It’s no secret that having outdoor space is a luxury in central Brighton, so if you’ve got it why not flaunt it? Now that spring has sprung it’s the ideal time to spruce up your garden, especially if you’re thinking of selling your property. As this contemporary garden in nearby Beaufort Terrace shows, low maintenance doesn’t have to mean boring. Use bold, bright colours on steps or benches to add some character and perhaps invest in an outdoor rug and cushions to create a relaxing and comfortable space. Last but by no means least, bring in some fragment flowers such as lavender, jasmine or gardenia. To view Beaufort Terrace call us now on 01273 685 111.

A regular face about town and campaigner for a wealth of local issues including our new local hospital, Simon Kirby has been MP for Kemp Town since 2010. Having lived and worked here for most of his life, what does Kemp Town mean to him?
My favourite Kemp Town building or landmark is… There are many fantastic buildings and landmarks in Kemp Town. There is the Palace Pier, lots of fabulous listed buildings as well as the Royal Sussex County Hospital which is particularly close to my heart having lobbied so long for the £484 million funding for redevelopment. What makes Kemp Town different from the rest of Brighton & Hove? Kemp Town is a diverse and exciting place full of fascinating history and interesting people. If I could change one thing to make Kemp Town even better it would be… The regeneration of the Brighton Kemp Town seafront where sadly we haven’t seen the changes that we would like. The announcement of £50k government investment to regenerate Madeira Terraces is important to Kemp Town because… This area has the potential to be a fantastic tourist offering, as well as being a great place for local residents to use and businesses to invest in. I have been contacted by many concerned residents about the Madeira Terraces and have had many meetings with businesses affected by the closure and also the Seafront Traders Association.
The £50,000 grant from the Department for Communities and Local Government is to help kick-start the revival of the Terraces and the area around Madeira Drive. The money is from the Government’s Coastal Revival Fund and is to be paid to Brighton & Hove City Council through a Section 31 grant. I look forward to the Council finally revealing their plans now that they have been given this initial funding.
The Top 3 reasons that people should move to Kemp Town are… 1. There is an excellent MP who works hard to represent all residents regardless of their political views. 2. It is a beautiful place with historic buildings and interesting people. 3. The sun always shines in Kemp Town, as I told the Prime Minister during Question Time last year when a UKIP councillor said that the recent floods in England were caused by Mr. Cameron’s support for gay marriage. 05|

this month ...we’re enjoying A little something we like to call The Dominator! Created by our very own Dominique this is guaranteed to put a spring in your step‌. Simply place a handful of kale, handful of spinach, an avocado, a banana, a dessert spoon of flax seeds and a handful of nuts (almonds cashews and brazils) into a Nutribullet. Add approximately 200ml of water 200ml and blitz! Serves two.

T
he 28th February saw a lot of tired feet but an equal amount of happy faces at the Brighton Half Marathon. The Sussex Beacon Corporate Relay added a new dimension to the event this year and, as well as being the main sponsor, Sawyer & Co rose to the challenge by entering the race. Raising much needed funds for the HIV charity, teams from a variety of local businesses donned their trainers and completed the course of just over 13 miles. 07|

Preparing to sell your home? Don’t panic! Here’s a quick guide on how to declutter… House-hunters love to see tidy rooms. It lets them see just how much room your home has, emphasises any special features and most importantly makes it easy for them to visualise living there. Decluttering doesn’t mean hiding all trace of your daily life and it doesn’t have to take all day. Here’s how to make a great impression on potential buyers in under 60 minutes. First Impressions Count – Instead of letting viewers trip over a mountain of shoes or have to squeeze past full coat racks, take 5 minutes to tidy them away even if it’s only for the viewing. Your wardrobe is your friend – the last thing any viewer wants to see is your clothing lying around or hanging off the back of doors. So instead of letting them think that your property doesn’t have enough storage space try hanging up belts, ties and bags on coat hangers in your wardrobe. Show your kitchen and bathrooms some love – these rooms are important to most buyers so it stands to reason that they should be for you too. Once you’ve collected any loose bits of make-up or kitchen jars that are lying around place them out of sight in your cabinets. Empty the bins and give all the worktops and mirrors a clean. Keep or throw - now is the time to be brave! Take a look around and make a mental note of everything that is taking up floor space. Be honest with yourself and decide whether they really are things you want to keep or if they should be thrown out. Items that you’re keeping but aren’t used every day can be stored until you move and those that you really don’t need or want anymore can be recycled, given to a charity or even just thrown away! 08|

Property Market Update The good news is that the property market in Brighton and Hove continues to be buoyant with people’s desire to live in the area showing no signs of slowing down. Due to a shortage of properties on the market at the moment that means of course that prices are steadily continuing to rise. If you’re thinking of moving now is a great time to do it as demand for properties in Kemp Town is far outstripping supply. Call us now for a valuation on 01273 685111 or pop into our branch at 113 St. Georges Road and allow us to get things moving for you.

Upper Rock Gardens a quick trip through history Today Upper Rock Gardens is a peaceful tree-lined street full of elegant bay fronted properties, so we thought we'd find out if that had always been the case. Today many of the buildings are listed due to their importance to the history of Brighton, with No3, designed by Wilds and Busby and built c1825, being Grade II listed along with Nos 15,17-18, 20 and 22, 23-26. The west side was built from 1820 and by 1822 twenty seven houses had been completed. East Lodge, the home of the Earl of Egremont, was on the east side and came complete with extensive gardens. In 1855 the Duke and Duchess of Richmond moved in but in 1880 the grand building had been replaced by houses. Upper Rock Gardens was originally the paddock used by the Earl of Egremont for his racing stud, and it extended from the current position of Edward Street down to St James's Street. In 1879 the Corporation, a new drive from the Marine Parade to the Downs, was constructed and when the East Lodge was removed a new road was laid out that is now Upper Rock Gardens. It was around the same time that St Mary's Church was built. One of the most famous historical connections that Upper Rock Gardens has is with Charles Dickens. Well known for his love of Brighton, with parts of his novels 'Bleak House' and 'Barnaby Rudge' being said to have been written here, but the book that has the closest connection is actually 'Dombey and Son'. In the novel Paul Dombey is sent as a child to lodge with Mrs Pipchin, whose home in a steep bye-street at Brighton is thought to be based on a house in Upper Rock Gardens. 10|
