News in brief:

If you have any queries about accessing ESR please contact: workforce.information@sash.nhs.uk with the subject heading as MY ESR.

Remember revalidation

Following changes that came into effect last year all nurses and midwives now need to revalidate every three years to maintain their registration with the NMC. Revalidation is straightforward and helps nurses and midwives to demonstrate that they practise safely and effectively and also promotes good practice across all nurses and midwives.

Staff Friends and Family Test The first Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust Staff Friends and Family Test, for this financial year, is now open.

A reminder to SASH nurses and midwives, if you are due to revalidate, to check the revalidation information on the Intranet or visit: www.nmc.org.uk/nmc-online

Along with all other Trusts in England, staff are asked to answer two questions about your likelihood to recommend SASH as a place to work and as a place to receive treatment. There is also an opportunity to comment on why you have answered the way you have.

If you have any questions please contact: Teresa Dale, practice development nurse at: teresa.dale@sash.nhs.uk

Payslips

Please take a couple of minutes to complete the survey which will be open from 8 May to 5 June 2017 (9am).

Electronic payslips for substantive staff have now replaced the traditional paper versions. You can view your payslip through Employee Staff Record (ESR) self-service; you can also view and update personal information such as your home address, phone contacts and bank details.

Take this opportunity to offer constructive comments or suggestions on how you feel things could be improved – if you don’t raise it, we can’t review it. But please make sure your suggestions do not include staff names or personal criticisms.

SASH bank staff will continue to receive a paper payslip till May 2017.

Complete the survey here: https://web.capitasurveys.co.uk/SSHFFT/

Visit the payroll and workforce section of the Intranet for full details on how to create your ESR user access and password.

Up, up and away with Victoria Daley

When Victoria Daley, deputy chief nurse, is not at work she can regularly be seen floating across the sky on Cloud Nine her hot air ballon.

Victoria recently took part in a Guinness Book of World Records attempt to fly in in hot air balloon from Lydden Hill Race Circuit near Dover (along with eighty two other hot air balloons across the English channel in the direction of Calais).

variety of settings both in England and abroad but by far the cross channel flight has been the best.”

Victoria, who is a trainee hot air balloon pilot in her spare time and has been flying balloons since 2015 said: “It was a truly amazing flight in perfect weather conditions.

The journey took 2 hours 15 minutes and Victoria who flew in Cloud Nine with co team member and pilot Tom Hilditch arrived safely in a field near to Peuplingues, south west of Calais, France.

“The balloon teams came from ten different countries and to have the privilege of flying in ours with so many others across the channel to France was incredible. I have flown in a

Theatre recovery team help young patients The recovery team have made some changes to make the young patient journey less scary. Valerie Rada who is a sister in recovery said: “We go to the children’s ward daily and meet the young patient and their family prior to surgery and let them know we will be there when they wake up. We tell them that they can have an ice lolly once they are awake and give the children bravery certificates and stickers. We are trying to demystify any worries and let them know they are safe and being well cared for.”

The theatre recovery team (above) at East Surrey Hospital know that surgery can be a stressful time for adults and even more so for children, so they are using a new way of working to improve the care and experience of young patients coming for surgical procedures.

The theatres recovery team also have aspirations to make even more improvements in the future. Lorna, who joined Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH) in 2015, said: “We are adding wall and ceiling stickers so when children are being anaesthatised they have something fun and interesting to focus on. We are also really keen to be able buy a little vehicle for young patients to drive themselves to theatres in and hope that together we can help children know they are safe and being well cared for.”

Lorna Anderson, theatres recovery manager and her team put their heads together to find new ways to help improve the experience of young patients waking up in theatre recovery: “As you can imagine it is very frightening waking up after surgery in an unfamiliar environment, surrounded by people you have never met before.” 5

Marathon fundraising effort for SASH Charity Both the Brighton and London Marathons took place in April and two generous runners completed the marathons for our SASH Charity. Brighton Marathon: 8 April Local business man, Mark Southam, laced up his trainers and completed the gruelling 26 miles 385 yard Brighton Marathon, which took place on 9 April (the hottest day of the year, so far). He successfully raised over £700 for SASH Charity and the chemotherapy team in thanks for the care and support they have given to two of his close friends. Pictured above: Nikki celebrates at the finishing line

Mark, who ran the London Marathon, his first marathon, last year and has set himself the challenge of completing three marathons before his 40th birthday in November next year, said: “I am keen to help benefit a local charity and SASH Charity, is the perfect fit as it is both my local hospital and also a place my friends cannot speak highly enough about for the help and support they have received from the chemotherapy team. It is my thank you for them.”

London marathon: 23 April Nikki Tapal, phlebotomy supervisor at East Surrey Hospital, completed two ambitions by crossing the finish line of the London Marathon and raising nearly £1,200 for SASH Charity. Nikki, who has worked at the hospital for 13 years, completed the 26 miles and 385 yards distance in five hours, nine minutes and 41seconds on 23 April (2017).

Jane Penny, lead cancer nurse, said: “A big thank you to Mark for taking on such a marathon challenge. The money raised will be used to buy new specialist trolleys, which are more compact than the existing trolleys and designed to store all the chemotherapy essentials inside - meaning that everything needed for the session is in one place.”

Nikki said: “SASH Charity is very close to my heart both for the brilliant care close friends have received at East Surrey Hospital and through my job where I see and treat many patients during their time at SASH. “I have been very lucky to have been given the opportunity to run the London Marathon and fulfil my lifelong ambition. It was an amazing day and my thanks go to everyone who has kindly sponsored me. “SASH Charity does so much unsung work, so my mission is to raise awareness about the benefit it makes to the daily experience of patients. It was worth going through the pain barrier for.” Our thanks go to Mark and Nikki for their generosity and support.

SASH nurses inspire the next generation SASH nurses have been inspiring the next generation of NHS recruits through a visit to Sackville College, East Grinstead. Doug Barnes, Rebecca Phelan and Claire Rowley spoke about the routes into nursing for students studying a BTEC Level Three in Health and Social Care.

Helen Valentine, head of health and social care and deputy head of sixth form at Sackville College said: “We consider ourselves very fortunate to have had the benefit of their expertise - in addition to giving us help with our BTEC HSC coursework they gave us a real insight into the daily life of a practising nurse.

Students showed a keen interest in apprenticeships, one saying: “I am delighted that my BTEC in Health and Social Care will help me find a route into the nursing profession. I now feel I can realise my aim and train to be a nurse. I thought I had to go to university.”

“Most importantly, they have inspired some of my students to pursue their aim and train to be nurses. Thank you to Claire who has told us about the nursing apprenticeship scheme she will be hearing more from us.”

Claire Rowley, lead nurse for critical care outreach, said: “We did two practical sessions, where the students, armed with some nursing props, had to think about what nurses do in a given scenario. We then followed a very ill patient’s journey from 999 call, through the emergency department and into intensive care unit, discussing the different members of the multi-disciplinary team, and what roles they play in the patients care.”

Insight hears from the children’s safeguarding team The Safeguarding children team are, Dr Katherine McGlone, named doctor for safeguarding children, Vicky Abbott and Sally Stimpson named nurses for safeguarding children and Laura Lewis safeguarding children administrator. Sally said: “Child abuse is any form of maltreatment of a child; inflicting harm, causing injury and/or death. This includes failing to act to prevent harm or being complicit in the harming of a child under the age of 18 years, including unborn babies.“There are all kinds of abuse, sexual, physical, emotional (including witnessing others being abused e.g. domestic abuse and neglect). This also includes bullying, cyber-bullying, child sexual exploitation and female genital mutilation (FGM).” We are all responsible for the safeguarding of children The safeguarding children team are based on the children’s assessment unit on the first floor by the East entrance at East Surrey Hospital and they welcome anyone to come in for advice and support with safeguarding children concerns.
