Design Manifesto

Design is Everywhere Sarah Rubin

Manifesto “Design is in everything we make, but itʼs also between those things. Itʼs a mix of craft, science, storytelling, propaganda, and philosophy.” — Erik Adigard

Method I created a flier to entice people across campus to learn about everyday objects that are designed. I added a post-it note with a specific fact to spotlight an item. I designed a relatable experience by installing these fliers during lunch hours to talk to people about my manifesto and ideals.

Did you know this was designed?

Process Many people wanted to talk to me about my installation. Once I told them my manifesto, they started thinking about simple objects in their everyday lives. The project was approachable to non-designers, so people felt their opinions mattered. In addition, I was able to collect a few statements from various people about my project.

Design to me is something that makes me look twice — it doesn't have to be in a magazine or on a billboard. However, if something in my way can make me think twice about how it was made or crafted, that's cool design. Senior, Psychology and History majors

I think design can be seen in almost everything around us. Â It could be something obvious like the design of a building, or something not so obvious like the pattern left in grass after mowing the lawn. Â It doesn't necessarily have to be intentional. Junior, Biology major

This manifesto means that everything, including a typeface on the computer and kitchen utensils, was designed. There is nothing that we interact with that has not been carefully considered by a designer. Senior, Art History major

Future I believe that the topic “design is everywhere could be brought into many communities to teach about the importance of design. To expand this project, I would love to send this presentation to AIGA chapters and to make a website collecting several images from all across the country surrounding this theme.
