casa Jijona
designed with: Devin Wesselius Lynn Ewalts Sven Berg Wouter Hesterman
_developed during a one-week workshop, the project concerns a house for a northern european retired couple at the western side of Jijona (Xixona), a small village in the province Alicante surrounded by several mountains. The plot has a beautiful view over the landscape and authentic houses of the village. The village has a verity of facilities that are easily accessible by foot or car. Its cascading design generates an interesting dialog with the surrounding landscape that responds to the environment. The experience of living in the house is aimed to create different stages of views and a continuous airflow between interior and exterior. Its design gives an abstract structure to the wise landscape that surrounds the building site. _standing on top of the building and looking down the staircase, it is possible to see the villa at the left side, the perforated facade at your right and a small part of the landscape just in front of it. When walking down the staircase towards the front door and entering the building, the user discovers a
bit more of the landscape. If walking down the stairs to the living room, inside the villa, the user discovers even more of the landscape. In the end when standing at the deck the user has a wide panoramic view over Jijona and the surrounding landscape. _the staircase is located at the south of the villa and serves as a buffer zone. In the summer , when the sun is at its highest point, the overhanging roof blocks the sun from hitting the south facade. In the winter when the sun is at a lower point, the sunrays reaches the wall and heat it up. _the entrance to the villa is a staircase on the highest part of the site. One level down there is the front door to the building itself. Here are the flexible working spaces located. These rooms can be easily transformed in multiple guest rooms. At this floor is a bathroom located, which is possible to enter from two directions. _the master bedroom is located at the lowest level and orientated to the north side. It is directly connected to the living space, which consists of the living room and the kitchen. The entrance of the deck from the living room is made by sliding opening of panels
and create an open space. _the house is built with traditional materials, which can be easily found in the surrounding environment. Constructive walls are made of concrete and finished with white stucco plaster. The roof is made of ceramic tiles, like the local houses. Aluminium is used for the perforated facade at the south side as well as for the shutters at the east and north side of the villa. _the whole concept of the building was developed focus on the efficiency of the use of rain water for cooling and humidifying the interior spaces and the adequacy of the house geometry for profitting natural wind. _the thermal analysis of the project was calculated based on the upper level bedroom, which is the less opened space of the building and even so the results for temperature and air renovation were enough to fulfill the needings of a house in south Spain. _the project was awarded as the First honorable prize in the 7th edition of Premio de Edificación Saludable in Alicante, Spain, 2013.

living cube
_ the project of a house for one person or a couple in a cubic space of 4x4x4m was an experimental study about the spatial humans’ necessities and possibilities of placing them in minimum spaces. This project has no site specific but works as a conceptual project for this kind of demand focused in the user comfort. _the dimension does not allow two floors or even a mezzanine due to Brazilian norm of buildings ABNT 15.575 (ABNT, 2007, p. 35) which establishes 2.2m as the minimum height for living spaces. _the project was developed based on the coexistence of two complementary dimensions that structure the living spaces (2.2m) and the warehousing spaces (1.8m). _to the development of the project, traditional aspects of the traditional Brazilian house , such as the conventional space divisions in living room-kitchen-bedroom-bathroom was replaced to a different way of fitting spaces. _this new way of thinking consists in considering the humans’
living cube
acts that take place inside a conventional house and grouping them according to demands they have in common, even if the conventional house regard them as part of totally different places. _ the result of this logic is a construction which is basically divided in two spaces, one of them that embraces social funcions as well as leisure and study necessities, and the other one that embraces intimate functions such as personal hygiene, cloth washing and drying and warehousing in general. _the social space is characterized by a wide-spread opening in inferior part of the cube, which connect the external environment to the house in a way that expends the internal space and decrease the user’s sensation of cloistering. _in the superior part, a gable limits the visual field from the bed and surroundings and make it more pleasant to rest and relax. _looking towards flexibility of the social space into the living cube, a double-height and rotating table of 70 and 90 centimeters, structured in a steel pole, establishes in a flexible way the ambience for food preparing and storaging and the space for reading.
_the accordion door allows the connection between the internal and external environments according to the user’s intention who can entirely open it and “enlarge” home or close it and increase the value of privacy. Besides, it allows a well-spread opening that should require large spaces with conventional frames door. _the access to superior portion of living cube in which the bed takes place was also developed in a no-wasting space stair based in a stair developed by a famous Brazilian inventor called Santos Dumont (1873-1932). _it was not the purpose of this project to sugest that humans should live in compact places, but it was a way of developing architectural investigations for fitting housing elements in a minimum space. _the intention of these investigations was to serve as a basis structure for the development of not only house projects, but also other programmes demands. _the concepts developed by this project can be visualised in other projects in this portfolio.

Edusp bookstore
Edusp bookstore
_Edusp bookstore is located in front of São Francisco Faculty of Law and its Square, which is used nowadays for parking. _the concept of the building is trigged by the perception of the social and historical relevance that this place has in downtown, enabling direct connection between São Francisco Square and São Bento Square through São Bento street. _once one of the most expressive streets in downtown, São Bento outline was preserved by a pedestrianized crossing making the bookstore take part of the surrounding mass of buildings. _another preserved aspect was the great open space and the existing trees in the square. _the moderate declivity was emphasized by a ground leveling that enables to design two different levels in a place that would commonly be used as one only level.
Edusp bookstore
_the building structure stands on 30cm diameter columns that support reinforced concrete flat slabs. _the columns are also the axis of bookshelves that reaches the ceiling from the ground, making them seem to support the superior concrete volume. _the bookshelves defines the spacial configuration of the bookstore, making it flexible and allowing different uses of it, by a design process that take users into account. Besides it gives emphasis to the main element of the building: the books. _the sunlight is also regarded as a fundamental physical element of the project. _two openings on the rooftop makes the sunlight works, according to solar dynamics, as two lines that flood into the bookstore levels by a central atrium and stimulate the users to pass by specific places.
pedro sávio jobim pinheiro
structure in reinforced concrete made in loco with 30cm diameter columns hidden in the bookstore shelves and 20cm slabs
two “light lines” keep the publics’ attention and make them go to specific places at the bookstore, in which can be placed special products
bookshelves include hidden columns in its pivot, giving to the users the sensation of fluctuation of the solid concrete volume that is above them
declivity is emphasized, profitting the natural relief by using it to design two different floors.

port in Cantinho do CĂŠu
port in “Cantinho do Céu”
_this project of port for the south urban area of São Paulo, in a place called “Cantinho do Céu” (piece of sky) was developed with the objective of designing a public building based on the public policy “Mananciais” (Fountainheads) to preserve natural water sources for the metropolitan area. _the urban area where the project is located was illegally urbanized on the border of Billings fountainhead and now is a hot point for public interventions with the purpose of requalifying it and preserving the quality of provision water to the city. _the intention is to aggregate the project of this port to the ensemble of buildings already designed in the same place by the architect Marcos Boldarini and the engineer Melissa Matsunaga, ensemble that represented Brazil in Venezian biennial in 2010 and in Rotterdam biennial in 2011. _the proposition of this port in “Cantinho do Céu” stands for a more efficient public transportation in the area, which is now insufficient.
port
_the building was developed according to the existing deck designed by Marcos Boldarini where collective activities take place (image on the right) and to the park that extends for 7km long. _the building has both levels placed between the water level and the urban level, keeping the visual field of the inhabitants and being the continuation of the natural land and the existing deck. _the first level under the land level is where administrative rooms, information offices, ticket offices and commercial rooms take place in a permeable and flexible space. _in the water level there are two loading ramps to passengers boats and waiting spaces to the travellers. _the structure of the building is based on “V” reinforced concrete frames that remit to the natural declivity of the border and go towards the horizon as a metonymy of the important social impact of the recent modifications in the area.

emergency bathroom
emergency bathroom designed with: Ana Paula Costa Daniel Locatelli Larissa Oliveira
_the Project of a bathroom for emergencies is based on the constant inundations in Jardim Pantanal, a neighbourhood in east zone of São Paulo, where the number of unhoused people reaches 1700 per year. _the equipment was designed to be installed at Paulo Kobayashi school, one of the only places that don’t suffer with inundations in the region. Considering the actual capacity of the building to host unhoused people, the ensemble of equipments can attend 800 people per year, supplementing the existing bathrooms in the school for a period of two weeks. The idea is that the school can reuse them for the period when there is no public actions to solve the problem definitely. _the concept of the project is supported by racionalization of potable water, that can be accompanied by the user each time the equipment is used, whether using the sink, the toilet or the shower. Each one of these activities can be monitorated by glass reservatories that permit visual control of the water expense. _a module is composed by two similar bathrooms that can be
emergency bathroom
joined in order to allow the use for six people (three of each gender) at the same time. The water supply and the sewarage system can be easily connected to the school system due to the satisfactory dimensions of the school water reservoir and the possibility to used the systems of dischanging pipes of the building. _the design of the equipment was also thought to be edgeless and more hygienic than conventional bathrooms. Its composition is basically a futuristic shape made of white rough rubber structured by round steel frames, what facilitates cleanness and maintenance of indoor ambiences. _inserted in the equipment, a little pneumatic stacking machine help users to move the object to the place where it will be installed. Once installed, the access to the equipment is made by diagonal sliding door connected to guideways that enables the use of the sink, the shower and the toilet at the same time. _this equipment is certainly not the definitive solution to the problem of Jardim Pantanal inundations but it’s a way of garantee minimum possibilities of living in this catastrophic situation.

housing in Suzano

_the project of an urban housing square is located in Suzano, a small city near São Paulo that wil take part of the big project “Hidroanel”, which consists in a connected navigation ring around São Paulo to be concluded by 2030. _the purpose was to urbanize new areas near the outline of “Hidroanel” in a different way of the existing urbanization called “favelas”. _the project is structured in three levels of community spaces: the urban community space, which consists in a great outdoor area in the middle of the square, the condominium spaces based on footbridges between the buildings, and finally the neighbour spaces in which 4-apartments module. These three levels of community spaces stimulate the relationship between the inhabitants and remit to their original way of organizing the housing places. _the buildings are organized in four-apartments module: one of 90m², one of 60m² and two of 75m². not having spacial segregation between the different types of apartment.
_the apartments openings are in accordion windows that allow users to have a wide open house or a entirely close one. This also makes the building reflect the dynamic of life that takes place inside it. _the commercial rooms are located at the ground level and they interact with the street in a very direct way. The openings works the same way as the apartments but in a vertical opening, establishing covered passage to pedestrians. _the public equipment is located in the middle of the housing square and it is in the visual field of all square entrances. Its different shape exposes the formal liberty, concept of the building, as well as mark the city scenario. _the purpose is to have a more integrated city in this new housing complex and this project is a model of urbanization that could take place in the surrounding squares.

housing in Sé Square
_among bling walls and urban voids, São Paulo downtown reflects the reality of spontaneity responsible for making it one of the most plural areas of the city. Blind walls are more than simply walls without openings, are separations for the eye and for the touch as well as urban voids are more than unoccupied places, are places where the city growth does not reach, concretization of avoided experiences. _the dichotomy between the location of goods and services and the location of housing in the city of São Paulo exemplifies the most in the case of Sé square, making them one of its biggest symbols. While the region concentrates the majority of goods and services, it is almost completely empty of inhabitants. Fulfilled by entrepreneurs, managers, merchants and tourists all day long, the square at night becomes the house of totally different people. Beggars and homeless people are the users of the same place used by businessmen at day, exemplifying the case of abandon and neglect of which the centre of São Paulo is victim. _the location of the project is in a plot at Sé Square
housing in Sé Square
characterized by having 60% of its length with 4.5 metres width. This width equals 3 average architecture studio desks. Squeezed between two buildings, one with 12 floors and another with 4 floors, the housing building here proposes a different regard towards São Paulo downtown by its open ground floor and the emptiness of its central area. _the buildings are composed by stores gallery in the ground floor, composing an unity with the surrounding buildings and attracting the customers to the interior of the plot. _the rest of the pavements are used for housing which group is composed by 5 types of apartaments: one of 30m², two types of 60m², one of 75m² and one of 90m². Each one responding to a different investigation. _the key words to describe the project are permeability and amplitude, which guided the project to investigate spatial relationships and several ways of housing. _flexible spaces were one of the most important concerns of the project as well. This way the buildings are characterized by
its accordion openings, allowing different configurations of the apartments in a simple way and revealing to the exterior the living dynamics of its interior. _the bathrooms were also focus of discussion as they work as articulations of the housing space, especially to intimate ambiances. _the living room was rationalized by its activities and separated, when it is possible, in two different spaces: the television room, less exposed to daylight, and the living room itself, nearer the façades. _the grass at the middle of the plot is incorporated to the building by a big vertical garden that goes through the buildings and visually amplifies the belonging feeling of the apartments. _the vertical circulation, composed by a block of stairs and elevators work also as a visual barrier between the apartments in the west building, enlarging the private visual field and contributing to the building ventilation. _the project represent a view of how it would be if the urban voids of São Paulo were fulfilled by inhabitants to use its goods and services, contributing to the development of the city.
_official information: Total area/Plot area: 4.1 Occupancy: 59% Permeability: 19.6%. Circulation area: 20%

_the purpose of this project was to balance different design values in order to better develop the spaces of the school in Jordaan, Amsterdam. _the designing goals were to offer inviting and pleasant spaces not only to students but also to teachers, employees and community, as well as spaces not only for studying, but also to be flexible to several pedagogical activities. _the school could be divided into two in order to describe their concepts. While the north school is a more closed building so then the parents of the younger kids can feel like their children are in a safe and second-housing place, the south school is a more independent and autonomous. The concept for the north school is safety and protection, while the concept for the south one is autonomy and discovery. This is reflected in the proportion of transparency and opaticity of the buildings as well as its position. Especially the south building was developed based od Mies van der Rohe buildings Crownhall, in Chicago, and Fansworth house. _the form of the building, according to the ages of the users,
school in Amsterdam
assume different shapes, the school for the younger children is more introspective and in front of residential buildings while the school for the older ones is more opened and allocated in a more independent area. _to comply the different functions of the school, the project is based in a module of 1.5 x 1.5m and this module (and submodules of 0.75m is capable to translate several spaces, from bathroom boxes for kids (0.75m) up to classrooms (7.5 x 9m). This modules also complies the construction method of steel deck, present in the majority of the project. _the building is according to the surroundings, however proposing some different spatial conditions. An example is the big living space in south school that is behind a very solid and rhythmic building, whose rhythm is due to the surrounding buildings. _due to the use of a single module that structures all the spaces, as a consequence, all the construction elements seem to follow one single order that guides the complexity of the building group of elements.
_light is working in the project in order to bring new experiences for the people that passes by Elandstraat in a way that the commonly shaded street is replaced by a sensible ray of natural light that passes through the buildings and reaches the street as an analogy of the school that brings new possibilities towards the future of any society. In order to achieve this goal, the main south block is a transparent glass-box aspect, allowing the light to pass through it and reach the grass ground in front of the school, where students can profit the sun in spring and autumn, as well as Elandstraat, giving emphasis to the plot. _the activity of designing in the city of Amsterdam imposes some extra challenges due to the fact that the centre of the dutch capital is a very homogeneous concerning the building environment. Thus, alignments, heights and rhythms are essencial architectural resources for the local architecture and these itens were put into account when developing the school project in Jordaan, a traditional neighbourhood of the city.
