Make Your Place Feel Like Home

A

s I write this, I am on the hunt for a new apartment. I’m looking for something a little closer to my friends in Minneapolis, and somewhere that will allow an adorable cat. And, most important, somewhere that’s not too far from Savvy’s offices in Shakopee.

Of course, the best part about getting a new place is decorating it. I can’t wait to get my bookshelves, buy new furniture and pick out a color scheme for my living room and bedroom. Maybe I’ll be able to find some local art, too; I once found a giant screen print of Woody Allen for $10 at a garage sale near St. Paul. Something of that ilk would be fantastic.

This month, whether you’ve got a new place or not, we hope to give you plenty of great home decor ideas - ideas to help you make your space feel like home. People-watching is one of my favorite pastimes. I’m not sure if it’s studying what people are doing, the conversations they’re having or just a general interest in others’ lives that make it so fun to sit idly and watch. No matter the reason, seeing individuals not only living their day-to-day lives but doing it in something incredibly fabulous makes street fashion perhaps even more thrilling than catwalk couture.

I’ve been inspired by noticing the creativity of those in coffee shops, walking on sidewalks and anywhere else you can watch from the sidelines. What if you could spot shady guys before they break your heart and spirit?

Stephanie Kotelnicki explores catching red flags before the damage is done.

M

y professional resume says a lot of things: “Creative graduate with more than nine years of experience and leadership in diverse environments, including administration, writing, fine arts, public relations, marketing and business.”

What it does not say is: “Posttraumatic relationship survivor and newly Certified Red Flag Specialist (CRFS).”

What is a CRFS? In the business world, Identity Management Institute defines CRFS as “a specifically designed program to train and certify individuals responsible for fighting identify theft red flags within entities.”

In the world of dating, I define it as “a fortuitously designed program to help train and empower individuals to responsibly fight emotional theft red flags within the human species.”

Simply put: To keep shady people from breaking your heart, and your spirit.

If this were a real certification, my inadvertent “classroom hours” and volunteer time would come close to awarding me that piece of notarized paper.

“For our first date he had me waiting for him at the restaurant for over an hour, Stephanie! When he finally showed up he was drunk!”

“He says he isn’t seeing anyone, but the other day he called me thinking he was calling ‘Sheila’ and told me everything he was going to do after he got ‘me’ undressed.”

“He made me drop him off at a halfway house on our first date. No judgment, but he really could have given me a heads up about that…”

Yes, my volunteer hours have been abundant. And in each case the specialist in me responded: Run! Run in the other direction!

Your bare feet on bubbling asphalt are safer than the road you are about to walk down if you stay with this guy.

But who was I to talk? Like most objective Certified Red Flag Specialists, I also suffer from the very subjective Red Flag Syndrome (RFS): an inability to listen to my own heart, gut or logical thought process and instead rely on people around me to push me in the direction I already know I should be going.

Throughout my dating life, my friends have heard disheartening red flag stories.

We’re talking self-respect-sacrificing, guiltridden, wake-up-call red flags.

“So as a joke last night, while we were cuddling I closed my eyelids and asked him what color my eyes are. He said green. He’s known me for two years and he said green!”

“Is it weird that the guy I just started seeing had Planned Parenthood Google mapped on his computer and refused to tell me why?”

The list goes on, and gets progressively worse. So why did my friends and I ignore the red flags?

“I was bored.”

“Lonely.”

“Impatient.”

“Two words: Relationship deficient.”

Me? Guilty of all of the above.

Despite my fictitious terminology, red flags are nothing to brush off. Basic psychology tells us the red flags you witness (and ignore) in someone else’s behavior eventually leads back to misgivings about what you deserve. Treading that thin line between entertainment and intimacy is a challenge, so ask yourself: Do you really have so little attachment to this guy that you can tolerate him showing up on dates intoxicated?

No? Then tear down the shades of blinding RFS and get gone.

Still, part of being a CRFS is that you will always be practicing – on your friends and on yourself. It’s a work in progress.

TIONS Rachel Kate’s career has taken her from reality TV to Playboy to entrepreneurship – directions she didn’t expect to take. Her surprise success is now flourishing in the Twin Cities.

“

Consult your friends on all things,” the ancient Roman philosopher Seneca famously opined, because their “counsel may be useful.”

Case in point: Rachel Kate, a 1995 graduate of Minneapolis South High School who expected to spend her life in the family’s automotive-maintenance business.

Instead, she embarked on a successful career as an interior designer—whose creativity is praised by clients from coast to coast—then skyrocketed to national fame as a finalist on HGTV’s “Design Star” reality show.

And now, in the biggest career transition of all, the 36-year-old Minnetonka Beach resident is poised to become a textile titan a’la Laura Ashley, with a line of children’s bedding and matching home décor set to roll out later this month at the prestigious New York Home Fashions Market.

Behind each transition point in her career, Kate said, has been a friend (or friends), urging her in a direction she’d never even considered.

“I have the best friends, and they’re all old friends,” recalls Kate, as she enjoyed a few moments of well-earned relaxation at Lord Fletcher’s on Lake Minnetonka, where she had just spent the weekend celebrating a bachelorette party with a gaggle of former classmates. “We go back 30 years,” to the days when, as a child, Kate spent much of her spare time painting fabrics, dreaming up home interiors and sketching out designer clothing.

“I had a lot of costume drawings,” she said.

Inspired by nature, she conjured up images of clothing both practical and free-flowing. Kate particularly recalls one outfit—“with really cute white pants and a white tank top, and a crazy hat’’—suggesting a birch tree.

At the time, however, all that was just a hobby: “Growing up, I didn’t know that I was ever going to do this (design) stuff. I resisted it at first.” Kate’s mother was constantly redecorating and painting the house, and as a girl, “it was almost annoying to me.”

Kate comes from a long line of gearheads. One of her great grandfathers opened what may have been the nation’s first motorcycle shop in the early years of the 20th century, and Kate inherited the family’s handy genes. She liked to build tables and benches, and her favorite classes were auto shop and ceramics. After graduation, she planned to attend Dunwoody vocational school and spend the rest of her life in the company of carburetors.

phenomenon. That’s the best way to describe her. She makes her own stuff out of scratch, she can construct it, she can sew it, whatever she sees in her vision, she can create it.”

Even though Boldon had been an acquaintance of Kate’s since the latter was in elementary school, “I actually found it shocking someone could have that much creativity in so many different areas. And I thought to myself, ‘she needs to be discovered.’”

The vehicle for that discovery, Boldon suggested, was HGTV’s “Design Star,” the popular reality show that pits some of the nation’s most imaginative interior designers against each other in a series of creativity contests. Every contestant on the show, Boldon noted, has some particular special skill—“they can paint, they can draw, they can pick good patterns.

“Rachel can do everything,” Boldon says.

Kate, who had never heard of the show (in fact, she didn’t even have cable TV), resisted: Public speaking, she said, had “always been my biggest fear … I just didn’t like it when people were looking at me … I’d never even had a professional photograph taken of myself. Not even for high school photos.”

Nonetheless, other friends kept mentioning the show to Kate, who finally gave in and sent an application. She was invited to the casting call. And once again, to her own surprise, Kate found her career launched in an entirely unanticipated direction.

“A reality show is the craziest thing you

can ever do,” Kate now says. Chosen as one of 12 contestants in last year’s season seven, the camera-shy Minnesotan found herself competing against some of the most competitive contests on TV, with every mistake and moment of panic filmed for a nationwide audience.

The tension was apparent from the very first episode, when the 12 designers competed to see who could do the best job making over a den in the Hollywood mansion where they’d be living for six weeks. At one point, a frustrated Kate can be heard telling everyone within earshot that the challenge was “the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”

Nonetheless, her “jungle room” design, inspired partly by the ceramic moose head she’d brought along from Minnesota and her partner’s leopard-pattern pillow, went on to win that episode. Then, she won the second episode—the iconic “white room challenge,” in which designers are given 15 hours to transform a bare room using only a few cans of paint and objects that can be purchased (on a tight budget) from a home and garden store.

On the third episode, Kate was teamed up with a partner to transform the personal office of Kris Jenner, the Kardashian family matriarch. And once again, she and her partner came away the winner, leading to speculation that she was destined to walk away with the whole series.

those friends later moved to New York, got hold of Kate’s early sketches and showed them to her aunt, who happened to serve as the financial adviser to design star Donna Karan.

Word got around, and Kate was urged to apply for a spot at New York’s famous Parsons New School for Design, a sort of boot camp for the nation’s next generation of fashion geniuses.

She applied, and to her own surprise, she was accepted.

••• After graduating with honors and a degree in fashion design, Kate bounced between New York (where she designed clothes for Playboy’s retail stores in Asia) and Minneapolis (where she earned a reputation for designing home interiors), along with a stint in Florida (where she designed a line of highly regarded handbags, only to see the venture fail due to manufacturing issues).

After a decade, when she was feeling “burned out” by the design business. “I told my boyfriend (now husband Elliot Hunt), ‘Let’s move all the way down to the (Florida) Keys. I’ll be an artist. I can paint those ‘This Way to the Beach’ signs.’ ” Once again, her friends had different ideas.

“She’s not your ordinary designer,” says Cheryl Boldon, who hired Kate in 2011 for a full remodel of her Minnetonka house, which had already served as a 1998 entry in the Parade of Homes. “She really is a design

Kate says her husband still questions why the show doesn’t eliminate contestants on a cumulative grading process, but she bears no ill will over how things turned out.

“HGTV has been very good to me,” Kate says; among other things, she’s scheduled to make guest appearances during the upcoming season four of the network’s “Rehab Addict” with Nicole Curtis, who buys houses that others consider beyond repair, transforming them into model homes.

And she definitely lost her fear of being in the spotlight.

“I don’t care anymore. You’re under such tremendous stress with that show, everything else that comes along is a cakewalk.”

Since the show concluded, she’s become a regular guest on ABC’s “Twin Cities Live” to demonstrate her forte, which she calls “DIY Decorating”—the process of transforming basic household items into objets d’art. And her work was a featured attraction at the 2013 Minneapolis Home and Garden Show, where she designed the interior of a model home with amenities aimed specifically at female buyers. She expects to be going back again for the 2014 edition.

••• What’s sets Rachel Kate apart from other designers, says long-time friend Andrea Switz, owner of the Twin Cities’ Yogurt Lab chain, is her ability to use the practical side of her brain, as well as the intuitive side: “She’s the perfect marriage of uber-creativity and the sense to back it up.”

Which is why Switz and other friends have begun urging Kate to employ both her right and left hemispheres, reinventing

herself once again—this time as the owner of a business that designs, manufactures and sells creative home décor.

“I’ve been pushing her to trademark ‘Rachel Kate,’” Boldon said. “Look at her background: She can show her flair as an interior designer, she designed clothes for Playboy, she designed her own handbags.

“And besides,” she adds with a laugh, “‘Rachel Kate’ is way better than ‘Kate Spade.’ It rolls right off the tongue.”

Enter Rachel Kate GIRL and Rachel Kate KID, two lines of children’s bedding and matching household goods that will be introduced next week to buyers for several major retailers.

Kate said the designs for the two lines, one for girls ages 10 to 12 and the other for younger boys and girls, arose naturally from her love of illustrating, and her work with home interiors.

“Nothing’s more fun than (designing) kids’ rooms,” says Kate, whose own daughter, Cassidy, is now 6. “It gives you the opportunity to be playful and creative.”

And the same is true of her two textile lines, which feature illustrations that are “very whimsical, with a lot of fun patterns.

“Being a mom and being a designer, I feel like I know what’s missing from the market,” she says. The textile lines are “basically based on my illustrations. At heart, I’m an illustrator, and this combines illustration with sewing and fabrics and all the things I’ve studied.

“All the things I’ve done in my life have led me to this.”

Sometimes when you want something done, you just have to do it yourself.

That was Ann Kim’s philosophy when it came to bringing better pizza to the Twin Cities.

“I felt the need for great pizza here,” she says.

Mission accomplished. Kim’s Pizzeria Lola – named after Kim’s dog - is getting ready to celebrate its third anniversary this November. And with a popular feature on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, along with numerous awards to its name, the South Minneapolis pizza joint and its artisan wood-fired creations have become a force to be reckoned with in the Twin Cities.

FOCUS Before coming to Minnesota, Kim lived in New York City for seven years. With a slice shop on every corner, she says she took great pizza for granted.

In the Twin Cities, though, Kim had a hard time finding a pizza that could stand up to New York’s greats.

She set out to change that.

“It became one of those fantasies,” she says.

Kim brought that fantasy to reality with a lot of hard work. She started by experimenting with pizza recipes in her home kitchen, studying artisan bread cookbooks in search of the perfect crust.

“The most important part of the pizza is the crust,” she says. “It’s the foundation.”

Kim also attended a pizza school in California to learn how to make better pizzas and how to run a restaurant.

Her mantra: “Focus on one thing and do it well.”

“There are the traditional, but I also wanted to embrace the West Coast experimental mentality,” she says. “The fun part for me was being able to be crazy and wild.”

Among her crazy creations is the Sunnyside, which is topped with two organic eggs prepared – you guessed it - sunnyside up.

“It’s like a carbonara on a pizza,” Kim says.

Then there are the pies that nod to her Korean heritage: the Lady ZaZa with its house-made kimchi and Korean sausage, as well as Pizzeria Lola’s top seller, the Korean BBQ topped with beef short ribs and a MENU sesame and soy chili vinaigrette.

BY ALLISON ROORDA Homeowners aren’t the only ones who want to make their living room look nice. Apartments need the same personal touch, but they also come with a few more things to consider.

“With apartment living, you’re condensed to a smaller room,” says interior designer Tracy Hains of Che Bella Interiors in Minneapolis.

The space can be one of the greatest limitations when designing for an apartment instead of a full room or house. There are also limited options for painting and absolutely no knocking down walls.

But that doesn’t mean you’re out of options completely. Hains, along with other interior designers, have some fresh ideas for bringing design into apartment living.

Take advantage of the light you have A different window covering can let in more light, which makes a room seem more spacious, Hains says. “Take down those plastic blinds and hang curtains,” says Anne Thomas of Lucy Interior Designs in Minneapolis.

“You could even go buy fabric and make your own – a fun weekend project.”

Add pops of color Nancy Woodhouse and Marie Meko, both senior designers for Gabberts in Edina, say there are plenty of ways to integrate color into a room without relying on paint, including ceramic garden stools or ottomans, artwork on the walls, pillows and throws, vases, fresh flowers and art glass.

Change what you can Some landlords don’t have a problem with paint or other changes so be sure to ask. Thomas suggests painting the walls a neutral color. “Most

landlords don’t have a problem with that and the slightest color change can open up a space,” she says. Thomas also says galvanized aluminum can turn into a backsplash for the kitchen. “You can then use magnets to hang artwork, postcards, notes, etc,” she says.

Relive the Tradition!

Decorate the walls If painting isn’t an option, try brightening up the walls with decorations or hangings.

For a unique look, Thomas says tapestries or a favorite piece of fabric can turn a plain wall into a mural. Another unique idea, one very popular in children’s rooms according to Hains, is a set of wall decals that can be applied and removed without residue. Of course, there are traditional choices like photographs and posters. “Your favorite art pieces or framed sketches or pictures of loved ones can make a wall uniquely you,” Thomas says.

BY ANGELO GENTILE Much like fashion, home decor trends shift with time and tastes. Several local designers recently identified four popular elements of design they see emerging this fall as they work with their residential and commercial clients.

PAINTED WOODWORK Staining your home’s woodwork is giving way to a new look these days: painted woodwork. Especially in white or shades of blue.

The color blue for woodwork is a contemporary Scandinavian design influence, which is a popular style these days, says Debra Herdman, owner of Minneapolisbased Debra Herdman Design (debraherdmandesign.com).

Plus, the painted-woodwork trend is not just for one or two rooms, “This is being done throughout the whole house,” says Betsy Kahler Sangrene, owner of Shakopee-based B Kahler Designs (bkahlerdesigns.com).

How to Use Feng Shui in Your Home Several sources describe Feng Shui as a Chinese philosophy or art or science related to the workings of spatial arrangements and orientation in relation to the flow of energy.

Julie Ann Segal, owner of Minneapolis-based Metropolitan Interiors (metrointeriors.com), frequently is asked by clients to consider Feng Shui when designing spaces and interiors.

Here are five tips she offers clients:

1. Keep everything in good repair. When everything is running and working, your life is running smoothly.

2. Paint your front door a different color than anything else in your house. Make it stand out.

“It is the mouth of chi or mouth of energy, where your energy enters your home,” Segal explains.

“So we always paint the front door a different color, to be more prominent.”

3. De-clutter. Keep things you love and use, Segal says, and let go of the rest.

4.

Evaluate your art. Does the art in your space reflect who you are today? For example, some pieces might be old and bring up bad memories, such as a divorce, and so weed out those objects of art that might actually be upsetting to you.

5. Make sure that the center of your space feels healthy, happy, uplifting and harmonious, for greater health and for feeling centered.

Erin Moser of Excelsior showcases favorite finds every day on her blogs.

f you have a favorite color, you might think of it when shopping for clothes, buying a car or painting a room. But Erin Moser’s favorite color – turquoise – is on her mind all the time.

Erin spends her days scanning the Internet and networking with interior designers, constantly on the lookout for turquoise décor and accessories. For more than six years, she’s been showcasing her favorite finds daily on her blogs, House of Turquoise (houseofturquoise.com) and Everything Turquoise (everythingturquoise.com).

While decorating a new apartment, Erin needed a way to keep track of all of her online turquoise finds. It was long before Pinterest existed, so she started a blog to collect photos of rooms and links to the products, planning to use it as a personal resource in her decorating. To Erin’s surprise, the blog immediately started attracting fellow fans of the sea-blue hue.

“It really is my favorite color and has been since I was a little girl,” Moser says.

“I found out it’s the same for a lot of people. We’ve kind of created our own little club where we celebrate the club.”

Truth is, that unofficial club is not so little. Moser’s sites attract more than 20,000 daily visitors, making her one of Minnesota’s most popular bloggers.

She has a huge social media following, as well, with over 27,000 Facebook fans and more than 40,000 people following her on Pinterest.

“My absolute favorite thing is sharing the talent of the interior photographers and designers,” Moser says. “I know my audience is big and these people are getting the attention they deserve.”

During her first year of blogging

daily about all things turquoise, Moser wondered if she could make enough income blogging to survive without her administrative job at a local printing press.

She moved into her dad’s basement so she could spend some rent-free months building her audience and learning how to make money via corporate sponsorships and partnerships.

“I didn’t have anyone to ask, I didn’t read any books. I just figured it out myself,” she says.

Today, blogging is a full-time career for Moser. To ensure there’s something for everyone, she added a third blog to the mix – Décor By Color (decorbycolor. com) – featuring home products in other hues besides turquoise. Moser says she spends eight to ten hours a day researching and writing, feeling blessed to work out of the Excelsior home she and her husband designed and decorated a little over a year ago.

Though her blogs don’t feature many personal photos and stories, Moser says readers are aware of the “biggest things” in her family’s life; she’s included posts about her engagement, wedding and – most recently - the birth of her baby boy in late August. Baby Wesley’s nursery is, naturally, painted turquoise.

“My audience is so supportive,” Moser says. “I really feel like I have friends now all over the world.”

Each month readers ask Livon about their questions around intuition and all things supernatural. In this month’s edition, readers ask about discerning intuition from ego, intuitive boundaries and dealing with negative people.

How can I know the difference between my intuition and my ego?

Great question. Our intuition speaks to us through a still quiet voice from within.

It ’s that inner knowing, that internal nudge that leads us to the right place at the right time. Our intuitive voice is calm and never puts us down or seems angry.

On the other hand, our ego acts out of fear and often encourages us to assume and act out of selfishness. When we do so, our egos inflate while our intellect and spirit are diminished. As a result, our intuition naturally shuts down. If we center ourselves we can return to a blissful neutral, and reopen our heart and mind.

The flow of psychic data is now liberated and able to reach the conscious mind at a more rapid speed. To do this work justice, we must stay tuned to the higher self and give the ego, which can act as a loaded gun, time off.

Ever since my older brother died two years ago, when I first meet people, I start to get all kinds of information about them. It is not like I’m looking, I don’t want to know this stuff. Can I stop it?

You can keep the flow of information from feeling as though it is bombarding you but it takes some real work. The grief you experienced over the loss of your brother opened you up intuitively; this is not at all uncommon. There are practices that can help you heal and become better at controlling when and how information presents itself so you will no longer feel so flooded.

The most effective is through physical exercise. This will help you feel connected to the earth and gain a strong presence of being. As a result, your personal borders (a.k.a. boundaries) are strengthened.

Another practice is to simply, firmly, and politely say, no when information begins to roll in. It works. Turn your attention to a picture in your mind that brings you peace and re-ground yourself.

I work with someone who has nothing nice to say to or about anyone. He sits near me and I have a terrible time feeling productive because his complaining tires me out. Is there something I can do to block his bad mood?

Our thoughts offer a platform from which to view our world. When we are in

a dark mood, darkness finds us. It sounds like your co-worker is caught in it, and there is much you can do to block it. First, exercise compassion for him; he clearly is in pain. Next, turn up your personal level of positive energy. There is always something upbeat to think and say. Look around your space and acknowledge seven things that you are grateful for. Silently say something appreciative about them. When you do so, the mood-altering effects are astounding. Everything flows with extra ease when positive energy is infused in it. Maintaining affirmative thoughts can shift dark energy to light.
