Nara can you tell us bit more about your self? where do you come from? and where do you live? Hello, my name is Nara Pratama, 28 years old, an advertising diploma and creative director for Voyage Creative based in Bandung. I am now currently lived in Bandung. What led you to a career in photography? do you have formal training in your background?
Spinal cord injury, What happened? I had a motorcycle accident on January 2015 and got a lumbar compression surgery, I was dead from the waist down at first few months and recover some parts of my limbs except my ankles after 31 months. Just a month ago I finally decided to get ankle fusion surgery to treat my foot drop and currently on a physiotherapy program to be hopefully able to walk without crutches.
I started photography since I was in highschool, working on yearbooks from some other highschool for extra cash on my 3rd years. I found capturing beauty and people’s expression was interesting at first. I didn’t have any formal training in it, I started using an old vivitar pocket camera and yashica SLR film.
Any chance of recovery?
Could you name some of the photographers that have inspired you and helped to shape your approach to photography?
Any suggestion to government about facility support or infrastructure to people who got spinal cord injury?
Rodney Smith, Peter Lindbergh, Agan Harahap, and Hengki Koentjoro.
It’s really hard to live as a difable in this country. That is why you don’t see much difable person on the road except beggars. Don’t limit the access, fix the environment! Our technology and some of the facilities made by government wasn’t enough and inadequate. Difable people needs to go out and connect with society. It’s useless to provide bus with wheelchair ramp if there are too many obstacles along the way and we can’t even reach the bus station. Educate people more, and provide better service so we don’t hide in the dark for too long.
What would we find in your camera bag for a typical assignment in studio or on location? A Nikon D810 DSLR, 28mm and 50mm Nikkor lenses. What is your approach to lighting? do you prefer artificial or available light? Available light of course! What style do you mainly shoot? I don’t really have a ‘main’ style, I randomly changed my style because I didn’t have one. I would say everytime I went out on assignment, the outcome would be the improvement of every style I’ve used before, and most of the time it would be emotive portraits. If not photography what would you be doing with your time? Photography experiments, playing tetris, reading books, and doing physiotherapy to increase my quality of life from my spinal cord injury.

What my doctor told me was; yes, but not a hundred percent. I won’t be back as normal as I used to, unless there’s some miracle! I have to live a new ‘normal’ and adapt with disability and limits.
What has been the best advice given to you by another photographer? To be aware of your surroundings, capturing the beauty around you not by the camera, but with your mind. Who is your biggest inspiration? MIT professor Hugh Herr along with his presentation and speech at TED, my father on everything he taught me and for the way he lived, and Crysantium for giving me so much hope on getting back up from wheelchair and walk again.
Photographer
This the point where we ask exciting and absurd questions: If you were suddenly put totally in charge of google, whats the first thing you do? Removing all the hate speeches from the search database. If you were forced to sing every line you speak for the rest of your life, which singer voice would you choose to do it? Leonard Cohen! What you rather not sleep for 3 days or not bathe for 3 days? Save water, sleep more. Not bathe for 3 days would be my answer. If humanity appointed you as ambassador for momentous first contact with aliens how would you introduce our species? We come in peace, and love is our religion. If you were stuck in splat of a book for 2 weeks what book would you pick? The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger, and The Muqaddimah by Ibn Khaldun. See more of Nara Pratama’s work in Instagram: @nrptm

NUSA BAHARI BY ALMAVASTRI SIDHYA
Fresh graduate from Kriya Tekstil, Faculty of Art and Design ITB, Almavastri Sidhya prefers to be known as textile designer rather than fashion designer. After completing an apprenticeship at Cosmopolitan Magazine Indonesia Almavastri she discovered her passion for styling fashion photoshoots. Now residing in Denpasar, Bali, she is developing a brand of bags that will soon be launched later this year. Collection name: Nusa Bahari Nusa Bahari is a collection of ready-towear clothing made using a variety of textile manipulation techniques such as pleating, marbling, and others by pursuing a visual image of water. Water is an element that inspires and feels very close to the designer personally, contains a very powerful but subtle force, can bring peace and coolness into the soul . There is nothing more soothing than taking a walk to the beach, watching the roar of the waves, or soaking in the clear water of the river with the waterfall flowing. Nusa Bahari is a meditative work. The shapes presented in the collection mimics water waves, transparency, coldness, and ripples, and also use a lot of textiles that have transparency like organdy. Almavastri Sidhya’s creations are available to rent for special occasions. She is also does styling for photoshoots and editorials Get in touch with her via email: sidhyalmavastri@gmail.com See more of her works in instagram: @amavach

Can you tell us bit more about your self?
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not tattooing people?
My name is Lidya Adventa, I’m now a tattoo artist and illustrator, I was born in Palembang, South Sumatra 30 years ago and I spent half of my life time in Banding, West Java.
Chilling out and waste my time, daydreaming. Being not having to fulfil any responsibility is a glimpse of freedom.
Growing up did you take art classes or were you self taught? I went and studied Product Design at ITB, and took minors on multi-media and illustration classes also in the same institute. Then, I work as graphic and web designer in Bali for three years before turning into a tattoo artist. What is the most memorable tattoo you’ve created? My most memorable tattoo is for DJ Raff Tracks in Bali, on the first year of my tattooing career. He had this abstract idea for me to turn into geometric tattoos with meaning, that has to define his fondness of techno music and we ended up creating a piece that tells the origin of techno. The tattoo made me want to create more pieces that could explain someone’s personality or phase of their lives.
Who is your favorite tattoo artist of all time? Chiem Machlev aka Dots to Lines, Balasz Bercsenyi, and Ilya Brezinski. What has been your favorite moment in your career, so far? This is year since I learned a lot, as I am still a newbie, and always feel like a newbie in tattooing. Happy to house other two female artists to work in my studio now, it’s called Be No Square Bali. I love meeting and get to know other tattoo artists as I can learn something from them and being inspired. If you could describe your art in one word, what would it be? Maybe, a fluctuation. I always need to know something new, some changes, new additions.
When did you start your career as a tattoo artist?
Any upcoming projects?
I learned tattooing about four years ago, and started to making it my career about three years ago.
We’ll see ;)
What is your favorite tattoo on your body? My favorite tattoo was made by my friend Johannes Sigit, also a dot work tattoo artist. He is based in Jakarta. It’s a combination of my favorite dystopian animation with a femme fatale character called Aeon Flux (don’t watch the live movie because it sucks, I recommend the original MTV version). On the opening sequence, her eyelash eats up a fly, so we combine it with the real carnivore plant aka Venus Flytrap. Who or what influences you? I’m influenced by various aspects in life like music, movies, art and design phases. Mostly Baroque paintings, traditional patterns, sculptures, Neo Brutalist architectures, dreams and nightmares, and others and my own experiences. As long as my brain can translate them visually, then I will be inspired.

INTERVIEW
Why did you decide to choose fashion design as a career? Actually I decided to become a designer because I do not want to take courses that have to do with counting and making long thesis. My interest in the Fashion world started from high school, I began drawing designs of clothes that I wanted to wear. One day my friend gave me the initiative to major in fashion design because the results of my picture. Because there is no thesis and no accounting, I finally decided to try to plunge into the world of fashion. And also because I was inspired by Marc Jacobs who worked for Louis Vuitton and produced works that can not be forgotten. What do you think is a favorite part of being a fashion designer? Being a creative person with no boundaries, creating a design to show to the eyes of the world. Where do you get your inspiration? Inspirations come from any shapes, any places even the most inconvenient things will trigger ideas on my brain. I can not tell how inspiration came to me, but when it did, it
40
SAUVAGE
would be unexpected and it would flow easily through paper and a pencil. That is why I always prepare either a small book or a piece of folded paper and a pencil inside my bag. It’s a must thing to have as designer. When I’m stuck with inspiration, I always listened to my favorite singers to boost up my energy and creativity. For the past one year, I’ve been inspired by Korean culture and their K-POP songs have been a tremendous mood-booster. So, a band called BTS is my MUST LISTEN INSPIRATION PLAYLIST. What skills do you think are important for a successful fashion designer? Let me be super blunt about this, when you’re talking about designers there would always be ‘that’ one moment where you will have your own team and hire other people to help your work. At the end the biggest thing a designer must have is a skill of drawing and coloring. The tricky ability is having to create an image that people want to wear into a piece of paper, most importantly, a willingness to go outside the box, to be uncomfortable with your own design to make it difficult yet easy to see. And a full support from both your parents would have a significant effect.
Fashion Designer
What qualifications are required for a fashion designer’s career? Anyone could be a good designer. It all depends on your willingness to go further and harder. The point is, in becoming a designer there is no qualification as long as they have good vision, creativity and originality. Daring to learn from mistakes is the key that can make designers more advanced. Do you work with computers and digital softwares for designing? I don’t use software for my designing, I prefer do it manually with my hand. How do you keep up to date about fashion? I follow the trend through taking an interest on how people are dressed on the street everyday. Always open Pinterest and WGSN to see nowadays trend, and when I needed more upgrading for fashion I always watch E! Fashion and Fashion TV, or look up on YouTube for fashion show runway.
What do you think about the ethics of work and the type of ethics you believe in working with fashion? I always consider time is money, so I always make sure my team is time-efficient and have a work performance that delivers on time. Say something about your background? I was born in Sleman big city of Palembang, descend from Medan blood and Java blood, since the age of 4 years. Started to love the arts since the age of 12 years and started in theater, until high school began trying to focus in the fashion world. I attended the lesson year at RAFFLES Singapore for 1 year and a half before going to ESMOD JAKARTA, for Menswear specialist. After ESMOD, I continue to take a short course of fashion marketing and branding at Universite de la Mode in Lyon, France.

INTERVIEW
What do you consider most important in the professional aspect of fashion industry? Communication between designer and team work. If there is not enough communication to the team work and designer then the results of the performance will have a big and dangerous impact. So communication between teams is required to provide good performance. What are you working on now? I am currently working on a wedding dress project and also a project for the new season of re-launching DENAD ULIMA with a new image for next year. Motto and quotes your life? THERE IS NO SUCH THINGS AS IMPOSSIBLE. EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE WHEN YOU WILLING TO TRY. How do you describe your personal style? My style is more relaxed and easy to follow. I feel my style is complete when I wear good shoes and okay along with a cool bag. My style is more relaxed but pleasing to the eye. How do you handle stress? Surround yourself with a familiar atmosphere, that is by meeting family and friends, taking a break and going out of town and having fun, trying to escape from reality for a while. How do you deal with arrogant clients? I try to keep myself calm in a situation like this, because if I handle it with emotion then reputation will be damaged, not just my name but the brand that I am in. So as much as I can muffle myself and try to provide a clear and understandable solution and understanding for the difficult customers. How comfortable do you work with other models and designers? Comfortably, because it’s like eating everyday. And to have a great team performance we must be willing to learn to know

other people so that the business runs and advanced. What are the trends you currently see in the fashion industry? Back to oldies. Messages for fashion people? Just be yourself, do not try to be some else. Lead people to follow you not the other way around. What is your goal as a Fashion Designer? To shoot the work of Indonesia in the international arena and to invite people to want to know and know the brand DENAD ULIMA, in terms of its uniqueness and creativity. What’s your favorite part about being a Fashion Designer? Making money from creating your own fantasy. Who is your favorite designer? Marc Jacobs & Alessandro Michele The most proud achievement? Graduated from ESMOD JAKARTA. Before launching my brand officially through ESMOD JAKARTA Fashion Show, one week prior, my clothes got a chance to be wore by Melly Goeslow, she is my favorite Indonesian designer, for her AADC2 Movie premiere in Kuala Lumpur. INTERVIEW
Tell us a little bit about yourself. Hi! My name is Akib Aryou, I’m 23 years old, a final year college student, a bookworm geek from Jogja who is ruled by the moon, who happens to love fashion as much as he loves feminism! What are you working on now? I work as a fashion stylist for commercial, editorial, and personal purposes. I do write contents, too, mainly related to the artworks I’m working. When did you realize you wanted to be a stylist? Actually I only knew that this job exists the first time I was hired to assist a friend of mine! It progressed slowly. I have been doing this since 2013, but for some time, I still was not sure that styling was the perfect medium to express my visions... Until around 2016 when I eventually decided that, “Okay for once let’s not giving any f***, create something I like, and see what will happen after.” So I decided to make some shoots that I really want and turned out it felt good. And people also responded better when I felt good. So that was the moment, I guess, when I knew I love what I’m doing and wanted to keep doing it. 60
SAUVAGE
What are the biggest challenges for you when it comes to your profession? I think it’s putting down my ego. As a stylist, you work with a lot of people: brand, magazine, photographers, models... They have their own visions and interests like we do, which sometimes are conflicting. So becoming a stylist you need to be a good PR, too. You need to communicate well and make sure everyone understand each other. This to make sure that everyone’s interests are accommodated, including mine.; and that needs a lot of energy and patience. That’s the basic challenge, I guess; the other will be convincing brands to lend their collections, LOL. What does fashion mean to you? It’s a very unique form of art. In a way, it is art—a good fashion work argues on a message and presents a form of beauty/aesthetic. But in the end of the day, it’s also about business and industry—it’s something you buy and wear anyway. So, essentially, the clothes are just a product, but it can represent something argumentative that arguably makes it art, too. This intersection is what I think fashion means—it is a medium.

INTERVIEW
Whats your source of inspiration? It can be anything, but I like to dig deep into women themselves. I love gender studies and feminism, I study them in my college, and it’s very interesting to visualize what I have learned into pictures. So that’s basically where I start in my works—I try to portray examples of female experiences or feminine strength to deconstruct society’s perception on women and beauty. I don’t want my works to just portray pretty girls; it has to have deeper message and empowering effect. Other than that, artistically my imagination is influenced by my surroundings: my own Javanese heritage, fantasy literature and mythology I have read, both classical and contemporary arts. A melange of mixed stuffs.
62
SAUVAGE
Can you describe your personal style? I never really label myself into any genre in my works; I think the concept is much important than just limiting myself in genres. I also would prefer to let people interpret my works instead. Yet somehow I think the Javanese roots tend to show strongly in my works. I feel like there’s always this serene strength in my styling. Svelte yet strong feminine figures. It’s very Javanese, as in our philosophy, the powerful is in control of themselves. It’s subtle, but I think it’s strongly sensed. So I guess in a way it’s classical, although mostly spoken in avantgarde approach.

8. What advice would you give to budding stylists? First, argue! In a way, we are a visual artist, so we need a strong concept as the foundation for our works. So make sure that you have a message, an argument. It is so fundamental as it helps you in everything: in styling the clothes so it will visualize your argument, in justifying your style so you can defend and make people understands your art. Second, go for everything to get your vision done, but respect others! A professional working ethic will always help. Everyone will always love to work with someone who makes the work enjoyable yet produces wonderful works.
studies, but until then I haven’t really decided what I will do. Perhaps make an exhibition or work elsewhere to gain more experiences...
Whats next for you? Finishing my thesis—LOL. Well, there are some plans in near future, indeed. I wanted to take a master on fashion related

But I would really like to use this industry to empower people around me. Jogja has so many potentials, yet we lack sufficient institution to incubate and give exposure to these talents, and I wish I can contribute in elevating our fashion industry. So basically that is what all my plans are for: to go back here and develop this city (and country) I love so much with all my knowledge and experiences. Wish me luck!

LA COSTILLA By Enggo PJ
If you’ve been checking your instagram feed lately you might recognise this spot in Bandung that looks like a pink wall with cactus-shaped green led light and cactus garden with small white stones. Taking photos here will make you feel like you’re in Mexico right? Yep, La Costilla Cafe which is located at Jl. Karangsari No.8 Sukajadi It is indeed a spot is minimalist and aesthetically pleasing to the eye and your camera. Anyway you will feel at home here so linger for a while and take some snaps here and there. Furthermore the food menu is diverse and of course delicious so if you eat by yourself, or during a date, or even with a large group of friends and family. If you’re they type of person that likes to hangout in a large crowd and eat pork I recommend the ‘La Costilla Pizza de Costilla’ or if you’re not a fan of pork the ‘Loca Nachos’ is super delicious. If you’re worried about breaking your bank account, the food here are super afforable. So come over and we are sure you will fill your bellies and your camera’s memory card.

Hello! tell us about yourself, Where did you come from?
What’s your favourite medium?
I am from Bandung, mixed with Palembang, Japan, Sunda and Dutch. I grew up here but did an exchange school program in London when i was in highschool, After that I’ve just finished my Bachelor Degree in Art faculty at ITB
Charcoal, its so soft and fragile if you push it too hard it’ll break apart. But it’s really important for me because it’s a direct contact with my skin so when I rub charcoal to paper it transfers my feeling to paper.
Has your college experience impacted your art?
What type of artist are you?
When I was in college there were so many lecturers who helped guide me, I entered into a place where the people were as eccentric as I am, because I’m weird in the eyes of the general public, at the time in ITB I was given positive encouragement for my artworks, because since childhood all I could do was draw.
I developed myself to be an artist that describes feelings. People’s stories can be a muse or inspire me, I’m not looking for high-profile celebrities with fancy stories. I like ordinary people like us, human to human, they are more genuine, because when I talk to people, I can relate to them and then I become that person when I draw.
How long have you been drawing? how did you start? I’m self taught artist since young, My mom is the reason I picked up drawing. I used to have a speech defect that made me stutter a lot, and therapy was not working. My mother almost surrendered but then she tried something different, she bought me paper, pencils, markers and said “when you need something just draw it”. But that was a challenge on it’s own. For example if I wanted a fork, I had to draw it but my mom still couldn’t understand what I wanted, it was frustrating I had to keep practicing until the image could be recognized as a fork so she could understand.
When I want to draw Abil (@Arrestabila), I would chat with her and take in all of her the vibes through her stories, after that the inspiration would flow, Then when I open my paper I then become Abil. Has feelings for example “love” affected your artwork in any ways? Love is not just about the butterfly-in-your-tummy feelings, it’s content also carries feelings of sadness, jealously, anger… there are a lot of thoughts inside of it. Even God said love is pain because in love we devote everything. Because there are too many aspects in love itself so I take sombre aspect: the tears. Do you often exhibit your work? I’m not too keen on showcasing on galleries, I prefer to open exhibition in a public space, for example I choose to exhibit my art in a coffee shop because there are many people who have a calm frequency. The people could just enter, enjoy they artwork with a cup of coffee and relax. We need tranquility, thats why I stay away from the usual art galleries. I also need a place to meet people because their stories are important for me. And contrast is the only coffee shop that is open with art, the real art. One day I arrived here, I sat with my friend and ordered cup of coffee and the owner approach me then said “are you an artist” and I said “yes I draw”, then he said “come let’s do an event”. It’s such a coincidence, before I was stuck and didn’t know what to do because when I really wanted to do an exhibition no one responds, and then I come here just to chill and an exhibition falls into place.

Do you sell any of your artwork? No I cannot put a price on my existing artworks, but I accept commissions. The image of Audrey Hepburn is an important work for me, so I will never sell her and I have certain hours for people to see her, maybe it’s a bit arrogant if I say this but she’s alive and she has feelings. She was once displayed in Contrast Coffee when I had a live-drawing event. After the drawing is complete, the picture remained on display. But one day the owner of Contrast Coffee called me to come over, as I arrived the picture has been taken down, and I assumed the worst like my drawing was somehow damaged. He told me that there’s water coming out of her eyes as if she was crying so I used a white light to inspect my artworks, maybe I forgot to seal it and water could’ve seeped through? But it turns out that the image was sealed and dried, so its like magic. So after that incident all the pictures in my studio started crying, there are three pictures that I did not expose in public because they are still crying until now. 80

There was once a time an old couple with a visited the coffeeshop where Audrey was displayed, The couple had a sixth sense they said “your Audrey is alive and whispered to me” When I drew ‘Mantra’ my lecturer said “you know what, when I saw your drawing yesterday I got very weird dream. Like a woman and she said I’m alive!” I actually do not want to give problems with my work, and since that incident I had a friend from church who gave me a recording of a prayer to be played into my pictures to clean their aura. Does your drawing have negative effect to people? One day my mom was alone in my home and that she just walked by my studio and then she felt a small chill air down her neck, “It’s a poltergeist” and my mom said it happened more than once. My curator said “everytime I see your drawing I get f*cking exhausted” And then he looked at my 80 percent finished picture, he then sat down and said he was tired.

Are you afraid of your art? No, I love them because I’m thier mom. At first I was afraid that something might happen again, because I myself have never directly experienced any of these except in my dreams. Especially my first exhibition, right before it was about to start the lights suddenly went off, and I frustratingly grabbed the candle and scolded my artworks “please kids don’t be like this! you’re embarrassing me!” LOL. How many “kids” do you have?
Your experience is so interesting & mysterious. I’m glad you shared this with us. Actually there are some who want to interview but I rejected because I do not want my personal life to be misinterpreted. Because I’m self-aware that my story and my personality is unique and not for the general public. But when Sauvage Magazine contacted me, for some reason I agreed, my intuition and my heart said “do it girl” See more of Edrike Joosencia’s work on Instagram: @edjoosenc
There’s three. Mantra, Sulham and Atman. Mantra is magic spell, Sulham is “I am” and then Atman is “I am the universe” It’s like repetition I am and I am the universe. And to handle each artwork is different, one of them requires me to throw salt. So how do you explain whats been happening with your artworks? I’ve been constantly looking for an explanation but until now I don’t have any answers as to why all this is happening. SAUVAGE
