PURSINISM by FLOSA Photos by Deny Mirrorcle

“Pursinism” is a collection of haute couture fashion inspired from the background of the Puritan life in The Salem Witch Trials. Pursinism is a combination of the words “Puritan” and the word “sin”. The purpose of taking the title is the depiction of the Puritans who are filled with sin. This collection will present a collection consisting of four pieces of clothing where in every clothing can be seen the process from the beginning of the Puritans who hold the doctrine of “kemurniaan” until the emergence of a sense of fear and sadness in the event The Salem Witch Trials.

FASHION

This collection is based on the sub-theme “Armadillo” in the theme “Refugium” in the book Trend Forecasting 2016/2017: Resistance. The Refugium theme explains the condition of the world, where in many parts of the world mass transference occurs, either voluntarily by seeking better life opportunities, or forced by war and terror. For the Armadillos sub-theme inspired by the pangolin animal whose leather-skin structure is a protective fortress in a state of danger. From combining main themes with the Armadillo sub-theme, this collection has dramatic, modern, and feminine characters. This collection is intended for women aged 20 to 35 years who are in the upper middle class with adult characters, independent, feminine, and confident. The colors used in this dress really play a role in symbolizing the life circumstances of the Puritans in the story of The Salem Witch Trials, the colors are neutral colors like pale white, gray, and black. Materials used are lightweight materials so comfortable to use, the material is organdy, linen, and tulle. This collection uses the technique of crackle dye materials, embroidery, and sequin applications. Check out Flosa in Instagram @flosaofficial

Tell us a little bit about yourself? I’m a pisces, rising on Sagitarius, and moon in Leo. Intro/extro. Love to supervised things because I pay attention to the details. Devoted adventurer but actually an escapist. Worship comfort, seeking hydrate and cannot live without moisturizer. I choose summer over winter. What sparked your interest in fashion? For me, fashion is not just about the superficial, impressive and stylish matter. It’s the expression to life.

What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into your work? The business & management of fashion. At the moment it gave me more insight to how I value my self and my work time flow and how it can be effective for everyone. How do you stay updated on the current trends? Always open by communicative, socialising by meeting old and new people. Dig something from the internet (don’t love internet too much but don’t hate it too much too).

I like it when the trends are constantly changing, for me keeping up with them is not exhausting, but not everyone should follow them trends though. The constant change is called trend and fashion is what trends always keep up.

Does having a label affect your styling in any way? Of course. My labels are reflection of my style, what I believe. And its naturally goes well together.

I just love the idea of fashion: the challenge and the idea of being different. As human, everyone is different and unique, celebrate it with fashion!

Can you describe your personal style & the the style of you label? Comfort. Slightly basic & classic. And laiiidbaaack..

Trend is sometimes sounds overwhelming but keeping up with it is challenging and kept us moving and be progressive with the nowness. Keeping your eyes peeled opens!

Are there any types of clothing that you avoid wearing/styling? For now, nothing. You can literally wear anything include the shitty one but when it comes with styling you still can be stylish and swag it on.

What made you take fashion more seriously and make a career out of it? Simply its the one I enjoy a lot to play with. At times, it feels more like a part-time job. Are you self taught or did you study fashion design? I am Kriya Tekstil at Institut Teknologi Bandung graduated: its 40% fashion and the rest is the great knowledge about the world of textile.

INTERVIEW

Can you tell us bit about your self? Well, this is a complicated question honestly, I’m currently living in bali, making tattoo, trying to enjoy and understanding life – simply with a lot of questions in it. How did you become involved with the tattoo world, and what was your apprenticeship experience like? Started with tattoo workshop in Bandung and I began to collect some infos about tattoos and apprenticeship, and finally I moved to Bali for one year apprenticeship, then I got a way to start enjoying my tattooing activities as a therapy to myself nor this is what gives me pleasure – a playful yet serious thing of marking the skin.” What are some of your inspirations? Mostly from people, daily life, music, book and also art. Has there been awkward moments with clients who may have different religious views from you? Hmm, no, I don’t think so, I try to avoid debating or starting conversation about religious view because it’s too personal, nor I respect everyone beliefs, as simple as it is. What are some of your favorite pieces that you’ve created? I don’t have any, really, but it’s more into the process of tattooing itself, I take all as a sentimental process – more cling to it. You have such a well-defined style. Has it been copied by other tattooers? I’m not sure and I don’t really care that much, my focus is to concern about developing my works and creating a way to bomb the boredom outta my work in every aspects of it. After all those years in the business, what do you think about the world of tattoo today? Tattoo, now more developing with every character that it has, whether its conceptual or non-conceptual, business or collective or whatever you called it, I think nowadays tattoo is more like a tool to express something in both sides, as tattooers or as a tattoo collectors – its personal, if you want to look a tattoo as a design perspective, than it’s like that, or if you want to see and give it a value for tattoo like it’s criminal perspective, then it is like that, for me it’s more like this quote “every tool is a weapon if you hold it right”, and once again its personal, every person gave the meaning to this and I always stick to mine.

Do you think it’s important for tattoos to ‘mean something?’ For me it’s more into history and memory, I can tell all the stories behind my tattoos, they are mean something, yes, some important but some are not that important but the memories. Where do you find your inspiration? Everywhere How many tattoos do you have? 21 and I’m sure it’s gonna be more What has been the highlight of your career? When I want to work I work, when I don’t want to, I just stop, it means I control my work If someone is thinking about having a tattoo - what tips/ advice would you give? Until finally switch to digital drawing. So learn more when using digital media. I start with my five years old smartphone to draw and still use it;) How did you make the decision to pursue art as career? It’s all by accident. Starting from the frequent posting of the image to Instagram. Until there is one beauty product brand that is interested in my drawings, and offer illustration project for them. From there start came some other offers. Because I’m actually a dentist, the art of illustrating this picture I’m working on the sidelines of my practice schedule aja. Would you describe the artistic experience as a spiritual one? I find my self in the highest level of enigma every time I draw. I think that is quite a spiritual experience. Will there be plans ahead with your art project? to hold exhibits maybe? Wow really. But the wealth is so much that I still have to learn and prepare for that stage. How do you think being a woman shapes your vision as an artist? Being a woman makes me appreciate beauty in every single flaw and detail in every little thing. That’s why I mostly draw woman. Do you have any advice for aspiring artist? Practice practice practice! Make your own ‘signature’, so everyone can easily recognize YOU. Sometimes I have to be stupid to be able to see perfection in imperfection (I think my grammar is stupid LOL) What are the benefits and challenges of being a professional artist? The benefit, of course, I can get ‘pocket money’ from my hobbies. ;) Happy for having a hobby but bias for nabung as well. Challenge it sometimes have to make illustrations that do not fit my style, but the request is so, so hard to give ‘life’ for the picture. But I consider all my client’s challenge / request as a motivation to learn more things because basically I’m learning self-taught art and have no base of study in art.

Marshya, thank you for talking with us! Before we get started, let’s talk about your background, how long you’ve been in this Indusrty, and how you got into styling and makeup industry? Hey of course, my pleasure! So I started my career when I was 19, I worked as a Fashion Stylist at Jeune Magazine for a year, after that a friend of mine who was an editor in chief at Juice Magazine asked me to work with him in Jakarta so I decided to move there. I took a chance and worked as a Fashion Editor there for about another year until I got bored of the 9-5 schedule, so I decided to take some side jobs. I really enjoyed doing freelance work because i’m not cut out to do the same activities everyday, so i quit my full time job and started working as a freelancer. I got into film and did about 8 big screen movies . I also styled for music videos, tv series, pre wedding shoots, tv commercials, and did some personal stylist work for celebrities, etc. I literally took every job offered to me . I did that for about 10 years until i got to the point where i needed some fresh air and a break from it. I didn’t take any job s for quite a long time while I tried to figure out what i wanted to do and If I wanted to continue within the industry that I was in. It took me almost a year to figure out what I really wanted . Doing makeup felt right to me, and to be honest I didn’t know much about makeup, I wasn’t particularly fond of it initially but I thought about the similarities between styling and makeup , I thought to myself I could do this, I can study it, so i decided to go to makeup school in New York. I officially started my career as a makeup artist after completing my studies, and still take some freelance styling jobs on the side too.

Where do you get your inspiration from? I guess, life? People around me, on the streets, on the trains, magazines, internet, music, friends and family, all of that plays a part. But I think the biggest inspiration comes from traveling, meeting new people, and learn ing about their culture. Who are some people that have supported & inspired you throughout your career? Def initely my family and friends. My mom and my dad are the coolest creatures in this universe. They’re supportive of whatever I want to do in life. Even when i told them that i didn’t want to continue my University and would come home with a lot of piercings on my body and my mom was cool with it. I remember one day i got my mom’s permission to stay over at school for some religion class but then she caught me at the club drunk and i was only in junior high haha. Of course at first, they watched me carefully until they understood the way I saw life. They kept supporting me, never pushed me to do stuff that i didn’t want to do. I feel so grateful to come from a supportive family that allowed me to use my creativity and my laziness lol. What do you love the most about styling and make up? I can express myself through my work. Meeting new people, making friends, listening to their stories, learning new stuff, getting inspired. 5, Is there any moment when you’re working on set that you want to repeat? Yeah, when i was working as a wardrobe stylist for Arisan 2 film productions. It was hella fun! We went to gili trawangan to shoot some scenes for a week. Working in the small beautiful island with a great team and an amazing view everyday, can’t complain. What are some common beauty mistakes that women make? Wearing too much makeup. Sometimes women think wearing a lot of makeup will make them look prettier, but it actually does the opposite. Especially brides, they go hardcore lol, i mean not everyone, but when you don’t look like yourself anymore, different skin tone etc, it takes away from your real natural beauty.

If you weren’t a stylist or a makeup artist, what else would you do?

Tell us a bit about your travel adventures, which part of the globe have you been exploring?

If you asked me this when i was 16 i would’ve said I’d want to be a DJ haha. Quite embarrassing but I’ll tell you a hilarious story, so i went to a DJ class when i was in high school, i was super into it back then . Later I got quite lazy, so to kill the time I always bought my teacher a burger from McDonald’s to get him distracted so then i didn’t have to learn for the full 2 hours haha . But at the moment, my dream job is to be a host for a traveling show lol I’m still hoping this comes true. Right before i went to NYC for school, a friend of mine who is a host of traveling show called ‘My Trip My Adventure’ hit me up saying that his producer was looking for a female host, i was like....omg why?!

I’m just going to mix the cities, places and countries i’ve visited. So far i’ve been to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, London, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, New York, Paris, Vouvray, Amsterdam, Berlin, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Morocco, Lithuania, Norway, Miami, Arizona, Flagstaff, San Diego, Los Angeles. Talking about the adventures, goshhh.. in each place I’ve experienced many different and extremely thrilling stories . But i guess i have these two places that fascinate me the most , first is this little town in Copenhagen called Christiania, they claim it’s a freetown, free of taxes and run by their own laws, second place is Slab City in California, it’s a place where people can go and find refuge. When you talk about freedom, experimental artwork, free camping for years, you can do or build whatever you want, this is it.

Which city is inspiring you most at the moment?

What do you think about social media nowadays?

Reykjavik and New York have always been so special to me, these cities describe my personalties. Introverted but can be extroverted at the same time. I’m inspired by how these cities grow and the energy they give to the people who live s there. You get inspired everyday , right when you wake up. It’s such heavy energy and vibes . It can be positive or negative, either way this can help you grow and learn more about life. I love how introverted Reykjavik is, once you get there you know why Bjork and Sigur Ross make that kind of music they do. I adore how New York can make people extremely extroverted, people hustle, it’s dirty, noisy but engaging.

Haha i don’t know really, like you know people are crazy about it nowadays, like dying to be seen or to be famous whatever . People can make money through it, i can’t blame them or social media, it’s actually brilliant. Like wow how can you get a lot of money by taking a selfie? Meanwhile people out there are working so hard to get money but still can’t afford anything. It’s mind blowing. I’m not being sarcastic but i guess you know what i’m talking about. One day I went to a coffee shop, what i saw was just bunch of people talking to their cameras or their phones, reviewing the coffee and the spot itself, no one talked to each other, no eye contact, nothing. How pathetic to watch. Some people are acting differently on social media, like when you meet them in real life they don’t act like what you thought they would be. If you’ve ever seen one of the episodes of Black Mirror, well our life is gonna be exactly like that. Actually it’s already happening now. Regardless I’m thankful for social media, it helps things come true easily, it’s a fast way to distribute content, it pushes people to be more creative and innovative.

What other countries are on your travel bucktlist? A lottttt, likeeee zillionsss!! I’m dying to travel around the world. I won’t stop till i visit every single tiny part of this world haha too ambitious.

Do you learn something when you travel?

Tell us about your parents and what you love about them?

I learn so much, it’s insane how much i’ve learned through my trips. I don’t like reading books, i used to pretend that i was into books. So I learn everything through traveling, life, experiences, people, bad things, good things, depressions, happiness, etc. Traveling taught me to be raw and real. I am proud of where I am from. You know sometimes you wish you could live somewhere and be that person, you get jealous of other people’s lives, thinking that liv ing in other countries is better and cooler than where you are right now. Really though, stop complaining or comparing things, you won’t get anywhere. Living in my hometown is the best thing ever. It’s everything. Amazing tasty food, cheap living cost, beautiful islands, mesmerizing mountains, warm weather, ugh! We have the best things anyone could wish for. So just be grateful for what you have right now, and try to appreciate it for what it is, and find the beauty within it.

I’m not coming from a fairy tale family. But my parents are extremely cool. Even though they got divorced but they both are in my life equally and they have a good relationship. My mom is so pretty and stylish, she loves music, she was a dancer, radio announcer, and a drummer. My dad is a don juan haha he’s such a good looking guy, he was also a dancer, he had tons of vinyl in the living room, he’s running his own business now. I just love how they taught me about life, they don’t like traveling that much like i do, but it makes me curious about the world. I feel like I wanna do what my parents don’t really do, just to be different and see things in a new light.

We saw you models sometimes, tell us about it. Well ya sometimes , initially i was just helping my friends out. I still currently do that, just for fun. A friend of mine told me once to put my profile on this modelling website when I was in NY, so i did that, and i got some jobs through that. One day i met this guy randomly in LA, he sent me a message the day after. He asked me if i wanted to model for his photoshoot, he’s a cool photographer, i couldn’t take it that day because i was on my way to San Diego, but we did it anyway a month later when i got back to LA. And we are still friends until this day. It’s crazy how things like this works in life! What do you watch before going to bed? That 70’s show hahah or national geographic, I know people won’t believe it but i do love to watch it. Beach or Mountain? Both, i want to live by the beach that close to the mountain. Do you ever feel homesick when you’re away? Rarely. I guess just once, when i was in NY on my birthday, i thought about my family and friends, i wished everyone was there with me. Finding a true friend can be really tough and rough in NY, people are so unpredictable.

Do you picture yourself living in the city? For now i would say yes, i think i’m just gonna keep moving. I get frustrated when i stay too long in one place. Are you a morning person? Surprisingly yes haha I wake up so early everyday, even when I go to bed super late i’d be waking up so damn early. Is there anything else you would like to achieve in your life? To be a forever happy person. I also dream about moving to the unknown, somewhere far.. later when i get old and grey. Check her out @mdm.mua

How did you grow your Instagram presence? Fashion has always been a thing for me since I was a kid, then I started to share my fashion and #OOTD photos through Instagram in late 2014, when I bought my first semi-professional camera. I did not only post on my account, I also submit them to some local and international fashion account such as @ ootdindo and @ootdmagazine. I grew my connection and self identity there, met new friends who have the same passion as mine, it’s fun. What are your topics of interest? Fashion. Sometimes I do traveling too, I love to wander around and explore new place. What do you post on Instagram the most? #OOTD photos, fashion events. How do you engage with your followers and find the best ways to give them the content they want? I take the advantage of Instagram Story, I think it’s fun to receive my followers respond to my Story, and it’s the easiest way get in touch with them. Analysing their comments on my posts also works. What are some apps you use to edit your photos? Share with us your photo-editing routine! My holy-grail photo filter apps are VSCO (A4, A6 and C6 are my fave filter) and Analog Film Budapest. For an advance adjustment, I can not ask for more than Google Snapseed, it’s like the Photoshop for mobile phone. What’s your favorite part about being a content creator? Well beside free stuffs (haha), I enjoy telling people who I really am, I love communicating, and being a content creator is the most creative way to channel that energy. Every project challenges me to sharpen my creativity, “What’s next? What’s new?”. How do you choose which brands to collaborate with? Brand reputation is very important, it has to be representing my identity too. So far I mostly choose fashion and beauty brands, leisure hotels, and reliable e-commerce. What are some of your tips for maintaining authenticity when collaborating with other brands? Well there will always be different guidelines for every client or brand, but adding your character for both visual or caption content is the important thing to make yourself look as authentic as possible, even when you’re on paid collaboration.

What would your advice for creating a good instagram feed? Do trial and error, with color theme or its order, and don’t stop until you found the feed that suit you the most. You can also use UNUM app to preview your feed, to see how it looks like before you actually post the content to Instagram. What would be your dream job/project/collaboration? Fashion trip to Japan would be nice. How did you develop your interest in fashion? It has always been in me since I was little. As a kid, I always wanted to work as fashion-related professional, call it designer, stylist or fashion journalist. And now that I’m older, I finally found my job as fashion content creator and writer. But i’m not stopping here, I still got so much to see and there’s still more surprises and challenges to come. One fashion item you cant live without? BOOTS!!! How would you describe your personal style? I’m more versatile when it comes to style, I think I have a fashion mood swing syndrome haha. Today I could wear leather jacket, oversized hoodie, ripped jeans, fishnet stocking and military boots and the next day I would fancy a simple denim dress and white sneakers, sometimes I like me better in sporty look. But all in all, giving my personal touch like cat-eye make up and signature hair and ‘fierce gal’ vibe is essential. Any style tips for lazy/busy people? how to look great with minimal effort? Investing on cool outwear or shoes is a life saver for lazy and busy people (well, like me on the weekdays Lol), something that will effortlesly turn your plain outfit into that head-turning look. For instance, you can easily pair your basics with cool handpainted jacket and voila, you’re ready to go! Do you think that your Instagram self affects your offline self What are your plans for the future? For professional wise, being an Instagram content creator makes me more aware of my responsibility in real life. For character, personality, and how I treat people.. Not at all, I’m still the silly Abil who loves her homie. What are your plans for the future? any exciting projects coming up? Plans for the future: travel more, learning to make more video contents. Exciting project coming up in the near future: cruising from SG to Phuket on It’s The Ship event. I can’t wait to go on this business-vacation trip! Check her out on instagram @arrestabila

PUZZLING THE UNKNOWN

Internet culture has brought us to the most unknown place that we have never visited before, by exploring and taking some inspirations that are available on google, pinterest, Instagram or any your favorite fashion source website, we forget the meaning of originality. Originality may not exist, because everything is a copy of copy, is it wrong? We will never know, as long as the audience feels happy, then it is always right. So, is it the side effect of using internet too much? We guess so, and we don’t blame on it, we embrace it instead. This is what we do now to this issue, we get inspired by louis vuitton latest fashion show, we also get inspired by Kanye West (Yeeze) and we also get inspired by the astronaut kind of look that is presented by Sophia Amoruso. But the blur line that we try to give to you, is a symbol of how we captured those things before we present this to you. In other words, you are right, this is the mood board that we looked up to.

GLOSSY LIDS By Marshya D Martha

First step, use your favourite primer & prime your eyes. This is the most important thing before you do your eyes.

Second step is choosing your favorite color. This is where you can get creative. You can mix a couple colors or just use one color and blend in nicely.

And the last step is adding the lip gloss all over your lids. You don’t have to find a specific ones for getting this look. Use your transparent lip gloss or you can also use face oil and put it on top of your lids.
