It is only one more sleep until the 118th annual Canowindra Show which will be held this weekend (27th-28th September), with the Major Sponsor this year Daly Flooring and Carpet. New Show President for 2019, Stuart Gavin said “The show committee has worked hard this year to encourage the younger generation to become involved in the Canowindra Show by adding events such as the Beaut Ute Competition and the Dog High Jump”. The very popular Cobley Pavillion entries for Dairy, Fruit and Vegetables, Garden Produce, Homemade Baking, Preserves, Needlework, Quilting, Cut Flowers, Fine Arts, Craft and Photography will need to be at the Cobley Pavillion by 9am on Friday
morning for judging. Friday night is always a treat at the show and this year will be no different. The Beaut Ute Competition will kick off at 6.30pm, followed by a spectacular fireworks display at 8pm. There will also be a bucking bull at the bar which is sure to entertain the crowds! This year there will be a Canowindra Celebrity Charity Esky Derby held on Saturday at 12.30pm in front of the Grandstand. Locals taking part include Nick Daly, Anna McNamara and Charlotte Groves (Senior Showgirl entrants), Phil Donato MP, Ken McNamara, Stuart Gavin and Greg Hamilton along with a favourite Canowindra celebrity. As part of their final week celebrations, Canowindra High School Year 12 students went to school on Monday dressed as historical figures and followed up with some fiercely contested games of dodge ball against the staff at lunchtime.
Orange Rodeo: The East to West Coast Rodeo Championships is set to hit Orange Showground again on Saturday October 12th, gate opens at 4pm with the main action at 5pm. The evening promises bone crunching family entertainment with Australia's rodeo stars being cowboys and cowgirls who will be competing for the prestigous gold buckle award of being crowned Australian East Coast Champion in their chosen event. Bulls, Broncs, Bikes and Barrel Racing horses are just some of the entertainment you will see, also at the Orange Rodeo is Newcastle artist Holly Wilson who will be singing live throughout the night. There will be food stalls, bar and jumping castles and other amusements for the children. HEADING FIGHTING FOR CENTRAL WEST WATER SECURITY I was very disappointed the NSW Government decided not to go ahead with the CRanky Rock Dam. I thought it was a solid proposal that would have been great for Canowindra. Despite my disappointment, we can’t stand still on water security, which is why I recently met with key stakeholders from Central Tablelands Water (CTW) to discuss water security priorities for the Central West Region, including Canowindra.
LOCAL ARTIST SUPPORTS ART PRIZE I recently attended the launch of the Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize at the Cabonne Council Chambers in Molong. While there, I caught up with portrait artist, Melissa Barber from Melissa Barber Galleries in Canowindra, and Tracey Callinan from Arts OutWest. The annual prize will distribute $6,000 to the winning artists, and will foster arts in the Shire and enable Council to acquire a collection of exceptional artworks. The winner of the major award, the Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize, will receive $4,250, while a People’s Choice award will be worth $1,000. There will also be $500 for the winning high school entry and $250 for a primary school prize.
IT’S SHOWTIME IN CANOWINDRA Country shows are the lifeblood of our communities, which is why I encourge the community to head down the Canowindra Showgrounds this Friday and Saturday, September 27 and 28, for the annual Canowindra Show. The two-day event starts at 9am on Friday morning, with the official opening taking place on Friday evening at 6pm. There is a jam-packed list of events including the popular charity esking racing, fireworks, sports shearing, an animal nursery for the kids and the sashing of this year’s Showgirl at 2pm on Saturday. Get along and support our local show!
The meeting was attended Chair of CTW - Cr David Somervaille, General Manager – Gavin Rhodes, Director Operational and Technical Services - Noel Wellham, and Mayor of Blayney Council - Cr Scott Ferguson. Various options discussed during the meeting included raising the Lake Rowlands Dam wall to increase the capacity by four gigalitres, construction of a pipeline between Carcoar Dam and Lake Rowlands and also a new dam wall at Lake Rowlands approximately 2.5 kilometres downstream. In the short term, I think there are tremendous potential benefits of a pipeline connecting Lake Rowlands Dam to Carcoar Dam, along with the ability to capture the additional stored water and move it within the network as a result of a raised dam wall. Noel Wellham said the raising of the wall is a six-month project at an estimated cost of $10 million. It would give short term relief to current water shortages through the next two droughts, capturing three to four times the volume of water which goes over the spillway during the typical droughtbreaking rain events. Construction of a new dam wall is a longer term project at an estimated cost of $70 million. These projects had been well-researched and with the launch of the new National Water Grid - the Australian Government’s new $100 million agency which was tasked with prioritising water projects around the country - meant the time was right for all levels of government to be identifying who could build what and how they would be paid for.
NDIS WORKSHOP COMES TO ORANGE People with disability in Calare are invited to share their experiences with the National Disability Insurance Scheme. An accessible community workshop will be held in Orange on 22 October to discuss ways to improve participants’ experiences with the NDIS. The workshop is just one of seven to be conducted in regional Australia. Baroquefest Is Back For 2019
While the six Baroquefest concerts on 18 - 20 October 2019 are booking out fast, seats and or ticket packages remain for the two larger concerts at All Saints Anglican Church. On Friday 18th October at 8.00pm "Ad Hoc Baroque" will perform. Following its acclaimed program of cantatas at the 2018 festival, Canberra's Ad Hoc Baroque returns to Canowindra with eleven musicians and singers. They will celebrate springtime with a superb cantata by Alessandro Scarlatti, "Il Giardino d'Amore" ("The Garden of Love"), which tells the story of the goddess Venus and the love-stricken shepherd boy Adonis. Written for recorder, trumpet and strings, its duets and arias are full of musical variety, evocative descriptions of nature, and emotional feeling. They will also play a delightful recorder concerto by Scarlatti as part of a program that captures the entertainment of the princes and cardinals of Rome around 1700. On Saturday 19th October at 8.00 pm "Baroque Plus!" will perform. Baroquefest
will celebrate modern interpretations of Baroque, as an electric viola da gamba meets Jazz in the ensemble "Elysian Fields". Australia’s only electric viola da gamba ensemble, was formed by Jenny Eriksson, Matt Keegan and Matt McMahon in 2015, Keegan and McMahon being two of Australia’s most outstanding jazz musicians and composers. Jenny’s aim was to move beyond just playing baroque music and to explore jazz and improvisation allowing each musician to express the full range of their interests and talents. The “Baroque Plus!” concert will include baroque music in charts such as Elysian Fields and The Garden Party and folk music with a focus on Scandinavia (Frid På Jord, Vi Ska Ställa and Southern Cross). Pianist Matt McMahon has even set Renaissance poetry to music in the song cycle “What should I say”. This is an eclectic program to savour and enjoy! Have you noticed a new green water filling station near the netball courts on Rodd St in Canowindra? This water filling station was installed by Central Tablelands Water, in conjunction with Cabonne Council. It is one of a number of projects undertaken throughout the Shire by Cabonne Council as part of the $1 million in Drought Communities Funding Council received from the Federal Government. Eugowra and Manildra were other sites for the installation of water filling stations. Other Drought Communities Funding projects include: • Upgrades across recreational facilities including parks, sporting grounds and reserves; • Upgrades to the watering system and perimeter fence of Dean Park Recreation Ground in Cudal; • Upgrade and installation of rabbit-proof fencing at cemeteries in Molong, Toogong, Garra, Cumnock, Canowindra and Cudal; • Implement water sustainability measures at Cumnock Public School; and • Enhance and improve Men's Sheds across Cabonne.

Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update After the rollercoaster ride of the previous few weeks, this week’s auction provided what many industry members were hoping for, a solid week in which prices were consolidated. Last week saw the Melbourne market rise rapidly on the final selling day, to close well in front of Fremantle who sold later in the day (as the market ran out of steam) and well in front of Sydney who did not offer at all on the final day. As a result, this week’s market was one of mixed results as the various centres re-aligned with one another. Overall Melbourne recorded some losses in the medium-broader microns, while Sydney and Fremantle played catch-up and gained ground. The skirting market attracted strong competition, pushing prices up by 30-50 cents, making the skirtings the best performing sector for the week. 29,290 bales are currently forecast for sale next week. RURAL ROUNDUP Water Security Cr John Medcalf, Chair of the Central NSW Councils is calling for more common sense and less sensationalism when working on water security in Central NSW. “The communities of the Lachlan will not run out of water in March 2020 and we are very disappointed that we are getting updated on State activities through the press. As a Joint Organisation of Councils tasked with intergovernmental collaboration, we seek to work with the government every step of the way, not pick up the pieces from misinformation,” said Cr Medcalf. “The current water sharing regime for the Lachlan, which has been in place since July, sees water till mid 2021. Advice from the State, which is regularly updated, informs communities on when they need to trigger water restrictions. More steps will be put in place where Wyangala is currently at 23.6%,” said Cr Medcalf. “Town water use of State dams is tiny in comparison to other users. Having said that, communities in Central NSW are pretty good at conserving water – we learnt a lot from the last drought. Communities like Orange at the top of the catchment are doing amazing work using only 140 litres per person per day. Sydney folk use 210.” “Councils in this region seek to work with all levels of government in water security and have provided advice to the State Government on its priorities for emergency infrastructure and water sharing plans. This region has won a national award for its work in water security. We just want to get on with the job of supporting the government in delivering on its statutory commitments for human consumption.”

Tough New Laws To Protect Local Farmers
Tough new farm trespass laws to protect Australia’s farmers from the unlawful actions of animal activists have passed the Australian Parliament. Member for Calare, Andrew Gee, said the Criminal Code Amendment (Agricultural Protection) Bill showed Australia’s farmers that Australians were on their side. “Militant animal activists have invaded farms across the country trespassing, threatening and harassing farming families. This Bill makes it a criminal offence to publish material, via a carriage service like the internet, if you intend to incite trespass, property damage or theft on agricultural land,” Mr Gee said. “The Federal Government is serious about deterring those who want to disrupt and intimidate our farmers, fishers and foresters in their homes and on their properties,” Mr Gee said anyone convicted of the offence would face up to five years in prison. “Australians expect that the farmers who feed and clothe us and many millions around the world, should not be harassed or worse, as they go about their work. Farmers have enough to worry about with this devastating drought. They shouldn’t have to lie awake at night worrying about whether they are going to be targeted by militant and loopy activists - most of whom are from the city and have no idea about the way farms or country communities operate,” Mr Gee said. “The time has come for activists to understand they can’t just descend on someone’s home and farm, interfere with their business and injure their animals. We’re not banning protests—we’re banning militant animal activists from inciting others to break the law.” The Government amended the Bill to include adding wood processing facilities to coverage under the Bill.

How long have you lived in or around Canowindra and what is the best thing about living here? Other than a small stint in Canberra after I finished school, I have always lived in Canowindra. The community spirit and the amazing health, education and sporting facilities are the best things about living here. Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I’m a Medical Receptionist for Dr Nicholas O’Ryan and also an Administration Officer at the Canowindra Hospital. I enjoy working as part of a team and being able to help people when they are in need. Occasionally I moonlight at the Canowindra Trading Post. What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? I enjoy weekend outings with my family and friends, also pedicures and shopping. What makes you proud? I am proud of my family and friends and especially my two daughters Lydia and Betty. If you could be an animal which one would you choose and why? A bird, we all need to be able to fly! What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? Dirty Dancing, I’ve lost count of how many times I have watched it, I love Patrick Swayze and it is also a great soundtrack. What is on your bucket list? Definitely some overseas travel and to see more of Australia. What are you really good at? I am good at helping people, shopping, and I am quick on the computer - scoring hard to get event tickets quickly for friends and family. Tell us about your best holiday ever? Our family camping trips with our close friends and also cruising. What makes your day? Hugs from my daughters and positive and kind feedback from patients during a work day. GREEN Thumb Keen gardeners and garden designers can usually find a spot for at least one climbing plant, whether it is to “soften” or cover an ugly wall, fence or tank stand, or to decorate an archway at the entrance to the garden or pergola attached to the house with a beautiful flowering vine. To quote prominent garden designer Paul Bangay ”one of the big benefits of climbers is that they are incredibly space efficient. They can rise to great heights without taking up too much ground space. Climbers can also assist with the temperature control of a house. Planting deciduous vines on a pergola adjacent to your home provides summer shade but allows winter sun to penetrate”. The first decision to make when considering which climber to plant is whether you want it to be evergreen (in leaf all year) or deciduous. A couple of examples of evergreen climbing plants that are suited to our region are Chinese star jasmine, Hardenbergia (Australian native plant covered in purple or white, pea like flowers at this time of year), Banksia roses (thornless, white and yellow flowering forms), and creeping fig (Ficus pumila). As for flowering, deciduous climbing plants there are a couple of “standouts” for our region. Clematis is a vigorous grower which produces beautiful flowers in a range of colours in spring. Clematis jackmanii hybrid produces big, star shape flowers with white, purple, pink and red flowering cultivars that can give you a second phase of flowering in late summer/autumn too. Wisteria is an old fashioned climbing plant that we all know coming in white, purple and blue flowering forms, some of which can produce long flowering branches (racemes) that hang down beautifully from a support structure. Finally, the climbing roses that we see producing magnificent flower displays over arches, fences and other structures in parks and gardens across our region. Canowindra Arts Youth Mentoring Program When I was growing up it was a fact of life that we had to travel in order to receive extra lessons in any specialty field we were keen on. Being the youngest of five meant the week was full of trips for Mum and Dad to and from regional towns around where we lived, to get extra curricula education. Living at Greenethorpe my parents would pick me up once a week from High School in Grenfell and we’d travel to Young for art lessons. This was over an hour round trip and occurred for at least four years. But Canowindra is a bit different. You can imagine how exciting it has been for me to be a part of an Art Mentoring Program that has been running here in Canowindra for the last 3 years. The program has offered young artists lessons in all the art basic styles and mediums and then encourages them to discover the personal field they prefer. Organised and supported by the Canowindra Arts group with strong funding support by the Sally Foundation.

The Sally Foundation is a private philanthropic organisation who invest in youth related projects in the Orange region. This year we have seen 14 young people aged 9 – 15 finish the course which culminates in an excellent Art Mentoring Exhibition to be held on the 28th September at 6pm at our Art Space at 70A Gaskill St. There will be over 50 pieces displayed from simple flowers in watercolour to teddy bears painted in Oil. I am proud to call myself a local and after talking to a lady in a nearby town recently I am excited to say that we are getting a reputation of being a town known for its art, music and culture. The Sally Foundation, founded by Geraldine and Mike Roche, are assisting local organisations and the communities in the region to improve the lives and prospects of young people. The Sally Foundation is also active in Zimbabwe where Geraldine supports a local youth drama group. By Sue Hodge
