Racial Discrimination in the Classroom Sarah Rubin Communication Design: Voice Messaging System

Summary

In transitional neighborhoods or urban areas, children can sometimes feel in a minority from lack of diversity in a classroom. Bullying occurs frequently in these situations because of racial background or skin color in the classroom. As a child progresses through elementary school and into middle school, these actions usually continue once one child begins bullying; bullying can sometimes be a chain reaction. The consequence of racial discrimination in early elementary schools is drastic when young children are not educated about the severity of this issue.

Problem

Teachers can help educate young children about the importance of racial diversity as well as advocating for anti-bullying.

Primary Audience

Children in public schools from first to third grade

Desired Behavior

The primary audience should want to stop bullying and think about treating all kids in the classroom with respect

Main Message

Recommended Tactics

When children are bullied, their academics, self-image, achievements, and emotional statuses are at risk. Education of bullying/teasing about racial discrimination helps young children decrease these issues in the classroom. If discrimination can in first grade, it can minimize bullying before children get older. Racial discrimination still exists in schools, especially with younger children. 1. Poster for classroom 2.
