About Us WHAT WE OFFER Facilities for safely storing canoes and kayaks are available, allowing participants to arrive at the boathouse by public transportation, bicycle or car for your downtown adventures. One of the largest events is the Mayor’s hike bike and paddle that occurs annually on Labor Day and Memorial Day. Visit the Louisville Community Boathouse facebook page for instructional and racing opportunities.
THE PLACE FOR PADDLESPORTS Metro Louisville has over 130 miles of rivers and streams for paddlesports and sailing. There are over 25 boat launch sites available for exploration by individuals and families; it is a true gateway to our region’s natural areas. From the Community Boathouse dock, paddlers have direct access to Louisville’s waterfront and Beargrass Creek. The Beargrass Creek and Ohio River Confluence is one of the region’s best birding spots. Caution must be exercised while paddling from the boathouse, as the Ohio River is a major Commercial transportation corridor, the channel is well marked. The Community Boathouse is Louisville’s center for paddlesport instruction, promoting safety and paddlesport racing in our community.

Water Sports LOUISVILLE ROWING CLUB What is the Louisville Rowing Club? At the Louisville Rowing Club members row for a variety of reasons, including exercise, competition, camaraderie and recreation and, generally, a love for the out-of-doors and water. The Louisville Rowing Club (LRC) is a private, not-for-profit organization with the mission of promoting rowing in the Metro Louisville area. LRC is home to a masters (adult) rowing program, juniors high school program and an adaptive rowing program. You can find out more information at the Louisville Rowing Club webpage: www.louisvillerowingclub.org or at each of the program’s Facebook pages:
ABOUT ROWING Rowing has been used as a means of transportation for more than a thousand years and is one of the original sports in the modern Olympic games. Rowing can be an individual endeavor or involve teamwork in larger boats. A rower sits in a seat that slides along a track. The feet are fixed against a foot plate, and one uses the power of his or her legs to push against the foot plate and move the seat along the slide. This effort pushes the oars through the water and moves the boat. There are two basic types of boats – sculling boats and sweep boats. A scull can be rowed by one person (single), two people (double) or four (quad). Sweep boats include a “coxswain” to steer the boat and direct the rowers. A sweep boat can be rowed by four or eight people.
ALREADY KNOW HOW TO ROW? At LRC, we have access to miles of beautiful river for great recreational rowing. If you’re looking for something more challenging, we have competitive programs that have regular coached practices. For more info on becoming a member please visit our website at: www. louisvillerowingclub.org.

WATER QUALITY Follow recognized safety procedures: wear a life jacket, watch the weather, and don’t paddle alone. Avoid going into the commercial boat channel on the Ohio and do not paddle while the river is in flood stage. Water Quality: Beargrass Creek is an urban stream, and as with all urban streams it is polluted. The MSD Project Win (Waterway’s Improvement Now) maintains a website to inform the public of current conditions.www.msdlouky.org/projectwin/ They use a three color code system: Green = conditions are normal Yellow = somewhere in Metro Louisville there are water quality problems Red = due to heavy rains, the streams are more polluted
