COURSE WEBSITES Teachers of Target FCE will find lots of advice for teaching exams and some great downloadable documents with extra ideas for classes on the course website. Students can try an interactive practice test and check their results online. There is plenty of help for exam preparation including a video of the FCE speaking exam.

Learning Platforms The Learning Platforms offer the best of formal and informal learning and have three main sections. The easyto-use portals offer author interviews, downloadable sample units and fun learning activities for students. Students can participate by commenting on the blogs, and will enjoy belonging to an online community of English learners.

Teachers can also register students for the Virtual Learning Environments (VLE). Teachers can assign one of the hundreds of specially developed tasks to their students or create their own. These resources allow teachers to set time limits and pass marks for exercises. Scores are recorded in a grade book, allowing teachers to monitor students’ progress.

The Test Studios allow teachers to create their own interactive tests online or on paper. Teachers can create tests by unit, a block of units or the whole book. It is also possible to choose whether to upload tests to a the VLE. For the unit tests they can decide which language points they want to test. For the block and book tests, teachers select how many questions they want to include and the Test Studio will randomly generate a test focusing on the skills areas selected. The interactive tests are provided as zip files and are SCORM compliant.

The Vodcasts series has been designed to correspond to both New American Framework and American Big Picture. Activities for the vodcasts are regularly updated, both for online and classroom use. Tasks are also provided in which students have to make their own video based on what they have seen in the vodcasts.

Digital Books Our Digital Books are an invaluable learning aid in the classroom and are compatible with any interactive whiteboard. Ideal for presenting resources to the entire class, there are onscreen answers for group feedback sessions. There are many options for teachers to customize pages and add their own links and resources, ensuring that students remain interested and engaged throughout the lesson.

APPS Our constantly growing app collection includes downloadable apps to complement many of our Richmond Primary Readers. Complete with audio and animation, the Richmond Primary Readers apps engage children and bring the stories alive. Children will love looking at the pictures, listening to the story and reading along. Learners will have fun creating their own printable drawings with the resizable stickers, which they can e-mail to their friends.

Teaching tips for Preschool: Today’s preschool classrooms are more dynamic, investigative and thought-provoking than ever before! They require educators, children and content that provides them with the language and life for the ever-evolving world in which we interact and live in.

Activities:

Keep everything as simple and short as possible. These students do not have long attention spans and are easily distracted, so you should try doing the most interesting activity, with the most intriguing props, at all times.

Songs/Gestures:

Children at this age do well with songs and body/facial gestures. You can have chants/rhymes/songs for each part of the day to help them learn and remember certain vocabulary. For instance, a morning chant/song might include, ”getting up, brush your teeth”, ”eating breakfast”, etc.

Stories:

While your students will not be reading much in your class, they may enjoy hearing some stories, especially if the lesson is during a quieter part of their day. The best stories for this age group, regardless of the activity you have in mind, are repetitive.

Practice sheets:

You can still use practice sheets to reinforce/recycle material and assess comprehension. For example, you can ask students to draw a comprehension picture while you tell a story.

Teaching tips for Primary: Developing Language Skills: Tips for Speaking Activities

Speaking is a productive language skill that requires a lot of practice to develop effectively. Speaking activities need thorough planning to be successful. As teachers, we want our students to be engaged and participate actively in the activities we do in class. As in many human activities, the reason for doing something is very important and speaking is no exception. Our students need to have a reason to speak. We want to share some tips you can use to motivate your students to speak:

Use topics which are relevant and interesting for them. You can

ask them to post on your class website or bog which topics they want to discuss in the class during that week or month.

Never use topics connected directly to their parents. You never

know if you might be touching a raw nerve or unleashing negative feelings. Better to ask questions such as: who is your favorite family member? Why do you admire him/her? Etc.

Involve your students in the preparation of the speaking activities. You can assign a team every week to plan, organize and set the

speaking activity. Of course, they will need help and training from you at the beginning in order to be able to do this.

Provide your students with the vocabulary they need so that they

can carry out the speaking activity without hesitating or asking for words they don’t know.

Give them authentic, real-life tasks which they are likely to

encounter in the world outside the classroom. This builds up their language confidence and proficiency.

Step aside. Learn to listen to their language and observe the activity.

Tips and strategies ICT

Incorporating ICT tools can increase motivation and retention with our students. Consider a class review for each unit with YouTube videos when possible and when you don’t have videos available for the level or content; consider making your own video summary and uploading it to the class website.

Realia

Interacting with real objects or associating content to real objects in a classroom setting can be conductive to acquisition and facilitates learning for tactile/ kinesthetic learners. Using real objects especially in science can consolidate understanding.

Project based learning

Assigning projects within the bilingual class is a new tendency which is proving to be very effective in motivating students and facilitating autonomous learning. Group and pair projects can facilitate peer-teaching instances.

CLIL

Content Language Integrated Learning or CLIL is paramount in English programs as it instigates critical thinking related to cross curricular content. CLIL should be considered in all English programs as it supports the school curriculum and links common skills and content between subjects through English. Students today are expected to become more responsible for their own learning. They are required to take on a more active role in the learning process. As teachers, we can help them develop strategies to become more autonomous both inside and outside the classroom. These are some tips that you can use in your lessons:

Organize activities that engage them in the use of electronic dictionaries or other digital

tools. These digital media are motivating for 21st Century learners and will encourage them to work on their own.

Give your students choices so they can take the lead on deciding what happens in the

classroom. For example, give them a choice between two authors to read, or two characters to find out, or two topics to research, etc.

Set project-based work to be carried out outside the classroom. Set this up in the classroom and then let them do the rest of the work on their own. You could organize them into teams to carry out the research and assign each of them different roles and responsibilities. Provide learners with plenty of opportunities to assess themselves and

their peers in pairs and groups. Train them in the use of rubrics so they can do this objectively.

Take your group to the computer lab as often as you can so they can work on self-access materials to practice language items. Promote peer-support work. Instead of you giving explanations, always check if one of your students can do it and give them the chance to teach their peers.

Maybe you’re connected to more people than you realize. ‘Six degrees of separation’ is a theory that suggests that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person through five other people. The theory first appeared in 1929 in a short story called Chains but it didn’t become popular until the 1990s when the film Six Degrees of Separation, starring Will Smith, was released. The film inspired a game called ‘Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon’. The aim of the game was to link any actor to Kevin Bacon through no more than six film connections. LEARNING PLATFORMS The Learning Platforms offer the best of formal and informal learning and have three main sections. The easyto-use portals offer author interviews, downloadable sample units and fun learning activities for students. Students can participate by commenting on the blogs, and will enjoy belonging to an online community of English learners.

Teachers can also register students for the Virtual Learning Environments (VLE). Teachers can assign one of the hundreds of specially developed tasks to their students or create their own. These resources allow teachers to set time limits and pass marks for exercises. Scores are recorded in a grade book, allowing teachers to monitor students’ progress.

The Test Studios allow teachers to create their own interactive tests online or on paper. Teachers can create tests by unit, a block of units or the whole book. It is also possible to choose whether to upload tests to a the VLE. For the unit tests they can decide which language points they want to test. For the block and book tests, teachers select how many questions they want to include and the Test Studio will randomly generate a test focusing on the skills areas selected. The interactive tests are provided as zip files and are SCORM compliant.

The Vodcasts series has been designed to correspond to both New American Framework and American Big Picture. Activities for the vodcasts are regularly updated, both for online and classroom use. Teaching tips for Preschool: Today’s preschool classrooms are more dynamic, investigative and thought-provoking than ever before! They require educators, children and content that provides them with the language and life for the ever-evolving world in which we interact and live in.

Activities:

Keep everything as simple and short as possible. These students do not have long attention spans and are easily distracted, so you should try doing the most interesting activity, with the most intriguing props, at all times.

Songs/Gestures:

Children at this age do well with songs and body/facial gestures. You can have chants/rhymes/songs for each part of the day to help them learn and remember certain vocabulary. For instance, a morning chant/song might include, ”getting up, brush your teeth”, ”eating breakfast”, etc.

Stories:

While your students will not be reading much in your class, they may enjoy hearing some stories, especially if the lesson is during a quieter part of their day. The best stories for this age group, regardless of the activity you have in mind, are repetitive.

Practice sheets:

You can still use practice sheets to reinforce/recycle material and assess comprehension. For example, you can ask students to draw a comprehension picture while you tell a story.

Teaching tips for Primary: Developing Language Skills: Tips for Speaking Activities

Speaking is a productive language skill that requires a lot of practice to develop effectively. Speaking activities need thorough planning to be successful. As teachers, we want our students to be engaged and participate actively in the activities we do in class. As in many human activities, the reason for doing something is very important and speaking is no exception. Our students need to have a reason to speak. We want to share some tips you can use to motivate your students to speak:

Use topics which are relevant and interesting for them. You can

ask them to post on your class website or bog which topics they want to discuss in the class during that week or month.

Never use topics connected directly to their parents. You never

know if you might be touching a raw nerve or unleashing negative feelings. Better to ask questions such as: who is your favorite family member? Why do you admire him/her? Etc.

Involve your students in the preparation of the speaking activities. You can assign a team every week to plan, organize and set the

speaking activity. Of course, they will need help and training from you at the beginning in order to be able to do this.

Provide your students with the vocabulary they need so that they

can carry out the speaking activity without hesitating or asking for words they don’t know.

Give them authentic, real-life tasks which they are likely to

encounter in the world outside the classroom. This builds up their language confidence and proficiency.

Step aside. Learn to listen to their language and observe the activity.

Teaching tips for Secondary: Develop Autonomy

Students today are expected to become more responsible for their own learning. They are required to take on a more active role in the learning process. As teachers, we can help them develop strategies to become more autonomous both inside and outside the classroom. These are some tips that you can use in your lessons:

Organize activities that engage them in the use of electronic dictionaries or other digital

tools. These digital media are motivating for 21st Century learners and will encourage them to work on their own.

Give your students choices so they can take the lead on deciding what happens in the

classroom. For example, give them a choice between two authors to read, or two characters to find out, or two topics to research, etc.

Set project-based work to be carried out outside the classroom. Set this up in the classroom and then let them do the rest of the work on their own. You could organize them into teams to carry out the research and assign each of them different roles and responsibilities. Provide learners with plenty of opportunities to assess themselves and

their peers in pairs and groups. Train them in the use of rubrics so they can do this objectively.

Take your group to the computer lab as often as you can so they can work on self-access materials to practice language items. Promote peer-support work. Instead of you giving explanations, always check if one of your students can do it and give them the chance to teach their peers.

Six Degrees of Separation How many people do you know? Maybe you’re connected to more people than you realize. ‘Six degrees of separation’ is a theory that suggests that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person through five other people. The theory first appeared in 1929 in a short story called Chains but it didn’t become popular until the 1990s when the film Six Degrees of Separation, starring Will Smith, was released. The film inspired a game called ‘Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon’. The aim of the game was to link any actor to Kevin Bacon through no more than six film connections. The game then inspired Kevin Bacon to start a website called SixDegrees.org, a charitable social network. Bacon invited celebrities to promote their favourite charities on the site. They include Nicole Kidman (UNIFEM), Ashley Judd (YouthAIDS), Hilary Duff (Kids with a Cause) and Jessica Simpson (Operation Smile). Integrating websites and learning platforms not only makes your class more motivating and engaging it also facilitates necessary ICT exposure and also instill necessary ICT skills for this generation. Suggestion: Use YouTube to present new content or as a review tool.

Grammar support

Not popular in current methodology but definitely an essential aspect when related to the productive skills. For speaking and writing, grammar is a necessary element which must at times be consolidated quickly to ensure steady progression. Grammar support books often fill gaps in learning and establish a necessary base to build upon. Suggestion: Identify grammar gaps in learning with specific students and prepare remedial activities based on this and assign as take home assignments.

Dictionaries

This skill also helps students identify the text type quickly which aids in anticipating information, genre and tone. Scanning: Students learn to scan a text quickly looking for specific information or facts. Scanning helps students answer reading comprehension questions quickly and with more accuracy.
