Welcome to Sweden

S W EDEN SEL EC T ED

pring marks the beginning of a magical time of year in Stockholm. Evening is bright as day, the evanescent night is a shimmering dusk, forests and parks blossom, peninsula, lakes and sea beckon. We have been spoiled by our proximity to the outdoors and the laws that preserve it for our enjoyment, allowing us to hike, camp out and pick berries wherever we please. Sweden is a happy alliance of countryside and metropolis, a close encounter with clean air and water and untamed nature regardless of where you are. The Royal National City Park (www.nationalstadsparken.se) meanders like a green oasis through Stockholm and the entire country is full of preserves and heritage sites. Why not enjoy an älgsafari (moose safari) in Tyresta National Park, only 10 minutes from downtown Stockholm and commune with wildlife. Sarek in the north of the country is an untouched preserve with scenic hiking trails for the seasoned adventurer. Neighboring Padjelanta is easier to navigate for us ordinary mortals. Reindeer, golden eagles, bears and wolves lope along the far-flung hillsides and plateaus. But Sweden is not simply a labyrinth of forests, mountains and lakes. The attractive cities offer everything from glistening shopping centers to comfortable accommodations and superb cuisine. The country is a Mecca for food lovers. Stay at a small independent hotel, historic palace, national or international chain. Swedish meatballs, reindeer and pancakes are as traditional as you can get, while the new cuisine is truly revolutionary. Paul Svensson at Fotografiska put together a concept that won him a citation for the second-best museum restaurant worldwide. Mother by Melker Andersson is an international dining room that spotlights natural health and uncontaminated ingredients. Ringen, a small indoor shopping center in south Stockholm, features a unique food theater where owners of top restaurants from around the country pack lunches for office workers in a hurry and concoct delicious fast food at affordable prices. Welcome to our European capital par excellence and prepare your taste buds for an unforgettable experience.

"Oasis in Stockholm" Where to eat and drink. Pages 78-79

Even after living in Sweden for over 10 years now, it continues to amaze and pleasantly surprise me. I was born and bred in South Africa; I travel the world and am very blessed to call Sweden my home for so many years. I’ll be honest, I didn’t know that much about this country I now call home as I was growing up, but I am kind of glad I didn’t. To discover Sweden not only as a tourist PHOTO - CONNY FRIDH/IMAGEBANK.SWEDEN.SE but as a citizen these last few years, I have realized that my new home humbly impacts the world in so many inspiring ways. That the Swedish lifestyle is a way of life I hope many can learn from. Through this magazine, we try to highlight as much as we stylishly can; the cool stuff, people, experiences, hidden gems you need to know about. It’s impossible to squeeze it all in because well, everything Swedish is pretty much cool. The seasons here affect people greatly. It’s no surprise that the winters are long but it’s SO “mysigt” (cozy). It’s also when new ideas are born, songs written and innovative creative hibernation starts, where sleeping ideas are grown and brewed and passions are nearly perfected. Summer and fall is on our doorstep and we reward our hard, creative work with enjoying the magic of brighter days. The days are lighter, long late nights spent outdoors and the appreciation of that natural Scandinavian simplicity such as nature and the outdoors that I too now view as life’s luxuries. Life is incredible! If you are lucky enough to stay over the fall, you’ll witness a magical transition in the environment, nature, style, food, experiences, décor and more. We cover most of it in this edition and we only recommend quality by our favorites. Out of Sweden, many innovators, artists and inspiring entrepreneurs are born, global game changers such as Skype, Spotify, The Skarsgårds, ABBA, H&M, Ikea, to name a few. We highlight other wave makers, get to know our ray of sunshine, the empowering award-winning Petra Wadström, creator of Solvatten, an innovative solution combining technology and nature’s sun to create clean and hot water. We chat to chef and super nice guy Paul Svensson, an asset to the increasingly growing gastronomic genius of Swedish cuisine and talent and we spend time with Wendy Heijne, innovative fashion designer and creator of Studio Heijne who hails from the Netherlands and now calls Stockholm her home. Our fashion shoot was shot with an incredible team of creative professionals in the unique museum at the Royal Palace, Livrustkammaren (The Royal Armoury). Don’t miss that. We have so much to share with you in this edition. Great gastronomic coverage from Kenneth, traditions and holidays to celebrate, fashion and beauty from stylist Meghan and beauty therapist Sara, escapes to Öland and the Stockholm Archipelago, design tips from Carina, trends from Anqi, culture, travel and lifestyle from me and more. “Njut” (enjoy) our favored selections of Sweden in 98 pages. And perhaps you can take home more than just a souvenir, but instead a way of life that puts the enjoyment of life in the forefront. You know, the Swedish way.

Kerstin Florian started this incomparable line of quality skin care products. Whether you are a woman or man, Sun Protection SPF 30 is perfect for both your face and body. Sun Lotion SPF 20 works wonderfully for children as well. 100 ml, SEK 239. dermanord.se

Peter Thomas Roth’s CC Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is another terrific sunscreen/skin care product at the top of my list. With its mild coloring, it also smooths and moisturizes. Just what you need if you’re looking for natural makeup that promotes a young, healthy appearance. 50 ml, SEK 479. peterthomasroth.com

Summer Essentials The Stockholm Archipelago is one of my favorite places to hang out in the summer, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you will have the chance to experience it at least once. In recent years, I have also discovered the Gothenburg Archipelago. That’s where my boyfriend hails from, and I have to say that it is every bit as lovely. In 9 years as a model, I have learned more about skin care than I could ever have dreamed of. Two years ago, I completed my training as a skin therapist. Wherever I go in my extensive travels, I never leave home without sunscreen, the best friend our largest organ could ever have. Sunlight is the main culprit when it comes to aging skin, pigmentation and melanoma. My boyfriend has finally figured out that sunscreen is vital for men as well and wears at least SPF 30 every day. Follow his lead and I promise you will have the pleasing tan you’ve always wanted.

If you think sunscreen is a messy business and a drag to apply over and over, try this transparent powder for women and men. It also counteracts excessively glossy skin and goes over makeup like a charm. Gloprotecting powder SPF 30, my favorite, is manufactured by Glominerals. 4.9 gm, SEK 499. glo-minerals.com

Last but not least, don’t forget to take care of your precious lips. They need their own protection from the sun. I prefer Resist Lip Gloss SPF 40, a Paula’s Choice product with an appealing luster and SPF 40. Who could ask for more? 8 ml, SEK 279. paulaschoice-eu.com

e start off at Stallmästaregården, the classic inn at Norrtull with a hotel and restaurant that are particularly popular among wedding guests. The water is to our right as we proceed northward. Hagaparken is the king of royal green areas. Gustav III, the Sun King, took the initiative to build it in the late eighteenth century. Inspired by a trip to Italy, he set his sights on a series of English parks around Brunnsviken Bay on the northern outskirts of Stockholm. While Fredrik Magnus Piper was the principal architect, Gustav contributed a number of his own drawings. The concept of an English park is to imitate nature while creating latitude for surprise and drama – unanticipated prospects, buildings that vary in terms of epoch and architectural style. Drama was Gustav's passion. He loved theater and opera, even penned quite a few plays and librettos himself. And he died in the most dramatic possible fashion. A group of noble conspirators assassinated him during a masquerade ball at the Royal Opera.

BY IVAN MATHIAS PETERSSON

We enter Hagaparken through the south gate. A refugee from downtown Kungsträdgården in the early nineteenth century, it has a counterpart at the north end of the park. The exotic little structure that greets us after a while is called the Turkish kiosk, also a work of Piper. Like many buildings in the area, its purpose is to startle visitors out of their reverie in the spirit of English parks. Spectacular Pompeian paintings adorn the walls of the kiosk. Gamla Haga, built in 1772 and Gustav's original residence in the park, is nearby. We turn right towards the water. Another little marvel soon emerges out of the greenery. Open and octagonal, the Chinese Pagoda stares at us with its dragon heads and bells that chime at the gentlest puff of air. An outgrowth of brisk trading between Sweden and China in the eighteenth century, it is adjacent to Japan, China and Vilhalla, three of the most delightful private residences in the park. Brunnsviken Bay is on the left as we continue south towards the Royal Burial Ground – the final resting place of King Gustaf VI Adolf, Queen Louise, Prince Sigvard, Prince Bertil, Crown Princess Margareta and other mem-

18

bers of the Bernadotte Dynasty – on the little island of Karlsborg. The public is welcome to visit from May to August. We turn and follow the northward trail. Vasaslätten offers a hospitable setting in which to grab a snack while admiring the surroundings, the quintessential English park – soft, contoured lawns and giant trees. We pass by Grottan (cave), originally dug out to fill an artificial lake from Brunnsviken Bay. Water from Haga Källa on the other side of the trail was once said to possess healing properties. Here we are at the older of the two palaces for which the park is best known. Architect Olof Tempelman and the king worked together in 1787 to design Gustav III’s Paviljong as a royal getaway inspired by ancient Rome. Among the most prominent northern European works of the period, it is a shining beacon of Swedish art throughout the ages. Louis Masreliez became one of the pacesetters of the epoch after having supervised the interior decorating. Currently uninhabited, the palace offers guided tours during the summer. An adjacent hill features Ekotemplet, built in 1790 for a king who ate outdoors whenever

he had the chance. Originally called Gröna Salongen, it was eventually rechristened in honor of the echoes that reverberate under the arched ceilings. Haga Slott, the other renowned palace, peeks out behind a brand new fence. Designed by Carl Christoffer Gjörwell on behalf of King Gustaf IV Adolf, it received its finishing touches in 1805. Among its illustrious inhabitants has been Carl XVI Gustaf, the current king, who grew up here with his sisters. The palace served as the government's guest residence from the mid-1960s to 2009, providing nocturnal rest and comfort for many world leaders. The very first names in the guestbook are Nikita and Nina Khrushchev. A new era began in 2009 when Crown Princess Victoria moved in with her husband Daniel, followed by their daughter Estelle in 2012 and their son Oscar in 2016. Out of respect for their privacy, public tours are no longer offered. Decisions placing approximately 7% of the park off limits have drawn occasional criticism. Gustav III conceived of Ruinen or Slottsgrunden as the icing on the cake in his vision

of the park, the remnants of his dream of a magnificent palace and museum of antiques on a wide avenue leading to Stockholm Palace. Although the construction project came to a screeching halt when the king was assassinated in 1792, the foundation blends in so well with the fairytale surroundings that nobody would suspect its violent history. The little museum in Koppartälten flaunts a model of the palace as originally imagined. The park has been a greenhouse paradise ever since the days of Gustav III. The orangeries provided grapes and citrus fruit for the royal table well into the dark days of fall. A 3,000 square meter butterfly house with tropical climate and jungle vegetation is part of the complex these days. In addition to hundreds of exotic birds and gossamer winged creatures, an aquarium of sharks and fish may send you scurrying to the cafe for a little coffee and cake that can bring you back to earth. We stride out into the cool, dry air and head for the city again. Koppartälten was constructed in 1782 to serve as stables and barracks for the royal bodyguards. Louis Jean

Desprez designed the facades in the mode of Roman army tents with a theatrical touch. A cafe and museum are permanent fixtures now. Stora Pelousen, the large lawn, rolls before us like a colossal green amphitheater. Finally we are rewarded for of our physical exertion – a downhill walk almost the whole way home Toward the end we pass by two eccentric figures among the buildings. Erected in 1907, Haga Tingshus looks like a giant tawny pastry sandwiched between the park and the noisy highway. The contrast with Haga Forum, a modernistic structure of glass and steel, is striking. Danish architect Hack Kampmann designed it in 1962 as a bus terminal for Arlanda International Airport. After having squirmed out of innumerable plans to tear it down, the building has been converted to a restaurant. For all the differences, the odd couple provides a sterling example of modern architectural trends, reinforcing the basic character of the park. And they offer a disarmingly soft landing from our time travel through the mists of the eighteenth century.

This is Stockholm at its most homey and charming. The cozy New England atmosphere and wide open spaces convey a sense of comfort and serenity despite the throngs of visitors.

The huge marketplace on the site of the old Barkarby airport will soon shake hands with a brand new residential area. The first Swedish factory outlet, which opened here in 1998, is among the 20th largest in Europe. Stockholm Quality Outlet offers discounts of 30-70% on all merchandise, representing upwards of 100 brands. Fourteen new stores and 4,000 square meters of floor space were added in November 2016. Among the Swedish brands are ECCO, Acne Studios, Haglรถfs, Gant, Lexington, Hope, J Lindeberg, Odd Molly, Rรถhnisch and Bjรถrn Borg. Their big international counterparts include Hugo Boss, Samsonite, Tommy Hillfiger, Guess, Calvin Klein and Barbour. You're sure to find a real bargain or two, not to mention tax-free rebates of up to 19% if you are not living in an EU country.

A new Stockholm Metro line will run out here as of 2025. Because many of the stores take in sample collections at head-spinning discounts, you may run across just what you are looking for even though it is not available anywhere else. Imagine yourself proudly wearing an article of clothing that you were the first to discover. In addition to the outlet, IKEA and many other leading Swedish brands are within walking distance. No matter what your age or tastes, you can easily devote an entire day to shopping in Barkarby. Öland – Island of Wind and Sun

BY HENRIK MOBERGER

The warm summer evening in Borgholm is enchanting. We abandon the whirlwind of tourists in the restaurants of the main drag and wander up to the all-seeing castle ruins, tinged by the last rays of the setting sun. The rhythmic music of nightingales echoes from the thickets and the fictional ghosts of Stora Alvaret loom in our imagination. Öland is Sweden’s biggest island and smallest province. A wide variety of flora and fauna, cultural events and historical relics offer something for everyone. Drive here or there, cycle or hike across the far-flung plains. The island is a scant 140 kilometers from north to south and not even 20 kilometers across. Two million tourists every year augment a

population of 25,000 inhabitants, 3,000 of whom live in Borgholm alone. This is nothing less than a haven for seasonal migrants from every country on earth. Birdwatching, golfing, culinary adventures, graves from the Iron Age, royal grandchildren, hiking in limestone country, glass art, concerts in the ruins of a seventeenth-century castle – take your pick of fascinating activities. Historical relics People have arrived here since time immemorial and left Stone Age, Iron Age and Viking relics. Ismanstorp and Eketorp are among the many ancient castles awaiting your visit. A tall tower built during the late twelfth century in present day Borgholm later became a Renaissance castle and eventually a Baroque palace. Having withstood the ravages of both

29

war and peace, it succumbed to a fire in 1806. Not simply awesome in themselves, the ruins serve as a venue for concerts and other cultural events. In addition to leading Swedish artists, Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys and other international icons have performed here. Officially a city since 1817, Borgholm is a teeming human colony and shopping Eden in the summer. Stores, restaurants and hotels are constantly sprouting up to host the two million tourists who knock on their doors. The Michelin Guide has awarded one star to internationally acclaimed chef Karin Fransson at Hotel Borgholm. Crown Princess Victoria’s birthday Construction of Solliden, Queen Victoria’s summer palace in Borgholm, was completed in 1908. The royal family retreats here every

year while tourists stroll through the gardens and admire the various buildings. The palace hosts a series of public activities every July 14, Crown Princess Victoria’s birthday and Öland’s national commemoration day. Considering that she is turning 40 this year, a little extra celebration is certainly in order. Buy your tickets at www.victoriadagen.se As Öland’s popularity as a tourist destination rose, the lines to the small ferries between Kalmar on the mainland and Färjestaden grew longer and longer. Flowers and ghosts Since we drove to Öland, thorough exploration is on the docket. Much of the southern half is covered by a large plain called Stora Alvaret, a UNESCO world heritage site. The limestone soil is flower friendly. An incredible palette of thirty colorful orchid species and other floral prodigies blanket the plain, not to mention the wealth of avian breeds overhead. Ottenby with its famous Långe Jan lighthouse at the southern tip houses an ornithological station for research and ringing. Ottenby also features a royal demesne that has been an official hunting grounds since the sixteenth century. The king is rarely here, so you can peacefully wander around and listen to the songs of rare birds. If you’re still in Stora Alvaret after the sun sets and the mist settles in, don’t be surprised if you encounter one of the ghosts that famed crime novelist Johan Theorin chillingly portrays in his tales. An artist’s utopia The naturally shifting light, particularly above Stora Alvaret, has turned the island into a utopia for artists. Museums, galleries and artist colonies dot the landscape. Paradisverkstaden sells china, glass and furniture (see our spread). Vida Art Gallery and Museum offers glass art by world-renowned Ulrika Hydman-Vallien and Bertil Vallien. Öland Museum is located in Himmelsberga, a village to the east of

31

Borgholm with its rows of eighteenth and nineteenth century farms. On your way to Ottenby, take some time to stop by Capellgården, a design school in the spirit of famous furniture maker Carl Malmsten, nestled in a well-preserved farmstead. Universal paradise Northern Öland is largely woodland. Mittlandsskogen is the largest deciduous forest in northern Europe and there is more coniferous forest the farther up you go. Bödabukten on the east side of the island offers a ten-kilometer beach, often cited as the prettiest in all of Sweden. You can drive around the entire island in one day, but give yourself a week if you want to fully sample what it has to offer. Why not rent a bicycle or hike the well-marked trails of Stora Alvaret? Don’t worry about huffing and puffing up steep hills (there aren’t any), just relax and enjoy the magnificent pageant as far as the eye can see. Öland is a universal paradise, whether you are a fan of flora and fauna, golf, hiking, shopping, fine eating, cultural events or world heritage (www.oland.se).

f you find yourself on Öland, or on the mainland near the bridge that leads to the island, don't forget to pay a visit to Paradisverkstaden, an oasis of pottery just to the south. The bright, open architecture, luscious greenery and view of meadows and Kalmar Sound illumine a studio, workshop, store and cafe surrounded by a magnificent garden. Revel in the lovely pottery and glass art, watch the entire production process from throwing to molding, painting and glazing. Among the products made here are small butter tubs and large garden urns – you name it. Founded in 1975, the operation is run by the Paradis family. Patriarch Olof was trained as a potter and matriarch Eva as a textile artist at Capellagården, Carl Malmsten's school on Öland. They went on to study and complete their apprenticeships in France and Denmark. The

interplay of his shapes and her decor gave birth to Paradisverkstaden. With its folds, spheres and inward turning edges, the idiom was special from the very start, and Olof was always developing new techniques. Eva's innovative decor is particularly apparent in her unique dishes and urns with hand-carved reliefs, as well as her gold and platinum painting. The Blå och Rosa blom (Blue and Pink Bloom) and Slottskrukan (Palace Flower Pot) series were made for the palace stores in the 1980s, and Paradisverkstaden became an official supplier to the Royal Palace in 1986. The artists have had exhibits at Svenskt Tenn and the NK department store while participating in international trade shows. In collaboration

33

with Millesgården, they put together Fröhus (Seed Vessel), their first collection from cast materials, subsequently a classic. Hanna and Moa, the Paradis daughters, also design for the company these days. Hannah's first collection Abstraktion, consisted of grandiose, checkered pots and vessels. Moa's collection Linje (Line) focused on garden items, including hanging bird baths and a dainty little candle dish that became one of Paradisverkstaden's most popular products. The two of them are also in charge of promotion and production. Everything made in the workshop and studio – unique objects, design experiments, collections, etc. – is on display at the store.

Other brands supplement the pottery. Among them are furniture by Fermob in France; bags, cushions and accessories by Afroart and Ceannis; enchanting fabrics by Växbolin in Hälsingland; sheepskin by Shephard; and wool slippers and ceramic jewelry from Denmark. Every year Öland celebrates a four-day Harvest Festival at the end of September or beginning of October and Paradisverkstaden is dressed in its fall finery and ready to show off everything it has to offer. Potters are working away in the studio, and inimitable objets d'art are on sale at the garden exhibit. This is also the time of the year for the annual Öland Art Night, when all galleries and studios stay open and the garden of Paradisverkstaden hisses and steams as pottery is Raku-fired under the stars in accordance with a centuries-old tradition. Paradisverkstaden is heaven on earth for anyone who is love with form and color. Set aside a few hours for this trip – you will never regret it.

Skokloster Slott Skokloster is a former privately owned castle and one of the greatest baroque castles in the world. This stunning structure is beautifully located on the peninsula between Stockholm and Uppsala, surrounded by nature and gazing majestically over the shores of Lake Mälaren. Built between 1654-76, in the Swedish Age of Greatness by the owner, general and count, Carl Gustaf Wrangel who died in 1676. This resulted in the castle never being completed. Today, parts of the castle have been originally kept exactly as they were, opening an incredible and beautiful world of wellpreserved castle possessions, interiors, art, fabrics, porcelain, weaponry and more to visitors from around the world. Don’t miss Vertumnus, the famous painting by Giuseppe Arcimboldo, when it isn’t out loaned out to a museum in another part of the world. The grounds of the castle are equally beautiful and always open to the public. Mackmyra – the sensational Swedish whisky The year was 1998. A group of friends, four women and four men who had attended Stockholm’s Royal Institute of Technology together, were planning a ski vacation in the mountain village of Sälen. Each of them was to choose a bottle of liquor to pack with their gear and share with the others over the course of the week. Flushed and excited after the first day on the slopes, they unwrapped their libations. To their utter amazement, eight bottles of whisky lay on the table. They had witnessed the improbable birth of a brand that leads the Swedish market 15 years later. Other distillers have followed in Mackmyra’s wake, but none has managed to emulate its track record. The friends spent the evening discussing the history and traditions associated with liquor in Sweden. What could possibly explain the fact that the country had never manufactured whisky? The question kept going round and round in their heads. They couldn’t simply dismiss the idea, they had to act. Before long they had explored the ins and outs of the challenges they faced and come up with a concrete plan. Badly in need of some practical knowledge to supplement the technical expertise they had cultivated at the university, they took two field trips to Scotland, where they met with experts to sample, compare and discuss their various options. Back in Sweden, they looked into ways of manufacturing the pot stills they needed. They next step was to find a location. Magnus Dandanell, who originally hailed from the small town of Gävle north of Stockholm, was instrumental in identifying a suitable site at the old mill in Mackmyra. There they would be surrounded by culture, tradition and rustic romanticism. The mill had used a little canal to generate electricity. The Scots would have leaped long ago at the opportunity to build a whisky distillery in such an ideal spot. In 2011, Mackmyra was at it again, this time opening an innovative 35-meter tall distillery powered largely by gravity. The breakthrough technology cuts energy consumption in half and contributes to distinctive, contemporary products. Curiosity, inventiveness, the latest findings and plain old hard work have turned Mackmyra into an elite whisky manufacturer.

Cask in BodĂĽs mine, 50 meters below ground.

The company has built several aging facilities throughout the country. They are located on Fjäderholmarna Island in the Stockholm Archipelago, a cellar vault below Häckeberga Palace in southern Sweden, the old military radar station over the popular Smögen Wooden Pier on the West Coast, and atop a mountain in Lofsdalen, with its dazzling view 1,950 meters above sea level. The main storehouse is 50 meters below ground in the galleries of the Bodås mine west of Mackmyra. The brand currently consists of four perennial standards. The company constantly markets new limited editions that sell out in the wink of an eye. The Swedish Systembolaget monopoly, as well as tax-free and duty-free shops, all carry them. Here are a couple of whiskies we can heartily recommend. With its origins in the traditional bourbon barrel, Mackmyra Brukwhisky is simple and light with a touch of vanilla, pear, honey and herbs. Svensk Ek is a malt with a hint of spices, partly aged on Swedish oak. The year’s seasonal release is scheduled for May. It will be the company’s first public edition of a ten-year old Swedish single malt, aged primarily on former bourbon barrels. Why not stop by your local Systembolaget and pick up a bottle of genuine Swedish whisky next time you get the chance. You won’t regret it.

Paul Svensson

The contrarian restaurateur BY KENNETH LAGSTRÖM PHOTO - JOHAN STÅHLBERG

S

weden has more skilled cooks per capita than most other countries. Paul Svensson is one of them. Born in Helsingborg, he would have become a bricklayer if it had been up to his father. But Paul had other ideas in mind. He loved working with his hands and would no doubt have been a godsend to the construction industry. Instead the culinary arts were blessed with a practitioner whom few can match. His professional interest began at the age of 14 when he visited France over the summer and lived with a family that ate out five nights a week. The new flavors were an epiphany for him. Not only was good food a priority and source of pleasure for the family,

but they liked to talk about it and share their experiences. Dinner was the highpoint of the day. "I remember almost every time we went to a restaurant," Paul says. In order to climb to the top of his profession, Paul has learned from the best chefs through the years. Marco Pierre White in London, Mathias Dalgren (winner of Bocuse d`Or in 2003) and Melker Andersson's fivestar restaurant Fredsgatan 12 in Stockholm are among many establishments that have benefited from his gastronomical talents. It all started with military service. Conscripted as a seaman, he was trained as a cook aboard a ship. Ever since then, Paul has constantly ex-

62

plored new sides of himself and been inspired by the opportunity to experiment with different kinds of ingredients. He is always on the lookout for the perfect recipe. His preference is simple, natural fare. "What you prepare and where you do it doesn't matter – nor does the amount of experience you have necessarily make a difference. But the ingredients are always of utmost importance. I am continually on the road, collecting impulses from everything I encounter: cultures, customs, working methods, experiences, knowledge, skills, interests. One of my biggest kicks is meeting people day by day who are responsible for what we actually eat and who never lose their passion for their profession."

As is the case with everyone, the forces that landed Paul at Fotografiska Museet were largely random. Someone asked a good friend whether Paul might want to open a restaurant at the museum. He relayed the message to Paul, whose brain shifted into high gear. The prospect of having his own establishment was both challenging and thrilling. The combination of photography and food was as natural as could be. Museum patrons want to get the most out of their visit. You can't beat the onetwo punch of timely architecture exhibits, a wide range of photos, a dazzling view of the water and world-class meals. The restaurant, which also features a bar and cafe, was ready to go before Paul knew what had hit him. The lake is visible from every window. The museum occupies an old customs house. The architects took maximum advantage of the furnishings and ambience. Everyone gets what they want here. To ensure an easygoing social atmosphere, the museum strives for a healthy mix of art and pleasure. The popular restaurant has amassed a number of awards and citations. Nowadays

people frequently go there to eat and stop by a photo exhibit to round off their visit. The meals are moderately priced. "Our passion for sustainable enjoyment is what animates the food, beverages and service we provide," Paul says. "Our goal is to serve a meal that will leave you with fond

memories for years to come. Our entire concept is based on making the most out of organic, seasonal herbs and vegetables – our main ingredients – while beef, seafood and fowl are more like trimmings. In other words, exactly the opposite of what other restaurants do. What we strive for is an agreeable, inclu-

We are always scouting out the best, tastiest, most nutritious and ethically sound ingredients for each day and season. If we do our job right, our guests will go home with a sense of gratification, satisfaction and fulfilment. I refer to it as responsible cooking." Visiting the museum restaurant is totally

captivating. The meals are meticulously prepared. You can't help but be moved by it all. And to make everything just a little more enticing, the kitchen is visible from the tables. The focus is on local, organic produce. The ingredients for any particular day reflect the best available options just then, and the selection of Swedish delicacies is a secret until you actually sit down. "Food sometimes seems abstract and anonymous, but it always comes from some-

where and we want our menu to demonstrate that”, Paul says. “The name of a vegetable dish is also a statement about its origins. Take, for instance, amadine potatoes with smoked sour cream and vendace roe from Kalix.” When you revel in the food and photo exhibits together, the overall sensory impressions are exquisite. Plan to spend a few hours at Fotografiska Museet – you'll never regret it. Both your eye and stomach will be eternally grateful.

any of us fantasize about making a difference in the world, even saving lives. More often than not, it is never more than a dream. Artist and researcher Petra Wadstrรถm is an exception to the rule. Following both her head and heart, she invented Solvatten, which now provides clean water to a quarter of a million people day in and day out. Vacationing in Australia with her family during the 1990s, Ms. Wadstrรถm was struck by the abundance of sunshine. Certainly all that energy could be exploited somehow. A light bulb finally went on in her head during a trip to Indonesia and the experience of so many people who constantly struggled for access to clean water. "It was easy to see that they faced enormous odds," she says. "But

none of the reports I read about existing solutions mentioned the use of solar energy." Ms. Wadström started experimenting on the basis of her research about the potential of various wavelengths to purify water. She kept her eye on the big picture – a system that would be easy to operate, meet sustainability requirements and function without any attachments or spare parts. The Solvatten water container that she ultimately came up with uses ultraviolet rays to purify water in two to four hours. A sunny day is all you need. While the first unit was manufactured in 2007, it took four years for the company to accumulate the capital required to start up large-scale production. With 45,000 households now using the device, approximately 250,000 people around the world can drink clean water for the first time. A number of areas in countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Haiti are less at risk for cholera, maggots and parasites thanks to the introduction of Solvatten. And that's not all. The system also heats water to 75 centigrade for washing dishes, doing the laundry and bathing. Many diseases are related to inadequate hygiene, not only of the hands. People who use Ms. Wadström's invention have seen a decline in eye infections and dermatological conditions as well. As a Swedish businesswoman, she has always prioritized quality and sustainability. Given that the devices are built to last for 7-10 years, they are among the most economical water treatment systems on the market. Many households still have no choice but to boil water over an open fire. "But that places a burden on finances, time and the environment," Ms. Wadström says. "With Solvatten, you can go off to perform other chores and come back a few hours later." Ultimately the developing world could also benefit from more ecologically sound habits. "Swedes have long enjoyed the luxury of clean, delicious water," Ms. Wadström says, "but health risks remain in many other places.” Best of all, Solvatten's carbon footprint disappears after only ninety-six hours, which can hardly be said for all the plastic bottles that sell by the millions every day. Ms. Wadström argues that Europeans need to think more holistically. More than once she has taken one of her containers along on a vacation. "I remember staying at a beautiful hotel in Thailand, but my analysis showed that the water was contaminated. No problem, I thought, I’ve got my trusty old companion with me. And the plastic bottles could stay on the shelves."

An Urban Oasis HOTEL

“Oasis”: a time or experience that is pleasant and restful I travel often, far and wide. Exploring the world and experiencing hotels is both a passion of mine and a natural part of my private and business lifestyle. But one of the best parts about travel is discovering your own home city. So, finding a true urban oasis is like finding a hidden treasure and you just want to share it with everyone. Well, I found one! And it’s right in the heart of Stockholm.

70

Easily accessible with only a 10-minute walk to the bustle of Stockholm and yet far away enough to feel like you are on island with a big ‘do not disturb’ sign on it. This award-winning eco-friendly Scandinavian style hotel, houses 78 rooms and offers a laid-back luxurious experience, made up of two modern buildings that hold a lot of history. Dating back to 1699, it has an intriguing history and was originally built to house the Royal Marines of Karl XII. After careful renovation and historical preservation, today this landmark hotel is a beautifully modern hotel oozing Swedish lifestyle and harmony in even the smallest details. Uniquely pairing history with the best in contemporary Swedish design, art, cuisine, fashion and music. From the greeting at reception to the showing of my room, the welcome is inviting and sets the bar for the rest of my stay. All rooms are beautifully designed in true minimalistic Scandinavian style like the rest of the hotel – which I find both calming and inspiring. My cultural fix is easily taken care of with just a 5-minute walk to three incredible museums, the Modern Museum of Art, the Architecture and Design Museum and the East-Asian Museum all located on the island too. Stay active at this “green hotel” by walking, cycling around the city using one of the hotel bicycles or play a game of tennis in the hotel’s historical tennis court. Enjoy late summer sunsets sitting along the waterfront watching boats sail by as the sun sets over the Old Town and Södermalm. Dinner here at the hotel is not disappointing, the ambiance and cuisine are superb. To add a little more glamour to the evening, a walk across the bridge takes you to the Cadier Bar at the Grand Hotel or the summer terrace of the Lydmar hotel located along the waterfront. No need for a taxi ride home. After a relaxing yet active day, my good night’s sleep truly is good and it’s not just all the fresh air. Realizing that the bed is a deluxe Duxiana, might have something to do with it. Their breakfasts using the best local produce, is the only reason to drag me out of bed and away from my room’s lush garden and sea views. After which I enjoy my coffee outside in a garden deck chair in the sun. This too is the perfect place for events, meetings or conferences. Many of their meeting rooms have great

tranquil views and there are endless options for activities for all to do. If anything, staying here is relaxing and wonderful and in parts, an inspiring experience for me personally, it has given me ideas, increased my “good conscience in moving toward a more sustainable lifestyle and inspired me to make decisions about what I’d like to add more to my work, life, balance. Coming here is a lovely escape and going home inspired, is a priceless gain. My most favorite part is knowing that this oasis is right here in Stockholm, close to me. I only hope that you all can get a chance to experience it too. Selected Notes: Hotel Skeppsholmen is an eco-labeled hotel belonging to the Nobis Group. It is a member of The Design Hotels. Richard Herrey In the United States, Richard went to high school and took dance lessons in the evening. The week after he turned 18, he got his first gig on the TV series Fame. That led to a dancing job in the John Travolta movie Staying Alive with Sylvester Stallone as director. “It was pretty surreal to be in Hollywood and work at what was then MGM Studios. I bumped into the cast of Dallas in the lunch room.” But it was not until the family came back to Sweden that his singing career took off. Above all, Richard remembers a gig in their hometown of Gothenburg before 30,000 people. “Five years earlier we had played on the same stage for perhaps 200 of our closest friends and acquaintances, so this was magical.” He also mentions a show at the Tivoli in Copenhagen as almost unreal. “There were 51,000 people, and we broke the box office record previously held by the Beach Boys.” Because Richard had a talent for both singing and dancing, the world of musicals was a natural step, and in the early 1990s he was involved in the Swedish productions of Grease, Hair and West Side Story. But always being on the move when he was growing up had left its mark and Richard has tried many different paths in his career. He has managed Oscarsteatern in Stockholm, he has lived in the United States again with his wife and children, he has worked as a marketing manager for the Vätternrundan recreational bicycle ride - "because I like to bike a lot" - and he is now back in Stockholm where he runs the Hard Rock Cafe while

n February 26, 1984, Richard Herrey woke up to a new life. He went overnight from being a virtual unknown to a superstar who was constantly stopped on the street to sign autographs. Richard was 19 years old and had won the Swedish Eurovision Song Contest the night before with his brothers Peter and Louis in the group Herrey. When they also won the Eurovision Song Contest two months later with their song "Digi-Loo Diggi-Ley," fame was here to stay. “It was incredibly transformative,” Richard says. “Suddenly there were people outside our house looking and pointing. Sure, you need attention as an artist, but it is very special when you are so young - never being left alone.” But even if celebrity was something new for Herrey, his earlier life was anything but commonplace. He was born in Strömstad, a picturesque coastal town on the Norwegian border, but his family soon moved to the Gothenburg suburb of Tynnered, where social problems were part of everyday life. “It was something you learned from. During the school year, we were in Gothenburg, and in the summer we were in Strömstad, where Mom and Dad ran a riding camp. There were horses, excursions, swimming and more horses the whole summer.” It sounds idyllic. “I can say it was adventurous. Mom and Dad were entrepre-

neurs and wanted things to work out, but they often lost money. Still, things were happening all the time. I spent my first year of school in Spain because Dad had the idea of selling ice cream there. We were not monetarily enriched by their adventure, but we were enriched by the experience.” In the early 1980s, the family decided to move to the United States, where Richard's older sister already lived, but because there was not much money, they went one at a time as they could afford it. “Because resources were scarce, I flew standby and remember spending two days at Gatwick Airport at the age of 16, sleeping on a couch and not knowing whether I would come with the next plane.”

hosting a radio show in the morning and performing a couple of times a month. He says he is happy to be back Stockholm. “It's probably the most beautiful capital in the world. I am a nature person, but the nice thing about Stockholm is that there is nature in the city too.” He mentions Långholmen Island as a favorite spot. “You only have to walk across the bridge and it's so nice and peaceful. I also like to sit by the water on Riddarholmen Island and look at City Hall. It is right in the city but that is hardly noticeable.”

Oases in Stockholm

If you’re on vacation and looking for a little relaxation, good restaurants and (weather permitting) dainty outdoor cafes are probably near the top of your list. Here are a few options that combine the ambience of nature and culinary pleasure for a total experience.

Restaurang Ulla Winblad You’ll find this restaurant in the middle of Royal Djurgården Park. The out-of-the-way cafe has an air of luxury, a whiff of the countryside in an urban setting. The potted plants and hint of wilderness lend the sense of being surrounded by an oasis. Ulla Winblad was the muse of Carl Michael Bellman, the eighteenth century Swedish poet laureate. Home cooking is the name of the game here. The service is prompt and personal. The menu frequently reflects current Swedish holidays. If you show up on Sunday, you can be sure that veal roast with cream sauce and the house jelly will be waiting for you. The traditional lunch special is always among my favorite dishes. Raw spiced salmon with bread fried in butter and mustard and dill sauce a la carte, cubed tenderloin steak with diced potatoes and egg yolk and mustard cream sauce, or fish casserole, and crème brûlée for dessert, will never leave you disappointed. Restaurang Piren - Bar

PHOTO - ISTOCKPHOTO / ©ElmaQ

You can’t beat a Stockholm dinner immersed in the rays of the evening sun and a breeze off the nearby sea. Restaurang Piren offers the entire package, not to mention alluring flowers and plants wherever you look. Built on a pier, the establishment is perfectly positioned for you to bask in the glory of the western sky. Both indoor and outdoor seating abounds. You may be near downtown but the location is still off the beaten track. The Holmberg area is reminiscent of a French coastal town with a bustling holiday spirit and plenty of opportunities for swimming and bathing. Large awnings and bargeboards shield the cafe from the sun and the Infrared heating switches on as soon as it turns a bit cool. The fare is inviting and moderately priced. The servings are generous. Loving preparation and flavor are top priorities. Seafood and shellfish dominated the menu last time I was there, but enticing meat and vegetarian dishes were not far behind. My current favorite is roasted steelhead with asparagus and beet salad, hollandaise sauce and browned butter, served with herbed potatoes. The children’s menu is always appealing as well. Kristinebergs Strand 2, phone 08-6183030

Restaurang Tranan This jewel of a restaurant is near downtown Stockholm but a little off the main drag. Despite steady traffic on Karlbergsvägen, the cafe breathes a genial atmosphere. The bountiful plants and flowers add to the homey feeling. In business for more than 80 years now, Tranan features a rustic (if typical Swedish) menu. The potato pancakes with vendace roe, sour cream, red onions and chives are unmatched in the city. Or treat your taste buds to meatballs, smoked sausage or delightful seafood. As wine enthusiasts, the owners have priced their selection as inexpensively as possible. In most cases, you are welcome to order a single glass. The cozy bar in the cellar features frequent musical entertainment. Tom Waits, Lloyd Cole, Craig David and other internationally renowned artists have performed here. Studio Heijne BY SANCHIA LAMBERT

Fashion is constantly evolving and has a constant flow of new designers popping up on a daily. So, when a designer manages to

capture our attention from the rest, it means a whole lot more than just being “new on the fashion scene; it must embody something extra, different, refreshing, and create a need to see more. Such is the case with Wendy Heijne and the near catalytic rise of her label aptly named Studio Heijne.

sit down with the innovative founder and designer and though she is busy running her business and a family, her demeanour is calming, friendly and her nature so humble. Feels like we’ve met before, but we haven’t. She has an adorable mixed DutchSwedish accent and speaks about her brand with determination and pride and has fond (and funny) memories of how it all began. It all started when Wendy was a child, growing up in her homeland the Netherlands, always sketching in her notebooks or making clothes for her Barbies, unaware of her exceptional talent and that she had more potential than she really knew. Wendy contemplated careers being a doctor, psychologist or a fashion designer, but her true calling was realized back in her high school days, she remembers with a big smile. “I was in high school – I couldn’t really sew or anything! I tried taping things together, I created skirts out of chicken wire, my dresses I made from garbage bags and I made fake fur dresses too. I had a fashion show at high school with this and it was amazing!” she says, laughing and beaming from ear to ear. After high school, this down-to-earth beauty

Week, around the same time as the launch of her website, and has already captured the attention of many in the fashion industry including the likes of Vogue. So why Sweden? While working at H&M, Wendy also later fell in love with her husband Peter and today calls Stockholm her home to her family with two sons; Max and Tim. She finds inspiration in Sweden – not only in her unique style which she proudly describes as “my Dutch roots with Scandinavian influence”, but in daily life; “Scandinavian style and design inspires me and I like the supportive system of encouraging work-life-balance and equality. It makes it easier to have families and be working professionals too.” The future is very bright for Wendy and Studio Heijne with exciting collaborations in the pipeline. Constantly thinking out of the box, she’s currently working on collaborations with hotels and will provide a pop-up-store environment on the premises; a personal space where guests can mingle, talk, try on garments and ask questions - simply a more personal approach to service. Or you can also visit the showroom located in central Stockholm. Studio Heijne changes the game in everyday fashion for us; she blends her passion for fashion and women into a winning formula – a fun, colorful and bold concept, creating a sustainable brand of inclusion for all, no matter what size or shape you are, or wherever you are in the world. It’s a lifestyle. It’s the future.

started her fashion career after being accepted into the prestigious ArtEZ; the University of the Arts and later accepted a job at one of the largest international fashion companies in the world; our own home grown, H&M. Wendy thrived here for 12 years and her favorite part was working with so many different types of women every day. Life became very real for Wendy during a time in her life when she got real with her emotions, with life, living authentically and so she did what most of us contemplate on doing but don’t always manage to do; pursuing your dreams. Wendy started Studio Heijne, “a modern fashion brand for women who know their style and who know what they want” with my favorite part being “the unique and new thing about Studio Heijne, is that you can also customize the garments. So, you can adjust it according to your own taste and style.” This makes us not ‘just a customer’, but part of the design process as well – we get to be designers too. I adore customization and though it’s widely more available for technology products like cars, customization adds a sense of luxury to the lifestyle of the modern on-the-go woman. It’s versatile, comfortable and accessible from anywhere in the world by the click of a button. “We have an online tool which allows you to play with colors, lengths (of skirts or sleeves), etc. The result is immediately visualized with an option to have your garments made-to-measure to suit your own body size and shape. This is unique in women’s fashion”, says Wendy. This is what sets her apart from the rest; she thinks of the need for now as well as for the future of fashion. This is also why she’s so passionate about keeping sustainability in the forefront. The fashion lover says that “Fashion is one of the most polluting industries in the world, so sustainability is the way forward. My take on it is to minimize the overproduction; 30% of what we see in shops is overproduced.” The response so far, has been overwhelmingly positive. Wendy successfully launched her colorful, bold first collections last year at Stockholm’s Fashion

Skärgården The Archipelago BY SANCHIA LAMBERT

Our planet earth is simply incredible. I sit at my window seat witnessing its beauty as we fly into Stockholm over the archipelago ‘skärgården’ as it is locally called, blue and green. Vastly blanketed by thousands of islands big and small, sprinkled out over the ocean. Fascinating. My curiosity is strong again and I can’t wait to discover the magic of it. No trip into the archipelago is ever the same.

84

The Swedish coastline is lushly populated with archipelagos starting from North on the east coast, moving along the coast down south towards Stockholm all the way around to the west coast and up north again towards Norway. The most well-known of the archipelago heavens is Stockholm’s archipelago. With more than 30,000 islands, it spans out over 80 kilometers, uniquely starting from Stockholm’s city (yes, the city!) and out towards the Baltic. It’s the largest archipelago in Sweden, one of the most beautiful and largest in the world. Explorers come here to retreat and relax, some for total island seclusion and others to celebrate or enjoy life with family and friends. To indulge in their lavish or humble summer homes or simply to disconnect from our

usual faster paced lifestyles. The archipelago is divided into three areas: northern, central and southern archipelagos. HOW TO GET THERE Getting to the archipelago by boat is easy. There are three different island hopping ferry lines which take you to the various areas and islands. Ferry services are available from the “Cinderella” and “Waxholmsbolaget” ferry companies. A day trip by rib boat or charter your own vessel from a yacht charter. Helicopter or seaplane trips are added value to an experience. ALLEMANSRÄTTEN Sweden is a very open and welcoming society with great respect for nature, the outdoors and each other. Thanks to a Swedish law called “Allemansrätt”: The right

ISLAND LIFE The northern island hopping line will take you to the exciting, barren islands of Rödlöga and Svartlöga on the outskirts of the archipelago and charming islands like Idö to the far north. Idö has no permanent residents or cars however, it’s flora life dazzles with orchids in May, the perfect time to visit. The central archipelago has popular destinations like Ljusterö, Möja and Grinda. Some accessible by bus or boat from Stockholm like Möja, where the central and outer archipelago meet. Explore the Björndalen nature reserve forests and from May to September, you can kayak all the way to the horizon. Search for the elusive “Russian ovens”, in which Russians baked rye bread when they ravaged the archipelago in 1719 or visit the tourist office and rent a bicycle. Grinda, is just an hour from Stockholm and houses Grinda Wärdshus, a world-class restaurant with overnight accommodation. The southern archipelago will take you to popular islands like Sandhamn, Utö and Nåttarö - known for its stunning beaches, utterly undisturbed forest and grazing herds of fearless proud deer. Cosmopolitan Sandhamn is far out in the archipelago and attracts tourists who sail, offering first-class restaurants and lovely accommodation.

of public access, a unique right to roam freely through nature even on private land but with one easy rule, “don’t disturb, don’t damage”.

EXPLORE AND ADVENTURE All islands are great exploring destinations for camping, picnics, hiking, biking, mushroom and berry picking. Kayaking between islands, adventurous rib boat trips for eagle and seal safaris and a sauna and swim – very Swedish and perfect in all seasons. WHEN TO GO The archipelago can be explored all year round but if you want to experience the real magic the best times to visit are between May and September for those long summer nights… The archipelago is a world within a world, food for the soul and I can’t wait for you to explore it. Welcome to the Skärgården.

Marina Abramović “The Cleaner” at Moderna Museet Most likely you would have heard of her, if not, now is a greater time than any to experience and to ask yourself why you have not. A most talked about artist in the world, the Belgrade born is a pioneer artist who uses performance as a visual art. She is fearless, pushes boundaries and immerses herself in the freedom of expression through art, embracing the controversial critiques of her incredible work. Not to be missed. “Her practice sometimes demands of us that we let go of a linear sense of time or an autonomous individuality. Midnight Run Stockholm (Malmö, Gothenburg) “Midnattsloppet” is one of the most fun runs in Sweden and very different from the Stockholm marathon. This easy does it race is only 10kms and is a slightly different way of enjoying the “nightlife”. It takes place in all three main cities at different times so if you miss the one in Stockholm you can try to catch it in either Malmö or Gothenburg. Stay fit a fun way with the locals as you listen to music, cheers from strangers and locals. You'll feel more like a you are at a carnival rather than running a race. midnattsloppet.com PHOTO - MIDNATTSLOPPET.COM

Museums WELL WORTH A VISIT Explore the many museums Stockholm has to offer. Here are some of our favorites.

Paul Svensson, culinarian at the Fotografiska restaurant, nominated as the best mediumclass eatery in town at the All About Stockholm competition. The World Wildlife Fund sings the praises of its sustainable, dependable selection and services.

Fotografiska You can't get more popular than this. Fotografiska in Stockholm is a world-class museum where everything revolves around photography but with so much more to tickle your mind and senses. There's always an exciting new exhibit for you to feast your eyes on, not to mention an excellent shop and a prizewinning restaurant with its chef from a well-known TV cooking show. Open more hours a year than any museum you have ever heard of, Fotografiska has won acclaim and attracted visitors from far and wide. While the museum is certainly

the place to go if you are looking for the latest and most provocative photography, it is also a watering hole for people who love all kinds of beauty and culture. With their magnificent view of Stockholm and Old Town, the salons in the restaurant and cafe on the top floor are fashionable hangouts during the winter. The sidewalk cafe just outside the entrance beckons with its promise of gastronomic delight all summer long. Hours: 9 am to 11 pm every day of the year, with the exception of Midsummer's Eve and Christmas Eve. fotografiska.se

Artipelag

Artipelag is a great place to spend the day. First-class by anyone’s standards, it is attractively located in the Hålludden neighborhood of Värmdö, surrounded by the Stockholm Archipelago. The 10,000-square meter area features a large art gallery, a shop that offers original design products and a pair of restaurants with outdoor seating and lovely views. Take your pick of art exhibits and activities to get your creative juices flowing. The unique setting is especially famous for its dazzling 800-meter boardwalk, including wide larch wood footbridges, from the lower parking level past the piers up to the western entrance of the building. Easy access by boat, bus or car – a steamboat pier for passenger service from downtown, a floating pier for pleasure craft, and year-round, daily public transportation. artipelag.se

Artipelag’s annual summer exhibit opened on April 7. Works of contemporary British potter and author Edmund de Waal encounter paintings by Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) for a conversation about still life and the magic of everyday objects.

Paintings by Carl Fredrik Hill, Ernst Josephson, Helene Schjerfbeck and August Strindberg, as well as furniture by Gio Ponti and tapestries by Märta Måås-Fjetterström, titillate the eye. Drottningholm Palace Drottningholm Palace is among the best-preserved royal palaces from the 17th century and is representative of all European royal architecture from that period. The unique layout of the palace includes the exotic Chinese Pavilion pleasure palace, the palace theater and the magnificent palace gardens. Visit some of these gems as a complement to your Stockholm trip. Outside of Stockholm’s urban core are many lovely towns, as well as the islands of the archipelago.
