Brief

This brief is to produce a 7-inch vinyl cover for a chosen song out of a selection of 7.

The approach to this brief is to use only visuals and not give away the name or artist of the chosen song.

Research

As this was a short brief, much of the research time was spent looking into the chosen song ‘Reflections’ by Diana Ross and the Supremes.

The concept for the designs came from just listening to the song a few times over and looking into the instrumental set up of it.

Concept

The concept behind the initial design stages focus around the use of tambourines, while also making reference to the dynamic between the vocalists.

This encouraged two themes, one using shapes of tambourines and the other focusing around the number three.

OUGD603 Extended Practice

Development

Much of the development features illustrative shapes similar to that of a tambourine. They look into varied approaches to the illustration and also into the layout. One design features the hairstyles of the vocalists but it was decided that this may be too obvious and took away from the challenge of the brief.

The final design was chosen out of a selection because it exhibits the use of tambourines in three but also because it brings a sense of modernity to the song, which dates back to the 1960s.

While some of the other designs could have been appropriate, they all appeared to representative of a more hippie style of music, which does not work in conjunction with the Motown vibe to ‘Reflections’.
