Public spaces are to be shared by everyone, acting as supports for events and activities, they are spaces where citizens can act spontaneously and in freedom. Vallecas, a neighbourhood in Madrid had all the characteristics (or should we say lack of) of surburban development, with little vibrancy, vitality and spiritual nature. Award winning architects Ecosistema Urbano had a radical vision of ‘air trees’ to show environmental responsiveness and social status through the eco-boulevard structure. They were very aware that the best adaptation of a public space is that involving thick and solid trees, to bring life to the lack of activity due to irresponsible planning. The presence of nature in day to day life is recognised by us as a source of reflection on life. People often search for nature to relax and escape the city, structures such as these in Madrid help them to combine the two, thus emerging the new generation of urban gardens. Two key objectives for this project were, one of social nature to generate more activity and one of environmental nature, to improve the microclimate through a bioclimatic adaptation of an outdoor space. The three cylinders of which this structure consists of work as support that houses an air circulation system, regulating temperature and humidity whilst also creating a frame for climbing plants to grow upwards. These systems are evapotranspirative systems which are often used in green houses creating a climatic adaptive environments. These spaces are 8 to 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the city in the summer making it a comfortable social activity place for the public to hang out and participate in and watch entertainment shows. Inside each pavilion the space is focused inwards providing an escape from the urban surroundings. Circling the top of the eco boulevard structure are numerous solar photovoltaic panels allowing the pavilions to be completely self sufficient for energy. It only consumes what can be produced through the panels, selling surplus energy created back to the grid on a feeding tariff system. This extra income helps to finance the maintenance of the structure. A self-sufficient creation that can be easily dismantled and replicated throughout other parts of the city to create an atmosphere that invites and promotes social activity in public space. The outer structure of these pavilions can then later on be dismantled for the future when inactivity and climatic adapatation problems are resolved, steel frameworks can be left that will be covered by densely grown vines with incredible aesthetic appealas if it were a clearing in the forest. Innovations such as the eco boulevard are creating a new generation of creative architecture where urban and nature can be entwined. Words by Sarah Taylor

Growing in popularity and fashionable status eco living is becoming a lot easier due to the rapid increase in green choices readily available for consumers today. Whether it is the food in our fridge, the cars that we drive or the skin products we choose, we can now opt for a range of sustainable products to go alongside the recycling and conserving we do to help with our environment. So it seems ironic that the most fashionable trend driven industry of all has never previously seemed to find the right allure for sustainability. The dull stereotype that eco fashion has been widely associated with in the fashion world has not been able to shift for many years due to the rapid increase of fast fashion on the high street not paying it much attention. Tons of textile waste goes into UK landfill each year due to the driving force of throw away trends inspired by the catwalk season by season. There is an abundance of highly

respected brands within the UK that we all know and love that would not have the nerve to be completely transparent in their production process. To tell us how they achieved to create the products that we are yearning for would be too shameful, however Fairtrade fashion is on the uprising and more and more brands are eager to get involved. H & M’s new Conscious Collection for Spring/ Summer 2011 is a breath of fresh air for the high street consumer who is struck by this brand new range as soon as they walk in the shop. The whole collection is in different shades of white with a flash of floral prints, a major trend this season carrying a romantic theme across the womenswear range with light flowing skirts, shirts and tunics with lacey details and English embroidery playing a large part of the collection. Materials include organic cotton and linen, recycled polyester and wool, Tencel and recycled plastics for their accessories range.

The fabric that strikes as most unfamiliar within this list is ‘Tencel’ which is a brand name from a fiber generically called lyocell. It is accepted as a natural fiber in the fashion industry and is a soft, draping, luxurious and breathable fabric which is in fact environmentally sustainable but not necessarily healthy. To transform Lyocell fibers into fabric can use the same harsh chemicals and processes used in the conventional fabrics, it is difficult for dyes to bind to it due to its relatively low surface energy. However the white and cream palette throughout the collection boasts that no toxic dyes have been used to produce the garments and for the products to display the green label that is attached onto this collection it must be at least 95% sustainable materials. Therefore H & M shoppers are confident in what they are purchasing as an environmentally conscious buy. The only contradictory fact to this section of the store that is called ‘The Conscious Collection’ is that when you go to pur-

chase your items you receive a plastic bag with the words ‘Conscious Collection’ branded on it, quite the oxymoron to the sustainable message the brand is trying to send out and promote to customers. REVIVE were extremely impressed by the quality and attractiveness of the H & M Conscious Collection for our photo shoot and applaud the mainstream brand for their efforts of making sustainable style easily accessible and beautiful. And this time eco-conscious and organic materials doesn’t mean more money, as the H & M Conscious Collection comes at affordable prices. Whilst there is still a little room for improvement they are a step in the right direction and a good prototype to show us what’s to come for the brand and also set a good platform for other high street brands to follow. REVIVE are keen to see the sustainable movement become a fashion revolution and it is big brands like H & M that are the ones to make it happen.

blur my vision... - First you need to pick a background that is quite simple yet has bold colours and create a new document to chosen size. - Cut your model out with your preferred tool of choice, I used the magnetic lasso tool for this, now place the model on the new back ground. - Scale to fit and merge the layers together - Duplicate this layer. - Whilst on new layer we want to create a radial blur, Filter>Blur>Radial Blur. Choose desired vanishing point and zoom. - The elliptical marquee tool is your next friend to remove the blurry face, select and feather to avoid ugly harsh edges. - Now dupllicate this layer and to make the lines stronger go to Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask. - Use the elliptical marquee tool again to draw a circle around half of the zoom area Select>Inverse>Delete. - It’s now time to use your imagination and play around with contrast and brightness to get the job done! Flatten the image and voila!....an energized new photo is found. 51

Editorial A hypothetical magazine article for Interview Magazine on celebrity icon Liza Minnelli Layout. Photography. Editorial

LIZA Is Life Cabaret? Excitement. Trauma, Passion. Success. Are all things that the iconic star liza minnelli has experienced in her colourful career. there are two lizas: the dynamic entertainer whose amplifier voice creates passion and excitement in her audience. then there is the private liza, the vulnerable, drug obsessed, show biz princess. liza minnelli has opened a lot of eyes uncovering the secrets behind hers, the realities, the truths. The real liza minnelli. By Sarah Taylor

“Rise above reality”, are Liza Minnelli’s words that she seems to live by. And who can blame her? What kind of reality would being the only daughter of Hollywood Royalty Wizard of Oz star Judy Garland and Oscar Winning movie director Vincente minnelli entail? The answer is one far from ordinary. Normality was not something that was apparent in this woman’s life. Liza Minnelli was destined to become someone special, and she has become just that. Liza Minneli’s childhood experiences were a mixture of fairytale and bleak reality; Liza became a judgment of her family background. Born into this turbulent family, Liza opted to find her own identity in world in which her mother found triumph and tragedy. Some would even call her a ‘pale imitation’ of the towering talent that was Judy Garland. As years went by the associations prevailed, the good and the bad. Liza has followed in her mother’s footsteps of becoming a gay icon, the gay community embraces Judy Garland, they have embraced her legacy, and the rainbow flag is a symbol of gay pride. It is impossible for the associations not to be there as Liza Minnelli is also now a major gay icon. If Liza was born with her mother’s talent she certainly inherited some darker traits along the way too, including

him to nerve damage during her drunken rages in their 16 month marriage in 2002. This became one of her ‘behind closed doors’ scenarios that escalated into an extremely public breakdown, which the star completely denied. Emphasis is made on the fact that Gest was the third of Liza’s four husbands, this is regardless of the alleged affairs that she also had that adds to Liza’s colourful past. Celebrity is a dangerous status as it quite often destroys those whom it creates. Liza Minnelli upholds such endearing qualities when facing her ordeals; her faith and her determination are what the public and media have underestimated. These qualities have pulled her through the heartache and trauma of her showbiz life and upheld her glamorous exterior. Some have said that she succumbed to her demons because of ‘lack of will power’, Liza: “I have won 3 Tony’s, an Academy Award, 3 Golden Globes, this that and the other… a lack of will power!

“ this is what i

love doing, the dancing the singing, this is where i belong.

a long battle with drugs and alcoholism being involved in the Studio 54 scene and an excessively stormy personal life. For much of the 80s Liza Minnelli stared at the walls of rehab. Liza: “I believe all drunks go to heaven, because they’ve been through hell on earth.” However Liza strongly emphasises that alcoholism is a disease, and not once has she blamed her mother for her succumbing to it.

David Gest, Liza’s third husband would have something to say about this as he claimed and attempted to sue Liza $10 million on the grounds of her physically assaulting him and subjecting

I don’t think so.” She has dealt with her demons through humour and hope, and honesty. Liza: “As long as the world goes round – it’ll be alright.” “My mother always said to me, you need to be a first rate version of yourself not a second rate version of somebody else.” This is what Liza always strived to be. In 1969 her mother Judy Garland died of an overdose. Coincidentally, not long

after this, the comparisons towards Liza’s shadowing talent died too. Liza Minnelli was soon to portray a role that would make her a phenomenon, a legendry star, a star in her own right. This was no other than her stunning portrayal of ‘Sally Bowles’ in the 1972 hit film Cabaret. However as far as personal battles were concerned these were still there, following the death of her mother Liza was prescribed tranquillisers as part of a coping mechanism and in 1984 she was checked into the Betty Ford Clinic to deal with an addiction to drugs. In a harsh re

ality it would seem that regardless to whatever else she was partial to Liza was addicted to attention to pull her through her stage presence was her life, much like the girl she plays in her iconic performance in Cabaret. The story of good time girl Sally Bowles, is about a British singer floating in the midst of the decadent Berlin nightclub scene in the 1930s who pines to be an actress. She quickly descends to the debauchery of the time by singing on the cabaret and giving herself to easy sex. ‘Cabaret’ captures the fun, danger, sexual freedom and overall spirit of 1930s Berlin. Liza’s assessment of Sally Bowles is “a girl who improvises her whole life and her fantasy of tomorrow is so strong.” How interestingly this reflects with her personal characteristics. Liza said her father taught her how to rise above things to live through tomorrow and her dreams, joy and love instead of getting tough. Liza: “The past is finished for me. I’ve lived it. So I cannot think why it should be so interesting.” It seems uncanny that the fictional character that excelled Liza to become an all time media sensation is the one that is most similar to her, an extension of her own personality. Cy Feur the producer of Cabaret was convinced after seeing her performance that not only could Liza play Sally Bowles but she actually was Sally Bowles. It seems the 1930s Berlin Cabaret scene suited Liza’s glamorous style, persona and habits of that insatiable quest for joy. down to a tee. Sally’s style, her sexual freedom, her decadent personality, her drive for her career, Liza saw in this character the things she cared about, everyone who knows her knows her work is what is most important, what gets her through. Liza talks about the stage and how she feels when she excites her crowd “This is what I love doing, the dancing the singing, this is where I belong.” Liza always stressed that there were two diverse characters to her mother’s personality there was her mother Judy Minnelli and the legend Judy Garland, it seems this is also yet another comparison true to her. The onstage and offstage

Liza, the dream and the reality, the triumphs and tragedies, you would expect a fragile star standing before you today. However it seems that this legendry star is in fact very much at peace with herself who can now expose her past vulnerabilities in an honest and humourous way, “I have had a good life, nothing can rock that anymore.” Is Liza Minnelli’s life cabaret? Or is she living a life of perpetual denial? Is it the unwillingness to face reality, or the rise above it? All could be valid outlooks on how Liza Minnelli has become the iconic star, and musical legend that she is today. “My songs are about people who get along, who will make it, who have to make it.” Liza Minnelli to the world at large has ‘made it’ and if she has learnt anything in life it is to do exactly as she pleases, after all her dream is her reality. “Life is adversity, just getting up is adversity. But the decision to be happy is a conscious choice. I like that, that it’s up to you.”

“ What good is sitting alone in your room, come here the music play. Life is a cabaret old chum, only a cabaret.
