FIGHT FOR THE POOR… The last battle - a powerful image from the barricade scene.

Les Misérables A Triumph For Parkes M & D

‘Powerful’ is one word that comes to mind when reflecting on the stellar performance of the Les Misérables cast at Parkes Little Theatre. Directors Lyn Townsend and Neil Westcott outdid themselves in producing this epic Boublil & Schönberg’s musical based on the work of Victor Hugo. The challenge, which in 2014 was seemingly impossible, of presenting this massive musical on the small stage of the Little Theatre only met with the already-proven determination of the two directors who, in their own words, ‘don’t do ordinary.’

Monday to Friday 7am-7.30pm Saturday to Sunday 7am-7pm

“Technically, Les Mis has been a massive challenge and caused a few sleepless nights,” said stage director Lyn. “However, we recognise our responsibility to keep on raising the bar.” Musical director Neil Westcott agreed that this challenge could not be understated, adding “but neither could the absolute commitment of our cast, band and crew. This has been a journey of joy and discovery, of seeking a new level of musical and technical excellence, way above anything we have attempted before.” Continued on page 2

Director Lyn Townsend.

Continued from page 1 Every actor played an incredible and convincing role filled with raw emotion. Aaron Kingham’s intense performance as Jean Valjean shone throughout the entire show. Shevaun Brown brought passion and real tears in her courageous performance of Fantine. Andrew Francis was a very convincing Javert, his spectacular front-on fall from the bridge was perfect. Kimberley Ryan was an outstanding Eponine, commanding the stage in every appearance. Rachael Westcott was a beautiful Cosette, Keola Aho met the challenge of playing Enjolras and James Whalan gave an impressive and genuine performance as Marius. Greg Ballantyne and Christa Radley added the comical relief of the Thenardiers absolutely brilliantly. They were a joy to watch. This was a stage loaded with mind-blowing acting and musical talent including 17 members who had never been on stage before. But Aaron was the rock of the entire production performing in almost every scene from start to finish, sweeping up the audience and taking them to another place and time. Aaron said it was a challenge, a pleasure and a lot of hard work. “A real rollercoaster of emotions.” “Pure joy,” said Shevaun of her role as Fantine. Other great achievements of this production include a praiseworthy green tick with 80% of the costumes made out of recycled doona and quilt covers, bed sheets and curtains. It is also the first time in decades that men outnumber the women in the cast with 22 men and 21 women. Les Misérables is still showing at the Little Theatre until Sunday, 6th October. Members of the Parkes Camera Club celebrated the club’s 60th anniversary when it hosted the Western Districts Associations of Camera Clubs (WDACC) Photographic Competition recently.

Parkes Camera Club In Focus At Regional Comp

The Parkes Camera Club had a lot to celebrate when it hosted the Western Districts Associations of Camera Clubs (WDACC) Photographic Competition at the Parkes Services Club recently. Six clubs took part in the interclub competition with the Parkes Camera Club taking equal second place. The six categories in the individual competition had a great display of entries, and Cathy McPherson from the Parkes club won first place in the digital open category. Five more members got second and third places in various categories. They are Julie Brown, Frances Thornton, Maree Tanswell, Steve Ostini and Matt Barber. The judge was Linda Fury from Wollon-

gong, who also gave a talk on her street photography when travelling overseas. Guest speaker, Helen Whittle from Molong, talked on taking portraits and editing them. The other big celebration for the Parkes Camera Club was its 60th anniversary and they shared a special cake with the other WDACC clubs present. Local Elvis tribute artist Barry Green, who is also a club member, entertained the group with some Elvis songs. A group of club members and visiting clubs went to the Aviation Museum at the Parkes Airport on Sunday where everyone enjoyed photographing the great display. “From all reports everyone enjoyed the weekend,” said one of the club members.

Parkes Has Secure Water Supply

2019 Red Bull Air Race World Champion Matt Hall (middle) with the BushCat building team last Friday. Matt signed the aircraft and students’ shirts.

Air Show Brings World Champion To Parkes

The high energy air show at the three-day AirVenture Australia event at the Parkes Regional Airport last weekend was a thrilling day for hundreds of visitors. The show was closed by the 2019 Red Bull Air Race World Champion, Matt Hall for his first public appearance since becoming world champion. Matt flew his unique race plane at 450km/h down the runway, did 12-G turns, hovered the plane, made tumbles and made it go backwards. On Friday Matt took time out to meet fans and also the 25 high school students who set a new world record building a BushCat aircraft in less than a week. “You’ve done something I’ve never done - build a plane!” he told them.

Answering questions from the group that included many trainee pilots, he told them about his exciting life because of aviation, and how hard work has brought him to the top of his game. Matt said winning the world champion title was more of a relief than elation as he had been so close to getting it for 11 years. He did his first solo flight 33 years ago, and was first an air force pilot for 18 years before turning to air racing. “I don’t do air racing because I’m an adrenaline junkie. I never get an adrenaline rush, if I do it means I’m beyond my capability. I remain dead calm and could be whistling while doing it.” By Maggi Barnard

Media reports that Parkes is forecast to run out of water in March next year has been disputed by Mayor Ken Keith. “Parkes is not at immediate risk of running dry contrary to recent media reports,” the Mayor said. “It is deeply disappointing that these figures have been quoted.” He said while there was no doubt that the current drought situation was dire, our community could rest assured that Parkes would have water through 2020 and beyond. “We are very much able to service our residents, businesses, and visitors to the region. “On the back of the misleading reports we have had some visitors questioning their travel plans as they do not want to be further a drain on our water supply. I would like to reassure everyone that Parkes is not at imminent risk of running dry. We encourage visitors to come and support our local businesses and enjoy everything Parkes has to offer, including the 2020 Parkes Elvis Festival,” Ken said. Parkes Shire Council’s General Manager Kent Boyd said Council upgraded the raw water infrastructure in 2016-18 as part of Council’s $100m multi award-winning Integrated Water Infrastructure Program. Council constructed new, more efficient water and wastewater treatment plants, upgraded the raw water supply infrastructure, constructed a new river pump station and refurbished Council’s bores. “There are now eight bores that collectively allow an increasing extraction capacity while spreading the drawdown of water over a larger area to minimise impact on the aquifer,” Kent said.

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I have lived in the Parkes area 40 years, I was born here. My family are very much local and I enjoy the rural setting. Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I currently find myself between jobs, but I have had my hands full with Les Misérables! At the moment I’m enjoying playing a larger role being a dad and being available for people in need. What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? As a tabletop war games fan, I enjoy gaming, painting and building miniatures whenever I can. I also build, configure and use desktop computers. What makes you proud? To see a job completed and done well. Also the accomplishments of my family and friends. If you could be an animal which one would you choose, and why? Probably a jaguar. I have always liked the big cats, there’s just something about the grace and strength of them. What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? The Lord of the Rings trilogy and books. My brother read The Hobbit to me when I was four, it started a life-long fascination with high fantasy. Tell us about your best holiday? When I was 17, I went on a youth exchange to Tahiti for five weeks. It was truly magical and I loved it. The culture, food and people were lovely and I would love to go back there someday with my family. What is on your bucket list? I would love to tour from Syria, through Egypt, Rome and into Europe someday.

Landscape gardener Elizabeth Briton and Parkes Shire Council’s Sustainability Officer Michael Chambers in the new Town Entry Garden.

How ‘Green’ Can One Garden Be? Parkes’ newest public garden is truly a ‘green’ space. The Town Entry Garden on the corner of Henry Parkes Way and Eugowra Road was landscaped with repurposed soil, features water-wise natives, and will be irrigated with recycled water. It was created as a value-adding project from the Recycled Water Rising Main (RWRM) construction. The land was disturbed during the recycled water pipeline construction, and Council took the opportunity to create a space that would benefit the community. “Many people are aware of the relationship between sustainability and the environment, but for a project to be truly sustainable it must address social and economic considerations as well, and the Town Entry Garden certainly ticks all the boxes,” said Parkes Shire Council’s Technical Infrastructure Manager, Julian Fyfe. The scope and nature of the garden was informed by a community workshop in May with a community consensus for a low-impact native garden. The hardy native species will need minimal maintenance, while 100% repurposed soil from the RWRM construction were used eliminating the costs of stockpiling or disposal. “The topography was created with waterflow in mind. Trees were planted along swails, or ridges, that were constructed to take advantage of natural runoff and direct water to plants,” Julian explained. “During rain events stone-lined creek beds will flow into an ephemeral pond, so the garden will change with the seasons.” Another project to come out of the RWRM Urban Design Workshop is a new bush tucker garden to be established at Bushman’s Hill to enhance the Wiradjuri Cultural Precinct. Council is inviting Wiradjuri elders and educators for input into the garden design. For more information contact Raen Fraser on 68612333 or Raen.Fraser@parkes.nsw. gov.au

PARKES SPORT

Every Dog Has Its Day

NEW AMENITIES… At the opening of the Harrison Park amenities were at the back (L-R) Cr Bill Jayet, Vice-President Stewart Lamond, Parkes Shire Mayor Ken Keith, Parkes & District Amateur Soccer Association’s President, Wayne Osborne and Cr Neil Westcott. In front are some young members Meg Skinner, Marcus Skinner, Charlie Skinner and Hayden Lamond.

New Amenties A Game Changer

The future of soccer in Parkes promises to be exciting with the completion of the refurbishment of the 41-year-old amenities block at Harrison Park Parkes Shire Mayor Ken Keith, Councillors and representative from the Parkes & District Amateur Soccer Association attended the opening of the new $378,000 project last Thursday. Harrison Park, home of the Parkes & District Amateur Soccer Association, is considered one of the premier soccer fields in the Central West, but the amenities were in desperate need of refurbishment. The new facility features two spacious change rooms, eight additional toilets, and additional facilities for disabled/ambulant access. The change rooms provide direct access to shower facilities, which can be closed to the public when required. The new amenities block has been designed for maximum ventilation while still being sheltered from the weather, and also features a new referee room, and accessible parent change room. Energy and water

efficiencies include timed taps and bubbler, LED lighting on timed sensors, and drinking bottle refill stations. “These upgrades will certainly be a game changer for local soccer. There are more than 500 registered players, as well as spectators and family members who regularly use these facilities, while the Parkes and District Cricket Association also utilise the field,” the Mayor said. Parkes & District Amateur Soccer Association’s President, Wayne Osborne said the new facilities would give Parkes a competitive edge when bidding to host future sporting events. “We are looking to apply for some rounds of the Western Youth League, and following that State titles. Councils are really investing in the playing surfaces and sealing work on the car parks, so we will end up with a premier product.” The works were managed by Parkes Shire Council’s Building and Projects Officer Bart Ingram and delivered by local building contractor Rodney Barnes.

Grand Final Winners

The Parkes & District Amateur Soccer Association held its Grand Finals at Pioneer Oval last Saturday. It was a great day of soccer, despite the dust storm turning the sky brown! The winners were U12- Glory; U17- Rangers; B GradePeak Hill All Stars and A Grade- PLC Raptors. Pictured are the Peak Hill All Stars.

Shire dogs now have something to wag about: there’s a new off-leash park at Kelly Reserve. After three months of construction the new dog park opened to the public today. The park is fully fenced, meaning playful pooches can run with the pack without risk of running into trouble such as traffic or playgrounds. The dog park includes a general exercise area, as well as a separate agility yard with permanent fixtures, which will encourage canines to exercise both body and mind. The entry is double gated to prevent accidental escapes. There is new turf, plenty of shade, and even bench seating for owners who might not have as much energy to burn. A pooch drinking bowl post was installed so dogs can keep hydrated. The park is also fitted with bag dispensers, so owners can easily clean up after their dogs. Parkes Shire Council’s Presentation Technical Officer, Tim Gillogly said the park was established as part of Council’s commitment to urban animal management. “Off-leash parks have a range of benefits, and provide social opportunities for both dogs and owners,” said Tim. Councillor Bill Jayet brought his companions Poppy and Banjo to test out the new facility and said: “This really is a fabulous project. There has been strong community demand for a fully fenced dog park, and this is better than anyone could have imagined.” Dog owners using the new facilities are expected to take the lead with responsible ownership. Dogs must be vaccinated, wormed, desexed and registered before being taken to the park. Always bring a leash, monitor your dog’s behaviour, and never leave dogs unattended.

Bill Jayet and Mick Bond encourage their canines to attempt some agility obstacles at the new off-leash dog park at Kelly Reserve.
