FOOTBALL Head Coach Daivd Church, strongly aided by Assistant coaches Mike Mares, Bob Martinez, Hoyt Mutz and Randy Whittemore, fielded a solid team which surpised the opposition and delighted the fans who cheered the fighting Demons all the way to the semi-finals of the State 1AAAA Championship.
FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF: (from top to bottom) Head Coach David Church, Assistant ร oaรงbes Robert Martinez, Mike Mares, Randy Whittemore, and Hoyt Mutz
The 1976 football season saw Coach David Church's conditioning program and demanding practice sessions pay off. From the beginning win over Cibola to final defeat by Carlsbad in the State play-offs the Demons displayed a tough, offensive brand of football not seen in Santa Fe in many a year. Cood ball balding, consistent on-the-ground gains, and rugged defensive play carried the varsity to a season record of seven wins to four losses. All-District honors went to players Laie Oretega, Ricky Ortega, Everett Ortega, and John Montano. Other outstanding seniors were: Juan Bustos, Danny Holder, Manuel Jacques, Jay Mitchell, Ron Romero and Nick Thompson.
This year's Varsity was characterized by spirit—and the will to win. Confidence came with the season was highlighted by a satisfying 33 — 0 cross-town rival, St. Mikes and a Homecoming strong Farmington team.

Basketball mentor, Lenny Roybal predicted he would have- a winning season and went on to prove it. Rated a dismal tenth in District by the pre-season experts, the Demons had dropped only one game, to the Albuquerque Bulldogs, by the time they swept the Capitol City Invitational late in the season. From the opening rout of Taos, to the dramatic double victory over arch-rival, St. Mike's the Demon hoopsters used hard, coordinated play to compile on of SFHS' best records ever. The new fieldhouse, which provides a home at last for the Demon teams, held record crowds and school spirit soared higher with each succeeding victory. Coach Roybal has earned the right to smile.

VOLLEYBALL Volleyball came through strong in 1976, as Coach Bertha Mefford led her team through a season of rough competition. With outstanding play by each member, the season was wound up with an excellent record of nine wins against only four losses. Although the team dropped its first game of the year against Cibola, this was partially recouped later in the season when the Demons won a hotly contested third place at the Cibola Tournament. The last game of the season was played on the Demon's house court and resulted in a loss to Los Alamos. The team won fourth place in District 1AAAA in overall play. A major factor in Volleyballs great season was being able to use the new fieldhouse which was finally completed during the past summer.

Under the coaching of John Alire, the Santa Fe High School Cross Country team captured its third straight AAAA State Title. The Demons compiled 41 points at the State competiton and were led by three-time All-Stater, Paul Graham. Outstanding performance by every member of this talented group has brought them National recognition. Harrier Magazine ranked the Santa Fe High group third in the nation and Joe Namath's National Prep Sports awarded them seventh place standing. Individual talent, determination, conditioning and skillful coaching all played a part in the honors won. 03

Soccer became "legalized" this year when it was admitted to varisty sports. Growing in popularity over the last few years, the support of soccer by students and parents was overwhelming. To more than justify the support of the city schools' administration, the SFHS soccer team finished first in the northern division of the Soccer League, beating out long-time powerhouse, Santa Fe Prep six to one. Moving on to the State Championships, the novice team succeeded in capturing fourth place. With a large number of enthusiastic players to choose from, next year's team promises to exert even stronger "Demon Power" on the playing field.

WRESTLING
Coach Gil Mier continues to produce power—house wrestling teams at SFHS with State Champions Dan Holder and Laie Ortega consistently ranked among the winners. The impressive twelve—one—one mark rolled up this year saw the Demons doing equally well both at home and away. The team avenged itself on arch—rivals, St. Mikes, by beating them twice, a feat that had not been equalled since 1971. Gaining confidence as the year advanced, the team made a strong showing at the State Tournament, with Holder and Ortega both winning bronze medals. The experience gained this year stands the team in good position to challenge the State champions next year.

GYMNASTICS 48
Under the leadership of beginning gymnastics coach, Sue VanBuskirk, the SFHS team demonstrated technical skill and competitive know-how. The result was an exciting season which saw them win their matches eleven to one as compared to the less satisfactory one win and ten losses of a year ago. With the occasional off day that all teams experience, the Demons did not qualify at State. However, individual star, Sharon Hays placed second in State competition.
SKIING
For the dedicated skiers at SFHS, the winter of 1977 was a disaster窶年O SNOW! Except for a few light falls that were promptly skied out, the slopes at the basin remained bare. The school ski program, which had effectively turned novices into seasoned skiers for many years past, was cancelled. As the Olins, Rossignols and Hexels were reluctantly put by, the only hope was that next year would produce all the snow that didn't fall this year.
WEIGHT LIFTING
Next year's football team is this years weight lifting team, and under the coaching of David Church the 60 or o members are out there benching, pressing, squating nd curling. Making the stud club is the one thing that the
J
weight lifters shoot for. This is done by lifting a combined weight of 2500 pounds. So when the team brings back a football championship, you'll know where it started. 51
TABLE TENNIS
THE GRAND CHAMPION
53
The SFHS Table Tennis team, which won all matches and swept the State Championship last year, had trouble finding any competition this year, probably because of reluctance on the part of other teams to be smothered two years in a row. Undaunted, the team sharpened its skills in readiness for any available competition. Team Captain and all-school champion was senior James Trujillo.

MOTOCROSS
Moto-Cross is not yet officially sponsored by the school system, but because of the excitement it generates and the enthusiasm and dedication of the participants, this is a sport to be considered. This year, the rugged, trail busting action peaked on good-weather weekends and at the organized meets attended by members of the SFHS group. Leader of the local Bikers was Jason Bettis. 55

GIRLS TENNIS
Defending State Champions Laura Chavez and Andrea Martinez of the Santa Fe High School girls tennis team defeated teammates Valerie Martinez and Nina Alarid, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to win the District 1AAAA Doubles Crown. The Demonette teams by virtue of District finishes, advanced to the State Championships which were held May 13 and 14 at Hobbs. At the State Championships Laura Chavez and Andrea Martinez were upended by the St. Pius duo of Andi Palmissano and Jeanette Hevenut. Santa Fe's other doubles team of Valerie Martinez and Nina Alarid placed fourth, ending the Demonettes season with a successful 13-1 record. The Santa Fe High Girls Tennis Team is coached by Gwen Watson. 57
BOYS TENNIS
The Santa Fe High School Boys Tennis team tied with Albuquerque High for the District 1AAAA team title. The Demon Duo of Daryl Mechem and Erick Lucero, by winning the doubles competition earned a birth in the 1977 Class AAAA State Championships which were held May 13, at Hobbs. The number 2 doubles team of Mike Bachicha and Alex Kalangis reached the semifinal round before losing to the district runners up from Los Alamos. The Santa Fe High School doubles team of Daryl Mechem and Erick Lucero led the Demons to a third place finish in doubles competition at the State Championships in Hobbs. The team finished a very successful season with an 11-0-1 record and the District Crown. The boys tennis team was coached by Ramon Martinez.

RODEO
60
Under the leadership of Vo—Tech Principal, Fernando Ramirez and advisory of Ben Rael, the SFHS Senior English teacher who is also a nationally accredited rodeo judge, the Demon Rodeo Team entered competitive events across the state. In early spring, they also hosted their own rodeo at the local arena. The cowboys and cowgirls rode for the prizes in a variety of events including barrel racing, goat tying, bull riding, calf roping and bronc riding. The Demon team ranked high in all events and showed the class that will lead some on to competition in the major rodeo circuits nationally.
SOFTBALL
For the girls who enjoy the solid whack of bat against ball or playing the outfield on a bright spring day, a dream came true this year when softball was made a varsity sport. Coached by Bertha Mefford, the beginning team improved for the whole season and advanced to play in the first round of the state tournament. Even though defeated there in the first game, the freshman team had compiled a respectable 4-7 mark for the season. Additionally, they had gained experience and confidence to make them a team to watch next year!

GOLF
The Santa Fe Country Club provides excellent playing conditions for the major part of the year and gives the Demons a challenging course to test their skills.
64
Coif, coached by C. Allen for the first year ever had both a girls and boys team. The boys by winning 4 to 6 matches captured the District title. In state competition the Demons placed 3rd behind Alamogordo and Sandia. Individual honors went to Lee Sanchez for winning the state championship the second consecutive season. Girls competition for a first year performed very well. In all six of their matches they did no worse than place second, they also placed second in the State Meet, which is a real achievement for starting out. Individual team members for both teams are as follows, Boys; Lee Sanchez, Mike Barnes, Jay Shantz, Ralph Shantz, and Joe Tiano. Girls: Kelsey Tiano, Lisa Corriz, Debbie Bingham, Gail Gierat and Anita Soltero.
TRACK
68
Track, coached by Robert Ortiz and John Alire enjoyed a fair season, winning the Alamosa Relays and finishing second to Los Alamos in the Capital City Meet. In District action the young team surprised everyone by coming up and finishing 2nd behind Los Alamos. The team qualified eleven team members tu go to State. Paul Graham's 9:33 in the two mile shattered the school record which had been held by David Sandoval with a 9:48.2 and set a new mark for future runners to beat. The excellent showing by the track team this year focused on strong effort in all events through individual conditioning and skillful coaching.
69
This season, Coach Markley Lumpkins girls' track team went through the strenuous practice routines of running, jumping, vaulting and throwing and came away with a strong unit that collected ribbons and awards at all meets. Before the season was over and equipment put away, nine girls went to the State Championship meet in Albuquerque. At this meet, Jo Ann Baca took third in the shot put and Karen Baxter took fifth in the 880. The mile relay team captured third, while the 880 medley relay team took sixth place. Coach Lumpkins and the team alike had reason to be pleased with the outcome of all the work.

BASEBALL
72
This was definitely the year for baseball at SFHS. Coach Joe Jerry Martinez fielded a powerhouse team that tore through the competition to establish a winning 9—3 District mark. This gave the Demons undisputed first place in 1AAAA and won for them also the right to host the State Tournament. In the State games, they defeated Alamogordo 2—0, Manzano 5—4 and toppled Del Norte 6—4 in the final championship game. Santa Fe had its first State Baseball Championship ever and a remarkable all season record of 17 wins against only 9 losses. Demon power had done it and Coach Martinez could take real pride in a job well done.

This year, 1977, brought a new gymnasium, new approaches, new dedication, new pride and new honors to all Demon athletes, their coaches, the student body and the community at large. The size of the school and the many sports pursued, forces the fan to pick and choose where he shall go cheer. But go cheer, we do, and we have plenty to cheer about!

HOMECOMING
This is a hold up!
188
W i l l you get your act together?
ez u
We're DEMONS.. and that's enough!
Homecoming was one of the big Demon events of the year. Torched by Thursday evening bonfire which the Sophomores had labored all day to build, Friday followed with the giant parade of floats and bands through downtown Santa Fe. That evening, the Demon football team gave a demonstration of their power by trouncing West Mesa. Highlight of the half-time ceremonies was the crowning of Sylvia Martinez as queen. Saturday night ended the three day celebration with a large formal dance in the Activity Center. How dare you call me a VW.

I want to be hitched.
Dance to the music.

Ring around the rosie.
I know something you don't know.
After much sweet talk and bribery, many girls managed to " c a t c h " a partner for the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance sponsored by the Speech Club in the Demon Barn on November 19. To set an appropriate atmosphere, the floor was covered with straw and the walls were decorated with comics and large murals. Crepe paper streamers hung from the balcony. Various booths added on original aspect to the dance. There was a kissing booth where unhitched people recieved an equal share. Then there was a marriage booth for the more " d a r i n g " couples who often ended the night with a final visit to the divorce booth. Music was by the Highlanders. The night was a success and every one spent a relaxed and enjoyable evening in an informal atmosphere. 191

PEARL HARBOR DAY
194
Pearl Harbor Day at Santa Fe High is an annual observance of the anniversary of the beginning of World War I I . The ceremony is managed by the Staters Club under the sponsorship of American Legion and Auxilary, and raising of the flag by the R.O.T.C. The solemn atmosphere reminded students of a bitter day in our history.
About Face!
50's DANCE
Straight leg jeans and long skirted students recaptured the spirit of the 50's in one of the springs most enjoyable dances. In authentic 50's clothes, couples jitterbugged away the evening and hoped to win contests that were held. The dance captured the fun of the way it used to be. This was one more of the great Demon doings of 1977.

Having a good time??
Dancing to the music.
Snowball, the winter formal dance that brings forth an annual break in the pre-semester blues. Decorations of glittering gold and silver, and elegant gowns and fashioable suits on the couples created a festive atmosphere in the dimly-lit Activity Center. The band played and refreshments were served. The 1976-77 Snowball Queen was Sue Coultas. The winter snowstorm didn't keep people from coming and the dance was an exciting night. Wake me up when it's over.

Up for two.
Homeroom Intramurals kept the campus jumping during the late winter and spring months. This year had more teams in competition due to co-ed teams as well as all male teams. Games were set through homerooms and rivalry was intense. Throughout the intramural program, in wins, forfeits, losses, and ties, the spirit and good fun prevailed. Most consistent winners were M r s . Cillis's homeroom students, who managed to down all comers in every sport they entered. 199

Drama classes present various plays throughout the year for the students, parents and faculty enjoyment. Under the direction of Drama Teacher, Denise Gonzales, the students learn to direct and put on plays and further develop their acting talents. The offerings are varied, but the productions are always first-class.

Demon Vaudeville, that big show that starts off the Senior activities, was held at the Activity Center, where numerous and enthusiastic people applauded it's success. With several Santa Fe students providing their talent the show started off with a bang and ended with a bang. There were dancers, singers, musicians, skits—individuals and groups, each with a crowd—pleasing performance.

SENIOR AWARDS
Congratulations!
I think this one is yours
think I'm being watched.
I did it!
Senior Awards, an annual assembly, is that happy time at the end of the year where senior students are recognized by their teachers for outstanding accomplishments in school. Announcements of scholarships and various competitive awards are also given at this time. For seniors receiving awards going up to be given them is a proud moment that makes them realize that all the hard work and time spent in high school, was not only worthwhile, but decidedly rewarding. 207

Back
Year after year, seniors get together on an evening in early May to express through songs, skits and satire the things that they found meaningful and the things they found meaningless at SFHS. This event is Class Night and all the Seniors showed up on schedule this year to lampoon or praise. There were wacky birds, a car wash, and countless other enjoyable acts and presentations. The '77 Seniors said it all!

Junior Senior Prom is planned months ahead of time. Juniors try raising money to put on an unforgettable Prom for the departing Seniors. The theme for the dance this year was "Stairway to Heaven". The ceiling was floating with streamers of baby blue and white and glittering rings of tinsel spun around in various places of the room. Music was provided by the band "Traveler". The room was filled with the fragrance of flowers and the sight of elegant ball gowns and colorful tuxedos. It will always be a night that the 1977 Seniors will remember, from the dinner at the special restaurant to the final sleepy goodnight—or, more likely, good morning!

Baccalaureate is the traditional solemn religious ceremony preceeding graduation. This year the 1977 graduates of Santa Fe High gathered on May 29th at the Amphitheater of the Institute of American Indian Art, to carry out the first part of their graduation ceremonies. Prominent local clergymen, student speakers and music gave importance to the afternoon as graduates, parents and friends observed the rite. „„_ 219

Good Luck
I feel like I'm going to cry.
On the evening of June 1 at 8:00 pm the class of 1977 gathered for the last time to bid good-by to a scene and friends of the last twelve years. As the graduating Seniors of Santa Fe High filed onto the gym floor for the significant ritual of Graduation, they marched across an invisible line from student to adult. From this time forth to the end of their lives they are on their own to make of their world and lives what they can.
MISCELLANEOUS ACTIVITIES

Various activities were held throughout the school year. Students participation in these events made them an over-whelming success. As the years go by the high school activities are more popularized and more students take pride in being a part of them, and new traditions are born. Demon Land is a busy place!

SCHOOL BOARD The Santa Fe School Board, headed up by Dr. James Miller and the five Board Members, Alice Daum, J. C. Miller, Robert Sweeney, Arthur Johnson and Joe Hernandez, worked towards completion of the total SFHS Campus this year, and could take pride in the new gym and activity center which gave the students new incentive and new pride. Several Tuesday evenings a month, these dedicated people are busy with total school problems of the city, including financing and location of new schools, as well as up-keep and operation of those already in existence. Finally, they oversee the quality of education and continually deal with both teachers and citizens groups concerned with the school system.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION "Healthy body, healthy m i n d " is an old truism that is recognized in the Physical Education department of SFHS This year brought the fulfillment of the PE coaches dream with the completion of the new gym. Never mind if the floor had dead spots, at least, it was THERE! However, the arrival of the freshmen class brought them quickly back to the old routine of crowded classes and scrambling for space. Their newest dream is that all the playing fields will be finished before they retire. In the meantime, everybody gets a workout in any one of a dozen sports, and a mandatory shower at the end of it.

LIBRARIANS
No education institution is better than the library it has. Here is where what is taught in the classroom is questioned, verified, or expanded in new directions. Our librarians are constantly at work making our library better. New booklists are scanned, orders are made, periodicals of every type come by subscribtion, help is given in research, books are checked out and in, the unending headache of book theft is coped with and the film and records library and equipment is kept ready for use. In the middle of this individual students and classes crowd in and out, six periods a day. If the librarians look tired, they probably are, and with good reason!

Mathematics at SFHS includes everything from General Math to Calculus, so that students who are interested in other fields can get by with the minimum required courses. However, for those challenged by the language and abstractions of numbers, there are sufficient courses for specialization in the field. Tutorial services are offered to students who feel the need for additional help to proceed faster, or because they are lagging in their work. Chess, cribbage and other mathematical games are favorites of the department. Since there appears to be a mathematical basis for nearly everything in the world, from balancing the family checkbook, to writing music, to genetic research, there is continually growing involvement of math in many other fields of study.

With the property damage and death and injury toll from automobile accidents soaring from year to year, and with insurance rates noticeably higher for those who have not completed a course in driver education, there is ample reason for the popularity of the course at SFHS. The Demon drivers get their academic year broken into two study phases; driver and traffic safety education and first aid. During the former, students learn New Mexico traffic law and are given behind-thewheel driving experience. The second semester is given over to first aid, particularly for accident victims. This past year, another course, Motorcycle Safety and Maintenance was added to the curriculum. Driver Ed teachers have nerves of steel and they need them.
BUSINESS EDUCATION Business Education courses are more careeroriented than most other high school offerings. Typing and secretarial practice courses prepare the student for a start in the business world. To this may be added bookkeeping, shorthand, business law and marketing for more complete skills on the job. For practical experience on the financial side, the business department this year established a student credit union, set up along identical lines with other credit unions and operated by the students themselves for their fellow students. Additionally, under the leadership of Orlando Baca, the Demon Depot, a snack and supplies shop was set up on campus to serve the students and give practical business experience to the class operating it.

But to open the door of opportunity you need faith in yourselves, pride in and what you have accomplished, and the idealism to perservere. If you add to this the awareness that learning never ceases, you will indeed bring to your lives the kind of meaning and satisfaction you seek. I wish you every success on the road ahead.
Mrs. Baca keeps things going.

BUSINESS EDUCATION Traditionally, Vo-Tech is concerned with giving the student skills so that by the end of high school years, the graduate is equipped to go out and compete in the job market without post-school training. To the required business courses of typing, shorthand, business communications, and business procedures, are added classes in data processing and computer science. Each year, Vo-tech students put their classes to the practical test by getting part-time jobs in their major fields.

EXCHANGE STUDENTS
For the past several years the Exchange Students Program has been a vital part of the Santa Fe High experience. Coordinated by the counseling department, this program allows students from foreign countries to spend a year at S.F.H.S. and members of our own student body to study abroad. Exchange students this year came from South America, Europe and the Far East. This program brings cultural enrichment to our campus and helps foster friendship and understanding with others. Two SFHS students spent the '76—'77 school year abroad. Dave Dunmar lived in Sweden, while Tom Ruiz studied in Brazil.

il ni Santa Fe High School senior David Dunmar departed in July 1976 to spend a year in Sweden. David spent the first semester with the Danielsson family in Kungoln. The second semester he lived with the Sandstrone family in Luleo. David studied the Swedish language, as well as French. All classes were taught in Swedish. He found that the course of study in Sweden was similar to that at SFHS, except that the mathematics were very advanced. Dave took an active part in sports, playing with a soccer team in luleo. He also participated in basketball, and played tennis as often as possible. Dave plans to tour Europe after the end of the school year, visiting his birthplace in France, before returning to the United States. In the fall he plans to attend either U N M or New Mexico State.

F.F.A.
The Future Farmers branch chapter at Vo—Tech led a busy year during 1976—77. Among the projects carried out by the club were the sale of seedlings and bedding plants for spring planting. Members of this active club work hard to gain an understanding of our environment. Combining aesthetics, such as landscape gardening, with practical knowledge about soil and the products of the land, FFA members contribute to making the world a pleasanter place to live in.

This was the year of confusion for the Annual Staff and sponsor as they set about their appointed task of recording a year of history at SFHS. It began with the move from J to C Building the weekend school started. It continued through first semester when there was no office, no workroom and a far-away and undersized darkroom. By second semester,
