SARACEN HORSE FEEDS
FEED THE DIFFERENCE
ABOUT SARACEN Welcome to Saracen Horse Feeds, originally the specialist horse feed division of the Lillico Group, which is an independent, family owned business with more than 150 years of experience in manufacturing animal feeds. Saracen became a limited company in its own right in 1989, but still takes pride in its traditional family heritage, and stays true to the founding values of trust, integrity, quality, and commitment to exceptional customer service. In challenging environments, Saracen continues to combine these values with modern manufacturing capabilities; innovative, research-led formulations keep us at the forefront of modern feed manufacture. We are dedicated to producing nutritionally sound, innovative rations and providing our customers with an accessible and personal service. We set ourselves the highest of standards in quality control, and annual quality audits determine our continued compliance to the UFAS (Universal Feed Assurance Scheme) BETA NOPS Code of Practice and FEMAS (Feed Materials Assurance Scheme). Saracen has an open declaration policy, which means that every ingredient that we use is declared on our feed labels, and we work to Fixed Formulations to protect the integrity and quality of our diets. Feeding a horse properly doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated as long as you keep your nutritional goals in mind. We are here to help you understand how to achieve those goals with the correct products and feeding strategies. We don’t want to baffle or confuse you, but we do want to offer simple, practical solutions that make sense. We have a professional, well-qualified and

understanding team of people on our staff who work hard to listen to your horse’s nutritional requirements, and to your ambitions. We are the exclusive Kentucky Equine Research (KER) Team Member in the UK. KER is the most prolific independent equine research centre in the world, entirely committed to the advancement of breeding and athletic performance through nutrition. From its headquarters in Central Kentucky, KER conducts extensive research, and each research trial is designed to improve the health and wellbeing of horses by targeting specific problems, and finding nutritional solutions. By working so closely with KER in this way, we share those aims and objectives, and because of our close links we can make these resources available in the UK in both the recommendations we make, and in the way our feed is formulated. Our collaboration has given us the chance to consistently provide nutritional solutions with unique, progressive feeds that can make a real difference, along with the science to support them. RE-LEVE®, LevelGrow™ and Super Fibre Pencils are good examples of concept feeds that have been produced as joint projects. With our range of feeds, we have brought together the everyday items needed for feeding different types of horses in varying stages of life and activity levels, or during growth and development. These feeds continue to provide the top quality nutrition you expect from us with the guesswork taken out. And it doesn’t have to be expensive. When fed correctly, Saracen products can be very cost effective due to their nutrient density.

WHY SARACEN CONSISTENCY
Saracen uses only the highest quality materials in their feeds, and every ingredient is carefully selected by following strict quality control procedures. Animal derivatives are not included in any Saracen feeds. The formulations for the rations are fixed, so that the quality and consistency are maintained throughout, and the company’s ‘Open Declaration’ policy means that every ingredient is listed on the bag label.
BALANCED DIETS
Saracen feeds are made entirely from individual feeding stuffs that the horse would eat if fed separately. These are then balanced with a high profile vitamin and mineral specification, such that the optimum levels of nutrients are achieved when the horse is fed the recommended amount of feed.
VALUE FOR MONEY
Each formulation of Saracen feed contains the appropriate level of protein, energy, fibre, vitamins and minerals for the type of horse that the feed is specifically designed for. The main base for the mixes is alfalfa, which provides a valuable source of highly digestible and nutritious fibre. This high digestibility makes Saracen diets both efficient and cost-effective.
BENEFITS OF ALFALFA
Alfalfa is used extensively throughout Saracen feeds. It contains numerous micronutrients that aid hoof growth, as well as being a rich source of bio-available calcium. More importantly, however, the addition of alfalfa in Saracen diets provides the horse with a rich source of highly digestible fibre. As their digestive tracts are designed for the continual consumption of forage, horses are very efficient at extracting energy and other nutrients from fibre sources. Digestible fibre is also essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system as a lack of fibre in the horse’s diet will increase the risk of psychological problems (crib biting) and physiological problems (gastric ulcers). Recent research shows that horses offered multiple forage sources were less likely to exhibit abnormal behaviours.
ENERGY
Energy is the nutritional factor most influenced by exercise. Performance is affected by the amount of energy fed, the source and the timing of feeding. There are various types of energy sources, such as oils, fibres and carbohydrates:
4
OILS
Horses can readily digest and utilise fat in their diet. Adding oil increases the energy density of the ration, which can improve stamina and endurance, reduce fatigue and reduce heat production during digestion. Replacing cereals in the diet with oil can help to reduce the fluctuations in blood glucose and insulin levels, helping to make excitable horses manageable, as well as reducing the risk of colic, laminitis and tying up. Soya oil is included in all Saracen diets and high fat stabilised rice bran is incorporated in selected conditioning diets.
FIBRES
Highly fermentable fibre sources, such as alfalfa, soya hulls and sugar beet, are included in the range of Saracen feeds. These ingredients provide slow-release energy, which complements the processed cereals and high oil levels to ensure sustained, controlled performance. The digestible fibre sources used in Saracen feeds enhance the energy density, enabling a further reduction of cereal levels in the diet. For example, sugar beet is about 80% digestible fibre compared to about 50% for average hay. For performance horses on reduced long forage rations, diets that are high in digestible fibre can help to maintain digestive health and reduce the risk of colic and gastric ulcers.
CARBOHYDRATES
Cereals containing starch are included in Saracen feeds as an additional source of energy. Saracen processes these cereals by micronising or extruding processes, which maximises the amount of starch that can be digested. This reduces the risk of undigested starch reaching the hindgut where it can predispose the horse to a variety of digestive disorders. As starch digestion is relatively quick, cereals provide the horse with an effective source of quick-release energy. Diets high in cereals may exaggerate an excitable temperament.
PROTEIN
Protein and amino acids are essential for cell and tissue renewal, muscle repair, growth and development, as well as for the synthesis of enzymes and hormones. Apart from growing horses, older horses, and lactating mares, protein is not needed in great amounts. However, it is important to have a variety of good quality, digestible vegetable protein. The main protein sources used in Saracen diets are soya, alfalfa and peas.
MICRONUTRIENTS
The vitamin and mineral supplementation in Saracen rations is extensive. All the diets are fortified with micronutrient packages that have been formulated in association with Kentucky Equine Research, following digestibility studies performed at their research farm. As a result, Saracen feeds provide your horse with an optimum, balanced micronutrient supply, which ensures the maintenance of his health and overall well-being. Herbs are also included in some of the rations, which provide a natural source of vitamins and minerals lacking from pasture, as well as aiding respiration, digestion and natural healing processes.
5
QUALITY CONTROL – UFAS & NOPS Every bag of Saracen feed is manufactured in a UFAS accredited mill, and undergoes strictly documented quality control procedures. A comprehensive system is in place to ensure the consistency and quality of all products manufactured by Saracen Horse Feeds for equine use. Saracen Horse Feeds joined the new code of practice for feed manufacturers that the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) put in place on 1st October 2009. The Universal Feed Assurance Scheme (UFAS), Naturally Occurring Prohibited Substances (NOPS) Code has been developed by BETA in response to the increased incidence of positive dope tests in racehorses. The NOPS scheme, whilst not a guarantee, is a risk-assessment based approach to reducing the chance of feed being contaminated with naturally occurring prohibited substances, such as morphine, for example. Both the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and the National Trainers Federation (NTF) have endorsed the BETA NOPS Code, which is now incorporated into our UFAS annual audit. As an approved member of the new code, we use the logo like a kite mark, a sign of reassurance to owners and trainers of the stringent quality management procedures that have been undertaken during every step of the sourcing, storage, transport and manufacturing processes for each product. Saracen operate a strict bonding policy as part of its manufacturing process for our racing range of products (clearly marked on our packaging with a “bonded” symbol). These products are bonded and kept in isolation in a designated quarantine area at our main site in Aylesford prior to release for sale. To clear our bonding process, aggregate samples from each batch are submitted to the Horse Racing Forensic Laboratory (HFL) in Newmarket. HFL Sports Science has been testing commercially prepared feed for the horseracing industry for over 20 years. They offer a screening service designed to assist feed manufacturers in their quality control process. Analysis is performed to high international standards (ISO 17025) using state of the art mass spectrometric detection systems, capable of detecting contaminants at very low levels (ng/g). The product is only released for sale on receipt of a certificate from the HFL stating that with regards to caffeine & theobromine “None were found”.

RITETRACTM
SUITABLE FOR

TOTAL DIGESTIVE TRACT HEALTH SUPPLEMENT
FEATURES & BENEFITS
> Contains EquiShure, a time-released buffer for the hindgut > Supports a healthy digestive environment for optimal nutrient absorption > Recommended for use during training, travelling, weaning, or other stressful events
DESCRIPTION
RiteTrac is a scientifically proven supplement for total digestive tract support. Targeted at both the foregut and the hindgut of the horse, RiteTrac works in two distinct ways. When fed in conjunction with correct management and forage regimes, RiteTrac helps to maintain an optimal gastric environment. RiteTrac also contains EquiShure to help maintain an optimum pH in the horse’s hindgut and ensure normal fermentation patterns. RiteTrac is proven to be effective at elevating gastric pH in horses, together with EquiShure, a time-released hindgut buffer that helps to maintain hindgut pH at optimal levels. RiteTrac is recommended for use during training and travelling, or at any time when feeding patterns have changed or have been compromised.

RESTORE SR
SLOW-RELEASE ELECTROLYTE
FEATURES & BENEFITS
> Slowly delivers sodium and other key electrolytes such as chloride, potassium, and magnesium to match and replace what was lost in sweat > Sugar-free formula
DESCRIPTION
Restore SR contains the latest technology in electrolyte research, including a proprietary slow-release mechanism that allows sodium to be released gradually into the gastrointestinal tract for sustained absorption. When sodium is delivered slowly over a period of time, it is fully absorbed and utilised by the body. This is not always the case with the normal method of feeding a concentrated electrolyte, which causes a surge in blood electrolyte levels, and stimulates increased excretion of electrolytes, flushing out the electrolytes that have just been fed. Restore SR helps horses to retain the electrolytes provided so they can replenish their reserves in the most optimal manner— slowly.

FEEDING RECOMMENDATIONS
Adjust feeding levels according to sweat loss and work intensity. Divide daily amount fed equally between meals and mix well. Feed Restore SR after competition, work, travelling or in any situation in which the horse has sweated. In addition to Restore SR, all horses should have free-choice access to a salt block and water. The following recommendations are for horses with a mature body weight of 500 kg and should be adjusted accordingly.

SUITABLE FOR
> Horses on high-cereal diets, or grazing lush pasture > Horses with a poor appetite, decreased feed intake or weight loss > Horses with loose droppings that may be strong smelling > Horses with unexplainable behavioural problems, such as wood chewing, weaving or box walking
FEATURES & BENEFITS
> Targeted delivery of sodium bicarbonate to the hindgut > Stabilises hindgut pH > May improve feed efficiency through effective hindgut function
DESCRIPTION
SERVINGS AND CONTAINER SIZES
Serving size: 60 g (30-g scoop included) Container sizes: 1.25 kg (20 servings), 3.6 kg (60 servings), 7.2 kg (120 servings), 18 kg (300 servings)
EquiShure is a unique supplement shown to help to maintain a normal pH in the horse’s hindgut, particularly in horses receiving diets with a high cereal inclusion. EquiShure acts as a timereleased hindgut buffer, by supplying an encapsulated source of sodium bicarbonate to the colon and caecum. EquiShure can be used to help maintain a normal pH during the intense periods of a stressful competitive season, or when travelling, or at any time when there is a greater reliance on high starch and cereal diets without adequate levels of forage. At-risk horses often express one or more signs that can reduce athletic performance, growth or reproductive potential, such as loss of appetite, digestive discomfort, wood chewing and other stereotypies, with concomitant loss of performance.
FEEDING RECOMMENDATIONS
Top-dress EquiShure on feed. Feed 30 to 180 g daily according to the horse’s size and risk levels. Use the table below to determine recommended daily amount based on the horse’s cereal intake, forage source, and weight. For best results, divide the amount equally among feeds.
