been in practice for almost four decades and have seen more transformation of pharmacist and technician roles in the past 10 years than in the previous 30. Pharmacist are a primary source of vaccine delivery and now technicians are beginning to vaccinate. It is routine in hospitals and home infusion for TPN, many antibiotics and associated lab orders to be “per pharmacy”. Ambulatory care pharmacist are seeing patients and managing their care in institutional and out-patient settings. (continued on next page)

Pharmacists are being hired by medical groups to provide MTM to manage chronic disease, control costs of medications, and reduce hospitalizations. Provider status continues to be awarded in many states and is being seriously considered at the national level. This will be a game changer. I am excited to see what the next 10 years will bring! Our membership is beginning to increase once again after an early and mid-covid decline. I encourage you all to talk about what our chapter is doing, how we are involved in advancing our profession and the networking possibilities that exist for a CSHP and local chapter member. We have now had a couple of in-person educational meetings for the first time in more than a year. It is great to see people at these dinners and talk face to face again. Finally, I would like to share other exciting news specific to our chapter. Steve Thompson, PharmD, has been nominated for CSHP “Pharmacist of the Year”. He is among a distinguished group of nominees for this top, 2021 award. Additionally, Rosalin Preechakul PharmD, APh, BCPS, and Kevin Luu, PharmD, have won the 2021 “Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award” for their submission titled “Psoriasis Clinical Pharmacy Service”. Go Steve, Rosalin, and Kevin! I look forward to completing the year with more in-person meetings, improving membership and strong member support. Thank you SBLBSHP members! Sincerely, John McGady, MS, PharmD, BCPS

Legislation Updates Pharmacy Policy & Legislative Day By Rosalin Preechakul, PharmD, APh, BCPS, Legal Affairs Chair
On August 4th, CSHP hosted a virtual Pharmacy Policy & Legislative Day where attendees were able to connect directly with policy makers to understand the policies and programs enhancing the scope of pharmacy practice. Below is a brief summary of some of the topics discussed.
Federal Provider Status Update Dr. Kyle Robb, State Policy and Advocacy Associate, ASHP What does “Provider Status” mean? “Provider Status” means designating pharmacists as “providers” in the Social Security Act. This would pave the way for pharmacists to be added to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule thereby enabling direct compensation to pharmacists for patient care services to Medicare beneficiaries via Part B Benefit. Pharmacy and Medically Underserved Areas Enhancement Act (HR 2759/ S1362) would amend the Social Security Act to add pharmacists as eligible Part B providers in Medically Underserved Areas (MUAs) as defined by the Heath Resources & Services Administration. The bill aligns Medicare state laws, which allow pharmacists to provide a variety of care services, including medication management, monitoring chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, smoking cessation services, and coordinating transitions of care. Why hasn’t Federal Provider Status Passed? Factors impacting passage: (1) Cost: Congress is hesitant to pass this legislation due to costs and have asked for legislation with a smaller price tag (2) Legislation is limited: This bill only addresses reimbursement for pharmacists in medically underserved areas and populations. (3) Other Providers: Hesitancy from other providers to expand pharmacist provider status What can you do to help? Please continue to submit your support letters by following the link on CSHP to support this bill. 3

(Legislation Updates continued)
Continue to give support to AB 1328 (Irwin) AB 1328 by Assembly member Jackie Irwin, is currently making its way through the Senate. The bill minimizes barriers and restrictions in existing law by permitting pharmacists to administer CLIA-waived tests, perform health screenings and manage those conditions in concert with, and as a part of, a multi-disciplinary health care team. Below are suggested talking points you can share
1) Pharmacists play a vital role in California’s health care delivery system, utilizing their expertise and accessibility to deliver high quality patient care. The vast majority of people live within 5 miles of a community-based pharmacy. 2) California has a health care system that has been overtaxed by the pandemic, a rapidly aging population, and communities with poor access to physicians and other practitioners. 3) This pandemic highlighted limitations imposed on pharmacists hindering the ability to respond to public-health emergencies, provide basic public-health care services and patientspecific care for which pharmacists are trained and educated. 4) Last year, pharmacists were not able to take part in responding to the pandemic and relieve stress from the impacted health care system until a mix of Executive Orders, waivers, and the passage of legislation allowing for pharmacists to provide testing and vaccination during COVID-19 pandemic were implemented. 5) Pharmacists are currently not able to provide patients more than a few CLIA waived tests even though these tests are defined by the FDA as simple tests with a low risk for incorrect results. 6) AB 1328 would authorize pharmacists to more fully engage in public health activities and allow them to administer many CLIA-waived tests to help detect disease early 7) AB 1328 minimizes barriers and restrictions in current law by permitting pharmacists to order, administer, and interpret results for CLIA waived tests and notify the patients’ physician of the results. 8) The aim is to promote patient health and support the health care system by providing access to screening and getting patients in touch with the appropriate provider. 9) If a patient does not have a physician, the pharmacist will provide the patient a list of physicians and surgeons, clinics, or other health care service providers to contact regarding care for abnormal results. 10) AB 1328 expands access to care – prevention and early identification of acute and chronic disease, improves quality of care and length of life while reducing economic burden.

Night Out at Hollywood Bowl By Michelle Ding, PharmD, BCPP, APh, Social Affairs Co-Chair
The SBLBSHP Chapter recently hosted our annual summer social event at the Hollywood Bowl on July 17, 2021. This is also our chapter's very first major in-person event that we hosted since the pandemic started. Over 30 members including families and friends joined us at Hollywood Bowl for a fun evening under the stars socializing while enjoying a wonderful concert listening to Christina Aguilera and the LA Philharmonic. It was great to catch-up with members we haven't seen for awhile and meeting new friends. Everyone greatly enjoyed the event and appreciated the in-person interactions. We hope to provide our members more opportunities to socialize whether virtually or in-person and we look forward to having everyone join us!

Recap: Returning Back to Normalcy with an Educational Talk By Kevin Luu, PharmD, Educational Affairs Co-Chair
This past year has proven to be quite a challenge with the throes of COVID-19. Despite the solitude and separation anxiety some of us may have faced, our appreciation for inperson activities and the “human connection”, perhaps previously taken for granted, was made more evident. The night of July 20, 2021 highlights our chapter’s first step back into what we consider “normal” as we hosted our first educational dinner (and in-person event) in over a year. We were fortunate and privileged to have Paul Reinbach, a Pharmaceutical Representative from Amgen and longtime supporter of our chapter, and Richard Wright, MD, FACC, a renowned cardiologist and guest speaker, join us to sponsor our chapter and talk about evolocumab (Repatha®). L’Opera Ristorante served to be an excellent place for us to congregate, keeping our attendees happy and well-fed with their decadent Italian fare. This educational dinner is not only a new beginning to an exciting year to come, but also a reminder of the good times we have had in the past and the memories we will foster moving forward through our future events and meetings. Cheers to being “present” and for those unable to make it this time around, keep your eyes peeled for upcoming opportunities to join us!

Continuing Education Recap: Implementation of an AUC-Based Vancomycin Dosing Protocol By Rey Wang, PharmD, Educational Affairs Co-Chair
After more than an entire year of virtual meetings and CE events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SBLBSHP successfully hosted our very first in-person event of 2021 at the Bluewater Grill in Redondo Beach! On 8/25/21, we were honored to invite Dr. Daisy Lee, an ambulatory care oncology pharmacist at Kaiser Permanente South Bay, as well as Western University 4th-year pharmacy student, Stephanie Lee. In a tagteam effort, the dynamic duo presented on a relevant and potentially practice-changing topic for our profession - the implementation of an AUC-based dosing protocol for vancomycin to replace the traditional trough-based monitoring. A wonderful presentation combined with a beautiful venue with COVID safety precautions made for a memorable evening for our ~40 attendees. (continued on next page)

In addition, our Industrial Relations Committee welcomed 4 of our pharmaceutical industry partners to showcase at their individual booths prior to the start of the event: Biogen, Alexion, Incyte, and GSK, who provided valuable up-to-date developments in their respective fields to our members. To cap off the night, we hosted a fun raffle as a way of showing our appreciation for our attendees. Finally, a shoutout to the hard work of the Educational Affairs and Industrial Relations committee for making our first in-person CE event of the year a huge success! As the COVID pandemic continues to wax and wane, please continue to be on the lookout for potential future in-person events!

UC San Francisco Chapter Updates By Mai Ono and Andrew Hean, UCSF Student Liaisons
Summer is here so that means one thing for the UCSF School of Pharmacy: A new class of future pharmacists starts their PharmD education! Part of their welcome to our school includes introducing them to our many student organizations, including our CSHP at UCSF chapter. Accordingly, our chapter spent this past summer focused on recruitment efforts. In July, we participated in our school’s RCO Welcome Fair and joined other student chapters in introducing over 100 first-year students to CSHP, and our chapter’s board spoke to over 40 P1s in an intimate CSHP at UCSF meet-and-greet Zoom room. At the beginning of August, we held our CSHP at UCSF Information Session featuring our faculty advisor, Dr. Michael Trillanes, PharmD, where P1s and interested returning students learned about our yearly events and benefits of membership. Despite other events happening at the same time, we had a turnout of over 70 students! Most recently, in preparation for one of our popular yearly events, we held our Clinical Skills Competition Information Session, where the logistics, competition format, and tips and tricks to compete in our school’s upcoming local rounds were covered — as well as what to prepare for at the state and national levels. Our chapter was delighted to see this info session once again had a healthy turnout of over 70 students! As we continue to the end of summer and into fall, our chapter hopes to continue carrying on our regular and new events in a safe yet effective, engaging format as safety precautions continue to be dynamic. We are excited to see what innovation our student chapter’s board comes up with next! 9
