Editor’s Note Time flies so fast. As the clock ticks before our very own eyes, we are very fortunate to see the consant change of our world and environment that time has brought all along. Unfortunately now, we the Millenial generation are starting to condition ourselves to work our way to our dreams for this new era of tommorow brought by the pandemic. I know it sounds morbid but the vulnerability of our generation is a wonder for me. How could life exist in a state where we could easily end it? How do we continue to live in our world where every corner is a possible hazard considering the presence of the pandemic.

Photographed by: Lance Satojito

Shouldn’t it be a given though? For us to think that in any second, our lives could end for we are just soft meat and breakable bones. For us to realize our vulnerability and being invincible is getting stronger day by day thinking that a pandemic is just on the rise. But no, We continue to tread our lives that have been given to us. It might be our memories and stories that is weighing our feet on firm ground, or it could simply be the unconquerable human spirit. The burning desire to go on despite tragedies.

A paradise of Malevolent dust, a menace to the environment. By: Satojito, Lance Joshua P. and Ymballa, Fitz Raven W. (2021)

azzling white. Diamondlike sheen. Borrowed beauty. These are the characteristics of the dolomite sand, nuisance dust that has been the talk of the town, storming controversies, and rattling environmentalists back in mid2020 for its potential dangers to the environment. Dolomite, a sedimentary rock and an anhydrous carbonate mineral composed of calcium magnesium carbonate was sourced and mined in Alcoy, Cebu, and was spread across a small corner of Manila Bay. It was done as a part of the Manila Bay’s Beautification Program, specifically the “beach nourishment project” spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in a portion of Manila Bay’s shoreline as its welcome development. NUISANCE DUST first in Philippine history, a Man-made white sand beach amid a busy city. The grand opening of the dolomite sand beach attracted the general public and netizens across the Philippines. From politicians like Mayor “Yorme” Isko Moreno Domagoso of Manila, it received praises, saying it will attract more tourists and investors and will create probable jobs for the people of his city in an interview by ANC. However, backlash and negative comments recoiled from Netizens and Environmentalists across the Philippines with claims that it will be

very harmful environmental-wise. HAZARDOUS DUNES riginating from warm, shallow, marine environments and forms when limestone detects the presence of magnesium-rich groundwater, according to geologist Hobart King. He also claims that it has low solubility, which makes it resistant to acid percentage found in rain and soil. Environmentalists claim that the dumping truckloads of dolomite sand potentially hastens the danger of burying marine life present in the bay. One significant factor is the disturbance of marine habitats during construction. It will also lessen the oxygen percentage in the seawater which will suffocate fishes around the area.

O

MALIGNANT GRITS OF ROCK ealth risks towards humans are another factor in how potentially dangerous a dolomite beach can be. According to the Department of Health (DOH), dolomite rocks contain differing levels of crystalline silica, a common mineral that can cause drastic damage to the lungs or even become cancerous when inhaled in large amounts. This material is deemed malevolent since it can also irritate the skin and eyes. Opposing these claims, dolomite is also classified as a relatively non-toxic substance. Even so, little information exists as to its potential to produce respiratory disorders with prolonged exposure.

H

MALEVOLENT SEDIMENTS, JEOPARDIZED SOURCES he dolomite mine and quarry site located in Alcoy, Cebu, where the crushed dolomite originated, is the largest dolomite quarry site in the Philippines. Since the 1980s it has been mining mountains of dolomite for export across South East Asia

T

and Japan. The mining, refining, transport, and export of dolomites also happens in the same area, where it is sourced. It has been reported that a 500-meter span of seafloor housing reef corals and marine life were destroyed while sourcing dolomite in Alcoy, Cebu. Unfortunately, this event has permanently and drastically dwindled the fish produce, and catch

of local fishermen around the area.

I

n conclusion, the dumping of dolomite sand in Manila bay was a mistake since it poses multiple hazards to the ecosystem, the people, marine life, and etc. It contains different harmful levels of crystalline silica, a mineral that can cause damage to the respiratory system if inhaled in

large quantities. Furthermore, there is very little knowledge available on its potential to cause respiratory diseases. In addition, mining out the dolomite could cause further damage to coral reefs located near the quarry in Alcoy, Cebu. The government should have prioritized more important matters and used their budget on something more relevant. 02

Visayan people have a wide range of choices when it comes to vacation spots. However, humans tend to be unappreciative of the gifts bestowed by nature. Recently, dolomite rocks extracted from Alcoy, Cebu caused

damage to the marine ecosystem in the town’s surrounding water. Corals within a 500-meter area were destroyed. The damage was first seen from the inspection conducted by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO). The unfortunate spilling of these crushed dolomites happened during its transfer to carrier vessels through conveyor belts.

that turned the seabed and corals white. Corals provide shelter and food to fishes. If they are destroyed, the amount of fishes in the area will decrease. This marine ecosystem destruction will not only affect marine life, but also the livelihood of the locals in the area who rely on fishing as their source of income. Alcoy’s marine ecosystem should be given attention to rehabilitate, and there are many ways we can help in restoring its once beauty and abundance. In large projects like this, the government should spearhead the rehabilitation and protection of Alcoy’s surrounding waters. Getting rid of the dolomite under the water and stopping its transportation will greatly help revive the lost marine life. Joining local environmental organizations that aims to reduce negative effects and impacts to marine life will also contribute to its recovery. If we refuse to acknowledge the problem brought by the dolomite to the waters of Alcoy in Cebu as early as now, their marine ecosystem will not thrive.

T I

ronically, the beautification of Manila Bay births a damage to other waters in the country. This is because the incident that happened in Cebu can be linked to the transformation of Manila Bay into a “whitesand beach”. The crushed dolomite were supposed to be delivered and used along the Roxas Boulevard in the said beach. Incident like this that roots from human activities must be given more attention from now on. It can cause a shift and disrupt the

marine ecosystem and could possibly affect local livelihoods. Ever since, negative human activities were the reasons why mishaps and calamities hinder the country’s progress. The supposed abundant and healthy marine ecosystem of Alcoy, Cebu, is now being compromised and could become worse if not solved immediately. The exposure of Alcoy’s waters to the crushed dolomite being transported, caused heavy siltation

he incident that happened in the waters in Cebu should now serve as our wake up call to move and create a change. We humans deeply rely on our natural resources which make our lives here possible. We should be mindful and responsible of our activities that induce environmental problems. The government and the whole community should work handin-hand in resolving environmental issues and developing new ideas that would not cause further harm to our surroundings, and to our planet. Finally, as individuals, we should make rational decisions that will not compromise the state of our environment. In this way, we set ourselves as a good example and we 04

They always try to improve more, either themselves or the things around them, with the use of the natural resources. As they try to improve, the effect it brings to the environment is also getting bigger and bigger as time pass by. Here are some things that affect our environment. First is business. A lot of businessman around the world are aiming to be a well-known and successful business venture. This goal and mission can be very advantageous to people and economy but not to our environment. Why? It’s because, as they try to create a business in an area, a change will be made to the original landscape of nature as they will try to build buildings, and cut down trees— which are the habitats of some animals. In addition to this, Philippines is a country that is rich in minerals and natural resources that can give a higher value of money to businessman that is why minings both legal and illegal are done in our country. ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSE: Stand with Sierra Madre

ierra Madre is one of the proofs how Philippines is rich in biodiversity. Seeing how there are many kinds of species of animals and plants that can only be found in our country, we are surely blessed with it. However, as we keep focusing on improving technology to make our daily lives easier, we tend to lose sight on what’s really important. Illegal human activities are a major concern right now and it affects not just the environment but also us. Since we benefit from it, we should help the environment. We can’t just ignore what is really happening especially if it causes a negative impact. We should be aware that once we destroy our planet enough, we can’t simply move. ierra Madre is the longest mountain range in the Philippines with over 540 kilometers that runs from Cagayan Province to Quezon Province. It covers the northeast coast of Luzon island, serving as a natural shield against typhoons coming from the Pacific Ocean. Its long mountain ranges serve as a natural barrier, attenuating and shielding us from extreme damage by the force of these typhoons. Furthermore, it supports major infrastructure, including irrigation dams, water utility and power plants, that are serving urban settlements, including Metro Manila. The continuous forest landscape represents about 40% of the coun-

We need the relief of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range as we tend to encounter the climate problem. However, Daraitan citizens fear that the unethical construction of the Kaliwa Dam can further put their lives at risk and demolish their residences when future storms, like Ulysses, strikes Tanay, Rizal. Despite the concerns posed, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) defended the Kaliwa Dam project from those who expressed concern about Sierra Madre’s potential deforestation. This Kaliwa Dam construction undermines legal procedures, displaces thousands of indigenous people, and will cause catastrophic environmental harm to the Sierra Madre. With the increase in climate change, the dams are also becoming the most serious threat to parts of Luzon. Ironically, these dams were also intended to help control the floods. y any point, it’s devastating, but the environment makes a difference. The climate, bodies of water and the water table are all affected when deforestation occurs. To add, the extinction of biodiversity is one of the worst consequences of deforestation. When areas surrounding bodies

of water are deforested, floods are more likely to disrupt fish migration, flushing out burrowing mammals, reptiles and insects, and killing plants, that can result in knock-on effects on other species. Yet, more than a generation ago, illegal activities such as land grabbing, illegal logging, and quarrying are still rampant. ctivities like Illegal logging, illegal mining and deforestation bring bad effects to every organism. Animals would lose their

natural habitats and flash floods or landslides may occur due to the lack of trees holding the soil and absorbing water. Apparently, the same thing is happening to Sierra Madre as these activities keep on going. It causes some parts that are covered by it to be frequently flooded. Their actions are also affecting other people and if it keeps on going, who knows what worse things could happen in the near future.

P

hilippines is blessed with great diversity and if taken care properly it surely could give us more. But with how people are trying to ruin it now, we’ll never know how long it’ll last. Before any of that happens, let us protect Sierra Madre. We better take good care of our environment and do our best to protect it so that future generations can still see the beauty of our nature. If we choose life, we have to choose to preserve the Sierra Madre.

It seems only brave and bright thoughts and concerted effort can make this possible with all these obstacles. We must go back to basics and conserve our forests, be more vigilant in our logging, mining and quarrying efforts, and appeal to the indigenous peoples. We should be educated on the many environmental concerns that our country is facing, and be motivated to participate and take action in preserving our land. 08

People use the many resources gathered in different locations by different methods, in order to survive and improve the way of living. It can be either natural or man-made resources, which of any is important. Natural resources are the most essential but there are consequences if overused, as it takes time to form. The gathering of natural resources must be reduced, and must have large quantities returned. The preservation of natural ones, will prove efficient in taking care of the environment. 09

verpopulation, air pollution, burning fossil fuels, and deforestation are some of the human activities that affect the environment. This can lead to environmental degradation, decrease of agricultural crops and growth of trees, and producing a large quantity of energy which can impact on global warming. Direct results of human activities such as decreased water quality, greenhouse gas emissions, depletion of natural resources and contribution to global climate change can also impact the environment in numerous ways. Increasing hazardous wastes which is a threat to the environ-

ment is a result of over-consumption of resources and improper waste disposal. It increases health hazards like the polluted water which spread different diseases, affecting endangered species, disruption in ecosystem and ecological imbalance.

ature will be facing climate change, ocean acidification, permafrost melting, habitat loss, contamination and disturbing species. This can have a serious impact on the natural ecosystem, the air, the water, and nutrients that help things to grow. uman activities affect the environment in drastic ways however, there are solutions that can prevent it from falling. The community should be responsible for lowering the loss by taking actions that can be beneficial both to the environment and living creatures. Action such as using

eco-friendly substitutes for plastics, conserving water and electricity, replacing disposable items with reusable items, and recycling the waste to preserve natural resources can help maintain the health of the environment. Planting trees will truly save the environment that is why impractical cutting down of trees should be forbidden and start to plant new trees. Keep earth and soil clean, engage in afforestation, and reducing consumption of resources is likewise essential in saving nature. Providing awareness through environmental education or environmental campaigns and working active-

We take something, without thinking of the consequences done upon the environment. As the ones who caused it to be like this. We should make a stand for it, we should take better care of our natural resources. It is not too late to fix the mistakes caused, so make the move and make proper decisions upon it.

ike any other girl, I longed to have someone whom I can share and talk about girl stuff other than my mother. Talk about our crushes while painting our nails on a Friday night sleepover. Then soon enough, plan each other’s wedding and have a child at the same time, so they can be best friends like their moms. That was the epitome of a best friend for me when I was 11 years old. Someone to have as their companion for life. I once had a best friend who I thought would be my friend for the rest of the time. But she was the same person who broke my fantasy of being in an Alexa-Liana duo from a Barbie movie at such a young age.

I

was a transferee from another school in 3rd grade, and I have no friends. She walked past me in the hallway, and I merely thought that she could be my friend one day. Then next year came, we were in the same section, and in 4th grade, I was ecstatic to have her as my very first best friend. We do stuff together. We keep each other’s secrets, help each other as much as we can, and we even have matching bracelets to signify our friendship. I thought, just like rocks on the beach, our friendship will be forever. However, after she met another girl in 5th grade, it quickly vanished as the waves came and washed the rocks away into the sea.

D

uring our 5th grade, we never talked to each other as much. They started doing things together and left me alone for me. I was sad and angry for some time. I felt like I was robbed, but I kept it to myself because she is still my best friend. After our friendship ended, I started to discover more about myself. During that time, I started to read books and practiced drawing. I focused more on myself and my studies, which helped me with my growth as a person. Before the school year ends, that is when I met my best friend of today. But what makes her my friend until now is not my unrealistic expectations of how a friendship should be; it is my understanding that it doesn’t matter how many friends she will have, but how she treats me as a person is what matters most.

y name is Red C. Bayot, “C” stands for Cuachon. I am 17 years old, turning 18 this June 29, 2021. I am currently living at Brgy. Alegria Murcia, Negros Occidental. I am this kind of person that you could describe as a lively person, I despise being bored, if I don’t have things to do I really find ways just to have entertainment. I am enjoying my life while I’m still young because I know in the future, more likely I will me more busy and may not have enough time to enjoy myself anymore.

W

hen I was a child I really like to go outside play with my friends, those were the days that I really enjoy my childhood because for me in that time, problem does not exist, I just play and play until I am fully satisfied. Other than that I am very friendly, even now, I have many friends from my childhood until now. But now, I’m already 17 years old, a Grade 11 STEM student, I must say, I really miss those good old days, where problems don’t exist like, I can just enjoy myself all day without getting worried. But I must face reality, I must face new challenges because I am not a child anymore, I must work hard for my future and make my parents proud.

C

urrently I am studying at UNO-R as a Grade 11 STEM student, and I must say, it is pretty challenging. Honestly, I still have no idea what course I am going to take in college, and if I must say it frankly, I am not sure why I took STEM as my strand, even though I am not very good at mathematics. But for now I have no choice but to face this problem I put myself into because this is my responsibility as a student and as a son. I am always giving my best at everything that I do, my highest goal that I must achieve is to make my parents proud and not let their efforts go to waste, making them proud is my top 1 priority, I want to pay them back for all of their sacrifices. My grades are not that good, I just maintain my passing grade just not to fail. I am not really stressed out about my grades because parents encouraged me to give my best at everything and just enjoy the moment.

As simple, as saying

Thank You By: Denisa, Lian Anthony

W

hen life gives you lemons you should make a lemonade, the quote that has changed my life. For me, it means that if you are given a blessing cherish it, and give thanks to God who provided it. My family provided us with everything, worked real hard just to provide us what we have now. I guess I was a douchebag and an idiot, because I did not appreciate them and the things they have done for me and my siblings.

I

was a lazy kid, and did not appreciate what was given or done to me. I received some things and gifts, and did not even say thanks to the givers which are my uncles and aunts, and especially my parents. One time when I was still in 7th grade, my aunt gave me an action figure and after receiving it, I tried to run away. When I was about to run my parents called me and told me to say thank you to my aunt. I said thank you in a way that I did not care, when we got home my parents said to me, “You should appreciate what you are given because there are people that have nothing at all, and you are lucky to have people giving gifts to you”. I did not listen nor believe what my parents said, and days later when I was exploring the city by myself, I saw a person along the streets that had nothing, not even family and a home. I realized that my parents are right, and I should be grateful that I have at least something given to me.

N

ow that I realized the things that I have done, I felt like a fool. I know that I should have been better at that time, and I should have listened to my parents and given thanks to the people that give. When I actually gave thanks to my aunt just the next time she gave me a gift, I could see the happiness in her face that I did. Now I give thanks to everything that you receive, because other people actually do not have or receive any good things. It is just as simple as saying thank you to what is given to you.

Drums, Lyres, Majorettes

How it changed my life By: Hinguillo, Charmay

I

was a grade 6 student and a majorette in a band. That time we were preparing for a contest for the upcoming Masskara festival. If it’s time for us to practice, together with my bandmates, we would ask permission to not attend the class which makes us happy. Since our practice always ends late, I can hear crickets or maybe a mockingbird chirping, I feel cold that slightly weakens my leg but the practice must go on. My favorite part every time we practice till night is the air at night that always clears my mind and even gives me strength. While preparing for the contest our band would watch other contestant’s practices and ask for some advice. I was slightly envious because of how professional they look from the height which we kind of lack, to the instruments which we also lack.

W

hen we went to the plaza to practice we saw one contestant that is also about to practice there. It really shows how good they are and how nice they are. They have a triple drum that we don’t have, but they willingly let us borrow it. So when our turn came, I realized how big and wide the floor is, it made me shiver and nervous that caused me to make many mistakes, I didn’t smile or made any expression. I thought I was the only not doing so good but our instructor said how ugly our performance, as we didn’t make any expression and the teamwork is just not there.

T

he time has come it was the day of the contest, we are at the back waiting for our turn I heard one audience saying to me that my hands were trembling so i tightly grasp my baton and it was time to call our band name. While performing, the only thing I can hear is the music, I feel like my body is dancing on its own, I smile throughout the performance and did not take my gaze out to the judges. I almost drop my baton because it got loosen maybe because of the nervousness but luckily my reflexes is present that day. We finished the performance successfully and when it’s time to announce the winner we got the 5th place, even so this already makes me happy and proud. I may feel insecure and envious but that doesn’t mean that I give up mid-way and still believe that there is something I can treasure forever.

The Sting of

M

y name is Kent John M. Inot, born and raised in Escalante City. I am the youngest in the family and the spoiled one. I am that person who hates boredom that is why I always do things that give me fun. Although I am being spoiled by my parents, I always make sure that I do good in school but things have changed. I was enjoying my life when my family needed to transfer to Bacolod City for some reason and because of this, I became less motivated in school.

I

enrolled late than the other students which caused me to be in the last section, which is a first time experience. Being a transferee together with the feeling of disappointment, I lost my interest in school. I chose to isolate myself from my classmates and wasn’t motivated to build friendship with them. Playing computer games for more than 5 hours a day and skipping class without my parents knowing it became a habit of mine. I sometimes chose to play with my niece rather than doing my assignments and studying for a quiz. I was back into reality when I saw how my parents became disappointed when they saw how low my final grades are.

W

ith that disappointment, I learned many things in life. First, it doesn’t mean that when I am in the last section, I should lose my interest in school. I can always motivate myself and strive harder in order for me to pass and get into a higher section the next school year. Second, life inside the school is much better with having friends around you that help you to enjoy studying together. Lastly, I realized that it would be a lot easier if I’ll seek comfort and help from my parents whenever there is a problem. The moment they learned about my failure, they felt so disappointed but instead of making me feel bad, they encouraged me to just enjoy and to do my best to be back on my desired section.

I

can’t even recall my very first time performing a declamation piece way back when I was in second grade. I have joined declamation contests since I was in grade school where I am completely oblivious of what I do every time I’m on stage. I just remember memorizing a 7-minute long piece, acting weird, making complex facial expressions, and just bowing at the end of my performance. For the last seven years of doing declamation, although I have mastered the art of battling with stage fright, I am not still fond of doing it. I can say that declamation’s something that I do for a long time honestly but I never liked or felt proud of doing it, even once, until recently. I see it as a weird talent that no one enjoys to watch that’s why I hated doing it, just a little bit. However, as I entered high school, it taught me one of the most valuable lesson I’d surely bring for the rest of my life.

I can still see and feel clearly how my palms sweat a river that day, my first time competing with the other schools in our city. My knees were weak and trembling as I anticipate what will happen after I step on stage, the same with the feeling you get when you’re about to ride a rollercoaster. Voices of my opponents performing were echoing inside my head like church bells on a Sunday afternoon. I am so nervous because I spent the whole hour overthinking what the audience would think after they see me imitating the heroes on a famous mobile game called Mobile Legends. Right after hearing the emcee call my name, I held tight into the round piece of card with number 7 written on it in which was attached on my dress. I bowed, took a deep breath, said the words: “Wise choice!” imitating Miya’s voice, and stage fright completely left my body. Clueless of what I have decided, I have just experienced a significant realization.

The moment I started performing, I felt the strong urge to completely let go of my anxious thoughts and just genuinely enjoy what I am doing. I started to enter and to temporarily live in the world in which my piece revolves around. To my surprise, I aced it and won first place. It all comes down to this idea: it is all about the journey and not the destination. You have

Discovering oneself:

The road not taken By: Satojito, Lance Joshua

“Two roads diverge in a yellow wood.” This line was taken from a poem by Robert Frost. It presented a vital state in my life where I had to choose between 2 significant things, one, I get to represent my School in a Regional Painting Competition, the other is to represent my school in the Regional Schools Press Conference. I kept thinking about my decisions for a whole week! Thinking about the pros and cons of each, and guessing the outcomes and probabilities if I joined. A week has gone by, and another Teacher appointed me to represent my school in an AutoCAD House Designing competition to be held at the Division of Bacolod City. Now, the two roads that diverged is no longer two, It’s Three roads diverge in a yellow wood. Pressure and stress took over my body like a virus, but all I know, is that in the end I will toughen myself up and choose one path to take. “And sorry, I could not travel both, and be one traveler” long I stood, and thought about what I could and could not excel into. This was the first time in my life that I have to make a serious decision where my future could end up on. One wrong move and all of these skills and talents of mine will be disregarded. It’s not the point where it costs my life, since my parents did not even know that I excel in many things, still, they support me with what I want. They even bought me a DSLR camera which I really appreciated. T’was a tough decision to make, but, as we all know, in the end I only chose one. I chose to pursue my Regional contest in Campus Journalism, I invested in my materials, and even joined seminars and won in categories. I chose this simply because I already won in many Artistic events but not in writing and such. When it comes to writing and Photojournalism, I was just a juvenile neophyte as what my Adviser coined a nickname for me. I chose this path simply because I worked really hard to achieve it. I auditioned for Editorial Cartooning, to no avail, I tried Radio and TV Broadcasting but I only made it to our schools’ finals, I also auditioned for Photojournalism but they said it lacked a lot to get into our School Publication. Fortunate enough, our English Teacher gave us a task to design a brochure, and that is where it all started. I got into our school’s Publication, as a Layout Artist. Sadly, I entered the category with no background knowledge whatsoever. I started from scratch, learning every day and practicing every night. With all that hard work and dedication, perseverance and determination, luckily, it bear success. I shouted, “yes! Daog kami!” And climbed the stages’ flight of stairs feeling like I’m in heaven on earth. The path that I took, took a turn for the best! This was my first time competing in this field and I succeeded! “And I, I took the one less traveled by” And that has made all the difference! Taking on new ventures and exploring the unknown might seem ambitious for some, but for me, it is the gaining of new experience and knowledge. Always remember that staying in one place, making walls, and disconnecting from the world, will never get you to your destination. As for Andy William’s song that goes, “To dream the impossible dream, to fight the unbeatable foe, to bear with unbearable sorrow, to run where the brave dare not go” It reminds us that going out of our comfort zone is living our lives to the fullest. This event in my life taught me how to become a versatile being. Now, I am as versatile as I can be. It drastically changed who I once was, to who I am today, and I thank my Family who supported me in my journey in journalism, and thank my Adviser who constructively criticized me to mold and get the best version of myself. To end this, my message to you readers, is that our lives are just meant to break barriers, take down walls and explore the unexplored. Photo from: Woot.com

My JOURNey By: Tagulalap, Ariane Diane I.

I

used to join many extracurricular activities. I was once a part of a rondalla ensemble, I did swimming and actively joined other clubs but what I am looking forward to the most to be in is our school paper team. Until you reached a certain grade level, you won’t be able to join the school’s journalism. When my time finally came I first applied as a photojournalist. Already prepared the camera, I begged mom to lend me. I also practiced taking some shots, I was pretty excited. So happy about the results of my practice that even if my shot made no sense, I still admired the flower looking up to the vast sky.

I

did participate in the audition as a photojournalist but turns out there are 5 of us who want to take that spot but other than that, no one auditioned for the writing categories. Seeing that no other students want to join, the adviser asked us to choose one to be a photojournalist and the rest could be writers instead. We looked at each other and tried to debate who will take the spot for photojournalism. In the end, the only boy got the spot and we 4 girls were assigned to other writing categories, and that’s how I ended up in Editorial Writing. I never knew how to write an editorial and a competition will be held 2-3 months later. Our adviser taught us all of the things we have to know about our writing categories, starting from the very basic. She honestly told us our mistakes and how to improve them. Time passed by and we are having fun with what we do. The day of the competition arrived and our adviser told us to keep calm and remember important things from our practices. From completely beginner journalists we successfully brought home the beacon as most of us got qualified for regionals. Though we never got a chance to do well in there but it was a very fun experience anyways. I entered high school wanting to join the school paper again but for some reason, I never got a chance to until 9th grade. It was my first time being assigned to collaborative desktop publishing after my long absence in writing. We never got qualified for the regionals as a team so I tried again the next year. With a new team, we practiced hard, stayed up late in school finishing an output. Not going home until our work was not checked. Joining seminars and workshop trying to learn more, not just in writing but also what it means to be a student journalist. It was hard considering I have to balance my studies too. We faced many difficulties especially with the schedule. We managed to get 2nd place but we’re doing online publishing instead. Doing it online is new to us, we were struggling and it is quite challenging. We faced some financial problems but we worked it out somehow. We got a place in regionals and all of our hard work paid off. That adds up to my experiences as a student journalist.

N

ot all things go the way you want to be. Sometimes they are meant to be like that so you just have to brace it yourself and face it head on. You’ll face more hardships but with pure hard work and dedication, it will pay off in the end. Just take pride in what you do and do it the way you want to. Even now i’m still a student journalist. It maybe not my desired position in the first place but writing editorial articles now just naturally became a part of me. There’s always more in every one of us we just need to embrace and accept it with all our heart.

Distant Learning to oust Traditional Classes?

NO WAY! By: Satojito, Lance Joshua P. (2021) Fun, exciting, and thrilling- the roller coaster ride of traditional classes is much too good to be replaced by distant learning. In these troubled times, many alternatives have been tried to pursue and continue education despite the dangers offered by the pandemic. Distant learning was chosen as the best alternative to traditional classes for the meantime, as COVID is still rampant and extensive. However, current feedback from teachers and parents is that distant learning is effective. These statements endanger the security of traditional classes, leaving hot ongoing debates if distant learning might be able to replace traditional classes in the near future. Distant learning offers more options through its variety of learning modes, but it still cannot put up to the teachings learned in traditional classes. The feels and thrills experienced in traditional classes, cannot be replaced by speaking to microphones, and seeing through screens illuminated by red, blue, and green lights. Having your webcam as your eye, is far different from the reality of seeing the joy in your classmates in traditional classes. This just proves that distant learning will never be able to replace the experience felt and learned in traditional classes.

IMMERSIVE SCHOOL LIFE Traditional classes offer a widerange of opportunities for Students and Teachers too. It promotes social interaction, a life-skill that is key when they graduate and work in most jobs in the near future. This is of utmost importance since future jobs, working as a nurse, teacher, or a businessman re25

quires social interaction every workday. In addition, traditional classes build teamwork and camaraderie to students. Being able to learn how to work as a team is essential in young learners to develop their attitude to coordinate and effectively work with one another.

E X T R A C U R R I C U L A R LY VERSATILE ENVIRONMENT Traditional classes in Institutions also offer a variety of extracurricular activities that cannot be fully experienced through distance learning. Journalism, sports, and chorale groups are some high demand extracurricular activities that students greatly enjoy in traditional classes. Extracurricular activities are channels for rekindling the lessons learned in traditional classrooms. It gives students the opportunity to apply academic skills in real-world situations. Engaging in these activities also makes part of a well-rounded education.

COLLABORATIVE ABODE FOR QUALITY EDUCATION The quality of highly collaborative learning observed in traditional classes cannot be compared to the quality provided by distant learning. Moreover, it has been shown not only to improve higher-level cognitive skills in pupils, as observed in traditional class setting. In addition to this, it also increases the students motivation drive, confidence and higher-level self-esteem. Collaborative learning provided by traditional classes will enhance instructional experience by demonstrating it practi-

This traditional learning setting

offers a broader spectrum of imparting more knowledge to the students. It also makes school more enjoyable by offering hands-on practical lessons. If online courses overtake conventional traditional schooling, the views of the future generations about the traditional way

of teaching will depreciate even more. Unfortunately, they will develop to be as much less empathetic and give off less social interaction in the future environment, for students will not be able to effectively communicate with each other, unlike in a traditional setting. All

things considered, traditional classes are a much easier way to study. The usual and traditional way to teach students encourages social engagement, teaches essential life skills such as time management, and encourages essential life skills that will help students in the near future. 26

er addition to my age. This year, I will be celebrating my legality, the 18th year of my journey as a woman, a friend, and a daughter here on earth. Looking back from the years I consumed, I have realized that there were many things that I have already achieved like those small and big wins that I’ve celebrated with myself. A long train of thoughts hits me as I lie here on my bed. As the night deepens, I thought about the things about my future, the present that I am dealing with right now, my goals, and my plans. I closed my eyes realizing that the tiny caterpillar my mother once had, is slowly taking her own pace to become a beautiful butterfly everyone might not adore but she herself loves genuinely. Each year as my birthday fast approaches, I reflect and look back to the year that I had from the past birthday I celebrated. Did I reach my goals? Did I hit the ball? Have I become better? Things like these run through my mischievous mind. By then, I’ll find myself in the nostalgia of the memories that I had in those moments. These are the things that make me grasp the reality that I am human, too. I grow in the pro-

cess, through the pressure. Everything I go through, I had to go through for me to be as precious and delicate as this. Fair enough, I am like a diamond shining under pressure. I can be a rose full of thorns blooming in a garden. I swam with the waves of life through the storms in the middle of the ocean or even with its cloudless flight with the sun. It might feel like drowning when I’m alone, but I’m one with all the creatures around me. I don’t walk alone in the dark— I kept my hand high but feet on the ground. When everything feels like they repel from your energy, find the things that attract more of you. Remember to protect your peace and the calmest waves of your heart. Never let anyone destroy nor harm the rest of you. Be as reserved as the seat at a restaurant waiting for the exact name of the customer that’s meant to take it. Growing up to face the challenges this world has put to your table, does not make you weak and less of a human. It even makes you tougher and braver to live your life every day, so keep falling in love with growth. As that last thought entered my mind, I fell asleep. 28

The Stunning World of

Basketball

By: Inot, Kent John M. (2021)

There are a lot of sports and hobbies that we can enjoy which can be classified into movies, music, books, and many other things. Many people enjoy the fun of playing sports such as football, basketball, baseball, and many more. Moreover, sports aren’t just for entertainment but it also keeps us fit, healthy, and makes us active. Sports are activities that may help us in maintaining a proper physique, and a positive mentality. Also, sports have their advantages and disadvantages depending on how the person sees them. Among all the sports, basketball is my favorite to play. Basketball is a game wherein played by two different teams with 5 players each team inside the court. It is a game composed of 4 quarters having 10 minutes each game and an overtime is given when 4th quarter in the game ends and the both teams have the same score. The both teams will try to aim 29

for a high score and whoever has the higher score wins the game. In a team each player has its own position in the game, he can be a point guard, center, power forward, small forward, and shooting guard. Although basketball is easy to play and though its not a serious game sometimes, there are still rules and don’t and do’s that should be followed by the players. For example, when playing a 5v5 game and I noticed that my opponents break some of the rules I can’t call for violation but rather the referee will be the one to call a violation on the player. Dr. Naismith was the one who invented basketball in 1891. He came up with an idea that was a 9-on-9 game and the only thing to do is to shoot the ball in the peach basket. The reason why James Naismith invented basketball for them to play indoor sport is because of winter and they can’t play baseball or football outside. Basketball has 13 rules that were created by

James Naismith but as time goes by some rules changed and improved so that the game will be more exciting and fun to play. Nowadays almost every street now has a basketball court on it and a lot of people play this game. As a boy who loves to play basketball, this type of sport is my way of relieving stress and a way of enjoyment. Ev-

The sound of the dribbling of the ball, the sound of the shoes as it makes contact with the floor, the panting of the players as they try to run and catch the ball and the shouts of the player as they

try to make conversations with their teammates always boost the excitement within myself. Every time I feel the texture of the ball while holding and dribbling it, it always showcases my competent side. All in all, even the simple term basketball already means happiness to me.

It ensures the peace of mind of those people playing it. A sporty person would certainly experience less depression. Most noteworthy, sports brings happiness and joy in the life of individuals.
