A New Train of Thought: Telluride Depot transforms into the TELLURIDE SCIENCE & INNOVATION CENTER
Renovations at the iconic Telluride Depot are underway as Telluride Science moves forward with its plan to transform the beloved building into the Telluride Science & Innovation Center. With careful restoration, the structure will retain its historic charm while moving into the 21st century with significant energy efficiency improvements and a fully remodeled interior. The revitalized Depot will provide a permanent home for Telluride Science as well as a beautiful gathering space for all of Telluride to enjoy.
Since 1984, Telluride Science has gathered together the brightest minds from around the world to contemplate grand challenges and push forward the boundaries of science. Today, the organization annually hosts nearly 1,400 scientists and engineers from as many as 500 international and domestic scientific institutions, with five Nobel Prize winners among their ranks.
The renovated Depot will enable Telluride Science to expand its offering of science workshops and support a new line of innovation workshops aimed at defining breakthroughs with meaningful impact on society and/or the planet.
“Having a home of our own for a year-round programming space to host both science and innovation workshops will
further amplify Telluride’s reputation as a global driver in generating ideas and solutions that address some of society’s and the planet’s most critical challenges,” said Mark Kozak, Executive Director of Telluride Science.
Telluride has long inspired innovation. In the late 1800s, entrepreneurs LL Nunn and George Westinghouse used Nikola Tesla’s discovery of alternating electrical current to make Telluride the first town in the country to be powered by alternating current electric power.
Over the past 38 years, participants in Telluride Science workshops have contributed to significant advances in a vast array of scientific pursuits – from energy, to the environment, to biomedical science. Decades ago, some of the first discussions about the Human Genome Project occurred during a Telluride Science workshop, and in just the past few years, a Telluride Science workshop spawned an entirely new field of science called Physical Genomics. Telluride Science Board Member and part-time Telluride resident Vadim Backman of Northwestern University is a leader in this new pursuit which has the potential to enable
the reprogramming of cells to prevent and treat diseases like cancer or Alzheimer’s.
“The impact that we have globally on the advancement of science is really remarkable,” continued Kozak. “We are a force multiplier for scientific productivity because we host scientists from all around the world who brainstorm new ideas and collaboratively look at problems from an interdisciplinary perspective. This collaborative approach generates out-ofthe-box thinking and prompts many new ideas. The scientists then take those novel ideas back to their own teams and make those institutions more productive.”
Telluride Science is known throughout the scientific community for its inclusive and collaborative atmosphere. That ethos paired with Telluride’s inspiring natural landscape has proven to be a particularly potent combination.
“Our scientists consistently comment about the unique Telluride Science workshop experience,” said Managing Director of Telluride Science, Cindy Fusting. “The intimate nature of our workshops is very unusual for scientific gatherings. The scientists appreciate the small group format where unpublished work is openly discussed. Often approaching a particular challenge from different viewpoints and disciplines, our participants are encouraged to ask questions and engage in spirited conversation. Unstructured time spent outside of the classroom is also important. We regularly hear about exciting, novel ideas sparked from conversations along the trail or on the chairlift.”
The successful Telluride Science workshop format is already in use in a few Telluride Innovation workshops. The inaugural Decarbonization of Cement workshop was held in 2021, and a follow-up workshop will be held in March of 2023. Participants are working on a new way to reduce the carbon footprint of the cement-making process. If the cement industry were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter in the world, after China and the USA. Another Innovation workshop, The Future of Industry, Where Today Meets Tomorrow, explores how technical advances in robotics, artificial intelligence, edge computing, generative design and more can help make the manufacturing process more efficient. The Electric Grid of the Future workshop focuses on how to develop a power grid capable of storing and transmitting clean and renewable energy on a grand scale.
Currently, Telluride Science hosts around 60 workshops a year, the majority of them in the summer months, utilizing spaces leased from the Telluride School District. The Telluride Science & Innovation Center will allow for year-round programming and marked expansion of the organization’s science and innovation programming. The Center will also allow for expanded public programming. Traditionally, Telluride Science has hosted Town Talks on Tuesdays in June and July. The new building will create opportunities to host educational talks throughout the year as well as new weekend seminars on exciting public interest topics.
“The Depot has served as a connection to the outside world since 1891 when it was a hub for the Rio Grande Southern Railway. Back then, precious metals were exported from Telluride,” said Annie Carlson, Director of Donor Relations for Telluride Science. “With this project, it will be a community focal point once again, but this time we will be exporting ideas and innovation.”
With an expected build time of 16-18 months, the organization plans to open the doors of the Telluride Science & Innovation Center in the summer of 2024. Former Telluride resident Dylan Henderson, with SALT Architects, has designed the new center, and Werner Catsman of Finbro Construction will lead the renovation.
Once complete, Telluride Science will eagerly welcome the community back to the Depot. Along with public programming through the Telluride Science & Innovation Center, the building will be available to rent for community gatherings, private events, rehearsal dinners, weddings, corporate meetings, and more.
Telluride Science has raised $7.5 of the $12 million needed to fund the building purchase and renovation. To learn more about the Telluride Science & Innovation Center and ways to support it, contact Annie Carlson at annie@telluridescience.org.
Telluride Science workshops are unique due to their small size and collaborative nature. Some of the most innovative ideas and productive discussions occur in the “outdoor classroom.”Reimagining Local Healthcare: Telluride
Regional Medical Center Looks Toward the Future
By Chris Darnell, CEO Telluride Regional Medical CenterAs any homeowner can tell you, older homes might have a certain charm, but they also require a lot of work to maintain and can be expensive to upgrade. It is no secret that like an old home, the Telluride Regional Medical Center could use some work. We long ago outgrew our current location. In fact, the Telluride Hospital District identified the need for a new space 17 years ago.
Every year we see more patient visits in both primary and emergency care. Our staff has been incredibly creative, especially during the pandemic, to meet the needs of the community, but it is long past time to move to a space that better serves our patients, our staff and our community.
Our clinic is nearly 45 years old, and with less than 10,000 square feet to work with, we have limited suitable space for patient care. We are optimistic that at some point in the near future, the Telluride Hospital District will finalize an agreement with Genesee Partners to secure a parcel of land at Society Turn where we can build a new hospital.
Today, our team manages to provide comprehensive primary care, 24/7 emergency and trauma services, behavioral health, imaging services, and laboratory services within the confines of a limited space with a host of challenges to work around, including a lack of privacy and handicap access. There are no beds for overnight stays, which means if a patient needs to be hospitalized, we transfer them to another facility that
might be hours away from home, putting stress on the patients and their family members.
Our goal is to build a new hospital where we can offer expanded services, including more modern exam rooms, room for specialists and additional imaging services including MRI, mammography and ultrasound. The new hospital will also add surgery, endoscopy and beds for inpatient observation and post-acute care. It will have a helipad for emergency transports, allowing us to save time and save lives.
The new hospital will be approximately 40,000 square feet, about four times the size of our current home. It will have 85 dedicated parking spaces for patients and their families. The Society Turn location will be equidistant from Telluride and Mountain Village and will be readily accessible by car, bus, and bike. There will also be a covered entrance for patients and visitors.
Just imagine. No more long drives for important health screenings. Overnight stays in a hospital where everyone knows your name. A modern, welcoming space with more privacy that matches the level of care you’ve come to expect from TRMC.
By transforming and elevating the level of care with a new hospital, this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine local healthcare for Telluride and the surrounding communities.
Raising the Bar
NEW CHAIRLIFTS! AND OTHER MOUNTAIN IMPROVEMENTS
TREC: What can you tell us about the new chairlifts going up in Mountain Village?
Pittenger: “The new Lift 9 is one of the largest lifts to be built in North America this year. This is the culmination of years of planning and work with the US Forest Service and Doppelmayr to find the right lift and timing to replace the old lift. The physical project started the day after we closed in April, and we hope to be complete by the holiday season. This is one of the most beautiful, revered pods of terrain at any ski area, and we are excited to be servicing this area and our guests with a new lift.”
2
TREC: What do you think is the most interesting thing about the process a layperson might want to know?
Pittenger: “Building a ski lift is pretty “in-your-face”; there is a lot of heavy equipment, specialized equipment and personnel, and the helicopters are pretty hard to miss. We have been fielding a lot of questions regarding whether we could re-use any of the infrastructure of the old lift and the answer is basically “no”. All the towers and foundations are new due to significant increase in size and forces at play with a new lift. We have been able to shave off a few towers due to the new design, so there are now a few new turns to make on your way down. The old lift has found a new home at another ski area and will ultimately be re-used, which was our first choice as the machine has been well taken care of and will live on in a less stressful environment. A perfect retirement for our old friend.”
TREC: What’s special to note when riding the new lift?
Pittenger: “If you are taking notes, you had better do it quickly. We have cut the ride time in half with the new lift.”
4
TREC: How does this separate the Telluride Ski Resort from other ski resorts?
Pittenger: “Our community, dramatic landscape, and incredible terrain really set us apart, but we like to hang our hats on tremendous customer service and guest experience. Maintaining and upgrading lifts is part of this experience and we are happy to continue to improve.”
TREC: What can you tell us about the new pipelines for snowmaking?
Pittenger: “Much of what we have installed replaced infrastructure that was at the end of its life in the ground and was showing signs of weakness. We are very excited about the new lines connecting the top of Lift 6 to See Forever at Joint Point. This is an incredibly important ski-way that sees a great amount of traffic and sunshine. Improving our ability to efficiently make snow in this area will make early season connectivity much more reliable.”
TREC: How does this all play into the Master Plan and what line items do we have left on that?
Pittenger: “We took a big chunk out of the Master Plan this summer, but there is still quite a bit that we would like to accomplish. The plan is a guide and as we grow and our guests’ expectations change, we have to adjust our plan from time to time. As it pertains to our upper mountain, replacing Lift 9, updating our infrastructure, and ultimately Giuseppe’s is a big piece of the puzzle. There will be more lifts to replace in the coming years and infrastructure to update, but we like to stay flexible to both meet our needs and our guests’ desires.”
TREC: What can we expect come Winter 2023?
Pittenger: “The new lift will change how people move around the mountain. Access times from Town to the upper mountain, Gold Hill, and Prospect are going to be significantly reduced. We look forward to seeing how this changes people’s skiing habits as well as our own efficiency. We have also done a great amount of work this summer on our trails and glades that will improve skiing. The Gold Hill I goat path project was a big undertaking in incredibly difficult terrain that was amazingly executed by our team. This should have a tremendous impact on the availability of that terrain to our guests. We are always trying to enhance our guest experience and our extraordinary staff improves every day.”
TREC: Based on your tenure here in Telluride, how do you see (all of) this impacting the community?
Pittenger: “We live in a small, terrific community and we look at every project and operation through the lens of our impact on those around us. We see the projects of this summer, improving infrastructure, our lift network, and availability of terrain as net positive for the community and our guests from out of town.”
TREC: What other prominent projects do you have on the horizon?
Pittenger: “Next up will be Giuseppe’s. There was simply too much to be done at the top of Lift 9 to squeeze that project in this year. This space on our mountain is simply too important to hastily rebuild. Our hope is to build a restaurant truly deserving
of this amazing home on our ridge that will take advantage of the natural beauty of the environment and provide excellent service to our guests.”
TREC: What are your main goals for the mountain next year? In five years?
Pittenger: “Next year will be dedicated to Giuseppe’s and utility installation to service the new restaurant. We are also dedicated to continuing to improve our snowmaking infrastructure, and building more bike trails. Forest health is going to be a primary focus of the Resort. We have been working with the US Forest Service and hope to make some landscape-scale improvements to the health of the forest on the Resort in the coming years. This will not only improve the health and resiliency of our forest and help to reduce wildfire risk to the Resort and the surrounding community, but add an ancillary benefit of more amazing tree skiing on the mountain.”
TREC: What accomplishment are you/your team most proud of?
Pittenger: “Every day I am amazed at the dedication and talent encompassed within our team at the Resort. I could not be more proud of the people that make this place work and the community they create. The accomplishment of finishing a huge job like Lift 9, 20,000 feet of new pipeline or a new bike trail is spectacular, but to get up early the following morning and step up to the next challenge on the mountain is truly inspiring.”
TREC: If you had all the money and time in the world, what would you like to see develop in our area?
Pittenger: “Affordable housing. This is really a communitywide issue and one that necessitates all stakeholders and local governments come to the table to create solutions. There have been some great projects completed, but we need more. We need more right here in Telluride and Mountain Village. I truly believe that this can be done effectively to help house our community, retain the services that we all rely upon, and reduce our carbon footprint. Money is not truly the issue, we need collaboration – however being able to foot the bill myself might grease the wheels.”
one to one mentoring program
Buddies for Life
One to One Mentoring is a program that empowers youth ages 5-18 in San Miguel County and the West End of Montrose County to achieve their social, emotional and academic potential through professionally-supported mentor relationships.
One to One Mentoring was founded by two staff members from the San Miguel County departments of Social Services and Juvenile Diversion in 1994 under the Durango, Colorado Big Brothers Big Sisters’ framework for one-to-one community-based mentoring. It later became part of Partners of Montrose-Delta-Ouray counties and finally became independent in 1999. The pair saw the opportunity to deepen wrap-around care for at-risk youth by introducing youth mentoring to the county.
Since its inception the program has served thousands of youths throughout the county. Presently, the opportunities addressed through the organization’s programs continue to focus on at-risk youth but have expanded to include a diverse array of needs including LGBTQ support, grief counseling, chronic health issues, and a need for companionship. The organization is the only provider of one-to-one youth mentoring in the county.
According to Executive Director Tara Kelley, “The process of becoming a mentor is easy. Applications are online. Once you fill out an application, you will be interviewed, do a background check, and then will be matched with a youth in our community with which you share common interests.”
“Many people are extremely busy and that is the first thing they tell us, ‘I just don’t have time,’ ” Kelley said. “What one of our mentors said years ago that I tell potential mentors, ‘if you have time for friends, you have time to be a mentor,’ ” she added. “The goals of the organization contribute to the health of our society as a whole and as community members, we can contribute to that.”
Kelley said, “Mentoring impacts the Telluride community by helping youth have a trusting adult in their lives. It gets adults involved with youth, doing activities throughout our community. We all need mentors in our life, and by becoming mentors, you are helping a child have a consistent adult in their lives. We have many children on our waitlist and are always looking for mentors, especially male mentors. Being a mentor only takes a couple hours a week.”
According to Kelley, One to One Mentoring is grateful for matches that demonstrate the benefits of mentoring. During her and her husband Scott Kelley’s tenure here in Telluride, they have seen the benefits and inspiration that comes from mentoring.
Three years ago, “Ben”, the middle of three children living in a single-parent immigrant household in Mountain Village, was a fifth grader suffering from extreme shyness, lack of confidence and anxiety to the extent that he struggled with basic communication. Ben found making friends challenging because he was unsure how to talk with other children and struggled to make academic gains, to manage his schoolwork, and to interact in the classroom.
Ben was subsequently matched with a retired couple who have adult sons. Their early goals included modeling communication and social interaction, as well as introducing Ben to outdoor activities and the area’s natural environment, in neither of which he had any experience. Their first outing was to Bridal Veil Falls, where Ben expressed surprise that there was a waterfall. Over time, Ben has become more communicative and outgoing, and has made social and academic gains – aided in part by his mentors taking him to get eyeglasses so he could see the board in his classroom. He has also grown into an avid skier and mountain biker, pursuits he enjoys doing with his outdoorsy mentors.
Imet my buddy when she was in the sixth grade. She was bright and funny, but needed a little help finding the confidence necessary in order for her to be able to show the world what she had to offer. We skied, hiked and baked together. Once we even won the most creative sled in the annual Cardboard Sled Derby, a fundraiser held by the One to One Mentor program. As she was exploring her interests and finding her strong qualities, she decided she wanted to take an art class. Somehow, we were able to talk an Ah Haa art teacher into allowing me, a 38-year-old, to join her class that was meant for fourth- through eighth-graders so we could be together. When my mentee entered high school her schedule was really tight, so we thought it would be best if I helped coach her volleyball team. I didn’t really even know how to play, but at least I would be there to help her through the trials and triumphs of becoming a teenager. Some of my fondest memories are from when we would meet at the Cornerhouse and play games like Farkle, or create stories out of emojis and then read them back to each other. It was incredible watching her blossom as the years went on; her social anxiety waned and her athleticism shined. Learning that she determined she could attend college was just icing on the cake. Not that she necessarily wanted to go to college, but that she now had the confidence and knew she had options in life as an adult meant that she was going to show the world who she is and what she can offer.
Iwas matched with Robert over 20 years ago with the One to One program. Though the program only runs through high school, Robert and I have carried on our friendship that endures today. Robert is now 32 years old and gainfully employed in a management position with a local lodging entity. I’m proud of the responsible man he’s become and the One to One program played a large role in that. As a long-time mentor and board member of One to One, I can say with confidence that mentoring works. I’d encourage anyone to get involved with One to One, whether becoming a mentor or simply donating financially to the program.
It’s no surprise then that Ben’s older brother, “Alex”, soon expressed interest in (and has since been matched with) a mentor. Alex, whose summer job was at a well-known Mountain Village restaurant, was matched with a mentor who is the young executive director of a local conservation nonprofit that is working to connect the local immigrant community to the outdoors. One recent activity? A traverse of the area’s iconic Via Ferrata, which Ben and Alex took part in, together with Alex’s mentor and members of the immigrant community. Ben now wants to scale the Via Ferrata again, this time with his own mentors.
“Connections like these do not happen without One to One Mentoring, the only organization of its kind in San Miguel County and the West End communities of Montrose County,” Kelley said.
“We just finished our most successful fundraiser, that we have not been able to do for two years due to Covid, Top Chef and Taste of Telluride, which is held in August. Our next big event in March is the Cardboard Sled Derby. This is truly the only event in Telluride that is all about the kids and is one of our most successful,” Kelley said. “Our main goals are to keep finding mentors and matching adults with youth in our community. We are continuing to grow in the West End and we hope to continue to grow in San Miguel County.”
Kelley added that the One to One team is most proud of their long-term matches. Nationwide most matches last for nine months, and their average match lasts over three years. They also have many past matches that have grown out of the program, but they are still connected in their adult life. *Check out the special breakout segments of personal testimonies from our own brokers, Dan Henschel and Kiplynn Smith, on their life-changing experiences through the program.
Top on her wish list for the future? “I would like to see a youth center that would also house One to One so our matches have a place to meet and do activities. It would also be a place for kids to have somewhere to go after school with supervision,” Kelley said.
Kelley added, “You can get involved by becoming a mentor. Or if you don’t want to become a mentor but want to help One to One, you can volunteer for our fundraisers and group activities or assist by donating,”

Design Considerations When Buying An Investment Property
By Amanda LaurenBuying an investment property is a major decision. Not only is it vital to choose the right home in the right area, but it’s very likely the home will need to be renovated. If the property will be used as a short-term rental, it must also be furnished. When working with design changes, there are many key decisions to be made. Creating a beautiful space while staying on budget can be challenging, but fortunately, it doesn’t have to be. I spoke with some of the top interior designers and experts nationwide to learn what the most important design considerations are when buying an investment property. Whether you’re in the market for a single-family home, condo, a new build, or a fixer-upper, read on before you submit your next offer.
Make As Many Decisions As Possible Upfront
Renovating an investment property is a major undertaking. So, Annie Elliott, Product and Design Manager for New Again Houses, a company that transforms old houses into fantastic modern homes, says it’s best to plan all the major changes and make as many design decisions as far in advance as possible. “Making design choices at the front end of your project is incredibly helpful for streamlining the process as well as staying on budget,” she says. “Sure, there are always things you’ll want to change throughout the process, but by making most of your decisions early you can focus on completing them efficiently and affordably during the renovations.”
Consider The Floorplan
Whether you are buying an investment property for long or short-term rental, ask yourself whether the floorplan is logically designed and can be changed if need be. “Questions like ‘Can I easily add another bedroom or bathroom to increase appeal and salability?’ and ‘Could this space be made to feel more open?,’ are both good places to start,” Elliott explains.
Prioritize The Kitchen
A renovated kitchen is always attractive to all types of renters. Long-term tenants appreciate the functionality and aesthetic appeal of a good kitchen, while short-term tenants, particularly in investment properties designed for families and extended stays may also desire an upgraded kitchen to make mealtimes easier.
“Kitchens are key decision factors in most real estate transactions, and renters feel the same way. If the kitchen feels dated, start by investing in upgrading appliances, tile, and countertops,” says Audrey Scheck, Founder of Audrey Scheck Design. “Crowds tend to gather in kitchens which is why they are top of mind for most of us. You’ll never go wrong investing in kitchen upgrades. They have a great return on investment, even in rental properties.”
Floorplan and light should also be considered. “Whether a kitchen has good flow, whether there’s plenty of natural light and whether there is good access to outdoor space are also good places to focus your attention. You always want to see what the existing structure can offer you; try not to overcomplicate it. Try to work with what you have by making functional and feasible improvements that make a property feel light, clean, and natural,” says Elliott.
Opt For Durable Finishes And Furniture
Choosing durable finishes and furniture is key for investment properties designed for vacation, Airbnb, VRBO, and other short-term rentals. “Get comfortable balancing between aesthetic and durability! Whether you plan on renting your property long or short term, you’ll want to design the space with a specific aesthetic in mind to attract your ideal client,” says Sheck. “Once you have a design plan in place, source pieces that can withstand wear and tear. Investment pieces should be reserved for your primary residence, and your investment property should be outfitted with pieces that are more practical.”
Go For Timeless Aesthetics
While the latest trends may attract renters in the short term – in the long term, very trendy finishes can end up looking dated. So the latest and greatest could be something you end up regretting in the years to come. “Keep it simple to avoid creating a space that’s too trendy. Adding ornate and stylistic updates can be time-consuming and fruitless. Keeping rental property remodels simple will save you time and money, and it will help you attract clients regardless of what’s in style,” says Scheck.
Consider Keeping The Original Details
Acclaimed designer Sasha Bikoff of Sasha Bikoff Interior Design tells me that keeping the original details of a property can give it an edge in today’s market. “I believe that people are really starting to have an eye for original details and unique design features that will give their property an edge,” she says. “Whether its original floors, cast-iron columns, stained glass, or fireplace mantels –anything from the past combined with new gives an investment property a certain intellectual and worldly cache.”
Focus On Updates That Take Up The Most Visual Square Footage
Whether you have a budget or are on a time crunch, Sheck suggests choosing updates that will have the most visual impact. “If you are trying to stay within a budget and want the entire space to feel elevated and cohesive, start by updating the flooring or doing a full interior repaint,” the designer explains.
She also recommends installing wallpaper. “Larger scale transformations like these tend to elevate the perception of a space because they encompass so much of what we’re visualizing regardless of which room we’re in.”
Avoid Spending Too Much Money On Decor
Montecito-based luxury interior designer and decorator Margarita Bravo believes allocating too much of your budget to decor can be the wrong decision when decorating an investment property. “If you’re looking to use the property as a rental, you want to make sure the decor is elevated but not overly expensive. You’ll need to source pieces that pop on camera without breaking the bank, in case of damages,” she says.

The Town of Telluride
is like a small urban environment living in the body of a charming alpine village. Nestled below striking vertical peaks, the magnificent valley is comprised of a quaint 16-block-long by six-block-wide grid where streets are typically a blizzard of activity. Children walk to and from school, dogs accompany owners to the bank and post office, friends bump into each other on virtually every corner, and anything can be tackled on foot or by bicycle. In Telluride, a cup of coffee and the morning paper are never more than a five-minute jaunt away; and neither is the ski resort, as two lifts and the Gondola — the innovative people-mover connecting Telluride and Mountain Village — rise up right from town. Additionally, whether one needs an ATM, wifi, a quick snack, or a birthday card, just about everything is available on, or adjacent to, Main Street, Telluride’s lively epicenter.
Telluride was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1964 and takes its architectural standards very seriously — old structures are meticulously preserved, while new construction is monitored by strict and careful guidelines. As a result, Telluride’s residential homes all share a Victorian trend that’s traditional for some, contemporary for others, and its commercial district is a colorful display of restored and recreated western storefronts. And through this thoughtfully laid out floor plan, Telluride captures the bustling energy of any city neighborhood, yet pads it in a safe and neatly packaged, friendly little town. In fact, some might even go as far as to say that the cozy Telluride valley resembles a large family as homes are lined closely together, neighbors chat across balconies, and the mountains above serve as a communal backyard enjoyed by everyone.

MOUNTAIN VILLAGE MARKET STATISTICS THROUGH QUARTER THREE
Mountain Village
is a spectacular neighborhood filled with big backyards and winding, tree-lined streets. Homes have privacy, yet are close enough together for neighbors to share the day’s events in the driveway or pass each other on a morning jog. In winter, skiers and snowboarders pull right off the slopes and up to their doorsteps, while on summer days kids toss footballs in the road without having to worry about traffic. As one of Colorado’s youngest communities, incorporated as a town and home-rule municipality in 1995, Mountain Village rests on the northern end of sunny Turkey Creek Mesa, encompassing more than 2,100 acres of forested mountainside.
Prior to earning its very own spot on the map, the town underwent a significant research, development and design phase, having been conceptualized as a ski resort village for more than a dozen years. From there, a cobblestone pedestrian plaza at the base of the ski resort became the bustling Village Core, lined with boutiques, restaurants, hotels, spas, fire pits, bouldering area and skating rink. In addition, the Village Core is home to the state-of-the-art Telluride Conference Center, Telluride Ski & Golf Company’s headquarters, the Ski & Snowboard School, three chair lifts, and the Gondola — the transportation system linking Telluride and Mountain Village together in a stunning 13-minute ride. Surrounding the core of town is the 18-hole Telluride Championship Golf Course, as well as beautiful alpine residences that abut both the golf course and ski area. Mountain Village is renowned for its panoramic vistas and elegant sophistication with new developments and amenities popping up constantly, the most recent of which includes a new grocery store, post office and several new hotels.
151 Adams Ranch Road // $6,350,000
Perched along the 8th fairway of the Telluride Golf Course, with magnificent views of the Wilson Range, you will find one of the most recognizable homes in Mountain Village. This 6-bedroom, 3.5-bath home has over 5,000 square feet of ideal entertaining space. Plenty of decks and patios allow you to take in the enchanting 360-degree-views of the entire region. Perhaps the most ideal living space in the region. The warm south- and west-facing patio and yard flow seamlessly into the 8th fairway to provide a plus-acre manicured environment for croquet, throwing a ball or frisbee, or working on your golf game! Spectacular sun and views, timeless Charles Cunniffe design and finishes.
See Forever Village Unit GL101 // $8,200,000
The newly-transformed See Forever – constructed from a blank canvas in 2017 into a single-level mountain-modern residence with private elevator access, and the largest open-air snow-melted balcony at See Forever Village. Step into this residence and experience a welcoming foyer that flows into a generous hall with limestone-lined walls, centered by Sub-Zero wine and beverage center, along with an oversized dining table tucked into the perfect spot for family gatherings. Three of the 4 bedrooms are located off this minimalist entry hall. Flowing from the entry hall to the kitchen and dining area, one is wowed by the floor-to-ceiling windows offering vertiginous views of the San Sophia Ridge. Then step outside from the living room onto the ample balcony that includes a grill center and a glass rock fire pit. This truly is a one-of-a-kind offering. A condominium that lives like a residence. Walk to it all from the private and quiet fringe of the Mountain Village core. Separate private entry, parking, storage and a corner location with views overlooking the Telluride valley floor.

Tommy Hein Architects has begun plans for a home that will float along the knoll of this lot. Picking up jaw-dropping views of San Sophia Range, with views continuing eastward above the Telluride Valley from the 20-foot-plus floor-to-ceiling windows off of the living room, master bedroom and flex areas of the home. A smaller Ski Haus will be located on Double Cabins with views looking down the ski run and westerly towards Mt. Wilson. The Ski Haus will be connected to the main home via an elevated walkway providing direct ski access to Double Cabins ski run. The sweeping entry up to the home will run along the south portion of the lot via a recorded easement with the neighboring property. Another unique aspect of this lot is one may choose to joint venture with the owner/architect of this lot, Tommy Hein, and create a custom spec home or to complete your family’s perfect mountain getaway. This lot is extremely private and is on one of the coveted cul-de-sac streets in the Mountain Village. Call for a personal walk-though of the lot or take the pathway along the lot’s south boundary, walk to Double Cabins ski run and then into the lot and up to the knoll area where the primary residence will be located. This will show the magnitude of all this lot has to offer.

The Telluride Region
has diverse areas that appeal to different types of people. The numerous mesas are about as close as one can get to living away from it all, without being away from it all. The vast expanses of sun-kissed stretches of land sit at the base of the area’s most dramatic peaks, meaning days are longer and views seem no more than an arm’s length away. Wildlife roams freely and property lines reach out to mingle among wilderness areas and national forests, suiting equestrians as well as those who love their space. Yet once in the car, all the mesas are less than 40 minutes from Telluride and Mountain Village, with certain 35-acre tracts uniquely positioned only 10 minutes away from the action.
Then there are the numerous outlying towns, which boast community living that’s a little quieter than Telluride and Mountain Village. Heading south, residents actually go up in altitude to the old mining/mountain communities of Ophir, San Bernardo, Trout Lake and Rico, where neighbors live close to each other and to the mountains outside their doors. Heading north and west, residents go down to the slightly warmer and more agricultural towns of Placerville, Ridgway and Norwood, where homesteads come in all sizes and communities have social calendars all their own. And like the mesas, all the outlying communities are no more than 20 to 40 minutes from Telluride and Mountain Village.

The property includes two stand-alone guest cottages on property as well as deeded underground parking and storage in the heart of Mountain Village for convenient access to world-class skiing, the gondola and restaurants.

All 4 bedrooms with ensuite baths occupy the main level, with the master suite occupying its own wing inclusive of a workout room, steam shower, fireplace and private patio. Remodeled in 2019, all finishes are upscale and blend perfectly with the rustic barn’s posts and beams.
