SFHS SPACES TREK

1978 PARA MANANA Santa Fe High School Santa Fe, New Mexico Enrollment: 3800

Nineteen hundred seventy-seven to seventy-eight found you on a nine months' voyage through uncharted space. It was a good venture; some pressure, occasional turbulence, but the ship and crew bore steadily on. From launch in late August, the trajectory took you swiftly away from the lingering warmth and burnished color of autumn, across the revolving days and through the frozen hush of winter to the rushing descent, light years away, in the soft newness of spring and a landing at the end of the journey. Thirty-six irretrievable weeks flashed by, landmarks on a speeding time track to new worlds; behind you the past ever receding, ahead the horizon glow. You were busy at your station and mainly unaware that you were passing through a time warp and nothing ever would be the same. How did it happen? Let's run it across the screen again where you can see . . .

Because It Was You —

You Were There!

You Dreaming, Doing

Delighting, Desiring

You, Every day —

ACTIVITIES

The years trip is usually seen, not as an over-all, but, as a series of stops and starts, little interruptions, unexpected Joys. Activities help provide this variety. From Fiestas to Junior-Senior, from a championship game to an assembly concert, working, helping, playing; activities kept SFHS occupied along the way. Each day had a variety of events and projects to choose from. No need ever to be bored, it was all there when you wanted it. If you didn't* that was all right, too.

Homecoming

20

Homecoming festivities started off with a blast despite the absence of the annual bonfire. The queen, Anna Gonzales was named at the assembly and reigned through the parade and the game. The parade had twenty entrants with honors given for originality, beauty and humor. The victory over the Albuquerque Bulldogs of 50-40, enlightened the spirit of the dance where the band, Sage Brush, played music through the night. The final couple left the doors of the activity center leaving only memories of the glorious two days. Not all is lost for there are years yet to come with homecoming, and the festivities. It's worse than it looks

Making floats Is hard work.

Sadie Hawkins

84

After much sweet talk and bribery, many girls managed to "catch" a partner for the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance sponsored by the Speech team, in the Activity Center. Various booths added an original aspect to the dance. The traditional marriage booth supplied marriage contracts, and if necessary a divorce booth was handy. The couples, dressed in appropriate costumes kicked their heels off to the music, which was provided by the band, Sage Brush.

Miss

This is great fun!

Jr. Miss is held annually at the Greer Garson Theatre. It calls out to girls who are in their senior year in high school. This year twenty five girls participated. Two nights of tension, and finally the decision. Beth Jordan was named Junior Miss. The runnerups were—Martha Lopez, Pam Roy, Deborah Sandoval and Anna Duran.

Staters Observe Pearl Harbor Pearl Harbor Day at Santa Fe High is annual observance of the anniversary of December 7, 1941; the beginning of World War II. This ceremony is managed by the Staters Club under the sponsorship of the American Legion and Auxiliary. The Navy ROTC supplied the flag raising. Speakers included former Governor Bruce King, and other known people in the community. The solemn atmosphere reminded students of a dark day in history none can personally remember.

88

Ridgewood Visits Us A group from Ridgewood, New Jersey High School came to visit us on a domestic exchange this year and were fascinated with what they found. Student Council was contacted by the Ridgewood school, and with a hospitality committee organized by Orlando Baca and Candace Gillis, sponsors, SFHS treated the visitors to trips to El Rancho De Los Golandrinas, Bandelier, San Ildefonso and the ski basin, as well as a Mexican dinner at La Cocina and a trip to the Capitol. Many new friendships were formed and future visits planned. When the bus departed a week later, the Demons had a whole new group of fans.

89

Snow Ball

80

The annual Snowball Dance was held on the crisp night of December 16th from 9:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Activity Center. Multi-colored decorations hung from the roof. The decorations were provided by the Santa Fe High Student Council, who also sponsored the delightful event. A disco band from Eastern University provided the music, making the night a successful one.

ai

Home Ec Puts On A Wedding!

A simulated wedding ceremony took place in the Home Economics building at Santa Fe High School. SFHS students Jeff Varela and Patricia Pacheco were wed by Rev. Jerome Martinez on February 23. Preparations for the wedding were planned by students from several family living classes. The reason for the wedding was to help students learn and understand the process involved in arranging a wedding.

33

Sweetheart The Senior Class, as usual, honored St. Valentine and the romantic feelings he produces with the Sweetheart Dance. The Valentines theme was carried out in sentimental red and white decorations which transformed the Activity Center into a ballroom for the night. Danceable music, the dressed-up mood and party refreshments brought out the crowd for another night to remember at SFHS.

36

Drama

36

Director, producer and ace man in a crisis, Gary Tydings, and his talented students, gave SFHS and the community variety and first-rate entertainment throughout the year. Beginning thespians presented skits and vignettes in English classes to gain acting experience, while the advanced Drama classes gave excellent performances in demanding plays including everything from farce to tragedy. The final production of the year encountered unexpected problems when all the costumes were destroyed. Disappointed? Yes. Quit? No. They just got busy and put on a different play.

37

Demon Vaudeville I

Demon Vaudeville, the traditional yearly talent show for SFHS students r a n the gamut from top notch entertainment to so-so conscientious efforts. A late spring evening found everyone in attendance where instrumental music, singing, dancing and dramatic interpretations won enthusiastic applause from fellow students in the audience. Student Council produces this activity which provides a forum for aspiring performers and a night of something different for SFHS. 39

Music In The Spring Choir Director Marylinda Gutierrez and her singers presented an excellent concert late in the spring. Characterized by balance and control, the Choir groups sang a variety of classical and contemporary music that delighted the ears of all who heard them. Practice and the joy of singing gives the vocalists an ability that will carry many of them on to careers in music.

Pan American Dinner Newly back from an exciting t r i p to Mazatlan, the Pan American Club spent early May preparing for the annual Pan American dinner which combines the exotic decorations traditional in Mexico and the exciting cuisine for which it is famous. The memorable evening gave the formally dressed members an opportunity to socialize and applaud the presentation of the Pan American Queen who had been elected by student vote. Sponsor Jane Zinn planned and worked with the students.

Senior Awards

Senior Awards Assembly recognizes the outstanding achievements of members of the Senior class. Scholarships earned and other academic awards are announced at this time. Departmental honors are given to students whose activities and participation made significant gains for either the individual or the group. Vo Tech awards were given, and the final honor of the affair was the granting of the Barney Petchesky award to the outstanding senior boy and girl of SFHS.

• Navy • Ball

46

Navy Ball was THE social function of the year for all members of NJROTC. Held at the Kirtland Base Officer's Club, the May dinner-dance was a glamorous evening for all who went. Captain Jack Herrick, Commanding Officer, and Mrs. Herrick took the lead in the social festivities, where music, good food and fun sped the hours past. The military dress occasion, gave the cadets a glimpse into the strength and tradition of the Navy. The strong academic program of NJROTC is no more valuable, perhaps, than the social ease and public confidence instilled by the classes. Navy Ball is an exciting part of this experience. 47

48

Junior - Senior Prom is the one dance of the year that everyone dreams and hopes and plans on. The prettiest gowns and the handsomest tuxes are selected, reservations are made at the most elegant affordable restaurant and dates are set up weeks in advance. The activity center is transformed into a glittering ballroom by the decorating committee and a top band is engaged. The night of nights passes to swiftly and before anyone is ready, the last slow dance is played and the dance is over. However, for those determined to make the most out of the remainder of the night, there is still, possibly, a late show, and, naturally, breakfast which can prolong the magic until the first glow of dawn.

Sixteen years of school has ended and Graduation symbolically recognizes this fact. Seniors gather nervously outside while family and friends settle themselves inside the gym. Caps are adjusted, gown are smoothed, some talk a lot, others are quiet. A milestone has been reached and change is at hand. Bess Pontslers' baton is raised and the traditional, stately march leads in the graduates. Speeches, flowers, handshakes, kisses, tears and cheers. The Governor stands for his son and the final prayer with all the rest and a quicker march pulls the long lines of blue-robed young men and women back out—out of the gym, out of the school, and out into the world!

Royal Blues

Royal Blues are the doers; the ones who set the sights and establish the standards. They do things better than the rest, whether it is sports, grades or leadership in office. They take advantage of what is offered and put it together. In the long sweep of a lifetime, they have already gotten someplace. School may be only a way-station, but the road leads or. toward another, higher level.

7 8 Was Great

MOTTO: Yesterday is already a dream and tomorrow is only a vision, but today well lived makes yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope. FLOWER: Red rose COLORS: Rainbow SONG: Yesterday

Yesterday Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away Now it looks as though they're here to stay Oh I believe in yesterday Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be There's a shadow hanging over me Oh yesterday came suddenly Why she had to go I don't know She wouldn't say I said something wrong now I long for yesterday

Yesterday love was such an easy game to play Now I need a place to hide away Oh I believe in Yesterday Why she had to go I don't know She wouldn't say I said something wrong now I long for yesterday Yesterday love was such an easy game to play Now I need a place to hide away Oh I believe in yesterday. Seniors

DOLORES ABEYTĂ‚ MARCELLA ABEYTA JOE ADDINGTON CHAROLTTE ALARID MARIE ALARID

Seniors were torn between joy and apprehension. All at once, the space out there looked a little larger, colder, and less certain than the familiar warmth of friends and halls and walls at Santa Fe High. Unexpectedly, what we were leaving was endowed with new value. We could not pass this way again. Senior activities had an aura of nostalgia even as they occurred. Senior week was a time when there was both too much and too little of everything. Feelings were nearer the surface, events edged with a special vividness. For a place that was just taken for granted for four years, it was surprising to find it suddenly so well loved in leaving. What will fill the void?

IN MEMORIAM CHARLOTTE MARTINEZ 1961 - 1978

Sophs

Sophomores can view the world with some satisfaction; they have survived their Freshman year and better days are just ahead. However, a mid-year inventory of self accomplishments usually brings to attention the fact that there still remains a vast reach of unexplored school space to be navigated. Even life's disappointments have a way of bringing a clearer vision of what the trip is all about. Sophomores elect to go in a positive direction. 140

Life is confusion to the incoming Freshman. The campus is big and complicated, the fellow students are many and mostly strangers, the classes are difficult. Freshmen learn to survive, and they survive on the hope that this, too, shall pass, and that with faith and work, a miracle will transform them into Sophomores. Nine months later, their trust is usually justified and they leave the sa field to the next crop.

Following losses at Los Alamos and Academy, the Demons streaked to 10 consecutive wins before dropping a 4-1 decision to Santa Fe Prep at the state tournament. Santa Fe closed out a highly successful season by beating Los Alamos 1-0 for a final 3rd place standing at state.

Volleyball Coach Bertha Mefford Hogan once again guided the Demonette volleyball team through a brilliant season. The Demonettes breezed through the year with a 17-1 record, losing only to Roswell. Seniors Ronnie Rodriguez, Leonard Ortiz, Darrell Espy, and Pat Walker along with junior Roby Wren, comprised the starting line-up that rolled up 17 victories before a loss at Albuquerque High. The Demons rolled over cross town rival St. Mikes 62-49 and 75-50 and captured the Poe Corn Tournament in Roswell with a thrilling 61-59 victory over Roswell-Goddard. Coach Leonard Roybal's forces also captured the Capital City Tournament with a 58-57 squeaker over Los Alamos. State Champions

In recognizing the Santa Fe Demons as the New Mexico Class AAAA State Basketball champions, JOE NAMATH'8 NATIONAL PREP SPORTS MAGAZINE named the Demons as the number five team in the Southwest. The same magazine also named Coach Leonard Roybal as the Southwest's High School coach of the year. In the balloting for all-state honors, Ronnie Rodriguez, Roby Wren, and Darrell Espy garnered all-state honors while Pat Walker and Leonard Ortiz topped the Honorable Mention list. Seniors Espy and Walker were furthered honored by being picked to compete in the annual North-South All Star game. Espy and Rodriguez competed in the Wendy's All-Star Classic which featured the top high school starts from eight southwestern states.

In District 1AAAA action, Santa Fe logged an 11-3 record, losing only to Farming-ton twice, and West Mesa. The Demonettes also swept cross-town rival St. Mikes by 65-39 and 57-89 scores. At the Cibola Classic in Albuquerque, the Demonettes placed fourth, beating Reserve and losing to Cibola and Carlsbad.

In the District tournament, Santa Fe was seeded second and drew a bye into the second round where they disposed of Gallup 51-43. In the semi-finals the Demonettes were upended by West Mesa 48-41. Although being plagued by personnel problems, coaches Oil Mier and Mike Lujan led the Demon grapplers to their best finish ever at the state AAAA tournament, placing seventh. The loss of six varsity members for various reasons forced the mat-men to forfeit several weights and fill others with inexperienced JV members. The team struggled to a 7-8 dual meet record, 8-4 in district, powered mainly by four lightweight standouts. 105 lb. state champ Larry Phyfe 81-1, 188 lb. runner-up Oaeton Falance 29-4, 119 lb. third placer Charlie Fitch 88-8, and 98 lb. fourth placer Paul Ortiz 85-6-1. The demonette swimmers finished sixth out of fifteen teams, while the boys finished seventh.

Skiing

With an abundance of snow falling on nearby peaks, SFHS students took to the slopes with their skis, boots and poles in hand. With a wealth of enthusiasm, they sailed off the crests of jumps and paralleled down the slopes of downey white. Neither broken bones nor freezing cold could deter them from their pursuit of one of Santa Fe's most popular sports. The active participation in skiing this winter was a tribute to the dedication of the student skiers, since the Santa Fe Basin did not sponsor the traditional school program this year.

Bad weather along with inexperience were the main factors in this year's mediocre Baseball season. After reigning for a year as the 1977 state A AAA champs, Coaches Joe Martinez and Mike Vialpondo fell on hard times as the Demon moundsmen plummeted to an 11-13 record, 6-8 in district play. In the yearly struggles with cross-town rival St. Mikes, the Demons did manage to drop the Horsemen 5-1 and 5-4. Rodeo

Under the leadership of Vo-Tech, Principal, Fernando Ramirez and advisory of Ben Rael, the SFHS Senior English teacher who is also a nationally accredited rodeo judge, the Demon Rodeo Team entered competition all across the state. In early spring, they also hosted their own rodeo at the local arena. The cowboys and cowgirls rode for the prizes in a variety of events including barrel racing, goat tying, bull riding, calf roping and bronc riding. The Demon team ranked high in all events and showed the class that will lead some on to competition in the major rodeo circuits nationally.

Second semester saw the 5th annual Sangre de Cristo table tennis tournament with some fifty players entered. Late in April the two finalists, Reynaldo Roybal and Bernie Romero met in the showdown with Bernie winning the SFHS Championship. Runners up after Reynaldo were Harold Stacy, third, and Fred Lopez, fourth.

A POSITIVE VIEW OF YOURSELF PEOPLE WHO HAVE A LOW ESTIMATE OF THEIR ABILITY TO COPE WITH PROBLEMS AND CHANGE USUALLY SAY THINGS LIKE: "I DON'T HAVE TIME," "IF I HAD MORE HELP I COULD DO IT," "I WORK HARDER THAN ANYONE ELSE," "I JUST CAN'T DO EVERYTHING." EACH OF THESE STATEMENTS IS A NEGATIVE VIEW OF ONE'S CAPACITY TO COPE WITH WHATEVER PROBLEM IS AT HAND. THESE STATEMENTS MEAN, "I'M AFRAID OF NOT BEING ABLE TO SUCCEED." POSITIVE PEOPLE SEEM TO BE THOSE WHO VIEW CHANGE AND ADJUSTMENTS AS OPPORTUNITIES FOR RENEWAL AND GROWTH. THE POSITIVE PERSON HAS DEVELOPED AN ATTITUDE TOWARD PROBLEMS AS CHALLENGES TO A STRONG SELF RATHER THAN AS THREATS.

Mrs. Fidel or Mrs. Harris must decide whether to call the doctor, call the parents, or call the attendance officer to cope with the more serious problems.

Resource Room The resource room, under the direction of Mrs. Susan Rael, offers help and guidance for those encountering learning difficulties or lagging in their grade level. Here the student is helped to master better study habits and develop necessary basic skills.

Secretaries The administrative offices, counseling, attendance and business departments are kept running efficiently through the dedicated work of our school secretaries. Irene Aranda, Cleo Baca, Bertha Garcia, Flora Moya, Patsy Montoya, Evelyn Pacheco, Ann Patty, Mary Roybal, Yolanda Roybal and Martha Wegelin provide expertise in record keeping, financial accounts, the telephone switchboard, correspondence and information. Cafeteria ยง Custodians

Well balanced meals attractively served are the daily standard of our cafeteria. Our expert cooks prepare the food in the cafeteria kitchen and the mouth-watering smells that waft across campus by late morning are nearly irresistible. With two back to back lunch hours, service is rapid and generous portions are enjoyed in the comfort of our spacious Activity Center. The heating, air conditioning, plumbing, electricity, and structural repairs for the SFHS plant are ably supervised by John Padilla, our maintenance department head. Every call for him on the intercom signals a crisis somewhere on campus.

Introduction to Nursing serves as a first course designed for students who plan on a career in nursing. Standard hospital procedures are studied and experience is gained in taking temperature, pulse and blood pressure. Pre-School is for those who are interested in the teaching field. These students first receive instruction in classroom procedure and theory and are then given the opportunity to work with teachers in actual pre-school classes. Special Ed is focused on particular learning problems and exceptional needs, providing instruction and basis skills to enable students to utilize their abilities most effectively.

English - Learning Center Standard academic courses are emphasized at Vo-Tech. Completion of the required hours of English, History and Math is necessary for graduation and a must for any job seeker. In the English Department, the Learning Center is operated to assist any student who has difficulty with reading or is falling behind in class work that his records indicate he is capable of performing. Literature, U. S. History, and the Metric system keep students interested even when the work is poured on.

Organizations are shared time and interests where ideas and efforts accomplish goals for all. This sharing gives a spirit of unity and a sense of belonging to those who participate. Organizations teach some of the requirements of the structure of society - how man, a social being, needs to work with those around him to improve the life experience of all. Somewhere out in space, there probably is a club that studies the earth. Until they get here, our own are a pretty good place to be. 881

Since 1962, students from other countries have been involved in our exchange program. Organized by the Counseling Department, students from SFHS are sent abroad as well as our receiving foreign ones. The opportunities for friendship and broader understanding of different cultures is of inestimable educational benefit to all involved in this travel-study program. Octavio Somvano, above, from Mexico, is typical of the bright young people we receive.

Our exchange students entered into SFHS campus life with enthusiasm, taking full loads of classes and participating in sports and activities. In spite of any "language barrier", excelled in whatever was undertaken and made lasting friends throughout the school. Jesper Holm took the opportunity to join the

Communications class and became a familiar figure videotaping sports events and assemblies. Morten Kristensen won the honor of being selected for Royal Blues. All of the Mexico and South American students excelled in soccer and several were on the varsity team. Ruben Dario Salazar won a berth

on Varsity Tennis, also, and made it to the finals of the SFHS Table Tennis tournament. Jairo Gomez joined Para Manana as a photographer. This involvement, which was shared by all the visiting students, is what makes the program so worth while and keeps it going year after year.

The Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps unit at SFHS, commanded by Captain John Herrick and Chief George Wright, enables students to learn about Electronics, Navigation, Oceonography, Seamanship, and Gunnery. But most importantly, the NJROTC unit teaches "leadership." Leadership in the NJROTC is very important in determining one's rank. Grades, attitude, and military capabilities also determine one's rank or superiority. NJROTC is very challenging for the students. Students feel proud because they are treated equally and are recognized as an individual. This year, some members of the NJROTC unit went to San Diego over the Spring break. They went to Leadership school, Morse Code school, and Corpman school. They also went on a ship, learned about many of the mechanical parts on a ship. Discipline is very important in the NJROTC unit. The students experience a challenging, and unforgettable year.

Model U.N, Model U.M. strives to promote awareness of the role of the United Nations Assembly in international affairs. Under the sponsorship of June Burke, the club works each year to hold a model working session based on the actual issues and global problems currently before the U.N. in New York. Area school share in the session, with each school or group taking the role of one nation and speaking for it. These yearly conferences are held at the State Capitol.

Grass Club This year, Mr. Ortega and his Grass Club continued the clubs' on-going project of the landscaping and beautification of the SFHS campus. The Biology building was the focus of this years effort where a fence was erected to protect the shrubs, pinon trees and rockwork of the newly developed area. The walls, benches, trees and other planting and construction work done by Mr. Ortegas olub are a credit to them and the school. The ruined lawn by the administration building is no credit to those who helped destroy it and is a loss to those who enjoy the pleasure and relaxation a lawn offers. 888

Credit Union The Second Student Federal Credit Union provides SFHS students with the services generally associated with a savings and loan organization. After making a minimum deposit of cash, the student establishes his account where he may make deposits or withdrawals, or if necessary, receive a loan based on his credit rating. Accounts earned a healthy 6% interest, with a lid of $300 on borrowing. Run by and for the SFHS students, much practical experience is gained.

Pan American The "Pan American" club at Santa Fe High School is set up to establish good relations between the people of Latin America and the United States. To work toward this goal, members of the club have a cultural exchange trip to Mexico annually. This past year, Pan Am went to Mazatlan. They experienced speaking a different language, eating different foods, and living in a different cultural community. They learned about the different area customs, and viewed many historical sites. During their stay at an ocean resort, they enjoyed swimming, tanning, and other beach activities. Pan Am members earned enough money to finance their trip by sponsoring a school dance, having bake and tamale sales, and selling candy. The years' Pan American queen, Theresa Quintana, was honored at the annual formal Pan Am dinner held on 808 May 17 in the activity center.

Monica Roybal who lighted up our lives too briefly, is gone from us. In our loss and grief, we glimpsed a basic truth that the human heart and spirit, alone, can bridge the empty spaces of existence and enable us to walk with courage our life ahead. Monica has gone far ahead of us in space and time, but she reaches out and touches the lives of all of us at our best. She is gone from us, but her laughter remains in our ears, her love warm in our hearts, and we know she exists still . . . Somewhere.

They say lightning never strikes twice, but the Varsity Cheerleaders found out, heartbreakingly, that it does. The second irreparable blow fell on Charlie Martinez; beautiful, buoyant and alive one day, the next, gone forever. There is a reason in the universe, but not knowing what it is intensifies the pain. Still Charlie would have wanted the cheers to go on . . .

Under the enthusiastic leadership of sponsor Orlando Baca, FBLĂ‚ re-proved the old adage that nothing succeeds like success. This club, made up of Business students, ended up organizing, participating in, or contributing to half of the projects and activities on Campus. Their major venture was the Demon Depot, a shop on campus where supplies, snacks, Demon banners, T-shirts and other school-related items were sold during lunch hour. In running this store, the students gained first-hand knowledge of how to handle a business, from stocking the merchandise to dealing with shoplifting, and from work assignments to distribution of profit. Through the latter, SFHS gained two distinctive murals; the Demon figure in the gym and the Demon Country banner across the top of the library. FBLA has it made.

Honor Society

Staters win their positions in the club through competitive try-outs where each candidate is judged on appearance, poise, and speech. Under the sponsorship of the American Legion, Staters participate in a state-wide convention to study the function and operation of government in a democratic society.

Members of Honor Society are chosen by their academic records and represent the most dedicated and talented students at SFHS. A lowering of the grade average can result in removal from the club which is a member of the National Honor Society organization. In addition to keeping up their studies, members are involved in community projects related to education.

ADS Your hometown is the one station in t h e world w h e r e you a r e based and where you feel a sense of belonging. Businesses, churches, government buildings, houses, schools; all a r e given a special personal c h a r a c t e r by the people you know in them. These people a r e your neighbors, friends and relations. S a n t a Fe, no longer a small town, reaches beyond the space of city limits from the dim reaches of time past to tomorrows' promise. But t r a d i t i o n a l western openness and a solid sense of community a r e still t h e foundations of your existence. Outer space is cold and sometimes t u r n s you back, but a hometown always waits in welcome to t a k e you in again.
