Os sabores do engenho O tema da capa
desta edição é um dos mais festejados eventos da cidade, o Festival da Pinga, que já passou da vigésima edição. O festival acontece de 18 a 21 de agosto, e os visitantes podem apreciar dos mais tradicionais aos mais inusitados sabores. Pinga pura, envelhecida, caramelada, de banana, com canela... São muitas. Sem contar as deliciosas comidas típicas para acompanhar a cachaça. Paraty, que entrou para a história do Brasil como exportadora de aguardente, tendo nos tempos idos, 160 engenhos em pleno funcionamento, conta hoje com apenas sete alambiques. Mas o número reduzido só serviu para tornar o processo ainda mais especial. A característica artesanal da fabricação persistiu, e mais do que um produto comercial, a cachaça de Paraty representa um elo com as antigas tradições. O fato é que tanto a cachaça, quanto a própria cidade, são capazes de nos levar a um delicioso estado de embriaguez. Coisas de Paraty.

FIavors of the sugar mill
The Festival of Cachaça, the theme on this edition’s cover, is one of the most praised events of the city, now beyond its 20th edition. The festival happens from August 18 to the 21, and visitors can appreciate the most traditional to the most unexpected flavors! Cachaça, pure, aged, caramel flavored, made with bananas, with cinnamon… the flavors are many. Not to mention the delicious typical dishes that will be available to go with it. Paraty, which entered the history of Brazil as an exporter of cachaça and had in bygone times, 160 sugar mills in full production, has today only seven distilleries. The reduced number, however, has only made the manufacturing process more special. The characteristic artisan production persisted, and rather than a commercial product, Paraty’s cachaça is a link to old traditions. Truth be told, both the cachaça and the city itself are able to bring us to a delicious state of inebriation. It’s a Ana Maria Paraty thing. Pavão

Edith rizzo and her inspiration: paraty
A artista recentemente premiada pela TV Rio Sul conta sua história e sua ligação com Paraty. The artist, who was recently honored by Rio Sul TV, tells her story and talks about the connection she has with Paraty.
Tudo começou com o professor Luis Botto, que mostrou à jovem
artista que pintura tem tudo a ver com matemática, matéria que é umas das paixões de Edith Rizzo, recentemente premiada pela TV Rio Sul como autora de um dos melhores trabalhos apresentados por artistas plásticos, moradores na região de cobertura da emissora. “Este prêmio deu um novo estímulo a minha carreira; havia muitos trabalhos concorrendo e ser selecionada foi uma grande alegria. Passei um período bastante difícil com a doença de minha filha, amor da minha vida, mas agora está tudo bem”, conta Edith, ainda demonstrando muita emoção. Ela explica que há dezenove anos está na região, sempre no eixo Paraty e Angra dos Reis. Entre essas cidades ela aprimorou sua técnica e se destacou, sendo convidada pela apresentadora Xuxa a se apresentar em rede nacional. “Foi uma época muito produtiva na minha carreira; o presídio da Ilha Grande tinha sido desativado e muitos restaurantes e pousadas foram montados. Eu trabalhava o dia inteiro para atender à demanda”. O estilo adotado por Edith é a pintura acadêmica, que tem como característica o longo tempo exigido para concluir uma obra. “Levei doze dias para pintar Manhã Caiçara – o quadro premiado; e, assim mesmo, porque eu tinha prazo para entregar. Normalmente levaria trinta dias trabalhando em óleo sobre tela”, conta ela, acrescentando que gosta de trabalhar sem pressa, curtindo todos os detalhes. O quadro Manhã Caiçara vai ficar exposto na sede da emissora, em Rezende, durante um ano e sua imagem será utilizada em comerciais e chamadas para a região. Edith nasceu em Santa Adélia, São Paulo; depois fez um curso de desenho em Catanduva, também em São Paulo. Em Londrina, no Paraná, fez o curso de matemática na UEL, Universidade Estadual de Londrina. E, também em Londrina, participou do Projeto Barracão de Artes e Ofícios, espaço de educação e produção cultural em artes plásticas, poesia e teatro.

Everything started with her teacher Luis Botto, who showed the young artist that painting and math – one of Edith Rizzo’s passions – have a lot in common. She has recently been given an award by Rio Sul TV as the creator of one of the best art works presented by artists living within the area covered by the station. “This prize has given a fresh boost to my career. There were many works competing, and to have my work selected was a great joy. I’ve had a tough time because of my daughter’s disease. She is the love of my life, and fortunately everything is fine now.” says Edith, full of emotion. She told us that she’s been in the area between Angra dos Reis and Paraty for nineteen years. There, she improved her technique and then became noticed by Xuxa, who hosted her own popular show, and was invited to present her work on national network television. “It was a very productive time in my career, Ilha Grande prison had just been deactivated, and many restaurants and hotels were opened on the island. I worked day and night to meet the demand.” Edith uses techniques from academic painting where it usually takes a long time to finish a piece. “It took me twelve days to paint “Manhã Caiçara” (the picture awarded), and this was because I had to deliver it on a deadline. Otherwise this oil on canvas would normally have taken thirty days to complete.” she says, adding that what she really likes is to work without rushing, enjoying every detail. “Manhã Caiçara” will be exhibited in the station head office, in Resende, for a year, and its image will be used in commercials and local advertising. Edith was born in Santa Adelia, SP. She studied drawing in Catanduva, SP, and graduated in mathematics at UEL, University of Londrina, Parana. In Londrina, she also took part in a project called “Barração de Artes e Ofícios”, a space for education and cultural production of arts, poetry and drama. Besides painting, Edith also creates bronze sculptures - “It is another passion of mine, and here in Paraty, I intend to resume my work” says the artist, vigorously.
Além de pintura, Edith dedica-se à escultura em bronze. “Essa é minha outra paixão; aqui em Paraty pretendo retomar os trabalhos”, conta a artista, revigorada. Em 1992 ela chegou à Vila do Abraão, na Ilha Grande e seu trabalho, dez anos depois, ilustrou o Almanaque Ecológico da Ilha Grande, de Elias Lins Mello o que a levou a fazer sua primeira exposição no Rio de Janeiro. “Isso foi muito importante, porque logo depois, meu trabalho foi selecionado para constar do catálogo Arte Carioca 2002”, comenta a pintora e escultora que chegou a expor, inclusive, em Portugal. Edith mora em Paraty há oito anos e seu projeto é continuar na cidade, que a inspira, e agora estimula. “Apesar de gostar de pintar quadros surrealistas, de me encantar com o mundo dos sonhos, sinto que com os anos de litoral, e lá se vão dezenove anos, me sinto cada vez mais envolvida com a vida caiçara. Encanta-me a simplicidade dos hábitos, das comidas e tenho prazer em estar com essa gente forte, que respeita o mar e interage com ele. Por isso foi tão importante ter sido selecionada para a Galeria Rio Sul, com um quadro que fala deste tema. O que mais quero agora é pintar o mar, sua gente e seus costumes”, conclui a nossa talentosa pintora. P

In 1992 she arrived in Vila do Abraão in Ilha Grande, and the work she produced was used, ten years later, to illustrate the book “Almanaque Ecológico da Ilha Grande”, by Elias Lins Mello, which led her to make her first exhibit in Rio de Janeiro. “This was very important for my career, because soon after that my work was selected to be part of the catalog Carioca Art 2002,” says the painter and sculptor, who has also exhibited her work in Portugal. Edith has been living in Paraty for eight years, and she intends to continue living in this city that inspires and stimulates her work. “Even though I like doing surrealist paintings, and have always been delighted by the world of dreams, I feel that these nineteen years I’ve been living on the coast have made me more and more involved with caiçara life. I’m charmed by the simplicity of their daily life and by the food. It is a great pleasure to be with these powerful people, who respect and interact with the ocean. That’s why it was so important to be selected by the Rio Sul gallery for a painting that reflects this theme. What I want now, more than ever, is to paint the sea, her people, and their tradition,” concludes this talented painter. P

De 18 a 21 de agosto
de 2011 acontece o 29° Festival da Cachaça, Cultura e Sabores de Paraty, um dos maiores e mais tradicionais eventos do calendário cultural da cidade. O festival deste ano promete ser uma grande celebração da cultura paratiense. Além da cachaça, carro chefe do evento, a gastronomia, as danças, as artes e a música regional estarão presentes para receber os visitantes. O festival contará com a participação dos sete engenhos em atividade hoje no município. São eles: Coqueiro, Corisco, Engenho D`Ouro, Maré Cheia, Maria Isabel, Paratiana e Pedra Branca. Nos stands dos alambiques o visitante poderá adquirir a tradicional canequinha do festival e apreciar as cachaças artesanais de Paraty, as mais tradicionais do Brasil. Na praça de alimentação do evento estarão os restaurantes da gastronomia sustentável de Paraty; neles os visitantes poderão apreciar os sabores da culinária local, incluindo pratos flambados e marinados com a nossa cachaça. Os doces típicos e os pratos com palmito e camarão também estarão presentes.
The 29th Cachaça*, Culture and Flavors Festival of Paraty, one of the largest and most traditional events of the city’s cultural calendar, will run from August 18 to 21 of 2011. This year’s edition promises to be a great celebration of Paraty’s culture. In addition to cachaça, the central element of the event, culinary, dance, arts and regional music will also welcome visitors to the town. The festival will feature seven distilleries currently active in the municipality: Coqueiro, Corisco, Engenho D`Ouro, Maré Cheia, Maria Isabel, Paratiana and Pedra Branca. At each distilleries’ stand, visitors will be able to acquire the traditional festival cup and savor the artisan cachaças of Paraty, the most traditional of Brazil. Paraty restaurants that adhere to sustainable cuisine practices will cater the food court. There, visitors will be able to enjoy the flavors of the local cuisine, including dishes marinated and flambéed with local cachaça. Dishes based in palm hearts and shrimp as well as typical local desserts will also be featured. At the band stand located next to the stills, there will be performances by local musicians, including cirandeiro1 ensembles, the Santa Cecília band, as well as performances of traditional musical genres such as chorinho, samba de raiz, and forró, among others. In this same venue, Paraty’s dance companies will exhibit the beauty and art of local traditional dances such as the ribbon dance, the cateretê and more. For the most demanding conoisseurs of high-quality cachaça, we suggest a visit to the distilleries, which will remain open to the public during the festival, allowing visitors to learn about the manufacturing process of Paraty’s cachaça, the only one in Brazil to have a seal of Geographic Origin Indication.

The anthropologist Petit is known for her work on reading in crisis zones. The architect and journalist Gauzin-Müller will describe the importance of urban equipment planned according to social and environmental concerns.
12 PM Roundtable 1 - Critical lyricism An encounter of two great poets. Carol Ann Duffy, the first woman to be appointed as the poet laureate of the United Kingdom, approaches sexuality and violence with subjective intensity and formal rigor. Paulo Henriques Britto is a crafter of verses whose exercises in style engage in a dialogue with English poetry (of which he is an eminent translator), giving rise to a precise idiom and lyricism with a critical perspective.
3 PM Roundtable 2 - The modernist benchmark The most modern among the modernists of the Week of ’22 and a precursor of both concrete poetry and Tropicália, Oswald de Andrade brought the elites of the Brazilian Belle Époque into tune with the futurist spirit and the political-aesthetic contradictions that arose with the nation’s urbanization. Researchers of our historical and literary modernity show the multiple facets of the nativist poet who penned romanesque panoramas and cubist novels.
5:15 PM Roundtable 3 - Fictions of the diaspora Two non-English writers of the English language update the narrative based on the colonial diaspora and reaffirm a tradition that ranges beyond geographic borders, incorporating cultural shocks. With Pakistani author Kamila Shamsie, the traumas of the 20th century flow into the post-9/11 conflicts; and, with Caribbean writer Caryl Phillips, different generations are interlinked by racial identity.
7:30 PM Roundtable 4 - The human beyond the human The Enlightenment project for the manipulation of nature has reached its apex in the neural sciences, which very notably include the brilliant discoveries of top scientist Miguel Nicolelis. But the modern utopias that envisage the freeing of the subject do not dispel our anxieties, our essential precariousness, as philosopher Luiz Felipe Pondé is wont to remind us. A comparing and contrasting of these points of view reveals the ethical dilemmas onto which science and philosophy are converging.

Em literatura, o contemporâneo sempre dialoga com a tradição e o passado sempre reverbera no presente. Em O viajante do século, o argentino Neuman mergulha em tertúlias do século XIX para identificar tensões que se prolongam em nosso milênio. E em The more I owe you, o norte-americano Sledge refaz, com sensibilidade contemporânea, o amor entre a urbanista brasileira Lota de Macedo Soares e a poeta Elizabeth Bishop.
12h mesa 6 - Pontos de fuga Toda ficção elege um ponto de vista que se comunica de modo oblíquo com o mundo objetivo. A ficção moderna, porém, explicitou o caráter parcial desse olhar, “desrealizando” o próprio real pela paródia e pela alegoria. Irônica é a maneira como Oloixarac relê o cerebralismo da literatura argentina; e alegórico é o modo como valter hugo mãe recria universos arcaicos que sobrevivem à exaustão da realidade.

And in The more I owe you, North American writer Michael Sledge reconstructs, with contemporary sensibility, the love between the Brazilian urbanist Lota de Macedo Soares and poet Elizabeth Bishop.

Modern fiction, however, made the partial character of this perspective explicit, using parody and allegory to “derealise” the real. Irony is Oloixarac’s tool of choice for carrying out a rereading of intellectualism in Argentine literature, while hugo mãe resorts to allegory to re-create archaic universes that survive the exhaustion of reality.
3 PM Roundtable 7 - Family ties With Hungarian Peter Esterházy and French Emmanuel Carrère, familial memories and personal experiences are set adrift in narratives that transcend the confessional register, blur the labels of “autobiographic prose” and “autofiction,” and rub shoulders with strictly fictional works, demonstrating the unending capacity for the renewal of the language of fiction writing.

Será excepcionalmente realizada na tenda do telão. Em um rito antropofágico, José Celso Martinez Corrêa e outros 22 atores interpretam o manifesto de Oswald de Andrade. 2:30 PM Roundtable 17 - In the name of the father One of the recurring themes in Latin American literature is the scars left by the dictatorial regimes. In the case of Colombia, the sore is reopened in the context of the current war against narcotraffic and the upsurge of the paramilitary forces. Two of Colombia’s greatest writers talk about their novels in which they describe their country’s permanent state of exception, with impacts on their personal lives and connections with other regions of the continent.
4:30 PM Event 18 - The play Macumba Antropófaga, with readings from “Inspirational Books” The last roundtable of Flip 2011, traditionally entitled Inspirational Books, will take place together with the staging of the play Macumba Antropófaga, by the Uzyna Uzona Theatre Workshop. It will be held, exceptionally, in the Giant Screen Tent. In an anthropophagical rite, José Celso Martinez Corrêa and another 22 actors present a stage version of Oswald de Andrade’s manifesto. In the second half of the show, some authors of Flip will be invited to read passages from their favourite books. A Flipinha , que desde 2003 acompanha a Festa Lite-
rária Internacional de Paraty, de diminutivo só tem o nome. O evento, que na verdade é o resultado de um programa educativo da Flip, é grande, e faz sucesso entre as crianças. E ainda, diverte, encanta e enriquece culturalmente todos que passam por lá. Mas a Flipinha não acontece só durante a Flip. Na verdade, é um programa que inclui ações de alunos e professores da rede escolar pública e privada de Paraty em inúmeras atividades de incentivo à leitura e de valorização do patrimônio cultural local. E durante a Flip, a Tenda da Flipinha é o ponto de encontro das atividades realizadas ao longo de todo o período. Nesta parte da Flip, a literatura de fato encanta. Um palco em frente à Praça da Matriz, todo enfeitado, é o ponto principal da Flipinha. Ali há sempre alguma atração interessante acontecendo, como teatro e musicais. Grandes bonecos de papel maché, representando personagens da literatura, produzidos nas oficinas, enfeitam e dão graça à Praça da Matriz. Nas árvores, livros pendurados e ao redor, cerca de 70 mediadores de leitura convidam o público a aconchegar-se para ouvir uma boa história. O diretor geral da Festa Literária, Mauro Munhoz, costuma brincar que, em pouco tempo, a Flip será apenas uma programação paralela, criada para entreter adultos, enquanto a Flipinha acontece. Mas o fato é que não são apenas as crianças que a Flipinha cativa. Vale a pena conferir. Leve as crianças, mas prepare-se, você também vai se encantar. P
The Flipinha (Little Flip), which has been happening since 2003, along with the Paraty International Literary Festival (Flip), is small only in name. The event, an offshoot of an educational program of Flip, is quite large and a hit among children. It’s entertaining, charming and culturally enriching for all who visit it. Flipinha doesn’t only happen during Flip. In fact, it is a program where students and teachers in the public and private schools of Paraty participate throughout the year in many activities promoting reading and the valorization of the local cultural heritage. During Flip, the Flipinha tent is the meeting point of the activities realized throughout the whole period of the program. In this portion of Flip, literature is in fact enchanting. A decorated stage set in front of Matriz Square is the focal point of Flipinha. There are always some interesting attractions there, such as theater plays, musicals and musical performances. Large dolls made of papier-mâché representing literary characters are constructed by different workshops and decorate Matriz Square, giving it grace. Books hang from the trees, and all around the square 70 reading facilitators invite the public to get comfortable and listen to a good story. Even the executive director of the Flip, Mauro Munhoz, often jokes that soon the Flip will be just a parallel event created to entertain the adults while Flipinha is happening. However, children aren’t the only ones captivated by Flipinha. It’s worth checking out. Take the children, but be ready to be enchanted. Nos últimos anos
, a OFF FLIP tem se destacado na vida cultural de Paraty, tornando-se importante espaço de visibilidade e referência para a produção cultural local e nacional. Por meio dos Encontros Literários paralelos ao grande evento Flip, e do Prêmio OFF FLIP de Literatura, a OFF FLIP busca agregar manifestações culturais variadas, criando e difundindo cada vez mais um circuito de produção alternativa de cultura do Brasil. A OFF FLIP tem o mérito de ter instituído o primeiro prêmio literário da cidade de Paraty e sua programação complementa em muitos aspectos a programação do evento oficial. Cultiva, sobretudo, a ideia de preservar e valorizar a cultura, as artes e a literatura de Paraty e de simultaneamente abrir um caminho de encontro e interação com culturas de outros lugares. Nas edições anteriores, reuniu participantes do importante movimento da Rede Caiçara de Cultura, promovendo o resgate das tradições culturais do litoral sudeste do Brasil, e ainda, homenageou escritores locais, como Zezito Freire, Irma Zambrotti, Luis Perequê, Diuner Mello, Themilton Tavares, Jorge Miguel e Marina de Mello e Souza, em saraus onde foram lidos textos e realizadas apresentações, tendo por base a produção artística e a contribuição destas personalidades à vida cultural da cidade. Na programação deste ano, escritores e público participam de encontros de leitura, debates, lançamentos e sessões de autógrafos. O Café Literário e a Conversa de Botequim reunirão cerca de 50 autores em duas edições de debates. Na sexta-feira, haverá um debate com os vencedores do Prêmio SESC de Literatura e um sarau com os vencedores do Prêmio OFF FLIP 2011. Logo em seguida haverá o lançamento da coletânea com os textos vencedores do Prêmio OFF FLIP 2010. A programação cultural conta com a Picareta Cultural, exposições de Margareth Mee e Lucio Cruzz, sessão de cinema - 60 anos de Cidadão Kane, o filme de Orson Welles - cantoria com Luis Perequê e convidados, noite performática dirigida pela bailarina Vanda Mota, gastronomia sustentável e muito mais. Over the last few years, the Off-Flip has stood out in the cultural life of Paraty, becoming an important space for exposure and a reference point for local and national cultural production. Through the Literary Meetings that run parallel to the main Flip event and the Off-Flip Literary Award, Off-Flip is focused on bringing together a variety of cultural manifestations, creating and promoting an ever growing circuit for the alternative cultural production of Brazil. Off-Flip has the distinction of establishing Paraty’s first literary award, and in many ways its program complements the official event’s program. Above all, it cultivates the idea of preserving and valuing the culture, arts and literature of Paraty, while opening a route for meeting and interacting with the cultures of other places. In past years, Off-Flip gathered participants of the important Caiçara Culture Network movement, rescuing the cultural traditions of the Southeastern coast of Brazil, and also honored local writers such as Zezito Freire, Irma Zambrotti, Luis Perequê, Diuner Mello, Themilton Tavares, Jorge Miguel and Marina de Mello e Souza in literary salons with readings and performances based on the artistic creations and contributions of these personalities to the cultural life of the city. In this year’s program, writers and the public will participate in reading encounters, discussions, releases and book-signing sessions. The Literary Café and Pub Talk will gather close to 50 authors in two panel discussion sessions. On Friday, there will be a round-table discussion with winners of the SESC Literary Award and a literary salon for the winners of the 2011 Off-Flip Award, followed by the release of the collection of winning texts from the 2010 Off-Flip Award. The cultural program also includes the Picareta Cultural; exhibits by Margareth Mee and Lucio Cruzz; the film session celebrating 60 years of Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane”; a singing performance by Luis Perequê and guests; performance art night directed by the dancer, Vanda Mota; Sustainable Cuisine and much more.
