior Class Breakfast, held at Holiday Inn. An elegant early breakfast was enjoyed by members of the class of 72.

In November 1970, Santa Fe's Annual Junior Miss Pageant was held at Greer Garson Theatre. Finalists were selected on talent, personality, interviews, academic achievement, poise, and other qualities contributing toward an ideal girl. Early in 1971 Vikki Scarafiotti was chosen as New Mexico's Junior Miss.

—Those Who Were Truly GreatNear the snow, near the sun, in the highest fields See how those names are feted by the waving grass, And by the streamers of white cloud, And whispers of wind in the listening sky; The names of those who in their lives fought for life, Who wore at their hearts the fire's centre. Born of the sun they traveled a short while towards the sun, And left the vivid air signed with their honour. —Stephen Spender-
