Your Voice in Business In our new off ice space, we are surrounded by signs of progress and growth in all directions. From the
Over the past eighteen months, transformation has been the focus, and although it isn’t easy to either implement or sometimes accept walking down a new or different road, it is how progress is made. Some of the areas our organization has undergone a transformation include: • Focusing on strategy – the Chamber’s Board of Directors built a new five year strategic plan earlier this year. This strategy is what has and will continue driving transformation in our organization. • Positioning our team to succeed – although we are no larger of a team than when I first arrived, our team is now composed of many different skillsets that both deepen our ability to build value for our members and align with our strategic plan. • Addressing our organization’s technology needs – we were facing a challenge with technology over a decade old when I came into the role. This technology has now been brought up to standard to ensure continuity for our members and ensure our staff are able to work effectively and efficiently. • Aligning our physical space with our brand and needs – as many of you are aware, our physical office space location has changed. The Chamber previously housed nine staff into a tight 1,000 square feet which was outdated and not aligned with our brand. We now have space to accommodate our staff adequately and the ability to offer meeting space to our members who wish to utilize it. • Connecting with the community – we currently offer many networking and educational events to the community, however our strategic plan has ensured that our engagement efforts and channels with our members will deepen even more. One of the ways we plan to do this is by hosting an annual Membership Summit to connect with our members and collect feedback surrounding areas they feel are impactful, both positive and negative, to their businesses. From the feedback and insight from our members, our Board of Directors will use this information to help inform their policy and advocacy positions to ensure the Chamber is affecting positive change for businesses in our community. • Realignment of our volunteer structure with our strategic plan – eighteen months ago, the organization had fifteen committees, today we have eight. During the development of our new strategic plan, those committees weighed in on their perspectives of the current volunteer structure and their desire to support the

River Landing development to the opening of new bridges, there is a tangible and visual representation of this positive movement and it is obvious that we are in the midst of an exciting and energizing time as a city. At the Chamber, we are feeling that same excitement internally as well, as we transform into a new and fresh organization that is positioning itself to meet the needs of our business community. The vibe amongst our staff and volunteers is electric and contagious!

Based on that feedback, the Board of Directors restructured the Chamber’s committees to align with the strategic plan so that there are more ways for our membership to engage with the organization in the future. • Assessing our event offerings – we are continually assessing events that we are offering to our members to ensure that they are valuable and relevant as well as ensuring they align with our mandate and brand. As part of this assessment, there were some networking events that the Chamber had founded that we are now proud to say have found new homes with amazing organizations that are breathing new life into them. A couple of these events are Shaken With A Twist and H.O.T. We continue to offer our signature networking event, Chamber on Tap at LB Distillers monthly and are looking to ensure that our events going forward meet our member’s needs.

Presidents, prime ministers and premiers are often measured by their f irst 100 days in off ice. For the Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce’s President and CEO, Darla Lindbjerg, her f irst three months in off ice meant “blowing through” 500 business cards as she met with various stakeholders across the city.
husband Halden is a former professional hockey player and business owner. He has been an avid supporter of Lindbjerg’s career and journey into this role and currently homeschools their three children from their house in the Lakeview neighbourhood of Saskatoon.
Lindbjerg is the first female CEO in the Chamber’s 115-year history but she points out what has stayed the same in those 115 years. Mainly, the Chamber’s role as a champion and advocate for the largest business community in Saskatchewan.
Lindbjerg entered her role as CEO with the Chamber as an entrepreneurial-minded executive with a background in economic development, finance and governance. She believes the key to the Chamber’s success is understanding and sharing Saskatoon’s value proposition with the rest of Canada and the world.
“The Chamber opened in 1903, as the Saskatoon Board of Trade, to support business owners concerned about access to ferries crossing the South Saskatchewan River. Today we still think about the best way to develop our city and our infrastructure around the river, whether that’s office buildings or a downtown stadium. The river is always there and it’s a big part of what makes Saskatoon so beautiful.” Lindbjerg grew up in southwest Saskatchewan on a farm with three younger brothers and one younger sister. Her parents still farm there today. She completed her undergraduate degrees and an Executive MBA at the University of Regina. “For five years I regularly drove back and forth between Swift Current and Regina on Highway 1. People like to tease that I should have hitched a ride with (former premier) Brad Wall.”

These days Lindbjerg is the mother of three children of her own – two girls and a boy ranging in ages from eight to fourteen. Her

Interestingly, one of the hot topics in the community when Lindbjerg began her CEO position was bike lanes. “First, we polled our membership to identify if this was even an issue for downtown businesses. What we found was that it was not. However, I realized that if I was going to speak to this topic, it was important for me to clarify the bike issue in my own mind and through experience. As a result, in the good weather my husband and I began biking to work. That’s over 8 km each way. The benefit of this approach was that we found it’s a great way for us to form a connection as a couple. We call it our morning date.”
She describes Saskatoon as a city that “punches above its weight class.” Centres of excellence in agriculture, mining, technology, research, innovation and many more serve to further reinforce this positive impression of Saskatoon. “When I started at the Chamber 18 months ago, there was a lot of change taking place in Saskatoon. The city had elected Charlie Clark as a new mayor after Don Atchison was mayor for 13 years. My predecessor at the Chamber was Kent Smith-Windsor and Kent was in the role for 21 years. It was turning a new leaf of sorts and not a bad thing. However, it was definitely a change for Saskatoon’s business community to absorb and a chance for new perspectives.” She credits Smith-Windsor’s tireless work on property taxes during his time as the Chamber’s Executive Director for “creating the best tax environment for businesses in Canada when comparing all large cities across our country.” Another asset that Lindbjerg acknowledges was in place during her first year in the role, was the leadership of the Chamber’s Board Chair at-the-time Kelly Bode. The Chamber’s Board of Directors consists of 14 people and each Board Chair serves for one year. Bode is a corporate commercial and securities lawyer, a partner at the Saskatoon law firm WMCZ Lawyers and the mother of a young daughter. As incoming CEO, Lindbjerg says she appreciated Bode’s “backbone, empathy, quirky sense of humour and her ability to be 100 per cent present.” Lindbjerg feels strongly about the Chamber’s role as an advocate for its members with municipal, provincial and federal governments.
For a small business, anonymity is your friend. The Chamber provides that level of protection in dealing directly with government on specific issues. We also have an extensive Chamber network that stretches across our country working towards similar goals that we can work with and pull from.

Other changes during Lindbjerg’s first 18 months included some shift in the make-up of the Chamber’s staff, with more of an emphasis on its advocacy role. As well, the Chamber has relocated to stunning new offices at the corner of 19th Street and 4th Avenue South. Anyone who visited the Chamber’s previous offices will remember the space was not dissimilar to a rabbit’s warren. In addition, Lindbjerg and her team worked to streamline the five monthly networking events that the Chamber was hosting at the time down to just one key networking event. For this reason, Chamber on Tap is now its flagship monthly networking event.

Halden and Darla Lindbjerg While hosting or co-hosting multiple events got the Chamber’s name out, it sometimes diluted its focus. “Our goal now is to have the Chamber’s events be the business event of the month, or even the year, in Saskatoon. We want business leaders and political leaders to come to our city to speak. As a team, we continue to ask ourselves – is there something else we can do to add value for our members?” Lindbjerg remains passionate about growing Saskatoon’s business community and the Chamber’s many contributions towards a strong and vibrant city. She notes that historically it was the Chamber (previously the Saskatoon Board of Trade) that brought key landmarks such as city’s bridges, the Delta Bessborough Hotel, the Saskatoon Club, TCU Place and SaskTel Centre to the city, just to name a few. Another aspect of “building bridges” is creating organizations that are then able to self-sustain and thrive. For example, organizations that have spun-off from the Chamber over the years include the Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority (SREDA), Saskatchewan Young Professionals & Entrepreneurs (SYPE) and Tourism Saskatoon. What’s next for the Chamber? Lindbjerg says, “Everything we are doing is new and fresh – from our approach to advocacy, our events, our volunteer engagement channels, our partnerships and our approach to adding value to our members.” Even the Saskatoon Achievement in Business Excellence (SABEX) Awards, taking place on April 12, 2019 at TCU Place will offer a new and fresh feel and approach. “The SABEX Awards will be shorter and more dynamic, I’m so excited to see what people think.” Concludes Lindbjerg: “As President and CEO of the Chamber, I have the best job in the world. Saskatoon is a fast-growing city in a fast-growing province. Every day I get to represent our community. It’s team mentality, combined with individuality and entrepreneurship. This is what I feel makes Saskatoon’s business community so unique and vibrant.”

Outside of work, Kubica loves to bake and paint abstract artwork with acrylics. Her favourite things to bake are cakes and cupcakes – whether that’s for a birthday, graduation or wedding. Her signature flavour combination is a lemon cake with a coconut buttercream icing. And who inspires her culinary activities? Dara Hrytzak Janelle Kubica, Member Services Coordinator Janelle Kubica started as the Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce’s Member Services Coordinator four months ago. In this role, she supports both the Director of Member Experience and the Chamber’s many members. Kubica also works with the Chamber team on events such as the monthly Chamber on Tap held at LB Distillers. When we spoke, the next event on deck for the team was the Chamber Open House. A favourite recent event of Kubica’s was the Chamber’s luncheon with federal Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
Ralph Goodale. Minister Goodale spoke on ‘Strengthening Canadian Trade’ and the luncheon was held at the Remai Modern. Kubica grew up in the village of Christopher Lake, north of Prince Albert, and her parents still live there. Her two older brothers also live in Saskatoon. A great fit with her agreeable personality, Kubica has always worked in customer service in some capacity. She spent six years as a senior customer service representative with BMO Bank of Montreal at different branches in Saskatoon and Prince Albert. Kubica lives downtown and can easily walk
What’s something people might not know about you? Even though I am known for baking cakes and cupcakes, I don’t actually like to eat cupcakes. What’s your dream job? To be a baker and own my own bakery. Favourite virtue? Honesty. Favourite quality in a man? A sense of humour. Favorite quality in a woman? Positivity. What do you most appreciate in your friends? Willingness to listen and honesty. Plus I like our shared love of food and that my friends are always up to attempt to eat our body weight in sushi! What is your idea of happiness? Co.Labs Steers Tech Start-Ups Towards Commercialization by Elizabeth Ireland
Co.Labs is Saskatchewan’s first technology incubator and has served as a creative collaboration space for 52 tech start-ups in its first 12 months of operation. Companies typically stay at Co.Labs for a defined time of 12 to 15 months and are focused on productbased software or hardware that’s scalable. “Co.Labs is a completely different approach to assisting tech entrepreneurs in Saskatchewan,” says Jordan Dutchak, Executive Director of Co.Labs. Dutchak grew up in Saskatoon and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Commerce. He was also co-founder of Hacking Health Saskatoon and two tech start-ups of his own. Co.Labs began as a grassroots initiative
and officially opened in October 2017 as non-profit that is primarily funded by the provincial and federal government through Innovation Saskatchewan and Western Economic Diversification Canada. Companies are accountable to Co.Labs’ Board of Directors to hit specific milestones, including accelerated growth targets. If a start-up does not progress towards these milestones, in Dutchak’s words, they are “removed to make space for a new startup to take their place; it is a competitive program.” Co.Labs’ Board members are themselves successful tech entrepreneurs and represent some of the province’s largest tech companies. “Co.Labs serves as a guidepost and can provide mentorship by someone with a similar product offering or business model. High-caliber mentorship is immensely important for a tech start-up,” says Dutchak.

Mentors at Co.Labs have included Saskatoon native Jayesh Parmar, who is CEO and co-founder of the hugely successful Picatic.com. Picatic was sold to the NYSElisted company Eventbrite in August 2018. Another mentor is co-founder and CO O Michelle Zatlyn
of Cloudflare Inc. who appears on Fortune magazine’s 40 Under 40 list (Zatlyn grew up in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan). Dutchak is excited to talk about the start-ups currently based at Co.Labs – he describes Townfolio and SafetyTek as two current standouts. Townfolio is led by co-founder and CEO Ryley Iverson. It serves as a community profile network for municipalities and businesses to access hard-to-find public data. Since arriving at Co.Labs, Townfolio has doubled its revenues and was chosen from thousands of applicants to attend Techstars Kansas City Accelerator. Fans of the HBO television show Silicon Valley will know how important these types of accelerator programs are for taking a start-up to the next level. One of the fastest growing early-stage startups in Canada, SafetyTek is headed by cofounder and CEO Ryan Quiring. SafetyTek offers technology for onsite construction workers to meet occupational health and safety compliance. Their team was selected from thousands of applicants to be one of 10 companies at the venture-backed Alchemist Accelerator in the Bay Area. “At Co.Labs we create the sense of urgency that’s essential for a tech start-up to compete against companies based in places like Toronto and San Francisco. Downtown Saskatoon is a VIBRANT, exciting place. There are cranes on the skyline, contractors on the sidewalks, and hammers being swung in all sorts of projects – all awaiting their grand openings to host the community they serve. There is unprecedented development in
South Downtown with a 20-storey residential condominium, a 15-storey Alt Hotel, and a 13-storey office tower underway. With Nutrien’s announcement to also build their new headquarters on this site with another 18-storey building, this block will be a busy, URBAN place.
The Princess Shop The Princess Shop Mentorship and Female Youth Development Inc. has been providing an equivalent graduation experience for Saskatchewan’s at-risk female-identified students for 11 years, through a dress lending program (Dress Program) as well as beyond graduation day with mentorship (Fairy Godmother Program), and skill development and scholarship support (Next Chapter Program). To date, 1,030 women have gone through the Dress Program- all of which are eligible for the other two programs offered. The Next Chapter Program has made the most exciting developments since the first scholarship was presented in 2009 by Spa Academy. Since then, over $200,000 has been awarded through many different partnerships with local sponsors, donors, and post-secondary institutions, including the Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce! This year, the first housing scholarship was
awarded in partnership with Boardwalk; a Princess Graduate attending post-secondary has been granted 1-year free rent. The Princess Shop is continuing to break down barriers of success with program growth aimed at looking ‘outside the box’. The organization is seeking solutions for affordable childcare and basic necessities such as groceries, and is always interested in additional programming to assist with the ongoing support of the transition from high school to the next chapter of life. Sutherland Business Improvement District It is well known that Saskatoon, in general, has enjoyed some positive economic activity. Sutherland has not been excluded from this growth. One of our initiatives, as a business improvement district, is to establish a broad stakeholder interest to see our area regain its identity as a “small town” in light of all the development occurring elsewhere in the city. We have seen businesses wanting to locate in Sutherland. This includes businesses that have been located in other areas of the city and wanting to move on to Central Avenue. As well, local businesses want to expand but stay in Sutherland. The recent sale of the Sutherland Hotel to the Wasylenko family (of Rayner Agencies) is indicative of a family
business that will continue to be a part of our business community by re-purposing an existing property and achieving the growth they were looking for. Sutherland provides these businesses with a small town feel that fits the areas character in this busy corridor. Central Avenue is a unique centre of local culture and commerce. “Business growth” is the new ‘norm’ in the Sutherland Business Improvement District (SBID).

D’reen has spent 30 years in the Saskatoon food business and she has plenty of stories to tell. She’s served her food to Canadian icons such as Mordecai Richler, Bryan Adams and the Tragically Hip. She’s catered an all-vegetarian wedding and a wedding with traditional Nigerian dishes. And, she’s taught more cooking classes than she can count. D’reen grew up on a small Saskatchewan farm where her hobbies included baking cakes and writing away to companies like Kraft for recipes cards. She fondly remembers introducing fondue to her local 4-H Club.

D’reen moved to Saskatoon for university, worked in archeology with Parks Canada, and eventually toured around the bakeries and food markets of Europe. “Europe exposed me to a wonderful way of taking the time to enjoy food, versus the North American culture of fast food and eating on the run,” says D’reen. With its culture of siestas and tapas, Spain is still D’reen’s favourite European country – she’s been there five times. “If you’re not careful in Spain, you can end up eating tripe a lot.”

Back in Saskatoon, hosting her own private parties soon evolved into opening a 28-seat restaurant on Melrose Avenue. “I went straight from eating food to feeding people. On Melrose we had a blackboard menu that was always changing. I brought in ingredients that were new to Saskatoon at the time. Things like muskox, alligator, portobello mushrooms and passionfruit.”

D'reen, D'reen's Catering The Melrose Avenue restaurant was followed by D’reens on Broadway (the location is now the Yard & Flagon Pub), preparing pre-packaged dinners for sale at Costco and a food store. Eventually D’reen went on to manage and cater at the Manhattan Ballroom for five years before she moved back out on her own. D’reen’s Catering spent 10 years at its Avenue B location and now three years on Idylwyld Drive North. This current location has an outdoor patio that’s great for gatherings and BBQs, as well as an ideal spot to grow fresh herbs. The whole space can accommodate up to 30 people.
Team-building cooking classes
With her popular team-building cooking classes, D’reen brings together colleagues, clients and friends for three hours. A menu is chosen to suit the group’s interests and the cost includes a meal, beverages and culinary instruction from D’reen herself. When the group arrives, the cooks-to-be are greeted with beverages and appetizers. At the end of each class the group sits down at three tables, family-style, to enjoy their culinary creations.

Seven thousand people have been through my kitchen with our team-building cooking classes. As an instructor, I take on a character that has elements of Gordon Ramsay and Rachael Ray. It’s a bit twisted but really fun and delicious.

There are 28 themes to choose from, but also some rules (no recipes, no measuring cups and no measuring spoons). Teambuilding groups include corporations, small businesses, sales teams, birthday parties and stagettes.

What food trends is D’reen witnessing right now in Saskatoon? “A lot of local produce and meat which is fantastic. When the
economy is so-so, comfort foods are popular since people want to spend quality time with their family and friends. Food trends change quickly these days, but appetizers are always big and so is Mexican cuisine. Vietnamese food is a popular, fresh and light option as well.” D’reen’s Catering has three full-time staff, plus part-time staff and servers. D’reen appreciates the benefits offered through her Chamber membership, especially the excellent options for smaller businesses that want to provide group insurance and health plans for their employees. Her current catering clients are corporations, theatres, store openings, weddings and other special events. Working for You The Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce continues to actively advocate on behalf of its membership. Federal Ministers Talk Trade
In September, the Saskatoon Chamber had the pleasure of hosting two federal cabinet ministers for a fireside chat on trade. The Honourable Jim Carr, Minister of International Trade Diversification, and the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business and Export Promotion, took the stage over lunch to deliver their thoughts on international trade. Key topics of discussion included NAFTA renegotiations, the TransPacific trade agreement (CPTPP) and foreign direct investment in Canada.
The New NAFTA
On October 4th, the Saskatoon Chamber took the opportunity to host a FLASH Event with the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. The luncheon discussion focused on the recently negotiated United States-MexicoCanada-Agreement (USMCA) and what it means for Canadians. Minister Goodale referred to the agreement in principle as a good deal and identified vital dimensions to Canada’s negotiating success, including multi-level outreach efforts to connect with American counterparts and the negotiating team’s patience throughout the process. He reflected on the Canadian solidarity that was experienced across the country and noted the support provided by the business community, including the Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce and multiple Chambers across Canada.
International Connections – China and India
In September, Darla Lindbjerg, CEO of the Saskatoon Chamber, participated in a trade mission to China, promoting the province of Saskatchewan as a place to do business.
Minister Ralph Goodale speaking on USMCA Alongside Premier Moe and numerous local businesses, Ms. Lindbjerg participated in various meetings with Chinese businesses and government officials to discuss potential trade and business development opportunities. Ms. Lindbjerg also attended an informative roundtable discussion with the High Commissioner for India to Canada to discuss innovation and trade opportunities in India.

On Wednesday September 5th, the annual CEO Dinner Super Series was hosted by

the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce and the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce. This year’s event featured a panel discussion on the agrifood sector. The panel members included Chuck Magro, President and CEO of Nutrien; Michael Hoffort, President and CEO of Farm Credit Canada; Dr. Maurice Moloney, Executive Director and CEO of the Global Institute of Food Security; and Dr. Trevin Stratton, Chief Economist for the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Due to the diverse backgrounds and expertise of the panel members, the discussion was extremely informative and offered varied perspectives on agri-food competitiveness. The Chamber will continue to address the concerns of our members and businesses in Saskatoon and the surrounding area to ensure that Saskatoon has a thriving business climate and is the place to live and do business on the prairies.

As with all change, the process has been exciting and energizing, with a few bumps along the way as one would expect with any change process. I am happy to report, the Saskatoon Chamber is on track. A new operations team at the Chamber, under the leadership of our CEO Darla Lindbjerg, is well positioned to take the Chamber forward, the Board of Directors is energized, and members are curious, supportive, and engaged. The Saskatoon Chamber has successfully achieved the goal of finding a new home for staff and operations. Our office space reflects a modern approach to business and is a resource to members who need training or meeting space. Our official grand opening as well as an appreciation reception for members of past committees was a resounding success. Good food and beverages for all. Thank-you to all that attended. The Board has established the mandates and initial membership of two strategic committees; one for the Advocacy agenda and another to develop relationships to support Indigenous Economic Growth.
