Event organiser Eleena Markcrow with Major Sponsor Joseph Cunial from Thrive Advice are excited about the Trivia Night being held in October.

Trivia With A Twist

October is Mental Health Month. In support of this important issue, local resident Eleena Markcrow has teamed up with major sponsor Thrive Advice (previously CKC Accounting) and Joseph Cunial in Canowindra to create awareness of the mental health networks we have in Canowindra and the surrounding region. On Saturday 26th October 2019 a Trivia Night with a Twist will be held at Canowindra Services Club at 6pm. “It’s not just to raise awareness but to get the community together to raise some fun,” said Eleena Markcrow, Event Organiser. Eleena describes it as a trivia night with a bit of a twist. “We have a house band to add a bit of dimension and some activities to add a bit of luck in the equation. You don’t have to be an Einstein to get involved. There is something for everyone!" We have some great prizes up for grabs during the night including tickets to Paul

Kelly’s ‘Making Gravy’ Tour at the Sydney Domain thanks to Frontier Touring, plus other generous donations from local and regional businesses,” continued Eleena. “Being a community event we couldn’t go past including a few of the town’s local characters and personalities. We’re keeping that under wraps so we have a few surprises on the night! One personality we can let out of the bag is Di Gill. Di works endlessly for our community in her role as a Rural Adversity Mental Health Consultant and it wouldn’t be a mental health month event without some wise words from Di herself,” said Eleena. Tickets are $35 per person and include grazing table on arrival and food throughout the night. To book your table (8 people per team) visit Joseph at Thrive Advice, see the team at Canowindra Services Club, book online via Eventbrite through the Facebook Event page or email Eleena at triviacanowindra@gmail.com

Hello to all at Canowindra and district from Al and Deb Symons… Hoping all goes well and slowly warming up albeit very little rain. At Echuca we visited the old wharf area with many buildings retained and restored from 1800-1900 when the paddle steamers plied there trade loading and unloading many years ago with several paddle steamers still in use. One famous one named the Pervensy was used in the TV and Movie All The Rivers Run with Sigrid Thornton and John Waters. You can still take a trip on this steamer reliving the past on a slow trip along the Murray River. We next travelled on to the Lake Hume Dam caravan park near Albury for some wind down time. A bit of shopping and some fishing with no luck so far, still a bit too cold for them to come on the bite. Also a surreal view from our site of the snow-capped mountains over in Victoria towards Falls Creek. By the time this goes to print we will be back home and will catch up with all.

Next couple of weeks we will relate a bit of a travel summary with a rundown of things to prepare for and some of the overall costs on a trip of this length, always be prepared for the unexpected is a good motto. Until next time all the best from Al and Deb.

View at Lake Hume from the caravan looking towards the Victorian snowfields.

Grand Piano Moves To New Home Some would say “only in Canowindra” when you drive past a grand piano on the front of a telehandler in Gaskill St! The celebrated old concert grand piano from All Saints Anglican Church has been replaced with a much younger model. The old Collard & Collard, built for Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 1955 has found a new home at Charlie McCarron's old garage, now owned and being progressively restored by Christian, Jody and Sicily Thun from Canberra. The Collard & Collard, during its decade at All Saints has been played by top musicians including Simon Tedeschi, Danial DeBora, Maria Raspopova, David Miller and of course our own local pianists, Marion Wilson, Bill Bussman and Ros Bullock. It may well have a new lease of life once the Thun family has completed converting the huge space at McCarron's garage into a "multi-function polis" for weddings, concerts and other functions. The old piano weighs close to a tonne, so Michael Payten kindly used his large telehandler to do the move with help from the team at the Canowindra Men's Shed, and fortunately with the approval of a motor cycle mounted traffic policeman who was busy in Canowindra on the day!

The newer Kawai piano which was Bill Bussman's personal instrument for many years will likely be played during Baroquefest this year which will run from 18th – 20th October, with two of the six concerts to be played at All Saints Anglican Church. Other Baroquefest concerts will be at Wallington Winery, Rosnay Organic Winery and the fabulous setting of the Noojee Lea Homestead on Fish Fossil Drive, just outside Canowindra. Tickets to some concerts and program details are still available online at www.baroquefest.org.au.

Peace Memorial Uniting Church.

50th Anniversary For Peace Memorial Uniting Church Building

The Canowindra Uniting Church invite the Canowindra community to the 50th Anniversary of the opening of Peace Memorial Methodist Church on Sunday 13th October 2019. In 1968 the Canowindra Methodist Trust supported by the congregation decided it was time to replace the existing building which had served them well since 1911. With the vision, support and leadership of Mr Athol Brown, the decision to rebuild was agreed to by members who pledged very nearly the total cost of $31,000 which was paid off over a few short years after its completion in 1969. Under the guidance of Architect Mr Phillip Nolan (Bathurst) an environmentally sensitive building was designed with under floor heating for the cold winters and high and low windows for cross ventilation for the hot summers. Mr Reg Sawyer (Canowindra) was contracted as the builder. In 1970 the Canowindra congregation entered an agreement with the local Pres-

byterian Church to form a Joint Parish. This was unique in NSW and was a precursor to the formation of the Uniting Church of Australia, which was inaugurated in 1977. In 2004, the Uniting Church Congregations of Canowindra, Cranbury and Cudal and Anglican Churches of Woodstock and Canowindra formed a Cooperating Parish in Canowindra and district, again unique in NSW. For the past 15 years the joint congregations have held services at Peace Memorial Church during the winter months, taking advantage of the forward thinking of the underfloor heating. The next step in the life of Peace Memorial Church is a planned redevelopment into a Community Life Centre. A special service will be held at Peace Memorial Church at 11am on Sunday 13th October followed by a luncheon at the Canowindra Bowling Club at 1pm for $25 pp. RSVP by 8th October to Christine Sampson on 0405 441 045.

How long have you lived in or around Canowindra and what do you like about living here? We made a tree change from Newcastle around 7 ½ years ago. Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I work for Forefront Services based out of Orange. We are one of the largest mining and construction contractors in the region. I enjoy the teamwork and comradery that we have at Forefront, all-round good people. What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I’m usually pretty busy during the week, so I use the weekends as a chance to try and spend some quality time with Mel and the kids. Maybe try and sneak in some footy! What are you really good at? Singing along to songs and getting the words completely wrong. I cop it at home and at work. What is your pet hate? Rude and ignorant people. Manners are free, no matter who you are! If you could have a super power what would it be and why? The power to heal. When I was in the cops, we used to go to the Sydney Children’s Hospital to visit the kids, it would dead-set break your heart to see what some of these kids would have to go through at such a young age. Tell us about your best holiday ever? Hands down our 6-month caravanning holiday last year – 13 weeks in the Northern Territory and 12 weeks in Western Australia - we have such a great country! We made so many memories together, although it feels like an eternity ago now though! What makes your day? When I walk through the door and Scarlet, my nearly 2.5-year-old daughter runs up, snuggles into me and says, “My wuv you daddy.” All of the day’s stresses no longer seem so important after that. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself? Haha, I was once given a proper mouthful of abuse from a former Prime Minister of Australia!

MONTROSE House Hello readers and welcome to this month’s column! Quite a few busy weeks lately, have been flat out. Flew to Port Macquarie at the end of August and did a couple of big fundraisers up there for Camp Quality which was great, caught up with lots of friends from Rotary too. Have worked with Tom Cunane for 25 years, we raise funds so the sick kids can come for a weeks break at Bonny Hills each year. September has been steady with a few quiet dinner parties. Big elegant dinner for Richard and Leonie Oliver from Cowra to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary with a teal/white/silver theme with beautiful white roses. It all looked really beautiful and with lots of candles the room looked wonderful. Group from Orange came over on Friday 13th September, a lovely bunch of ladies who lunched then had a shop around our beautiful town. There are quite a few lunches and dinners coming up, Hiawatha Luncheon this Saturday to plan Richard Glasson’s 80th Birthday in November at Montrose. We also have 60 people coming in Black Tie for good mate Wayne Beechers 60th at Montrose, should be wonderful with cocktails and grazing plates followed by a sumptuous buffet. I have started the wine barrels in the main street with some colour and will finish them off this week with more potted colour going into the barrels same as out the front of Montrose House. I have also decorated Synergy and Foodworks windows for Spring. Dottie from Rockstar’s window looks fabulous.
