While it’s true you can simply delete irrelevant brainstorming ideas, keeping a goal or purpose in mind will help you generate better-quality ideas, questions, points, et cetera.

Another great way to brainstorm with mind maps is to start with your project, product or program needs or ‘must haves’. Now in her senior years it’s her mission as a “sage and maven” to share her 30+ years of experience doing what she loves: teaching others about the Internet, mobile devices, and digital marketing. In today’s world, children, young women and men, boys and girls can easily be snatched from their family and friends because of too much information on the internet. Security breaches, data breaches, hacking, swhishing and fishing, malware, spyware, viruses, hoax all with the goal to get you to give up information, or to steal information you have posted online.

So lets get right to: Being online can take up a lot of free time, whether you’re a parent or a child. It’s easy to get caught up in playing online games, watching YouTube videos, and chatting with friends. But remember, there is a world outside of the Internet, so try to balance your child’s time between the two accordingly. Only allow your child to access to the Internet (with the exception of doing homework) for a set, limited time each day.

Social Media, What is the right age? If your child wants to join a social media site, choose sites that are appropriate for their age. Many social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have an age minimum of 13 years old. It’s a good idea to have access to your child’s account credentials so you can supervise what they’re doing,

■■ such as adding new friends, ■■ receiving suspicious messages, or ■■ posting questionable content. This can be tricky because kids now a days demand privacy. You have to have a strong, trusting relationship to get them to understand safety. It’s also a good idea to look for kid-friendly social media sites for your kids to focus on, or simply inform them they’ll have to wait until they’re older to join such platforms.

Monitoring your kids’ online activity. The computer should be in a common area of your home. That way, you can keep an eye on your child, removing the temptation to visit websites or perform activities they are not allowed to do normally. Another way to add an extra layer of safety, since parents don’t have eyes in the back of their heads, is to upgrade to a security like a Security account, which will give you insights into your child’s mobile device activities as well. It will even: ■■ allow you to choose which apps your children can use — ■■ and the ability to turn off access to Facebook or YouTube. ■■ Remember to keep all security software updated to ensure optimal protection.

Other helpful tips: ■■ Periodically review your children’s list of instant messenger buddies, and your’s too! ■■ Read Security News in the Feed. Emphasize that computer privileges will not be taken away in the event of cyberbullying, which is one reason why children don’t alert their parents that they’re being bullied. IMPORTANT: Encourage regular password changes and teach your kids not to share passwords, not even with friends. A Guide For Kids: Do not give personal information to strangers online. Personal information is anything about you. Your ■■ full name, ■■ where you live, ■■ your school’s name, ■■ your parent’s names, ■■ your home address, and phone number. These pieces of information can help a stranger on the Internet find you, so be very careful about whom

you give this information to. Do not give it to anyone you have not met in real life. If you share any of this information on social media sites, be sure to check the privacy settings on the site to make sure none of it is viewable by the public.

Make online accounts safe and use strong passwords. They should contain a mixture of numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters, and special characters. Don’t reuse the same password on every site you visit. ■■ When creating an account to join a website, be sure to create a username that protects your personal information. ■■ Don’t use your full name as the username, as that is part of personal information that strangers can use to find out more about you by doing a simple Internet search.

Have you been considering quitting your day job in favor of starting a business? Have you just lost your job and are currently exploring alternative ways of earning a living? Have you always dreamt of owning your own business some day?

Before you take the leap of faith into self-employment, consider these 5 steps: Get clear on your goals/passions It's not enough to decide to become a business owner. There are several questions and things to consider before you move forward in becoming a business owner. You will need to think about what kind of business you wish to run. You`ll need to determine if you wish to grow it from scratch, buy an existing business or purchase an available franchise. But even before you decide that- you should think about how the business will fit in with the rest of your life. Running a business can be a huge commitment of time and money. So ask yourself what do you enjoy doing or what will bring you joy? You will spend much of your day on your business so it's a good idea for the business to provide work you actually enjoy doing. Ask yourself what you are most passionate about? What would you love to do? What is your dream job/business? Do your research/homework - Don't make any rash or impulsive decisions and don't leave your day job until you are absolutely sure of what you want to do and have a plan for doing it. Take the time to do good research by researching the industry, the marketplace, your potential target clients, your competitors. Do proper business research including a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis. Get a good handle on projected revenues and realistic operating costs as well as an understanding on how long it will take to breakeven and generate more revenues than expenses. Identify your personal strengths and skills and determine if there are any skills gaps. Determine how you will close any skill gaps or lack of expertise. Which gaps can be closed through skills training? Which gaps can be closed through recruiting the right people? Which gaps can be closed through coaching or mentoring? Determine

what options and opportunities are available to you right now? Learn from others' mistakes - There is no shortage of people who have started or run a business. Speak to as many people as you can who have gone before you. Learn what you can about what works, what doesn't, and what mistakes others have made. Don't waste valuable time and money. Be open to hearing others` perspectives on what they would have done differently. Hindsight is always 20/20. Business Plan ahead - Do the work and develop a business plan. While it may be a lot of work, it will be time well spent and most financial institutions will require one if you are searching for financing. The process of business planning is not only to prove to the bank that your business will be a success, it's also a roadmap for you to follow to ensure success. Running your business finances can be like running your weekly, monthly or yearly personal budget - so if you haven't developed good budgeting and financial management skills, it might be particularly challenging and doubly important to have a solid business plan. Hire a mentor - Starting and running a business can be challenging or even lonely at times. In addition to the day to day operations of the business, you may be mentally or emotionally overwhelmed by being a business owner. Having a safe place to go to for advice, guidance, and accountability or simply as a sounding board can be just what you need to help you make the transition into entrepreurship easier and smoother. When you are trying to get your life and priorities under control there is no better way to go about it than time management. Managing your time allows you to complete tasks, organize your life and feel accomplished. In order to feel accomplished and actually get something done, you probably want to schedule items in order to be able to mark them off as done, see where you are going or where you need to be. First of all you need an action plan. What is it that you want to do with your time? An action plan allows you to see where you need to take action in your life. SIMPLE WAYS TO ELIMINATE THE TIRE KICKERS In any business, you’ll spend a certain amount of time on clients who will never pay you. Website designers quote jobs that never come to fruition. Car dealers spend hours chatting up customers who will never buy. Book agents read countless manuscripts they will never

be able to sell. And coaches spend time giving out free advice to clients who cannot or will not hire them. Truthfully, it can be frustrating, and it’s definitely a drain on your time and energy. But there are some things you can do to eliminate those who will never become clients without having to spend time with them first.

Post Your Prices One of the most hotly debated topics among coaches and service providers is whether or not you should post your prices on your website. There are pros and cons on both sides of the fence, but the biggest advantage to posting your prices is that it immediately eliminates those who cannot afford you. Of course, you don’t have to list prices for everything

to achieve the same effect. If you offer private coaching and self-directed training packages, having a price tag of $1000 on your “entry level” course makes it pretty clear that your private coaching is going to be at the high end. If you prefer to quote packages individually, a line that states, “Coaching packages start at $XXX” is a simple way to state your prices while still giving you some flexibility.

Intake Forms Before you get on the phone with anyone, require that they do a little groundwork first. A client intake form should tell you everything you need to know about a potential client long before you pick up the phone. But what it tells you the most is how much work they’re willing to do. Freebie seekers aren’t likely to do the work required to answer even a simple questionnaire, so

those who do fill out your form are better prospects. Not only that, but you can include in your form a question about pricing, such as “What’s your budget for coaching?” Use a pre-defined list of answers that start with “$1,000 and up” rather than letting your potential client fill in her own amount, and those with smaller budgets won’t bother to complete it.

Change Your Language Words have power, and if the words you use on your website and other marketing material are speaking to newbies or those just getting started in business, you’ll never attract the audience you’re seeking. Instead of using words like “step by step plan,” say, “advanced techniques.” Rather than talking about “easy systems,” mention highend, complex software by name. Simple changes can help

you to automatically attract the right audience. You’ll still spend some time and energy on those who ultimately won’t hire you, but by making these simple edits to your website, marketing materials, and other business systems, you’ll begin to see more high-end clients and fewer of those you no longer wish to work with.
