RESEARCH SEPARATES THE INNOVATOR FROM THE IMITATOR® Kentucky Equine Research (KER) was founded in 1988 when Joe Pagan, Ph.D., realised that information generated from research did not reach the individuals that needed it most: feed manufacturers and horse owners. Since then the primary focus of the company has been bridging the gap between the research community and horsemen. KER accomplishes this through research, nutritional solutions, and consultation. KER is one of the most prolific private equine nutrition and exercise physiology research companies in the world. The quantity of published research derived from studies conducted at KER rivals that of leading universities. In addition to its own research, KER collaborates with prominent research institutions to develop and patent products and diagnostic techniques that target specific problems in horses. Using KER studies as a foundation, KERx Special Needs Nutrition products were developed to support special dietary needs. Backed by science and preferred by veterinarians, KERx products are designed with one goal in mind: to optimise the health of your horse. KER performs routine in vivo quality control studies to ensure that all KER supplements are free from prohibited substances. Aside from its research efforts, KER serves as an industry-wide consultant, working with feed manufacturers worldwide to source novel ingredients and formulate high-quality feeds. Part of this effort involves the use of proprietary programs developed by KER, including MicroSteed™, nutrition management and ration evaluation software, and GroTrac™, growth-monitoring software that allows breeders to compare the growth rates of their foals, weanlings, and yearling with those of young horses of similar age, sex, and breed. Another aspect of KER’s consultation services involves its relationship with national governing bodies of equine sport. KER serves as the official equine nutritionist of the United States Equestrian Federation and the Australian Equestrian Team. For more information on Kentucky Equine Research, visit ker.com

DESCRIPTION

DuraPlex速 is proven to support optimal bone mineral density and bone area in both performance horses and growing horses. DuraPlex速 is a proprietary blend of specific proteins, minerals and vitamins scientifically demonstrated to attenuate bone demineralisation during periods of inactivity. Bone demineralisation occurs when access to free-choice exercise is restricted, such as when young horses are box-resting due to injury or surgery.

Bone mineral content is expressed as a radiographic bone aluminum equivalence (RBAE). Selected points on the cannon bone are scanned and lateral, medial and midpoint RBAE are generated to calculate actual bone mineral content.

Studies at Kentucky Equine Research showed that DuraPlex supplementation maintained bone health during box confinement, a situation in which demineralisation of bone would normally occur. Use of DuraPlex ensures that the skeletal system remains strong through confinement and is properly resilient for training when the time comes.

FEEDING RECOMMENDATIONS

Top-dress on feed. For the support of optimal bone health, feed 60 g per day. For horses in need of additional support, feed 120 g per day. For best results, divide evenly between feeds.

OMEGA-3 SUPPLEMENT SUITABLE FOR

> Pregnant mares, supplementation of the mare is passed directly to the foal with positive effects on foetal nervous system development > Stallions and their semen quality: sperm shape, viability and motility have all been improved with EPA and DHA supplementation > Working horses, from light to heavy work

FEATURES & BENEFITS

The benefits of the correct balance of omega-3: omega-6 on cell integrity is manifest in several ways: > Effective joint function: horses receiving high concentrate performance diets will have an inverse omega-3: omega-6 ratio, so affecting the natural functioning of the joint capsule. Correcting the ratio with EO•3 supports optimal joint function > Improved coat and hoof condition > In stabled horses and those in hard work, healthy membrane elasticity supports the delicate lung tissues especially during intense exercise > Suckling foals, mares receiving EPA and DHA have been shown to pass on the omega-3 fatty acids to their foals, facilitating improvements in the foal’s natural immunity > For optimal omega-3 supplementation, use a marine-derived source for supporting optimal cell function PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acid) Content of commonly Used Oils

DESCRIPTION

EO•3 is a unique source of omega-3 derived from marine sources that improves the critical omega-3: omega-6 fatty acid ratio in equine diets. These essential fatty acids cannot be made by the horse and have to be supplied by the diet. There are two main categories of essential fatty acids, also known as PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) - omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Grass-fed horses receive a large proportion of omega-3 essential fatty acids from their grazing. Hay and cereals contain significantly less omega-3s. The equine body is therefore hardwired to receive a greater proportion of omega-3 fatty acids in its diet than of omega-6, and the system is in healthy balance when this is so. However, the issue in modern feeding is that grains and traditional concentrate feed ingredients supply a greater proportion of omega-6 fats, as do commonly added oils such as soya, corn and ricebran oil. This means that modern feeding regimes can supply a ratio of these essential fatty acids that is inverse to that the equine system has evolved to utilise. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids operate in the cells of the body in complementary roles. The optimal ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids is thought to be in the region of 2-4:1.

Source of omega-3s is key Plant-derived omega-3s are converted in the body from their basic linoleic acid form to more complex and highly effective EPA and DHA fatty acids. Marine oils on the other hand supply the EPA and DHA directly into the body, and are therefore a more potent way of supplying omega-3s.

FEEDING RECOMMENDATIONS

Add 1-2 fluid oz (30 – 60 ml) to the feed of growing horses, broodmares and performance horse in light to moderate work daily. Horses in heavy work, breeding stallions and those recovering from an illness may be fed 2-4 fluid oz (60-120 ml) per day. For best results, introduce EO•3 to the ration gradually over a period of 5-10 days. Divide evenly between feeds.

> Targeted delivery of sodium bicarbonate to the hindgut > Stabilises hindgut pH > May improve feed efficiency through effective hindgut function

DESCRIPTION

EquiShure® is a unique supplement shown to help to maintain a normal pH in the horse’s hindgut, particularly in horses receiving diets with a high cereal inclusion. EquiShure® acts as a time-released hindgut buffer, by supplying an encapsulated source of sodium bicarbonate to the colon and caecum. EquiShure® can be used to help maintain a normal pH during the intense periods of a stressful competitive season, or when travelling, or at any time when there is a greater reliance on high starch and cereal diets without adequate levels of forage. At-risk horses often express one or more signs that can reduce athletic performance, growth or reproductive potential, such as loss of appetite, digestive discomfort, wood chewing and other stereotypies, with concomitant loss of performance.

FEEDING RECOMMENDATIONS

Top-dress EquiShure® on feed. Feed 30 to 180 g daily according to the horse’s size and risk levels. Use the table opposite to determine recommended daily amount based on the horse’s cereal intake, forage source, and weight. For best results, divide the amount equally among feeds.

DESCRIPTION

Supporting healthy articular cartilage in the joints is essential to performance in horses. The cartilage within the joint capsule effectively coats the end of the bones in a joint and protects them from the shearing actions and shock loading of everyday movement. Articular cartilage is not an inert substance but is made up of living cells, chondrocytes, which maintain its shock absorbing functions. With athletic effort increasing the forces joint cartilage is subjected to,

and with chondrocyte activity declining with age, it therefore makes sense to support healthy cartilage with specific nutritional support.

FEEDING RECOMMENDATIONS

For horses in light to moderate work, add 15 gm to the daily ration. Horses in heavy work, those in need of additional joint protection, and horses weighing over 550 kg should receive 30 gm daily. A loading level of 30 gm may be added to the daily grain ration for 14 days.

RESTORE PASTE BUFFERED ELECTROLYTE SUPPLEMENT SUITABLE FOR

> For routine or strategic electrolyte replacement for all horses that sweat > Horses in work, or travelling to compete

FEATURES & BENEFITS

> Easy-to-administer oral paste > For routine or strategic electrolyte replacement for all horses that sweat > Supplies sodium, chloride, potassium, and magnesium to hard-working horses > May stimulate a thirst response and encourage horses to drink > Non-irritating formula for oral and gastrointestinal comfort

DESCRIPTION

A carefully formulated paste electrolyte supplement designed to match the composition of sweat. Restore® Paste is an easy-to-administer product that includes a buffering agent (EquiShure®) designed to support gastrointestinal comfort in horses. When horses sweat they lose electrolytes, with the principal losses being chloride, sodium, potassium, and magnesium. The composition of Restore® Paste mimics that of horse sweat so it replaces what has been lost in sweat.

FEEDING RECOMMENDATIONS

Administer one tube (60 g) after strenuous activity when the horse has been sweating. For best results during endurance training and competitions, administer Restore® Paste during the ride at rest stops or at water stops, and after completion. An entire tube can be used with each administration during a competition.

DESCRIPTION

Restore® SR contains the latest technology in electrolyte research, including a proprietary slow-release mechanism that allows sodium to be released gradually into the gastrointestinal tract for sustained absorption. When sodium is delivered slowly over a period of time, it is fully absorbed and utilised by the body. This is not always the case with the normal method of feeding a concentrated electrolyte, which causes a surge in blood electrolyte levels, and stimulates increased excretion of electrolytes, flushing out the electrolytes that have just been fed. Restore® SR helps horses to retain the electrolytes provided so they can replenish their reserves in the most optimal manner—slowly.

FEEDING RECOMMENDATIONS

Adjust feeding levels according to sweat loss and work intensity. Divide daily amount fed equally between meals and mix well. Feed Restore® SR after competition, work, travelling or in any situation in which the horse has sweated. In addition to Restore® SR, all horses should have free-choice access to a salt block and water. The following recommendations are for horses with a mature body weight of 500 kg and should be adjusted accordingly.

DESCRIPTION

Maintaining proper joint health is an important factor in the longevity of a horse’s performance career. Synovial fluid is a clear, viscous fluid secreted by tissues and membranes in joint cavities. As a lubricant, synovial fluid reduces friction and allows joints to work optimally. The nutrient-rich synovial fluid is a vital component that fills the joint capsule to aid in smooth passage of one bone over another and to absorb shock from highimpact work. The demands of performance often leave joints without sufficient synovial fluid, sometimes as a result of cumulative wear and tear. Sodium hyaluronate is a glycosaminoglycan that is an important structural component of joint cartilage, and is responsible for the viscosity (thickness) of the synovial fluid. Supplementation with Synovate HAŽ helps to support joint health proactively. Researchers have identified differences in biological activities for HA of different molecular weights. HA with a high molecular weight (more than 500,000 daltons) has the greatest biological response.

FEEDING RECOMMENDATIONS

For maintenance, give 15 ml per 500-kg horse per day in feed or orally. For a loading or pre-competition level (optional), give 30 ml per 500-kg horse in feed or orally once a day for 7-10 days.
