Jarrod Amery Named As 2020 Nuffield Scholar
Four of Australia’s leading grain growers focused on a more innovative, resilient and sustainable sector, have been awarded Grains Research and Development (GRDC) supported Nuffield Farming Scholarships for 2020. Included in these four is Jarrod Amery from Forbes, who will research what it takes to build and maintain a successful farm business and achieve a sustainable Return on Assets Managed (ROAM). As owner of Amery Ag, an innovative 2,300-hectare farming operation, Jarrod produces wheat, canola and barley, and manages around 4,000 ewes as part of the business’s annual livestock trading program. “We strive to make every hectare work; earning the right to expand our business. As a young farmer myself, and with a quarter of the agricultural workforce between 18 to 35,
there is a need to equip our future farmers with the tools to grow their businesses and the industry as a whole,” Jarrod said. “On my study program, I plan to visit leading farm businesses around the world, to understand the common threads of success, including how to achieve a sustainable work/life balance, pathways to expansion and diversification, as well as how to encourage new entrants into farming.” Jarrod will receive a $30,000 bursary to research new agricultural technologies and techniques and visit leading farm enterprises around the world on a 16-week travel program. Travelling throughout major agricultural producing countries, including China and the United States, Jarrod plans to share his findings with peers, to help build a culture within Australian farming that promotes entrepreneurship and knowledge sharing.

MAYORAL NOTES Can I start by congratulating the Grazing Down the Lachlan committee for pulling together an amazing event last weekend. The weather started terribly on Saturday with that massive dust storm but as the day progressed it turned out to be a wonderful day. It was a stark reminder that we are still in drought and guests from outof-town would learn that storms such as that are becoming a common occurrence. The Grazing Breakfast was also amazing and it was great to see so many people in Templar St enjoying the entertainment and lovely food. It takes a lot of combined effort to bring an event such as Grazing together and I commend them for persevering despite the hurdles thrown their way. This week I met with Paul Toole, Minister for Regional Transport and Roads regarding the Newell Highway overtaking lanes tender. I highlighted the fact we were not happy with the recent tender process for the work being carried out in our Shire and felt no consideration was made for local tenderers. Local government are the largest road managers and must be kept in the

Lake Forbes Activation Plan Open
Forbes Shire Council has on exhibition for public comment, the plans and artists impressions for the development of Lake Forbes. The community is being asked to provide feedback on the Lake Forbes Activation Plan to enable Council to use this plan as a tool to seek funding. “The Lake Forbes Activation Plan is truly amazing, with the Lakes beautiful natural elements accentuated whilst providing some great features that can be used by tourists and visitors alike,” says Forbes Shire Mayor, Phyllis Miller OAM. “Wetland plantings have been proposed along the shoreline to create a natural aesthetic as well as improve water quality and habitat for fish. New beach areas will no doubt get everyone excited, especially families,” Mayor Miller says. “Installation of outdoor exercise equipment will definitely please the health con-
science, and give the already popular walkers more to do on their daily exercise route,” continued Mayor Miller. Other inclusions are a “Botanic” garden with exotic trees and shrubs which will include a walk of honour to consolidate the memorial plaques around the lake, a poets place and pavilion in Rotary Park. “This is a twenty year plan for our beautiful lake and there are many great projects described in the plan,” says Mayor Miller. Council are asking for community feedback in writing to be submitted by Thursday 17 October. This can be submitted via email forbes@forbes.nsw.gov.au or addressed to the General Manager, Forbes Shire Council, PO Box 333 Forbes NSW 2871. Thank You Dogs
Mental illness remains a heavy and wildly unspoken topic and through the connection people have with their dogs particularly in testing times, Thank You Dogs a new social media campaign aims to make the conversation about mental illness less cumbersome for many by incorporating their best mates of the fury kind into their stories. Rural wedding photographer, Edwina Robertson, is the content creator for the project and said it’s all about helping people open up a little more. “On the farm, your dog is probably your best worker, your best mate and they might just be your best listener too,” said Edwina If you have a story that you’d like to share about a tough time you’ve experienced and how your favourite furry friend helped you in getting through that time, then Thank You Dogs would like to hear from you. Simply follow them on Facebook and Instagram @thankyou_dogs and submit your stories and images to try and break this stigma about mental illness!
