Hello SBLBSHP members, All aspects of our lives are evolving so that we can participate and enjoy the activities we enjoy. Sports without live fans, but fans enjoy the games while socially distanced at restaurants or at home and outdoor nail and hair salons! Everyone has adapted to our new norm of social distancing, working from home or being experts donning PPE. Pharmacists and technicians are front line heroes and we must take care of ourselves before we can effectively serve our patients. Summer is passing by fast, please take some time to recharge. My work encourages us to take time off even if we cannot travel like we usually would in past summers. We drove and helped move our daughter to Glendale, Arizona for graduate school. We took a day “off” and went to Sedona for the day. It was relaxing to be away. We went on a hike, shopped and had ice cream. It was nothing fancy, but it provided an opportunity for relaxed family bonding. I hope you also get a chance to do something special with your friends and family. Unfortunately our chapter has not had many events recently, but we are working on potential virtual continuing education programs. Please stay tuned! Check out the CSHP website for virtual programs where you can learn at the comfort of your own home. Enjoy your summer! Sincerely, Angela Jeong, PharmD, APh

CSHP Pacific Coast Preceptor Conference By Cynthia Bennett, CPhT, CSPT, Technician Liaison CSHP hosted their annual Pacific Coast Preceptor Conference July 9-11, 2020. This was CSHP’s first virtual conference. It was well attended by many, and there were a variety of sessions. It was exciting to be able to attend sessions remotely and in a safe environment. There were several relevant topics regarding student rotations and the current pandemic. It was informative to hear how other programs are handling the current COVID crises and how preceptors are able to give students an experiential experience without compromising the safety of the staff, preceptors, students and patients. It was great to be able to interact with the speakers and ask questions in real-time during the live sessions. CSHP offered several CEs and because the sessions were recorded, we were able to watch all the recorded sessions even after the conference was over. I felt CSHP did a great job providing this conference to our pharmacy profession.

Mentorship Program: New Ways to Connect During COVID-19 By Rosalin Preechakul, PharmD, APh, BCPS, Mentorship Co-Chair Physical distancing does not mean social disconnection as our mentors and mentees are continuing to connect virtually. 2020 has been a challenging year but SBLB continues to promote its pharmacist members to mentor pharmacy students and to continue their relationships while they may be separated due to COVID-19. Unfortunately we had to cancel our yearly mentorship social mixer, but we are working towards a new normal and encouraging our mentors and mentees to communicate via video conferencing and possibly to share the enjoyment of a drink and snack from the computer screen. We are also excited for our new pharmacy student graduates who are our future mentors! The mentorship program is a great way to contribute to the pharmacy profession by helping to foster active and motivated pharmacists for the future. Please contact our mentorship committee if you are interested in being a mentor. We would also like to take this opportunity to invite our mentees to join our monthly virtual board meetings. Please contact our board members if you would like to join us for the next board meeting.

Legislation Update By John McGady, MS, PharmD, BCPS, Legal Affairs Chair

The California State Legislature, as part of their regular schedule, went into recess on September 13 of 2019 and reconvened on January 6th, 2020 and adjourns on August 31, 2020. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the Legislature suspended its session effective March 16, through May 4, 2020 and has been operating with limited sessions. During the first half of the 2019-2020 session, CSHP supported bills fared well. Since the initiation of limited sessions, the legislature has primarily focused on pandemic related items, specifically public health and budget issues. Currently, CSHP supports 13 active bills and is tracking and additional 28 health related items. Three notable bills supported by CSHP are outline below.

SB 1710

Pharmacy practice: vaccines:

This bill would also authorize a pharmacist to independently initiate and administer vaccines approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

USC School of Pharmacy Chapter Updates By Ruby Yang, USC School of Pharmacy Student Liaison

PPE Distribution Day This summer the USC CSHP student chapter partnered with the state of California to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to our local pharmacies. In this initiative we assisted as the regional distribution site for the Los Angeles and Orange County areas. We recruited many pharmacy student volunteers who came out on two separate weekends to help distribute masks and hand sanitizers. In total, 240,000 surgical masks and 212 gallons of hand sanitizers were distributed to more than 100 area pharmacies.

USC School of Pharmacy Chapter Updates Continued

White Coats for Black Lives At USC School of Pharmacy, our mission is to advance health through excellence in pharmacy education, research and practice, and we must focus especially on the health disparities that exist in our society and the role we, as health professionals, play in addressing them. We are located in the heart of Los Angeles, one of the most diverse cities in the world, and we strive to support underrepresented populations and create a strong culture of inclusion. Therefore, in June, our CSHP chapter student pharmacists participated with the White Coats 4 Black Lives Movement held in Veteran’s Park, Culver city, in partnership with Children for Black Lives Matter. Along with other student pharmacists and faculty from the USC School of Pharmacy, the event also combined forces with USC Medical, UCLA Medical, and UCI Nursing School.

UCSF Chapter Updates By Carol Chou and Thien Nguyen, UCSF Student Liaisons

In May, we hosted a Residency Match Panel via Zoom, where four matched students from the Class of 2020 shared their perspectives and pearls of applying and interviewing for residencies. There was a great turn out with ~115 students who attended virtually. The panelists provided us with many tips and insights and one of the biggest takeaways was to start early. The event was recorded and is available on the CHSP at UCSF Facebook page.

UCSF Chapter Updates Continued

To show our support for the Black Lives Matter movement and our LGBTQ+ community, CSHP at UCSF held a fundraiser from June 17th to June 24th, where the board matched the donations they received up to a certain amount. We generated $252 in new donations and the board matched $200, bringing the total to $452. We donated half to Black Lives Matter and half to The Okra Project, which supports the Black LGBTQ+ community.

s

CSHP at UCSF is collaborating with Golden Gate CSHP (GGCSHP) and the Salvation Army for an “Adopt the Family” drive, where we collect donations from different sites and provide them to a family in need. CSHP at UCSF is primarily focusing on the student population and pharmacists working at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs. GGSHP spearheaded the first drive and donated to a family from Zimbabwe. CSHP at UCSF will be leading the second drive at the end of July to provide donations for a different family. We’ve also reached out to other student chapters to join us, and currently, we have Chapman University, University of the Pacific, and Marshall B. Ketchum University participating.
