design brief project overview & background The world of peanut butter has many different faces. There is the organic, the alternative options (Sun, Almond, etc.), the all-natural-but-not-organic, the crunchy vs. creamy (and the super creamy for those that are daring), and many others. Similarly, jelly exists in comparable amount of options: organic, seeds vs. seedless, homemade, natural-that-somehow-isn’t-organic, etc. With so many choices and minute variations, how are customers supposed to make an informed decision without having a predetermined, ridiculously tiny market niche to begin with? PB&J Inc. presents their newest product as a solution to this madness

in variety. Taking the stress out of customer’s everyday life, PB&J Inc. proposes simply that: peanut butter and jelly, sold exclusively together—an easy grab ’n go for the masses. Since multiple versions of peanut and jelly exist currently, a stylized package design is necessary to accurately relay their mission. The final design solution will implement a linked package design for both peanut butter and jelly with a welcoming and playful aesthetic. The solution will reflect an air of clarity while combining two items commonly purchased simultaneously. The product will be available for diverse audiences.

category review PB&J Inc. can be classified as an American manufacturing company of peanut butter and fruit spreads. PB&J Inc. is not cleverly owned by an older brother corporation, but is an independent organization working to simplify the world of peanut butter and jelly. The company can be classified under products and services, for their mission is to provide clear, quick decision products for like-minded peanut butter and jelly enthusiasts. The primary competition for PB&J include the leading manufacturers in the respective areas. Peanut Butter man-

ufactures include Smucker’s (including Jif), Peter Pan, Skippy, and in-house brands such as Wegman’s. Leading fruit spread companies include Smucker’s, Welch’s, Wegman’s, Great Value, Trader Joe’s, and various homemade brands sold in stores and at farmers markets. In addition, Smucker’s “Goober” product, a single jar combination of peanut butter and jelly, is direct competition. Although PB&J Inc.’s new product is packaging the two (peanut butter & jelly) items together but in separate jars, the idea has been presented to the market before.

target audience The target audience for this project includes (older) high school and college students, ages ranging between sixteen and twenty-four. This audience has limited disposable income and most only work part-time jobs. The median weekly earning for this audience is $193 for men and $178 for women1. The line of packaging will be designed to attract 1

this audience by focusing on the ease and cost effectiveness of living on peanut butter and jelly (either as a snack or a staple meal), as well as appeal to their energetic and humorous mindset. PB&J wishes to attract as many customers confused by the disarray of choices for peanut butter and jelly, but is focusing their energy on this group first.

With these examples, I was looking at various illustration styles, use of imagery, and patterns. I especially like the simplicity in most of the designs, regardless of how intricate they are.
