a future together.

Our History SA"ITERWHITE LOG HOMES began with humble beginnings: and we are still humble, (and a little proud). Our journey is truly an example of hard work, perseverance, and a great group of employees.

Early days...

Sam Satterwhite left college in 1973,

lacking a semester of graduating, to start his own business. With plans

to use his real estate broker's license

to sell farm and ranch properties, he

decided to first built his own home which was a brick A-frame, quite

different for conservative East Texas.

A friend of his in the timber business

stopped by one day and asked him,

"If you'll build something as different as an A-frame, would you consider building me a log home?"

Sam began building that first log

home near Henderson, Texas in late

1974. Sam's first secretary was

Travonda Nicholas, who later became Travonda Satterwhite

Why do we not use locally grown Southern Yellow Pine or Eastern White Pine for our log homes? It sure would make our lives simpler!

High and Dry

Why do we not use locally grown Southern Yellow Pine or Eastern White Pine for our log homes? It sure would make our lives simpler! We believe, first and foremost, that log home logs are best if they are dry. (To us, dry means below 17% moisture content all the way through!) Southern Yellow or Eastern White Pine are not found in commercially adequate stands of dry dead trees, so they would have to be sawed green, then dried in a kiln. That process causes twisting and difficulty in getting the heart of a timber dry enough for our standards.

By using dry wood, shrinkage has already occurred. Most wood species shrink from 7-12% in size as they go from their green state to dry. In a log cabin, that shrinkage is multiplied as settling in a log wall. Imagine of 8 courses, or layers, of logs each shrinking an inch after your cabin or house is built. The result is a wall system that has huge gaps between the logs or a wall

that is 8 inches shorter a couple of years later! By using pre-dried logs, almost all of that shrinkage and subsequent settling, has already happened prior to construction.

off the trees, strangling the nutrient flow. These insects feed on the cambium layer under the bark and are not interested in the wood underneath.

In the inter-mountain West, bark beetles have ravaged huge forest of Lodge-pole Pine and Engelmann Spruce. The Spruce grows high in the Rockies, beginning in the Aspen band and growing up to the tree line. There the growing season is short (so is the logging season!) So, trees grow very slowly. Growth rings are very close together so the wood is very stable. We harvest this bug-killed timber which in most cases has been standing at 10,000 feet for years so that it is dry to the heart, or almost. The bark beetles that kill the trees literally mine the bark

Our Utah mill is located (not accidentally) in a high desert at about 5,200 feet, so that Spruce lumber not already dry can easily be air-dried to our desired moisture contact. This type of wood has been Satterwhite's source since 1974. It has served us, and you as a homeowner well.

Satterwhite Log Ho111es and Stewardship For all these years, Sattel"W'hite has prided ourselves in using dead-standing Engelmann Spruce, found in the higher elevations, for our house logs and many components of our houses.

Conservation and Commitment

Most of this Spruce is located in our

National Forests and managed by the

U.S. Forest Service. As we perform

our logging and hauling, we are under stringent regulations to protect the

land, watersheds, and residual timber

for the good of us all.

Efficiency

By logging dead timber, weights are greatly decreased both for

hauling logs to the mill and hauling finished products to the jobsite,

thus more board footage is

moved per truck, decreasing fuel consumption per board foot and

saving transportation cost. We are conservationists who believe

that the resources God has blessed

for decades to come!

Properly built log homes are extremely energy efficient, although a strict application of "R" factor would make one think otherwise. "R" factor determination is a lab test which does not take into consideration real world factors that can dramatically alter thermal performance. "R" factor was derived by the fiberglass insulation industry to tout their products. You wouldn't expect them to devise a test to make other products to look better than theirs, would you?

Energy Efficiency Text book "R" factor rating gives wood only about 1.25 "R's" per inch of thick ness, but actual comparisons of walls 10 1953CXl_Satterwhtte_TXT.indd 10

Pick the Purchase Plan That's Right for You Three Ways to Buy

You can purchase your Satterwhite home in one of three ways: The Constructed Shell, the Material Package and the Log Package. There are unique benefits to all three so read the following passage carefully to decide which plan is right for you.

OPTION t. We Build It.

Building a log home is usually easier and faster than constructing a conventional home, but it is different. Satterwhite Log Homes offers a con structed shell option in most southern states.

A constructed shell built by a Satterwhite crew offers you both the co nvenience and the securi ty of using professional crews, who have experi

ence erecting a log shell from the foundation up.

Constructed Shell Components

• Labor - Our experienced crews construct your dried-in shell • Foundation with (some restrictions) ■ Roughed-in plumbing (some restrictions) • Log walls • Roughed-in Electrical (in log walls only)

• First floor framing and sub-flooring (only for wood foundations) ■ Interior partition wall framing

• Roof framing system • Decking and synthetic felt paper underlayment ■ Shingles (Fiberglass base, composition), no labor • Gable framing and siding

OPTION 2. You Build it.

If you're beyond our constructed shell range or if you're a confirmed do-it-yourselfer, our comprehensive Material Package is right for you 1 Satterwhite is also proud to work with your local contractor. Our back-to-basics construction techniques make this a popular option for many of our hands-on customers. The Material Package also gives the cost-conscious the advantage of Satterwhite quality at a great price. What's more, with our vast inventory of building supplies, Satterwhite Log Homes can ship your

Our dead spruce logs are "bucked" or

cut to length and carried by articulated loaders to the sawmill infeed deck.

They are advance to the carriage where our sawyer quickly assesses what can

be produced from logs that may range

in diameter from 6" to 36''. He must

requirements. The rectangles he cuts with an old-fashioned circle saw mill

proceed via roller conveyors through or past edgers and slab recovery saws to

become "cants" or timbers destined to

be house logs, decking, siding, rafters,

other finished products.

Those "cants" which will be house logs are moisture tested, every piece! If

they meet our dryness standard, they are marked as "dry" and packaged

to proceed to the planer mill. If they

almost, but not quite meet the standard, they are stacked on our drying yard in

a desert environment, and they wait

for weeks or months to be retested. If

they are wet, they immediately return

through the mill to be sawed into thin

ner lumber products, so they can never become a log in the wall of a home.

Planing

The dry cants are moved to the planing mill, where they are end trimmed, then

go through a massive 16,000-pound

planer which "sizes': cuts tongues

and grooves, and shapes or "profiles" the exterior faces of "D" or Smokey

Mountain logs. At this point {and at other

previous points) grading occurs. Our

graders are certified through TPI {Timber

ing agency. After passing strict criteria,

A Few F.A.Q.'s If reading a brochure from cover to cover is not something you can find time to do. We have tried to hit the high spots with the most commonly asked questions and their answers. ''How are the electrical and plumbing installed?"

Most electrical wiring is run behind

the interior window and door trim.

Holes are drilled from these openings

to electrical outlets and switches

and from tops of windows and doors

through upper logs to the attic. Wire

is pulled through, leaving enough of a tail for an electrician to run to the

nearest junction box.

Want an outlet in the middle of a

log wall? The wiring can be hidden between logs as the walls are being raised.

As with a conventional home,

plumbing is installed in interior stud partitions.

• Porches provide protection from

the elements, while adding extra outdoor living space.

• Minimum three-foot overhangs on

exposed log walls offering addition

al protection from moisture and the

sun for a lifetime of beautiful log

home living.

• Site your home within existing

trees for shade and protection from damaging ultraviolet rays.

More Frequently Asked Questions Porches provide protection for the logs, add an energy efficiency benefit, and offer great spaces for outdoor living. We suggest 36" overhangs for walls not covered by porches. Depending on your homes exposure and location, we suggest periodic treatment of the log surfaces to insure a beautiful home for years to come.

'Where is your wood found, and what species is it? Our house logs originate in the higher altitudes of the Rocky Mountains. Most of our logging is in National Forests. The U.S. Forest Service monitors our logging practices. Harvesting dead timber clears the way for replanting. Our manufacturing plant is in Gunnison. Utah. Engelmann spruce is our primary source of wood. The logging site may also yield an occasional Lodge-pole pine.

'What is the moisture content of your logs? Satterwhite logs are moisture tested at several stages during our man ufacturing process. Our grading agency requires 16.9% or less. Our dead-standing timber is usually in the 12% to 15% range.

How much settling or shrinking should I expect in the walls? Wood is a naturally porous material that shrinks and swells. Using dead-standing timber keeps such movement to a minimum, so that set tling allowances are unnecessary.

What about bugs and termites? Termites are rarely a problem, though it is a common concern. As with a conventional home, pretreat the foun dation and have periodic inspections. And keep the bottom courses of logs free of moisture and soil.

Choosing a noor Plan for Your Dreazn Log Hoe Satterwhite's standard floor plans are a starting point

for your log home adventure. One-of-a-kind Custom plan

Whether you're looking for a rustic

Does your family enjoyed spending

a lot of time outdoors? Be sure

to include plenty of outdoor living

space. Consider multiple use space

such as a carport. Pull the cars

out and you have a great outdoor space for that family reunion or

birthday party.

We really like porches for several reasons. 1. Your maintenance is

considerably less. 2. You realize tremendous energy savings. 3.

Additional outdoor living space. Several of our standard plans

incorporate an attic frame roof

to add second floor areas more

the wide array of finishing possibilities. Special thanks to our Satterwhite

customers who graciously allowed us to photograph their homes.

just wanted to take a few moments to send you a few lines of simply how much we have enjoyed doing business with your company. About seven years ago we started our interest in a “log home” dream and as you know dreams will come true and become reality with hard work, delayed gratification and a written down goal! We’ve driven many miles to find what we wanted and the right log home for our 10 acres. We have search through many log home companies and read through scores of log home magazines. Two years ago we drove up to Longview. My granddad used to always tell me to “Kill them with Kindness” and it seems that is what you folks are all about. In thirty-two years of dealing with people in many different businesses, we have never met anyone like the crew that built our home. These guys were amazing. So, thanks again. It’s been a pleasure! cannot express to you the courteousness and professional ism exhibited by the crew that constructed our home. The lack oftypical 'construction grammar" one normally associates with that profession was appreciated as well. My mother could have been present at the site while they worked and not have been embarrassed as lo the language. (In fact, tbeir mothers would have been proud). People in the area came by and no one had anything but praise for the construction wd our crew!

How To Begin Let Satterwhite Log Homes guide you step-by-step to your one-of-a-kind log home. Establish a budget, then draw your floor plan. We’ll give you a free estimate, advice, and our own special brand of friendly service. Visit Satterwhite Log Homes at our Longview, Texas, headquarters, our Gunnison, Utah, mill or our office in Ellijay, Georgia. We’re open Monday through Saturday. For more information, call any of our locations.

The Purchase Process “O.K.,” you say, “I’m sold on Satterwhite. So now what?” Good question. Purchasing a log home can be a confusing experience. But not if you take it step-by-step. Follow the sequence as shown below for purchasing a Constructed Shell, a Material Package or a Log Order.

Constructed Shell and Material Package Purchase 1. Set a realistic budget and prioritize your wants and needs. This important first step will guide you in designing your home and expedite the purchasing process.

2. Draw your preliminary plan or revise a Satterwhite standard plan. The drawing must be to scale for the estimate to be accurate. (1/4” = 1’ is common.) Indicate foundation and roofing specifications on the floor plan. Will you be using stock or custom windows and doors? (The more information you supply now, the more accurate your bid.) 3. Submit your preliminary plan to Satterwhite Log Homes for a free cost estimate. Don’t forget to include the scale you used (1/4” = 1’ is common). And let us know who you are and how to reach you. (Yup, you’d be amazed at how many folks forget this.) Satterwhite will supply you with a preliminary cost estimate. And we may suggest design modifications or cost-saving features. 4. When the plan is completed, we’ll finalize the floor plans. Now you are supplied with a contract outlining the specifications and materials and/ or labor supplied by Satterwhite Log Homes, as well as the final price. 5. Contract is signed.

6. Secure financing with your lending institution. 7. Prepare your site, i.e., build roads, install electricity, dig water wells and septic system.

Log Package Purchase or Log Order 1. Set a realistic budget and prioritize your wants and needs.

2. Draw your plan or revise a Satterwhite standard plan. Remember, the drawing must be to scale (1/4” = 1’) for the estimate to be accurate. 3. Submit your plan to Satterwhite Log Homes for a free preliminary estimate or use these three simple formulas to estimate the cost of your log package. • Logs. Perimeter (total length of all log walls) x courses needed for 8’ wall = footage of logs. • Caulking. Footage of logs ÷ 20 (yield of one tube) + an additional 30 to 50 tubes (for under the bottom log and around doors and windows) = number of tubes of caulking. • Screws. Footage of logs ÷ 3 (spacing of screws) ÷ by 250 = 158

number of cases of log screws needed. Include the scale of your plan (1/4” = 1’ is common), along with your name, address, home and business phone numbers, fax number, e-mail address, birthday, social security number (just kidding, but we need to know how to reach you). 4. Once the floor plan is finalized, we’ll prepare the working floor plans (if applicable). 5. Final contract is prepared and signed.

Important Note It may be necessary for a customer-drawn plan to be redrawn to insure an accurate bid and workable set of floor plans. There is a nominal charge for this service.

Payment Method Upon signing a contract for a Constructed Shell, a deposit is required. Thereafter, the homeowners makes payments at structured intervals throughout the construction process. A deposit is also required upon signing a contract for either a log package or a material package. The balance is due upon receipt.
