Every country has its own flag. Our flag did not always look the way it does today. In the early days the colonists lived in thirteen separate colonies, each with its own flag. The excellent staff of secretaries at SFHS are responsible for the handling of the never ending task of bookwork, finances, and attendance of the school. The ordering of supplies, equipment, and textbooks are also done by our secretaries.

The counseling department provides a variety of services, such as vocational, personal, and group counseling. The guidance staff also aids in registration of students and administration of college entrance exams, such as the ACT, SAT, and CLEP tests.

Vocal and Instrumental music enlivens the lives of students at SFHS. Band courses taught at SFHS include: Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Dance Band, and Orchestra. Under the direction of Clark Ponstler, the various bands participated in festivals throughout the year. Chorus I, II, and III students study voice production, the theory of music, and various music styles, they too competed in several music festivals. Mr. Ziems guitar classes continue to grow in popularity.

One of the most practical courses offered at S.F.H.S. is the Work-Study Program. Students enrolled in this course are given the opportunity to take half a day of schooling and work at a job the other half of the day, providing practical work experience for future living.

MECHANICAL DRAWING Drafting is extremely important to a student pursuing a career in Engineering, Construction, Manufacturing, and Industrial processing. In addition to being useful in many careers, it is also a great help to any individual interested in designing small projects in and around the house.
INDUSTRIAL ARTS Basic skills which enable the students to perform minor repairs and gain a knowledge of tools and their care are two phases of study taught in Gene Baca's Industrial Art classes. Design and construction of furniture and accent pieces occupies the woodworking unit. Mr. Baca works with precision.

NJROTC at the high school includes such subjects as electronics, gunnery, oceanography and meteorology. The program teaches its members to become ladies and gentlemen, administrators and leaders. The NJROTC also traveled to Norfolk, Virginia and San Diego this year where they participated in training operations at active naval bases.

STAFF Keeping the high school attractive and clean is the job of our custodial staff. Problems in plumbing, heating, and numerous other systems essential to the school are also taken care of by our devoted custodial staff. Without their efforts our school would not be able to function properly.

CAFETERIA STAFF Preparing and serving of a hot breakfast and lunch is the uneasy task of the cafeteria staff. It is proficiently handled by the group of dedicated women. The cafeteria staff also helps in providing meals for such school functions as the Student Council Enchilada Dinner.

Santa Fe High School in one of the few high schools around the state to have an adjoining vocational school. The Santa Fe High Vocational-Technical School hopes to provide students with the necessary skills to find and hold a job, by offering vocational and pre-vocational courses. Vo-Tech also provides vocational training for adults who wish to improve and gain additional knowledge in their chosen fields.

BUSINESS I EDUCATION Business Education offers such courses as secretarial procedures, office occupations, shorthand, typing, business law, office machines and marketing. Office occupations is a senior course, where students receive two units of credit for classroom work and one unit of credit for employment in the stenographic-secretarial field. Marketing classes are concerned with the study of retail sales and merchandising, and students receive one credit for classwork and two credits for on-the-job training.

Courses in auto repair, mechanics, welding, horticulture and architecture provide students with skills needed for existing jobs. Many on-going projects give students practical experience in their chosen field, among which are included the activities of the Future Farmers and sale of sturdy bedding plants by the Horticulture classes each spring. Welding and automotive classes work in practical job situations, gaining insights into the requirements of their chosen fields.

The Spirit of '76 showed itself in the students at Santa Fe High this year. Our community, which contains the oldest capitol in the United States and pre-dates the American Revolution, is rich in tradition and progressive in ideas, all of which is reflected in the people and events at SFHS. Groups, clubs and organizations worked together to produce outstanding dances, assemblies, celebrations, and diverse activities to make this the best year ever!

FIESTA
DAY
In the spirit of the traditional Labor Day Santa Fe Fiesta commemorating the Spanish conquest of New Mexico, Santa Fe High School holds its own Fiesta Day the Friday before the long weekend. The student body and faculty are encouraged to dress in the colorful and traditional costumes reflecting Santa Fe's cultural history. Lunch hour featured the excitement of a genuine Mariachi Band who had generously consented to play on campus for the enjoyment of the students. Muchas gracias, senores, everyone loved it!
HOMECOMING

Homecoming festivities began on Thursday with the construction of the traditional bonfire by the sophomore class, who piled up a towering structure of wood, boxes and any other combustible material and topped it off with the traditional outhouse which had been the feverish target of an attempted senior raid. Later, around the roaring flames of the fire, the yearly class tugof-war was held while the sophomores efforts went up in smoke. Weeks earlier, construction had begun on the colorful Homecoming floats, but many were barely finished when the judges visited the Magers Field two hours before the parade. At two o'clock, the Plaza was circled by these floats, the band, ROTC, and a packed crown of student and townspeople on-lookers. At half-time of the exciting football game, Cindy Hopkins was crowned Homecoming Queen, and reigned with her court through the rest of the evening which included a swinging Homecoming dance at Sweeney Gym.

Mid-November saw frantic activity on campus as the desperate, man-hunting gals went after the reluctant, resourceful and women-hating guys at SFHSâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;for the Sadie Hawkins dance, naturally! When the dust had settled and the bachelors were all corralled, everyone descended on the ole Sweeney Barn for the big hoedown. The straw flew and the cider flowed, and the music was mighty great as the ever-loving couples stomped away until midnight. PEARL HARBOR
DAY Pearl Harbor Day at Santa Fe High School is an annual observance of the anniversary of December 7, 1941, a day that shocked our nation and marked the beginning of World War II for the United States. This ceremony is managed by the Staters Club under the sponsorship of the American Legion and Auxiliary. Speakers included government and military officials. The Santa Fe High NJROTC supplied a color guard for the flag raising. The day and its observnace re-state the sobering fact that we do not always have peace just because we want it.

Thanksgiving weekend, after months of practice and anticipation, Santa Fe's lovliest and most talented young ladies assemble for the rigorous competition of the Junior Miss Pageant. Vieing for scholarships and the coveted crown, the girls meet for luncheon, are interviewed by the judges and present an artistic performance. Judging is on scholastic achievement, creative and performing arts, the interview, poise and appearance and youth fitness. Junior Miss is open to all high school senior girls and presents experiences and opportunity that help shape the lives of those who enter.

CANDLES CREATE CHRISTMAS MAGIC.
Demon Christmas Under The Stars is one of the most popular traditions at SFHS. Under the leadership of Student Council, the campus was transformed into a nighttime wonderland of glimmering faralitos. The evening on campus for students, parents and townspeople included the annual Demon Christmas show where talented students performed before an enthusiastic audience in the school cafeteria. Inside each building, classes had decorated homerooms in holiday themes and teachers met and visited with parents who came around during the evening. It was a beautiful introduction to the holiday season and vacation which came just two days later.
HOMEROOM BASKETBALL
A welcome pick-up from the mid-winter blahs is provided by the fierce competition of homeroom basketball which is organized so that each homeroom may sponsor both a girls and boys team. Only varsity basketball players were barred from the action which occurred during the noon hour in the gym. Everyone had fun and and some of the real talent displayed should have the coaches watching!

Valentines Day is for romance and Santa Fe High got into the the spirit with its own Sweetheart Dance, held at Sweeney Gym under the sponsorship of the Senior Class. The queen and court were chosen by the penny-a-vote process. The ballroom was transformed into a heart-warming, old fashioned valentine with hearts and red and white streamers across the ceiling and along the walls. The band "Truckin' " provided the music as couples danced away a sentimental evening.

A little boogie-woogie and a lot of fun at the 50 s Dance!
It was back to bobby sox and boogie-woogie when, in a nostalgic mood, SFHS recaptured the spirit of the 50's. During the day at school, guys roamed around between classes in slicked-back hair, boots and black leather jackets while the girls sported pony-tail hairdos, saddle-shoes and mid-calf, gathered skirts. In the evening, everyone jitterbugged away happily until midnight to the music of the Boogie Machine.

DRAMA
The SFHS Drama Department is serious theater where the best of contemporary and traditional plays are presented for the enjoyment of students and residents in the community. A high degree of professionalism is displayed by the student thespians in both stagecraft and acting. Hits of the season included The Man Who Came To Dinner and Plaza Suite as well as collaborative effort with the music department. The Whimsical Players are worth an evening of anyone's time.

The 1976 annual Naval dinner and ball for the NJROTC cadets at Santa Fe High was held at the Kirtland Air Force Base Officer's Club in Albuquerque. Under the benign eye of their commanding officer, Captain Jack Herrick and other guest officers, the crew from Santa Fe hove to with a delicious meal, ceremonial crowning of the ball queen, and dancing until the early hours. The formal elegance of the occasion provided an impressive contrast to the daily campus grind.

Demon Vaudeville provides an opportunity, each spring, for the talented and witty individuals at SFHS to perform before an enthusiastic audience of peers and parents. Singing, dancing and comic acts provided crowd-pleasing variety for all. Who can forget the antics of the "Macho Street Gang" or any of the other highlights of the evening? Each year, it just gets better!

Two talented musicians entertain the class night crowd.
The spirit of pre-graduation fun provided the momentum for the annual Class Night program. All the seniors either wanted to get in on the act, or to see what the others had thought up and the evening was a mixture of high-jinks and nostalgia for what was soon to be left behind. The SFHS gym was the setting and our fearless vice-principal John 1 'Bouncer" Sena kept the action from lagging. By Class Night, the end was in sight, and it was both fascinating and frightening to know that next year we would not be here.

PROM
With elegant tuxedos and carefully coiffed hair to compliment dazzling gowns, couples set out for the big evening of JuniorSenior Prom, the last big activity of the year and a gift of the Junior class to the departing seniors.
First to a fashionable restaurant for a multi-course dinner and then on to the big ball is the format for the evening. The theme for the evening was "Do You Know Where You Are Going To?" with music by the "Jasimine" Band. Focal point of the decorations was a water fountain which played streams of water under multicolored lights. Guests entered through a streamer-festooned canopy and the bandstand was decorated with airy clusters of balloons. The weather was beautiful and the night was perfect!

SENIOR WEEK

Senior week begins with giving out caps and gowns on the last day the graduating seniors attend classâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;one week before the less-fortunate rest of the student body. The great moment always takes on a carnival atmosphere as caps and gowns are tried on for fit, caps adjusted to the proper angle and the coveted red tassles denoting the academic top ten percent of the class, are affixed to the proper caps. After this, it is morning practice in Sweeney Gym, afternoon activities and evening parties as the countdown to graduation goes forward.

BACCALAUREATE
The religious and moral implications of graduation are emphasized in the traditional ceremony of Baccalaureate. This year, as in previous years, the upcoming graduating class gathered at the IAIA Amphitheater at two in the afternoon the Sunday before graduation. Here in the brilliant spring sunshine, they heard clergymen of various faiths, their own classmates and musical groups from SFHS, and savored the feelings gained from knowing this was the next to the last time they would all be together. Family and friends shared the moment.

GRADUATION May 26 brought Graduation and an end to twelve years of school for the Class of '76. They gathered in Sweeney Gym and ranked in alphabetical order, marched in to the familiar strains of "Pomp and Circumstance" played by the SFHS Band. This year's tri-valedictorians, Julie Wugalter, Ingrid Hayden, and Sarah Clark who each had a 4.0 for the cumulative four years of high school, joined the School Board, Superintendent Miller and Principal Joseph Casados on stage for the ceremony. As Ben Rael intoned the names, each graduate came forward for his diploma and congratulations. Then came the march back out and the excited tumult of turning in caps and gowns and out into the warm, early summer evening where the doors of Santa Fe High closed on the Class of 1976 for the last time.

As the year ended and we looked back, we realized it was SPIRIT that made 1976 a memorable year at SFHS. This manifested itself in the spirit of friendliness among students and teachers, the spirit of cooperation in our large and crowded school, the spirit of inquiry which led us in our studies, the spirit of competition in our athletics, and the spirit of fun in all of our activities. Let us keep the Spirit of '76 in the years to come!

Football proved to be a disappointment at Santa Fe High this year, as the Demon gridders finished with a losing season. Head coach Dave Church and his coaching staff employed an extensive conditioning and training program during the summer months to prepare the team for regular season play. Pre-season play ended with one win, three ties and one loss for Santa Fe. The first game of the season brought the Demon's only victory, as they defeated Academy 3 - 0 . Later in the year, cross-town rival St. Michaels shut-out the Demons 20-0. Santa Fe then went on to a 13 - 13 tie with the Gallup Bengals in their first district contest. Four defeats in a row followed the Gallup tie, as the Demons fell to Los Alamos, Albuquerque High, West Mesa and Farmington. Santa Fe ended the year tied with Gallup for last place in district. The Demons closed with an 0 - 4 - 1 record in district play and one win, eight losses and two ties for the overall season. The Junior Varsity team finished the season with a 5 - 4 - 0 record, winning their last five games in a row.

The S.F.H.S. cagers got off to a poor start this year, losing their first four games. The rival Horsemen downed the Demons in a close (49 - 46) contest. The defeat of both Roswell teams gave the Demons their first two wins of the season. In a mid-season victory, the host Demons swept past seven of a field of eight teams, including AAA champ Taos, to take second place in the Capital City Invitational Tournament. The defeat of Belen 52 - 46, was followed by three straight losses for Santa Fe; Los Alamos 84-59, West Mesa 65 - 50 and Albuquerque High 8 3 - 6 1 . Victories over Gallup (66 - 46) and Farmington (56 - 45), along with defeats by Espanola (66 - 60) and Los Alamos (66 â&#x20AC;˘ 57) closed out regular season play. Sparked by first year coach Lenny Roybal, and paced by Dow Oellien, Dave Sweeney and Darrell Espy, the Demons moved on into district tournament play. How to block a shot.

In the district tourney the Demons placed fourth in competition after being defeated by Espanola 58 - 43. By season's end Santa Fe had four wins and eight losses in district 1AAAA competition, and a 9 - 15 overall record. In junior varsity competition the Demon JV team dribbled and shot their way to an overall 1 6 - 3 record. They wound up their season with a 10 - 2 district record and the first place district title. With the addition of new talent, both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams should have good seasons next year. West Mesaâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;down and out.

In state-wide competition this year, the Girl's Volleyball team defeated both Taos (15 - 11, 15 - 5) and Espanola ( 1 5 - 2 , 15 - 2) early in the season. These games were followed by two more victories over Pojoaque ( 1 5 - 7 , 15 - 7) and West Las Vegas ( 1 5 - 3 , 15 - 4). In district tournament competition S.F.H.S. took the first place title. Then, in regional play, the spikers battled to second place. Coach Mefford's volleyballers finally moved into state competition. They lost to Cibola High in the semi-finals in the state tourney. Then, defeating Carlsbad in the consolation game, the Demonettes brought home third place in state honors.

Good coaching and hours of practice were the main reasons the SFHS Gymnastics team was successful this year. The performances tested the form and style of each member. Year in and year out the gymnastics team wins honors for the high school. The girl's team placed third at the Rio Grande meet in February with a score of 53.15 points. Said first-year coach Sue Van Buskirk, "The team has a super attitude and dedication to the sport."

First year coach Jack Hopkins led the S.F.H.S. tankers through twelve regular season meets this year. Team competition included encounters with St. Pius, Albuquerque Academy, Cibola, Albuquerque High, Del Norte, Eldorado, Sandia, Manzano, Valley and Los Alamos. The Demon swimmers also hosted the Capital City Invitational Meet. In February, team members competed in the State Championship Meet held at the University of New Mexico Olympic pool. Greg Baca won individual honors at that meet, with two sixth places to his credit. Lack of adequate practice space, along with other factors, contributed to a disappointing season for the Demon Swimming Team

Under head coach Gilbert Mier, the Santa Fe High Wrestling Team finished the season with a strong record of eight wins, five losses, two ties. Going on to the State Meet, Larry Lujan wrestled his way to State Champion in the 112 pound class. Frisco Vieira brought home a bronze medal in the 132 pound class and the Demon team placed in the top half of the tournament, earning the eleventh-place slot in a twenty-three team field and scoring a total of forty-two and one-half points. Under the leadership of Coach Mier, increased participation has been encouraged and a stronger and more balanced team is emerging from year to year. This year, the Junior-Varsity also had a winning season, not losing a single match.

GIRL'S BASKETBALL
Out-scoring their opponents both in shooting and on the boards, Ernest Gonzales' basketball team closed the season with an overall record of twelve to seven. The Demonettes defeated St. Michael's (45 - 19), Taos (54 - 26) and Las Vegas Robertson (32 - 22). Three of their seven losses, to Belen, St. Mike's and Espanola, occurred in overtime play, while only a two-point margin resulted in two more of the losses against Espanola and Raton. The two point losses cost the hoopsters a shot at the State crown. The Girl's basketball team closed out an exciting year by placing third in District 1 AA competition.

For the second time in a row, Coach John Alire's Cross Country team captured the State title this year. The Demon harriers out-distanced their competition to bring home a nine to two season record. In the state meet, individual performances by David Segura, third; Kerry Olson, sixth; Paul Graham, seventh; Gene Fulgenzi, tenth; John Gage, nineteenth; and Dennis Mares, twenty-second, led the Demons to their second consecutive 1 AAAA State Championship. When the all-state cross-country team was announced, Demons dominated the poll, with David Segura as a unanimous choice. Coach Alire was voted coach of the year for the second time, also. The Junior Varsity was not far behind with an eight to two season record. Presently, the Cross Country team has a 35 - 7 two-year record, and with many returning lettermen and upcoming JV talent, the outlook for a third consecutive state title is good. Frank coming in.

SOCCER The soccer team, under the coaching of Dr. Bill Lyons and Martin Jacobson, played their way to a 3 - 1 record. The newly-formed team defeated the College of Santa Fe, Adams State College and Los Alamos high, while losing to St. Johns. During the spring, an intramural tournament took place. Eighty people participated in the two week clinic for training in soccer skills and the team competition that followed. Coaches Jacobson and Fabian Chavez ended the year on another successful note when soccer was approved as a varsity sport!

TABLE TENNIS Led by Co-Captains, Steve Medina and Alex Martinez, the SFHS Table Tennis team breezed through its first season of inter-school competition with an unbeaten record, winning against Sandia, Albuquerque High and Academy in Albuquerque and defeating Sandia in a home meet. At the State meet in May, the Demons outpointed all other teams and captured individual honors with Steve Medina taking second, class 5-A, Reynaldo Roybal 2nd, class 2-A, Erick Slade 2nd, class 1-A, James Trujillo 3rd, class 5-A, Bernie Romero, 3rd, class 4-A and LeRoy Martinez 3rd, class 1-A. Additionally, the all-school tournament attracted nearly 70 singles players with individual winners: Alex Martinez, school singles champion, Edward Mier, second, and Steve Medina, third, and the amateur division first place taken by Bernie Romero.

It gives you that zingy feeling.
A winter of below average snowfall disappointed the ski crowd at SFHS. However, in spite of the fact that not all runs were open all of the time, the school ski program was successfully completed just before the snows disappeared entirely, and a large new group has joined the hard-bitten veterans who wait impatiently for next winter. While not a varsity sport at Santa Fe High, skiing attracts more participants than any other school-year sport. Many, starting in the beginning program, progress on to excellence, and a few of the highly talented go on to competitive racing while in high school and join varsity teams when they go away to college. Snow sports are an established fact at Santa Fe High, with even snow-shoeing coming into popularity.

Under the leadership of sponsor Ben Rael, a nationally ranked rodeo judge and expert horseman, the Santa Fe High Rodeo club worked long, hard hours improving individual skills and preparing for the spring rodeo which was held at the Rodeo Grounds in mid-May. With nearly two hundred entries from around the state and other areas of the Southwest, the SFHS rodeo competition was the largest ever held and attracted more riders than the summer professional rodeo held each year. Bull riding, roping, barrel racing and bronc riding were main events and the skills displayed by this years winners would seem to indicate that a number of the high school riders have a future in the professional circuit. Darn it, I missed!!

The SFHS Tennis Team had a strong season this year in spite of injuries and bad weather. Out of the sixteen matches played, the Demons lost only two, both to Los Alamos with scores of 3 - 6, 3 - 6. Impressive wins were scored against Albuquerque Academy twice, St. Mike's twice, Albuquerque High and Roswell. Star of the team was Daryl Mechem who was the only player to place at State. Others adding strength to the matches were seniors Kip Whitlock, Danny Byrnes, Phillip Alarid and Alex Martinez. The team was coached by Ramon Martinez. Danny, going after that ball.

Coach Gwen Watson's Demonette tennis team stretched its winning record further this year, with a 5 - 1 record, their only loss coming from St Pius. Defending its two-year state championship, five members of the team went to the state tournament where they again swept the courts for their third straight win. The only real problem encountered by the team during the past year seems to be in finding competition tough enough to give them a good game!

Warm spring weather signals the beginning of baseball season for Coach Joe Jerry Martinez and his team. This season, the Demons dropped a couple at the start, but then came on strong to win nine in a row. Eleven returning letter men gave strength and experience to the team with pitching power supplied by Dave Sweeney, Dino Shelton, and Juan Bustos. With a strong season record of 16 - 10, Santa Fe finished in a three-way tie for first in district. The team then won the tie-breaker district playoff to qualify for the state tournament. In Carlsbad, the Demons were stopped in the semi-finals, denying Coach Martinez another place in the long string of district and state honors he has collected during his eight successful years as Mr. Baseball of Santa Fe High. Santa Fe High track team opened its season with a dual meet against Los Alamos where Coach Robert Ortiz took his first loss 109 - 37. From here the team managed to pull itself together and go through the season to win third in district. In individual meets, the team placed first at Alamosa, second in the Los Alamos and Sandia meets and third at the Belen Invitational. Going on to state, David Segura placed 3rd in the two mile and Blake Witcher sixth in discus. The 440, 880 and mile relay teams qualified for State, but failed to place in competition there.

The Santa Fe High girls' track team opened the season with a win in a three-way meet competing against Belen, Mid-High and Taos. The Demonettes scored 128.5 points for an easy victory, finishing first in shotput, discus, and high jump, and second in the softball throw and long jump as well as outclassing the competition in field events where Dolores Abeyta won both the 50 and 80 yard hurdles. Next Santa Fe hosted a triangular meet against Los Alamos, Albuquerque and Sandia where the team again placed strongly. The end of the season saw Santa Fe well up in state competition.

With the passing of Salvador Perez last September, Santa Fe lost its most outstanding athletic coach, a remarkable citizen, a devout churchman, a dedicated teacher, an exemplary family man, a friend in the community, and a leader of the young whose influence will be felt for years to come. Salvador Perez came, early in his life, from Mexico; first to Colorado and then to New Mexico which became his permanent home. As a young boy in school, outstanding achievement pointed the way to future greatness. In high school, he was named to allNew Mexico teams in both football and basketball. After graduating from St. Michael's, he went directly into coaching, working both at St. Michael's and Santa Fe High. Coach Perez produced a seemingly unending succession of championship teams who won state and national honors. In his later years at S.F.H.S., he took over cross country track and saw his teams win state championships year after year. The highest measure of his strength, faith, and character were seen most vividly in his final courageous and unyielding battle with his last illness. He carried on with dignity and faith against unrelenting odds revealing the inner strength of the great athlete who stayed in the game to the end. In recognition of his contributions to the community, the city two years ago named the Salvador Perez recreation complex in lasting honor of this man.

GOLF The Demon golf team, coached by Lenny Roybal, ended the season by winning the State 1-AAAA championship. Led by top golfers Lee Sanchez, Chris Hollis, Mike McCord, Mike Barnes and Ralph Shantz, the team had a good year, with the only major loss being dropped down to fourth place in the Academy Invitational golf tournament held at Arroyo del Oso course in Albuquerque. Upcoming team members who offer real hope for another championship year are: Ted Madrid, Dallas Aringdale, Jimmy Ramsey, Jay Shantz, Brad Bingham, and Joey Tiano. Getting ready for the putt.

DEMON OF THE YEAR
The annual Athletic Awards Banquet, honoring the outstanding players in each of the varsity sports at SFHS, was held in early May at the Glorieta conference center. Some five hundred athletes, coaches and parents gathered for the dinner and awards presentations. Those receiving official recognition for their performance in sports were: Adrienne Mechem, girls' tennis, Kip Whitlock, boys' tennis, Greg Baca and Theresa Grubbs, boys and girls swimming awards, David Segura, cross country and Demon of the Year, Lee Sanchez, golf, Ingrid Hayden, volleyball and Demonette of the Year, Dow Olien, basketball, David Iglesias, football, and Dale Fox, baseball. In being named Demon of the Year, David Segura and Ingrid Hayden received Santa Fe High's highest sports honor. They were selected as not only the best in their individual sport, but also as the finest athletes in the school. 241

An exciting program in its third year at Santa Fe High this year was the Demon Spotlight. The program was greatly expanded this year due to a federal grant. The spotlight focused on activities, issues and people related to the school and was televised each Tuesday evening on Cable T-V. Marilyn Huber and her staff of telecasters met and triumphed over many complications. The result was an excellent learning experience for those who participated and an informative show for the viewer.

BOWLING Bowling Champs: The newest and one of the most exciting clubs at SFHS is the Bowling Club which meets once a week at a local alley. A large number of students have been attracted to this athletic activity and from this group, several have already emerged as champions in local competition. RODEO CLUB
NJROTC works to master the Naval concepts and academic skills of seamanship, as well as learning the pride and discipline of a military unit. The Color Guard and drill team represent the school at various community events and are trained in crown and traffic control. The weight and importance of naval operations in national policy are viewed and experienced first-hand in the annual trips to Naval bases. This year the cadets, at least the fortunate ones, were able to visit both the Norfolk Navy Base and the San Diego base where ships and water rounded out the experience of a year of growth and insights.

The Debs display the trophy they won in state competition, where their appearance, charm and precision routines made them an easy first choice
for the judges. These same routines enlivened half-time ceremonies at football games and activities during the year.
Under the baton of Director Clark Pontsler, Santa Fe High School Bands have swept state and regional honors, year after year. The bands have also performed in Mexico City, Moscow and Rome where international honors were accorded each performance. The enthusiasm, discipline, hard work
and group loyalty that each young musician brings to these bands contribute to the high musical standards maintained. But the final, vital ingredient that transforms each group is the excellence demanded by Mr. Pontsler, affectionately known to all his musicians as "Boss."
