Your Voice in Business Happy New Year! In 2019, we are looking ahead to a successful year full of advocacy, events and connection with our members.
Advocacy
To build the right framework we want to begin with our members. By understanding what matters most to members, we can develop policy positions on key priorities that will contribute to growing our economy and building the best business climate in Canada.
Darla Lindbjerg, CEO Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce
For more on the Summit, check out the ‘Working for You’ portion of this publication on page 21. We are now in the process of summarizing our findings from the Chamber Summit and will use this information to inform our policy and advocacy work going forward. I would like to thank all of our members that engaged in this process as it was a huge success!

Connection
We are focusing on putting tools in place so that our members have the opportunity to engage with us more easily. As part of our plan to connect with our members and enhance our toolkit, we are launching a new website in Q1 of 2019! Our website will focus on: • Communicating the benefits of Chamber membership. • Offering a job portal to our members. • Creation of a member-to-member marketplace. • Giving our members an easy and centralized way of submitting and promoting local success stories. • Creating a centralized hub for storing and communicating business information and Chamber resources. • Access to a member-only portal. • Ease of use to explore and engage in our upcoming events. • Engaging our members around public policy topics and work we do on these files. • And opening doors for opportunities that exist within and through the Chamber.
“
“
The first step has recently been undertaken when we brought our members together for the annual Chamber Summit. Eight sector roundtables were convened with representatives from our diverse membership to discuss and communicate the issues that matter most.
Image: Gina’s Portraits
The Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce represents the voice of business. We advocate on behalf of our members at the local, provincial and federal levels, ensuring that the issues concerning business are raised and heard. In line with our new five-year Strategic Plan, we are embarking on a new way of engaging our members to ensure that we have the right strategy for meaningful and impactful advocacy.
We know that events are a way for our members to connect with each other, learn valuable skills and grow their businesses. Because of this, we are working on a line-up of over forty-five events for 2019. We are working to create a diversified and relevant event stream that will offer value to you as a member, regardless of what size you are or sector you work in. Stay tuned!
The Chamber was formed by business for business and we are ultimately here to ensure our business community is successful so that we can have a thriving and vibrant community. We look forward to engaging with you this year to make 2019 an amazing year for businesses in Saskatoon!

Australian Medical Sheepskin
Green Medical sheepskin was implemented as a medical standard for the prevention of bed sores in Australia in 1998. Many people suffer from this problem, but hip replacements are one of the major causes in surgery due to shearing and moisture build/up on the skin. The hollow wool fibers and leather wick away moisture keeping skin dry and healthy. Many thousands of fibers reduce pressure on the bony prominences, while hollow fibers maintain body temperature through natural insulation, maximizing blood flow to the skin tissue. It is a game changer for home, long term and acute care. Cost savings to the health systems is staggering. (306) 934-7119 www.australianmedicalsheepskins.com

BRAINSPORT A COMMUNITY HUB FOR SASKATOON RUNNERS by Elizabeth Ireland
14 BUSINESSVOICE SASKATOON JULY / AUGUST 2018
Image: Gina’s Portraits BUSINESSVOICE SASKATOON JULY / AUGUST 2018 15
Brainsport has been in business for 27 years and at its current location – right off Broadway Avenue – for the past four years. The business is a long-time member of the Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce. Michasiw points out interesting features of the historical lumberyard building where the store is located and that are unique to the architecture of the space. These include the A-frames for storing lumber that have been repurposed to display shoes and salvaged high school gymnasium flooring. Michasiw describes Brainsport as “51 percent shoe store and 49 percent running store” all under the umbrella of achieving a healthy, active lifestyle. The store has 16 staff members, including his nephew Matthew. Michasiw has three children of his own and actually met his wife at Brainsport’s Wednesday night running club.

Brainsport has won several SABEX (Saskatoon Achievement in Business Excellence) awards, including Business of the Year twice, as well as awards for Community Involvement and Marketing. Michasiw has also served as a mentor for businesses nominated for

a SABEX award for the first time and to help guide them through the application process.
Winning a SABEX award gives a business credibility and shows consistency. That’s important for customers and other stakeholders in our business. At Brainsport, we want to convince you everyday that we stand for something and a SABEX award reinforces that dedication. Brian Michasiw, Brainsport
“
Imagine predicting an aspect of your future when you’re 12 years old. Brian Michasiw – the owner of the Saskatoon store Brainsport – did just that in a handwritten letter for a time capsule in 1982. When the time capsule was unearthed years later, Michasiw discovered that he had written about athletic shoe brands that are still popular today and that he carries at Brainsport.

COVE R STORY
He has a few pieces of advice for new business owners. “Have an elevator pitch ready – for Brainsport that’s 'Shoes That Fit.' Also, don’t make assumptions about the market or your customers. One of the dangers of being a business owner is becoming like a fish in a fishbowl or drinking your own Kool-Aid. Outside factors such as weather and location can always have an influence on your business.” How does the macroeconomic climate impact a running store? “When people are stressed, people run so that will always be a positive for our business,” explains Michasiw. Drew Wakefield is a dedicated Brainsport customer who also lives in the neighbourhood. “I’m an avid runner, sun or snow, so I’m always looking for good-quality shoes that suit my needs. I also have growing active kids who constantly need new gear. Not only is it important to me to support local businesses like Brainsport, but

Each November Brainsport holds its own fundraising fun run called the Ginger Bread Run. Michasiw and some friends conceived the idea for the Ginger Bread Run “over tequila at Las Palapas.” The event draws 400 participants to either a 5K or 10K run and registration typically fills up very quickly. “We thought it was a natural theme for a fun run. As in – Run, run as fast as you can, you’ll never catch me, I’m the ginger bread man,” says Michasiw. The Ginger Bread Run benefits SaskAbilities – a registered charity dedicated to providing programs and services to people experiencing disability in Saskatchewan. SaskAbilities have served community members since 1950 and the store’s relationship with SaskAbilities is something that Michasiw values.
I find they are passionate about their business and our community. They are much more knowledgeable in their products and that helps me to find what I’m looking for,” says Wakefield.
Michasiw and his team are also conscious of the issue of accessibility with the products they sell. Brainsport is the only Canadian store to carry BILLY Footwear. Fairly new on the scene, the brand focuses on shoes that incorporate universal design, meaning the shoes can work for everyone.
While Brainsport carries everything for the running and swimming portions of training for a triathlon, the store does not sell bicycles. This connects to Michasiw’s philosophy of sticking with what you know and expanding without diluting the strengths of your business. He observes: “When customers complain about service it tends to indicate a gap between the standard of service they receive versus their expectations coming into a store.”
BILLY Footwear uses zippers that go along the side of the shoes and around the toe, allowing the wearer to place his or her foot onto the footbed unobstructed. The concept makes putting on shoes a lot easier for children and those living with disabilities, plus the shoes look great.
“
Image: Gina’s Portraits
For example, organizations around the city put on “fun” runs (versus competitive timed races). There is an unwritten fun run rule to contact a local running store to be involved. This partnership leads fun run registrants to picking up a race package at Brainsport. Which, in turn, provides an opportunity to walk through the store and see all the great products on display.
Finally, what might people not know about fitting shoes?
We fall somewhere between hairstylists and bartenders in terms of the personal things that people tell us. Our staff are really good listeners.
“
“No store can be everything to everybody. For us at Brainsport, we aim to create an open and inviting environment for all people who love to run, walk and live a healthy lifestyle. I think a lot of the future of brick and mortar stores lies in creating a sense of community and connection.”
“We’re dedicated to helping you find the most comfortable shoe you’ll ever find – whether you’re training for a marathon or taking your grandchildren to Disney World. We want our customers to get away from the shoe wall and a specific brand to focus on the shoe that will be a match with their feet. Finding the right show can be like solving a puzzle.”

Meet Kendra Cruson, Vice President of Operations
Image: Gina’s Portraits
After leaving the farm, Kendra went to work for her would-be husband’s family business, Dutch Industries Ltd. Through the 90’s, she simultaneously worked full-time, raised two kids and attended four years of night school. Looking back Kendra remembers coming home from work, making supper, grabbing a 20-minute nap and heading back to Regina (they lived on a farm near Balgonie at the time) for a three-hour class twice a week. Full on go.
What do you really know about your Chamber’s Vice President of Operations? Likely that she loves travel and adventure and is the Chamber Trip group leader. But how does one get to going? If you ask Kendra’s mom, she would tell you she was born with “GO” written on her forehead. A badge still proudly worn! Going back in time, Kendra recalls, “we were not rich but we had what we needed.” Kendra thinks fondly of growing up on the farm. It built character and terrific work ethic. Animals needed to be fed, eggs collected, grain planted and harvested along with food preparation for the winter, including butchering and preserving. Kendra smiles as she reminisces about stuffing jars with cucumbers, perhaps adding an extra toe or six of garlic, or watching her great aunties stretching out dough on the backs of their hands to make paper thin layers for strudel. She recalls how her family would just go to the neighbours for a spontaneous visit, void of electronic schedule checking and hours of preparation and planning, a tradition she believes has died with her generation.
Since then, Kendra has owned a furniture store on 13th Avenue in Regina (until 2012), travelled to 23 countries in one year (24 if you count the stopover in UAE) during her mini retirement and then, while working full-time for an Ag finance start-up, she achieved an MBA in Executive Management from the University of Regina. Her MBA connections had her on the GO again, this time to the Chamber in Saskatoon. Kendra loves her work at the Chamber, especially connecting with business owners. “They have rich experiences to share but often need to be reminded of how much they have
accomplished. I love to share how valuable applying for a SABEX award can be for their business, it highlights and brings to light all at the same and is a big step towards going to the next level.” Kendra is a strong proponent of organization advancement with methods of continuous improvement along with consistent communication and a healthy dose of fearlessness. With a strong theme of going, Kendra wants to remind, “While it is fun to be on the go, take some time to just stop by.” For Kendra, taking time to stop happens by heading north to the family fishing cabin, getting off the grid (literally) and eating fresh fish for all three meals a day.
The Dirt What’s something people might not know about you? I can have an apple pie from scratch oven ready in less than 20 minutes. What’s your dream job? I would be a buyer for the fashion/decor retailer, Anthropologie, travelling the globe and sourcing exquisite products to share with lovers of curious goods across the land! Favourite virtue? Forgiveness. Favourite quality in a man? Generosity. Favorite quality in a woman? Vulnerability. What do you most appreciate in your friends? That they listen well and call me out when I need it! What is your idea of happiness? Being close to nature. What do you consider your chief characteristic? Honesty.

Indigenous Business Forum Panel: Kevin Michael, First Nations Bank of Canada, Joel Pederesen, Fitness 2J2, Sean Willy, Des Nedhe Developments Indigenous Business Forum Moderator: Gilles Dorval, City of Saskatoon The first step was bringing our members together for the inaugural Chamber SUMMIT. In November, eight sector roundtables were held throughout the day to allow members to convene and discuss the issues that matter most. All sessions were well attended and the roundtable format provided a useful and valuable forum for members to discuss a wide variety of issues most prevalent within their sectors. In addition to the roundtables, the Chamber hosted two other important events

The Saskatoon Chamber would like to thank all the members who took time out of their busy schedules to participate in the inaugural Chamber Summit. The event was well attended and members provided valuable insight regarding key advocacy priorities. Thank you to our sponsors who made the day possible, including our title luncheon sponsor, the University of Saskatchewan; and title breakfast sponsor, Creative Fire. We would like to thank the Advocacy Committee for their efforts in organizing the event and acknowledge the Radisson Hotel and RBC for their assistance and support. In line with our 2018-2023 Strategic Plan, we have embarked on a new way of engaging our members to ensure that we have the right strategy for meaningful and impactful advocacy. To build the right framework, we wanted to begin with our members. By understanding what matters most to members, we can focus on developing key policy positions on priorities that will contribute to growing our economy and building the best business climate in Canada.

during the day. We held our first Indigenous Business Forum over breakfast, featuring a diverse panel of Indigenous business leaders who provided their perspectives on current success and future growth. Panel members included Sean Willy, President and CEO of Des Nedhe Developments; Joel Pedersen, CEO and founder of Fitness 2J2; and Kevin Michael, VP Commercial Banking at First Nations Bank of Canada. The panel was moderated by Gilles Dorval, Director of Aboriginal Relations with the City of Saskatoon. A second feature event was the Summit Luncheon. Valerie Chort, VP Corporate Citizenship at RBC, provided the keynote presentation on the future of work in the age of disruption. Ms. Chort discussed key findings from a report recently published by RBC entitled Humans Wanted, providing insight on the coming skills revolution and how businesses can prepare for this shift. Based on the information collected throughout the Summit proceedings, we are now finalizing our 2019 Advocacy plan and look forward to circulating this plan to members in the new year.

Child Find
If you’re a parent, you’ve most likely had the gut wrenching experience of temporarily losing your child in a mall or at a playground. Panic sets in and you pray that your worst nightmare has not come true. Parents suffering the loss of a missing child know that feeling of panic, not for a minute or two, but for days. Then those days turn into weeks, then into months and then years. The pain is relentless. For 34 years, Child Find has worked to support searching families navigate this horrific minefield. We have seen mothers pull out their own hair or vomit until they have lost their voice. They are so driven in searching for their child that they fail to seek help for themselves. Still through the agonizing pain, they continue their search because they have that one thing. Hope. They believe they will be reunited with their child or at the very least find answers. We have seen this hope become a reality. Jonah Kent, abducted at age 2, found after 17 years. And recently, Jermaine Mann, located after 31 years, was reunited with his family. This is why we never give up. There is always hope. For more information on Child Find and our programs and services, visit www. childfind.sk.ca

OUTSaskatoon If you have ever stood on a downtown street as the Saskatoon Pride Parade roared by or heard about how life-affirming GSAs are for young people, then you have had front-row seats to the value of supporting the LGBTQ2S community. OUTSaskatoon is a community centre that supports LGBTQ2S people year-round, and we proudly celebrate the strengths of our community at the same time that we acknowledge the barriers that still exist. Experiences of exclusion and isolation continue to be the most common stories that we hear from people of all ages, and every story reminds us that we are hardwired for connection and belonging, no matter who we are. Throughout our 27 years of operation, we have discovered that the greatest long-term impact that we can have on health and well-being is through
enabling strong support systems, providing access to community resources, and through having opportunities to express oneself freely as both Pride and GSAs enable people to do. OUTSaskatoon’s drop-in centre, counseling and support groups, and many community events offer just that support, while our professional development and education program connects us with local businesses and schools across the city, and Pride Home—our group home for LGBTQ2S youth ages 16-21—provides a place for LGBTQ2S youth to grow up in a safe and supportive home. Through these building blocks, OUTSaskatoon provides the sturdy foundation that is needed for LGBTQ2S people of all ages to reach their potential and to help build a vibrant local community.

Scheduling Joel Pedersen for an interview involves catching him between his many athletic activities. Business Voice met up with Pedersen just before his Learn to Run youth group at St. Mary's Wellness & Education Centre began. It was hectic with the young athletes arriving for their indoor run, but also a terrific insight into Pedersen’s positive, communityminded philosophy.
A member of Fond Du Lac Denesuline First Nation, Pedersen was born in Saskatoon and spent his high school years in Prince Albert. His father was an editorial writer for newspapers such as the Saskatoon StarPhoenix and the Brandon Sun. His mother was also a writer and a journalist, writing with the Prince Albert Daily Herald. At the age of 17, Pedersen joined the Army Reserves and after a couple of years service, he deployed to the Middle East in a United Nations peacekeeping mission during the end of the First Gulf War. He was then a member of the Saskatoon Police Service for 25 years before retiring as a Sergeant. Pedersen remains a Regimental Sergeant Major and Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) with the military. CWO is the most senior non-commission officer rank in the Canadian Armed Forces. “My time in the army, and then as a police officer, provided so much opportunity for me and opened so many doors. It was a great starting-off point. I’ve had several mentors throughout my military and policing careers, and now as an entrepreneur I value the mentorship I receive from other Saskatoon business owners.”
Pedersen is passionate about contributing to the success and vitality of Saskatchewan’s communities – whether that’s a core neighbourhood in Saskatoon or a more isolated northern community. His goal is to promote healthy and positive lifestyles for Indigenous people of all ages and abilities. The sports of hockey and soccer remain Pedersen’s personal favourites, but his company has run skills camps for everything from rugby to triathlons. “Even before I retired from the Saskatoon Police Service, I asked myself ‘what do I enjoy doing?’ The answer always came back to physical activity, leadership and community involvement. Founding Fitness 2J2 during that transition time was a combination of these things and because I’d already had a career, I was able to fund myself and reinvest in the business.”
“
I received the valuable advice early-on that if I wanted Fitness 2J2 to grow, the business could not just be my hobby. It had to be a full-time commitment.
“
In business for seven years, Fitness 2J2 is a socially responsible community-based health and wellness company with the slogan “strong, healthy, proud.” As the company’s founder and CEO, Pedersen focuses his business on professional Indigenous fitness instruction and consulting. He is also a health and sports columnist for Eagle Feather News.

Fitness 2J2 has been providing functional fitness programming since its inception. Functional fitness is known for preparing participants for real life (rather than something specific like one race or competition). Pedersen’s holistic fitness programs cater to private clients, small groups or corporate sessions. His 10 parttime employees are able to provide fitness programs for all ages and all abilities.
One of the programs Fitness 2J2 offers is beginner Aikido and Jujitsu-based self-defence and safety awareness for women and youth. With no cost to participate, these programs are empowering while inspiring women and youth to pursue healthy lifestyles. Pedersen is also a motivational speaker.
“
Overall, at Fitness 2J2 we work to break down systemic barriers to health and f itness – whether that’s cost or living in a core neighbourhood. It’s great to feel and to be a part of something and physical activity and sports provide that.
“
Joel Pedersen, Fitness 2J2
Pedersen considers his membership with the Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce as “an investment” and looks forward to continuing to partner with other Saskatoon-based businesses on community initiatives.

HEALTH & WELLLNESS
The Uselessness of Envy by Kendra Cruson
Is it a flaw with the human condition that we so easily covet that of which is our neighbours? That so frequently we allow ourselves to believe that other people are living our perfect life? For me personally, Anthony Bourdain occupied the most perfect life. He truly knew what it meant to ‘go.’ He travelled to amazing destinations worldwide, connected with people from
every culture, and ate amazing food - for work. He was just plain cool. At face value, an enviable position. But clearly there was more at play than what could be gleaned from an outward impression. While the romantic notion of fame and fortune, is, well, romantic, it is severely short on data. Should one take the time to examine the data on Anthony’s life, it would suggest that he was incredibly lonely, bringing truth to the old adages of “lonely at the top” and “money cannot buy happiness.” As a business community we know and understand this. The more “success” we achieve, the more responsibility
we bear, and the fewer people we can relate to. And the more people want to be just like you. And so it goes. So what? Next time you are feeling green because of another's accomplishments - back that bus right on up and change your mind. Remember that your longing aroused by someone else’s position or possession has an entire back room of things you have not seen or considered. Set yourself a challenge to channel the energy wasted on envy into your own health and wellness regime. Over-indulge less, get more sleep, invest in relationships and give yourself a break. Set and write down your S.M.A.R.T. goals and get on with it. If you find yourself having a hard time, reach out to professional for help; your family doctor is a good start. Together we got this! COMMUNITY
The Saskatoon Downtown Youth Centre Inc. /EGADZ The Saskatoon Downtown Youth Centre/ EGADZ opened its doors April 1, 1990. The youth centre was supposed to be a place for young people to hang out away from the downtown. Since then EGADZ has become a larger staple in our community providing services and assistance to some of our most vulnerable population in Saskatoon. From a Drop in Centre, we now have become one of the largest youth serving agencies in our province. EGADZ believes every person deserves the opportunity to become a contributing citizen. We believe that individuals must have hope and skills to ensure personal success in their own lives. Through our Drop in Centre, Street Outreach, Operation Help, School and Day Programs, Operation Runaway, Action to Employment, My Homes, Sweet Dreams Early Learning Centre, to our specialized housing for mothers and children, the focus remains on assisting their personal journeys in positive ways to ensure there are options
for a better life. We are proud to be community leaders and innovators providing assistance that is based on a plan created by the clients we serve. We look for outcomes that will not only benefit the client, but the community at large. Our youth have a say in what programming they need as well an opportunity to give back through our Random Acts of Kindness, Action to Employment, as well as mentoring each other for success. The health and wellness of a community begins with the people living there. For the past 28 years we have faced many challenges as well as rewards in helping to create contributing citizens. When you see our young people out in the community giving back, attending school, parenting their children, we know we are a journey that continues to put a lasting mark on a city we all love to call home.

Red Cross introduces Psychological First Aid training How do you tourniquet depression? What are the compression rates for anxiety? Where do you place a splint for workplace stress? Psychological First Aid training, a new initiative from the Canadian Red Cross, addresses the invisible health concerns that require the same care and attention as physical injuries like broken bones and cardiac arrest. The training begins with a mental health self-assessment and the creation of a selfcare plan to build resiliency and balance. Equipped with a deeper understanding of their own mental health issues, students are then ready to learn how to respond to a mental health crisis. The Psychological First Aid responder has a simple but effective tool belt at hand: Look, Listen, Link, Live. 1. Look for signs of stress, anxiety, and
exhaustion. 2. Listen actively when someone discloses their feelings of distress. 3. Link the person in crisis to resources in the community. Psychological first aid is just the first step. Healing mental health issues can be a lengthy process, and a responder needs to provide good links so that a person in distress can get the help they need. 4. Live a healthy, balanced life, and be alert for signs of stress. Available online at redcross.ca and through Canadian Red Cross training partners across

Here we are – the start of another year! What better time to reflect on our own health and wellness. As entrepreneurs, business owners and business leaders, we all know the adrenaline rush associated with owning and leading a business. The call of business is typically felt by individuals who have ideas, immense reserves of energy, a thirst for independence, and a desire to grow something. These traits make us successful in business. However, running a business has a dark side that is not talked about – the impact of owning and operating a business on the health of business owners and leaders. There are many benefits to being your own boss but studies show that the demand of business ownership places people at a higher risk for specific mental health problems. The lifestyle can wreak havoc on our psychological well-being. Many entrepreneurs work such long hours that they're not able to take care of themselves. The "time is money" mentality means less time is devoted to sleep, leisure, exercise, and other activities that ward off health issues. Every business owner wants to ensure their business is a success and this can mean putting in the extra hours from time to time. But consistently working long hours and managing an excessive workload can take a toll on our physical and mental health, reduce resilience, and potentially have a negative effect on business performance. Stress often creeps up on us until it gets our attention by manifesting itself as physical and mental symptoms that affect our health. Mental health is now seen as a major issue that small business owners are dealing with in silence. Several years ago, Psychology Today tagged cortisol, the stress hormone, as public enemy number one. Exposure to cortisol on an ongoing basis has a detrimental impact
