Industry Dinners Recap

11

Dear SBLBSHP members, I hope everyone has been doing well and staying safe. I can’t believe it is already June and halfway through 2022! For the past quarter, our chapter’s board has been hard at work planning for this year’s events. Our Industrial Relations Committee has already hosted a few industry sponsored dinners over the past few months and these have always been our popular events. (continued on next page)

Spring 2022

We are looking forward to more dinners to come! In May, our chapter hosted our annual in-person Resident Project Presentations CE dinner combined with Night with Industry at the Carson Events Center. This was our first major in-person event for this year, and it was a huge success! We had 8 pharmacy residents present the results of their research projects, and over 50 members and students attended the event. I want to sincerely thank all of our members who came out to support the event and the sponsors who made it all possible. I truly appreciate all of the hard work the Educational Affairs and Industrial Relations committees put in to make the event a success. I hope everyone was able to take this opportunity to network, socialize, and learn something new. Looking ahead, our chapter will be hosting our annual summer social at the So-Fi Stadium with a tailgate lunch in June and a joint 3-hour CE brunch event with the SCSHP chapter at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills in the month of September. Please stayed tuned for these exciting events to come! Again, we welcome our members to join our monthly board meetings if you are interested in getting involved with our chapter. Our board meetings are held every 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7 PM. Please look out for email invites if interested. We wish everyone a great summer and look forward to seeing everyone at our events! Sincerely, Michelle Ding, PharmD, BCPP, APh

At the center of the event, informative displays from our pharmaceutical vendors allowed members to engage in conversations with the various pharmaceutical representatives and learn about some of the new and innovative therapeutic options on the market today. Many guests completed the vendor crossword puzzle which entered them into a raffle drawing for prizes that were awarded at the end of the night. The SBLBSHP Chapter would like to thank Amgen, Boehringer Ingelheim, Eisai, Genentech, GSK, Karyopharm, Novonordisk, P zer, and Shionogi for their participation in this event. We look forward to seeing everyone at our summer events!

Legislation Updates By Rosalin Preechakul, PharmD, BCPS, APh, Legal A airs Co-Chair

CSHP focuses on a number of legislative bills that can affect the pharmacy practice. Below are some bills that CSHP supports and have created a letter template that members can use to send support to their local representatives. SB 958 (Limón)- Medication and Patient Safety Act of 2022 CSHP is asking for support of SB 958 – oppose the practice of White Bagging This bill aims to stop the practice of white bagging, by preventing health plans from refusing to cover infused or injected medications the health provider has in stock, if use is required for patient safety, integrity, or timely care. Health plans have started to implement policies that restrict patient access by requiring the use of plan speci ed vendors for crucial infusion and injectable medications in healthcare settings. This practice is known as white-bagging and can result in nonoptimal drug use, unnecessary hospital admissions, and delays in treatment. Timeline Lead Authors: Limón (S), Portantino (S) Introduced in 2/9/22 Last Action on 05/27/2022: [House] Referred to Com. On HEALTH. S. 1362/H.R. 2759 - Pharmacy and Medically Underserved Area Enhancement Act CSHP is asking for support of S.1362/ HR2759 - Pharmacists Achieving Provider StatusProposed Bill in Congress This is a bipartisan bill that would enable Medicare bene ciaries to access essential patient care services provided by pharmacists in medically underserved areas. Currently, federal barriers prevent Medicare bene ciaries from accessing healthcare services from their pharmacist. The bill aligns Medicare state laws, which allow pharmacists to provide a variety of care services, including medication management, monitoring chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, smoking cessation services, and coordinating transitions of care. This bill is a major step toward ensuring that all pharmacists can be part of increasing access to healthcare. The legislation does not expand the types of services pharmacists can provide but it simply allows pharmacists to be paid when they provide healthcare services to a Medicare bene ciary. Timeline Cosponsors: 70 cosponsors (39D/31R) Introduced in 4/22/21 Latest action on Senate - 04/26/2021 Read twice and referred to the Committee on Finance Letter of Support To submit your letter of support please click the link below https://ujoin.co/campaigns/1357/actions/public/1620086723?action_id=1422

Spring 2022

Recap: Industry-sponsored Educational Dinners By Matt Kamada, PharmD, BCPS, Industrial Relations Co-chair

In March 2022, our chapter restarted our monthly educational dinners with our industry partners. We had been on break since October of 2021. We were very excited to be able to see each other face to face again, learn from colleagues, as well as enjoy a nice meal! Our March Educational Dinner was hosted by Heron Therapeutics (a special thanks to Erica Keane, Territory Business Manager). Our discussion was led by Dr. Timothy Beard regarding “Entering a World of Postoperative Pain Management” and the event was held at the beautiful Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach. It was a great turnout with a very interesting topic. In April, we partnered with Shionogi Inc (a special thanks to Eric Hulsy, Key Account Manager) and had our educational dinner at 555 East Steakhouse in Downtown Long Beach. Our topic for the night was “Fetroja (cefiderocol): A Unique Siderophore Cephalosporin for the Treatment of Difficult-to-treat Infections Due to Susceptible Gram-negative Pathogens” which was presented by Dr. Kimberly Leuthner, PharmD. We had a great discussion especially since many of those in attendance had a special passion for infectious disease. We will continue to offer opportunities to our SBLBSHP members to join us for future talks. We are always looking to fill seats so please come out if you are available!
